Sir. Mr. Ryan. You have a gift. Idk how to "name" this gift other than presently listening while that term in its best explanation doesn't even come close to encompassing the magic that happens on these podcasts. I just watched a man (whom I respect deeply) open up his soul to be reviewed, opinionated upon; and you created a space that allowed Nick to do it with honor as well as being there to attract him out of being timid. I love what you do sir, thank you for creating a space to LISTEN to Mr. Irving's story.
I’ve been wanting to tell you that tomorrow I leave for me ibogaine treatment in Mexico for My TBI. I learned about it through you and you gave me hope!
@@JessePhillips-you sound like an advertisement right now... just saying you can go post your affirmation of ibogaine on a video that Shawn talks about it on.... wrong place friend if you're even real and not a bot.
I served in the USMC from 1992 to 2012 and worked with Nick on two of his deployments, including the one where he had the “worst mission” of his life. There was a gap of a few years between the meetings and he matured a lot between those two deployments. For anyone nitpicking his faults or breaking his balls, this guy saved a lot of lives and put himself at extreme risk more than a few times to do it. That’s more than 99% of anyone here has done with their lives, including some of the so called “combat vets” who seem to love yammering in the comments here. In my opinion and based on personal experience, Nick straight up should have received a Silver Star for one mission in particular, but some fobbits in his command were more interested in patting themselves on the back than actually recognizing their people. Nick is a good man.
Going to combat is not a flex of something to be proud about. We need to stay out of other peoples country. Did we not learn from vietnam? 99% of population is so dumb an brainwashed thinking we need ro fight wara
Can you expand upon the mission that should have gotten a silver star? I can't stand people that try to put down our veterans. The dude but his life on the line, A LOT, yet people just want to find anyway to discredit his sacrifice. Sad.
Gotta give Shawn credit on this interview. You never find ANYONE doing interviews that allows the guest time to unpack their thoughts, feelings and emotions. This style is exactly why this is a must listen to show.
And he’s been through a lot of similar shit so he knows to literally say nothing at all other than a few words assuring the guest he’s there and just lets them recollect themselves, and let’s them know when they’re ready they can continue.
Came here to say this. He's a great interviewer, partially because he's been in similar situations and has an understanding for the feelings and emotions, and has geniune empathy for the interviewee, and partly because of his experience with the interview process itself over the time of doing the podcast.
My uncle served with Nick. He told me nothing but great things about this man. He told me he was a guardian angel in times of need. Thank you need for making it possible for my uncle to come home. God Bless you and all our troops
Never apologize for telling a story that brings you back to that feeling. A true American hero! I can’t even imagine what it feels like to have to relive this stuff and I respect you men everyday. Thank you BOTH for your services for our freedoms!
Shawn is a GREAT interviewer because he rarely injects himself into the conversation. This kind of selflessness brings out the best in others. So called, "journalists" need to take notes. THIS is TRUE journalism.
That's it. But the reason he can do that, and "journalists" can't, is because he doesn't have any pressure on him to draw out or fabricate any sort of narrative from the discussion, he's just listening and hearing everything because he wants to, not because he's trying to portray it as something for someone
I completely agree and it's incredible to me how few other hosts can or actually practice this style. Rogan is pretty good about it too. But so many other host try to make themselves a focus. This format shawn has going gives every guest a perfect chance for just stream of consciousness flow
He doesn’t wanna be told “you saved my life” cause he couldn’t save his friend. That’s so deep, only a veteran knows. I’m impressed how he opened up, much respect for Nick. Longest best podcast I’ve seen, holy shit. Thank you Shawn.
More than that the guys that died can make you feel like it's your fault if you made a decision that caused a worse situation... it's hard to hear someone say "you saved my life"... But idc. Nick thank you for keeping us safe!
For the people that focus on his .50 cal comment..get a life. Dude has multiple deployments with one of the U.S. military’s most decorated units, the 75th Ranger Regiment. He served our country at the highest level.
