Interesting that good Husqvarna information comes from the more or less opposite place of the globe. 🙂 Just fixed my old 2000 with almost the identical drive mechanism. The short belt was in bad condition - extremely expensive, but now the machine is OK. Very common machines here in Sweden (probably not surprising).
Your comment: " In my opinion, one of the most reliable and well designed domestic sewing machines of all time. " says it all. Mine is with the carrier and should turn up by the end of the week... So excited.!!
I love your videos. You have a genuine love and appreciation for these mechanical marvels. I feel in good company. You sound South African or Australian. I'm in California, US. Funny how international this group of Viking owners is. The machine you are working on, the model 21 is such a classic. The problem is though, the parts are no longer made. What is encouraging though is that China and Taiwan have started making parts for vintage Viking Husqvarna machines. I saw a camstack copy and bought it. Also a walking foot. Waiting for them to come to test out. Every Viking machine has a broken camstack, most likely from the hot lightbulb. I changed my bulb to an LED version and what a difference! So cool too. I cleaned out my model 6030 very thoroughly and lubed it up with Triflow. Got everything to work - needle timing, pressure foot tension, all gears moving, bobbin case, handwheel, all good. Then after assembly, the V-belt is not moving. Bummer. Slight sparking near the bottom carbon brush of the motor. I wonder if I was too generous with the oil and belt is slipping and motor was affected too? I will let it dry for a day and try it again. I took the motor assembly out to clean behind it, and also unscrewed the base for a good washing. If you know why the V-belt won't work, please share some tips. I put so much work into this machine for 4 days. I know it so well now like an old friend! Will a new V-belt give it more torque? Did I get oil on the belt? All the gears and bobbin are working fine. The belt won't engage, and so the needle side is not working. Sad.
Thank you so much. Great video close ups and commentary. I have two of these I am working on and neither was assembled correctly and stuck. Great video.
Hi - I just discovered the spiral on one of my mashines was not attached to the hook ! I enjoyed your detailed explanaition. Very interesting and well expalined !
We just found out about this feature on our machine but it broke down the same day. Now we think we might be able to fix it! Thank you so much! Greetings from Sweden :)
Hi In Stitches Another super-informative and insightful recording; MANY Thanks! I had recently picked-up one of these machines (class 19) which was described as 'Not Working'....actually found, on delivery, that it was partially dismantled!...the 'Gear Assembly' etc that your video covers was in a plastic bag...with a couple of odd bits rattling around inside the machine! I was able to re-build it thanks to your video BUT: the one SINGLE part that appears to be missing is the Handwheel! I was hoping that that you either had one such available for purchase from amongst your 'Making one Good One from others' projects...OR if you could direct me to some other source?...are you able to confirm what appears to be the case, that the cl19 and cl21 handweels are interchangeable...I'm pretty sure one of the Gear Assemblies you featture is from a cl19? It would be wonderful to get this Beauty sewing again.
Hello, can you please help me? I need the engine belt I have the same sewing machine (Husqvarna 21E), and the drive belt cut. I live in Antofagasta Chile. Greetings and thanks Muchas gracias por tus magníficos vídeos.
Great video :) Do you see much wear in the plastic gigs of the gearbox I wonder if the get excessive wear when using in low gear because of the extra torque I’ve jus got a 19e Look really clean Reverse button stuck but I’ve not had time to free it up yet but very excited about slow seeing 😊
I have a question you may be able to answer. Does the gear reduction mechanism from the type 19 I believe (the one that you have to take the cap off and place it on bobbin winding area) work with this type? ( the one you just pull the bobbin winding out) wondering if the gears and such are the same on the inside. if all that makes sense
My Cl 21 has a different side panel with a small knob that pushes in on the plate that allows for the slower gear, when removed. I wonder if someone replaced that side panel without changing out the reduction gear section for a newer model. It seems the side panel that's on there is more like the 21a panel which uses the gear reduction with the pull out spindle. That's what you've replaced it with, as well. Just a thought.

I have the class 21E… and I’m having a big problem changing the belt 😢
Wow! Very helpful video. Thank you for sharing this!
