Drivetrain Cardan Shaft Replacement - 2015 Porsche Macan S

  • As stated before in a few of my videos, I'm chasing a whining noise occurring at around 70mph (+/- 5mph). I started with wheel bearing replacement, but that wasn't it. My next suspect was the cardan shaft support bearing, and this is what I will attempt to address in this video. I show the steps I took to remove the cardan shaft with minimal component removal (i.e. I didn't want to remove the exhaust piping and rear valance, etc...).
    I was able to successfully replace the shaft.

    When you are installing the cardan shaft on the front side, did you have any troubles aligning the shaft? I’ve seen manuals mentioning the need to mark it before removal.
    How much hand pressure was needed to get it snapped back on? I’ve read a circlip needs replaced on the Cayenne. I’m doing a Cayenne which has spline on both sides of the rear drive shaft. Your video is the only one out there that displays a similar spline and I assume you used a 32 MM wrench to remove it.

      On your first question, correct, the manual does state that it needs to be marked before removal if you are reinstalling the same shaft. If you are installing a new shaft, it doesn’t matter. To align, just make sure that when install obviously the lines align…
      Not much hand pressure to snap it back on… you may need to wiggle it a bit while pressing it to make sure the spline aligns.
      I don’t have c-clips or circlips in my shaft… so could not say. The only thing I needed to replace was the oetiker clamp. I used the 32mm wrench to remove the rubber bushing from its slot, mainly, but the shaft is remove from the spline by pulling. I had to apply repetitive force to disengage the shaft from the spline.

      @@porscheDIY sounds like the Cayenne is slightly different than the Macan but the concept is definitely comparable. The circlip is what holds the Cayenne cardan shaft in place.

    On my 2017 Macan GTS it appears that the 6 bolts connecting the shaft to differential have all snapped leaving part of the bolt in the differential. Any thoughts?

      I would remove bolts on bearing support (right on the middle of the shaft) so that you have some play and space to remove the flange from differential. Most likely, the shaft flange will be frozen to the differential flange, so, with a hammer tap into one of the screws. If you can’t, then use another bolt to put on top of the broken bolt and tap over it until the flanges come apart. Then, remove the shaft, theoretically leaving all screws exposed. Depending on where they are broken, I would use either pliers to get them out or bolt extractor. I never had this issue, but heard that 2017 and prior, the quality of bolts was not very good. Let us know how it goes.

      The shaft is completely disconnected from the differential. All 6 bolts are sheared right off. They now need to be extracted. The flange that they are broken in is threaded onto the differential. doesn't;t look like that would come off easy?? @@porscheDIY

      @@chrisdibianco2518 I would try a screw extractor set before thinking about removing anything else…. These are aluminum bolts, so they should come out….       Hi. The part numbers are shown in the video. The Cardan Shaft is aftermarket from FCPEuro (go to 0:49 seconds of the video). The screws P/N is shown in minute 16:19 and washer P/N is shown in minute 16:24. I purchased those at Gaudin Porsche Parts, but you can buy them at any dealer.

    I didn’t hear what torque force have you used when tightening the bolts?

      21 Nm + 90 degrees

      Feels similar to prior drivetrain shaft.