Internet gurus the world over we're so happy when he made that statement. It's like it's completely eliminated all of the deployments and experience he has somehow. The guy is still called The Reaper for a reason
@@SmokyOle right dude? can’t stand them… like what did you do to say he’s lying? Go away little mad keyboard warriors … nobody needs your negative whiny bs
I’ve watched the srs short version clips on RUclips. 5+ hours, man I am glad I took the time to watch from start to finish. I think Nick is a well spoken man. This is my very first full interview watch and it won’t be my last. I truly appreciate the sacrifices you and your guests made in your lives, weather your service was for political purposes or not, I appreciate that at the very least you sacrificed so much for your brothers standing beside you, if nothing else I could rest with that. Peace be upon you all until your final days. Thank you
I just did the exact same thing watched all the shorts on RUclips and then looked up the full video and watching it start to finish. I’m halfway through right now and I’m definitely gonna finish it. It’s 2 AM I started at 12
I just like this guy. He’s not some macho, tough guy. He is not afraid to talk about his weaknesses and talks about his strengths matter-of-factly. Seems like just a nice, humble guy.
Exactly why I like him too. I don't like the macho tough guy soldiers we're used to seeing, they come across as rude and narrow minded. Nick is so odd in a good way because he's this extremely skilled sniper who has served his time in war but he's not a psychopath or egotistical. He's genuinely a nice guy.
I worked with Nick for a few months at a training facility in Texas. By that time, Nick had left the Army and was instructing in carbine, pistol, and precision rifle. He was always very professional and drew from a wealth of real-world experience. During one of our training sessions, we had a former Australian SAS operator also teaching. The level of experience and the similarities in how they conveyed information to students, the drills they ran, and their ability to recognize and address each student's strengths and weaknesses were impressive. I mention this, because I have the utmost respect for the ASAS, and especially for the instructor from SAS that was present during that training session. One day, when we didn't have any students, Nick and I went to the tower (an elevated shooting platform) to test one of my rifles with new ammo. I can tell you from firsthand experience, Nick is incredibly skilled behind a rifle. Nick ran my rifle from 300 yards out to 1000 yards, consistently hitting targets as small as 1/2 MOA. The wind that day, typical of South Texas, was blowing at 15 to 20 miles per hour, causing very high mirage that made seeing targets difficult, to say the least. It didn't mater to Nick. Round after round, Nick was was hammering targets with speed and precision. On another occasion, Nick was teaching transitions between pistol and carbine. We were doing shoot and move drills, breaking contact, transitions, reloads, and other skills, all combined, which was challenging for the students. Nick grabbed an M4 and demonstrated the drill himself. His speed and accuracy were stunning as he seamlessly transitioned from the carbine to a Glock pistol holstered on his hip. From about 25 to 50 yards, he was consistently hitting tight groups with his pistol shots while on the move, demonstrating remarkable skill. There was no bravado in his demonstration. It was simply a mater of fact demo of what you can do if you practice the drills and start putting the pieces together. During the short time I worked with Nick, he shared a few of the stories he's recounting today. I'm amazed at how he can recall those periods in such detail-dates, names, places, and circumstances. Having spent nearly 20 years working overseas in various countries and war zones myself, I know firsthand how memories can blur. Names, faces, and places often blend together, and in some cases, it's a relief not to remember all the specifics. I sense Nick shares a similar sentiment; there are stories he's told me that he clearly wasn't proud of or found incredibly painful to remember. I suppose Nick is like many soldiers I've encountered over the years-just another person navigating through life, much like you and me, trying to make sense of it all. I hope Nick, like all soldiers that have served in combat will find peace in his life. Good luck Nick!
