I love Richard Blade. I was a teen in the 80s and remember he had such a vast knowledge about music right up there with Dick Clark. I used to run home from school to watch MV3 with him and Karen Scott. I miss those days.

I didn't have MTV so MV3 was my go-to for music videos. Later there was Video One. I also remember watching the world premier of "Thriller" on Friday Night Videos.

Everyone loves Richard Blade because when you meet him you instantly feel his incredible enthusiasm that only a fan can understand. He was there and is still there mind body and spirit. There have been a few other legendary DJs like Wolfman Jack or Rodney biggenheimer, but not many. Richard Blade is that rare gent; a pleasure and a legend!

I moved to LA in the summer of 1980 as a eighteen years old from back east and to me listening to KROQ or checking out the scene on Melrose B4 it went "high end" and was actually kind of ratty looking was something I could never have experienced on the east coast. Thank you Kurt (and Richard) for the memories.

That was fantastic. I really enjoyed your interview with Richard.
Don't know what he was thinking saying there was no video games in the 80s though, lol. It was the golden age for arcades, and we had the console wars of Atari, Nintendo and sega. He mentioned pong but I'm pretty sure that was more of a 70s game even though it came out in the 50s/60s I think.
He's right about Duran duran being huge again. I remember though seeing them at Nottingham arena in the early 2000s and the place was nearly empty. They was giving tickets away. But I get it, the 80s was considered a bit naff still in the early 2000s. Now it's done a full 180 and everyone loves it again. Although I never stopped loving the 80s. It's always been great to me.

  • @rsanders27

I know a lot of "kids" (to me anyone under 30 is a "kid"...no denigration intended) who know more about my (Gen Xers) music, movies, fashion, and pop culture than I did about my parent's stuff when I was the "kids'" ages. It puts a huge smile on my face when somebody starts quoting lines from 80s/90s movies that came out before that person was born because I wasn't into movies of the 60s or early 70s. Also, I give a thumbs up to the same person who rocks a 80s/90s music artist/band t-shirt and that person wasn't even alive yet when that artist/band was in their popular prime years, even if that person cannot name even one song.....because it keeps that artist/band ALIVE!

  • @polbecca

I remember the enthusiasm of Richard Blade when he hosted the UK show, "The American Top Ten", which was our 1990s window into bands and artists many of us knew almost nothing about, rock, dance and rap and hip hop. I'd never heard of Donald Fagen, Gary Hoey, Anthrax, De La Soul, and lots of others. We also got videos from UK and European artists like the Captain Hollywood Project and the Pet Shop Boys when they were in the US charts. In the days before the internet and pretty much before satellite and cable, this was essential music viewing!

he dj'd for KROQ back in the 90s. he played from 12-1 pm and it was called the "Flashback Lunch" and he would catch everyone up on the new wave hits. Was so sad when the show ended. :( but he's been doing other things, keeping himself busy.

Met Richard once at KROQ back in the early 90's. A friend of mine was trying to hire him to write for a music magazine. We went into the studio during a break while he was doing his show. He was very accommodating and friendly even though my friend was kind of an a-hole.

Growing up in the 80's and listening to KROQ, the "holy trinity" of bands were The Smiths, Depeche Mode, and The Cure. On top of that, there were dozens and dozens bands that also had a massive fan base such as XTC, Siouxsie and the Banshees, New Order, and The Style Council to name just a few.

richard blade had a lot of interesting things to say.
it would be great to interview all the kroq dj personalities of that time, to get their insight on the 80s and even 90s music… tami heidi, rodney on the rock, doug the slug, jed the fish, even the poorman, swedish egil, freddy snakeskin, scott mason, raechel donahue, van johnson, etc.
kevin & bean were at the tail end of the 80s & had much of the spotlight already, but less is known about the others.

The video, Suburbia by Pet shop boys. The beginning, I swear looks to be filmed in Southern California, possibly San Gabriel Valley or the Valley. Can you find out because I've driven through Pasadena and other cities, using the mountain range as a reference but no luck. 🙏
