Whenever the Scotland guy talks, my brain can't decide if I understand him or not.
I swear it sounds so close to English
@@cgonthebeat3741 Probably because it's Old Scottish
@@Dingus_Khaan That's neat thanks for the Info
@@Dingus_Khaan you mean... Gaelic*
which is still spoken in Scotland
Scotland: "Kennst du it hearen?"
Me as a german who learned english: 😶 "Wait what?"
Old English was a lot more german than it is now.
It’s actually Scots, so part Anglo-Saxon (old English), part Norse (old Norwegian), and some Gaelic. It’s somewhat akin to a Creole language, a bastard language of English and Norwegian with some Gaelic influences.
@@cgallegos2106 not much Gaelic really, Scots is Germanic and has many similarities with Germanic languages so yes Old English would have many things in common with it especially in the North
I think the same thing hearing German. It's so strange to suddenly understand what's being said.

Eh, I always hated that Scottish "Friend" of ours, at least Gravity 2 is coming! *Remebering that time when the Normans conquered England (Anglo Saxon).* Anyways, moving on!
It is worth mentioning that Poundmaker's defeat cutscene uses his own words from his trial by colonial government after he gave himself up. Nice attention.
Also a very cool-looking and sounding character.
interesting, what does Poundmaker mean? In my mind I keep calling him Pondmaker :)
@@xLetalis it's a reference to his bison calling abilities!
@@ISUCKATANYOFTHIS what is "bison calling"?
@@xLetalis per Wikipedia, The buffalo pound was a hunting device constructed by native peoples of the North American plains for the purpose of entrapping and slaughtering American bison, also known as buffalo.

Gotta love the Netherlands, every word is required to have an extremely exaggerated HHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Dutch guy here lol
That is Old Royal Dutch from the early to mid 20th century. We relaxed a bit with our pronounciation but we still use the "g"(scrape your throat), "r"(vibrate your tongue) and exaggerated "h" very much.
To be fair, they did give her an extremely posh accent. It honestly sounds closer to our last queen (Beatrix) than it does to the actual Wilhelmina.

Dracos002 Wilhelmina voice: Princess Beatrix of Nassau
Robert the Bruce's old Scottish really has some noticable traces of old High German. Especially the way he pronounces some words and builds his sentences.
Also the reason you can understand some of it is because it comes from the same family tree. (Specifically the Germanic part if i remember correctly)
Der Kugelfisch It’s middle Scots.
@Mortus Evil thanks for specifying. I only knew the bare minimum of how english came to be
I just learned that old english merged with french to become middle then modern english. Does that mean that english is both a romance and Germanic language?
@Celtic Phoenix Sollst actually exists in German. It means: you should / you shall, if you were to add the you (du) in 2. Person singular informal.

Queen Wilhelmina's defensive cut-scene would look silly if not for the fact that she was queen when the Nazis invaded, which just makes it badass.
She was the only man in the Dutch government.

Just realized that Lautaro's rapier is the exact same model from Philip II's, cool detail
wait shit you are right, nice detail
Well, he was a servant of Pedro de Valdivia (the guy who founded Santiago de Chile) and when he scaped he took everything he knew from the spanish to use it against them, he teached the Mapuche how to ride a horse, how to use the environment to their favor, how to use fire arms (the line when he said that Mapuche will use your own arms against you is because of that) and thanks to that the War of Arauco lasted so long, hell Mapuche people didn't only stand their ground against one empire but two, Incas also tried to expand in Chile but they were stoped by Mapuche. Lautaro was a real hero, but we don't acknowledge him at all until recent years

One thing that I've always loved about Civ is that it makes you feel like a total jerk for eliminating another civilization from the game. You get the sense that everything that defined a people is being erased. And while other games would give you a sense of accomplishment, you instead get a feeling of regret.
Haha what?😂
They get what they deserved for being weak. I love these scenes of defeat with leaders realising their nation is erased
I always like how it kind of looks like Lautaro is using Philips sword, taking the ‘using your own weapons against you’ literally.

Ok just to make this clear about Robert de Bruce: He probably speaks scotts, a creole language decendent from old english. It's a germanic language it has NOTHING to do with scottish gaelic, which is a celtic language.

PoundMaker is my favorite character in this game
I can just barely understand Poundmaker, really beautiful game.
Hi there- same! I'm Plains Cree and understand 30-40% of that he's saying.. The second part where he says "Namoya" is "Don't". Essentially he says 'Don't do this if you know whats good for you' roughly. The English translation is kinda off and way more detailed than what he actually said.