Thank you for sharing some of your experiences with him. He’s obviously not telling these stories to brag, but to share how horrific war (not can be) is. For people like me, we will never experience it. Thank God and people like him that most of us never would because of men like him. But we should all know & understand what it is, what these men & woman go through to keep us safe & from having to experience what they have. Again, thank you for providing real experience with him & how undeniably his skill level is. That he was playing down his part by saying he was just in the right place at the right time to help protect his men. He obviously has scars from taking lives & is not proud of that fact. It seems to hurt him the most to talk about his brothers that didn’t make it (understandable) but you can see & hear the pain he still holds onto for the lives he took. I think I cried more listening to him than I have in the past couple of years combined.
Nice.. thanks for sharing that with us. Seems like a cool dude with a lot of trauma! Notice he rarely even smiled in this 6 hr interview. When you see evil in the world, it’s a lot harder to laugh at little jokes. Nothing about war is funny but they use humor so they won’t go crazy. Every army around the world does this. Idc who you are, wars will get to you after a while! Watching people and animals suffer and die will get to you! I remember going to Portugal back in like 2003. I got there and saw how they treated the stray dogs and I was so depressed man. One dog was chained to a short leash where he can barely take a step. Had a big infection on his leg. He would bark all day and night while people hurled rocks at him to make it shut up smh. Just put him to sleep if you’re going to let the dog suffer!! They’ll just go around hitting cats with their cars or small dogs thinking it’s funny. I was a inch away from spazzing out when my uncle smacked some huge St. Bernard on its head saying “he doesn’t feel it”. I said of course he does, just leave the dog alone! I would wake up early in the morning. Bring them clean water and buy them fresh meat to eat or left over from my aunts house. Smh when I went back they finally built this huge outdoor dog pound. I was so happy to see that, at least they get food water and shelter! People don’t abused them anymore! I always said if I got rich, first thing I’d do is open big shelters around the world for strays and animals that couldn’t be take care of because of wars or terrorist attacks. Like the animals in Ukraine! Imagine a dog just watching the family drive away 😢😢😢. So heartbreaking just thinking about it. Now they just fend for themselves and make dog packs. A lot of the Ukraine soldiers help them though, I read somewhere that Ukraine has the most cat owners per capita in the world! Any animal lover is a friend of mine! I swear I can’t stand people who treat animals bad for no reason. “It’s just a dog bro”. For me animals are precious creatures who want nothing but some love, food, shelter and water!! They don’t ask for much and give you 10 times more back!
He says “my bad bro” after telling one of the hardest experiences anyone could go through.. it’s not your bad bro. I’m sorry him and many others have to go through that. Thank you for your service 🙏🏽
I first saw clips in my shorts feed and was compelled to find the entire video. My jaw dropped at the 5:45 runtime. And then my jaw dropped after listening to every minute. Truly amazing individual.
Shawn Ryan is the best interviewer online. Let’s people talk. Gets back to topics down the road in no rush. Has empathy. We are lucky to have you sit!!
That’s very debatable. Kind of a subjective type of claim tbh. There’s more skilled interviewers everywhere, just say he’s your favorite one. Objectively speaking he doesn’t have the skills a lot of them have. It’s a whole damn career
@@jimmybeanchugger1832 I listen to a lot of podcast and interviews from Joe, Lex, even Carson. Just a moment of appreciation for my guy Shawn! No need to argue about right or wrong with an opinion!
I’m reading through hundreds of comments and even top comments don’t even mention anything about the podcast everyone’s talking about “I’ll watch this for 6 hrs” making it about them selves but nothing about the crazy stories or heartfelt moments I feel like no one is even listening to what he’s saying RUclips is a weird place
Thank you for your service sir. Thank you as a black man raising a young man who wants to serve his country. Your his hero and I’m so grateful it’s not a rapper 🫡🫡🫡🫡
What I absolutely love about Nick’s interview is that he is not shy of his mistakes. He details every small bit he screwed up or didn’t know. In fact, everyone make mistakes but there aren’t many people who are brave enough to admit it. Even when they do, they often do not go into so much detail. This simple act makes this man extraordinary. It reminds us that to excel, naturally we will make mistakes and we should embrace them, not hide them. Well done mate
Celebrities - millions of dollars Athletes- millions of dollars Politicians - millions of dollars Social media influencers- millions Actors- millions Soldiers who are willing to hug a grenade with their battle buddy, blowing up themselves and the enemy while being ambushed-“ I had nothing when I got back. I tried to work a few different jobs but in my condition everything was difficult.” (Nick) This ish pisses me off like you wouldn’t believe
And all the brainwashed scumbags who give people like him a hard time for writing or speaking about it. As if they’re putting food on his table and paying the bills for his family.
I’ve said the same my whole life and sports is my world. Not just a hobby or past time but a career. It’s a shame and backwards. 100% agree. I’d prefer to sit down with either of these men over most of all that comprise the listed above
The fact that he had to say that he sucked or whatever for crying on this podcast is the perfect example as to why this is men’s mental health awareness month. I can’t even imagine. Fuck whoever says anything negative towards this man. A true American hero. Thank you Nick. And Shawn, keep these epic interviews coming
You guys hit the nail on the head at the end point there. Nick, may you have peace & serenity within yourself and with your family 🙏 Keep your head up & moving forward your son & wife need you.
I’ve watched every podcast I’ve ever seen with Nick but Shawn, this podcast blows every other one out of the water …you let him speak, let the stories unfold, didn’t make it about yourself and allowed one of the most impressive individuals I’ve ever listened to, speak … thank you
The fact that his in-laws cannot see past the color of his skin and don’t see the hero this man is, is sad. I would be so proud to have him in my family.
It happens more than you think. My wife's parents did the same thing to her (she's white and I'm black). They told her she was "doomed" for being with me. My wife got to retire before age 40, so we got the last laugh.
I’m 82 year old grandmother and this episode was so interesting. We all come from somewhere and it’s what you make of what you learn in your life! Congrats on coming thru it as a hero!
@@Jwine95A lot of the SEAL guys get off on kills in these same interviews. I've noticed the Army and Marine guys are a lot more humble. The more and more I watch SEAL interviews the less I respect them.
When he couldn't remember how many dudes were on the roof and said "I'll pick it up in a minute " then continued his story, it occurred to me that it's not just a story. He's living that moment again. Damn.
Man ive been waiting for this one! Im a 32 year old recovering drug addict. I didnt have a dad growing up so listening to guys like you is so valuable to me! Thanks for everything you do Shawn...
@@wrektem240 Thank you so much! Luckily my wife and I have each other while we get clean. Congrats on the near decade!! Stories like yours motivate the hell outta me. Love back from Wisconsin.
I got clean a while back too. I don't keep track of how long it's been for my own reasons but I'd guess 10 years. I just want you to know that there are people rooting for you and as a fellow recovering addict, on that level I can say I love ya kid. I believe in you. You're going to beat this. Love is the only thing that got me through. There's a whole community here that wants the best for you and I'd venture to guess has more love for you than you would ever guess. Chin up young man.
One of the best interviews! Love this one! My son is in Italy as an infantryman going to ranger school in January and when he said the line he didn’t think he was good enough because god rest his soul they were all Pat Tillman types and I wasn’t!!! Love how he shows all his vulnerabilities!! Shawn you letting him talk and express himself! Top notch!
I started getting frustrated hearing him not want to acknowledge he saved people, then Nick said “Does that mean I didn’t save my guys who didn’t come back” makes me understand completely why he doesn’t want to say he has saved lives. Great interview!
This is definitely an interview that needs to be listened to all the way through. The context that he adds at the end makes everything he says make sense.
Yeah, man. He when he hears he saved people, he can't help but extrapolate that responsibility onto the situations that didn't go as well. It also seems that he sees himself as replaceable. A kind of "Someone else would have been there if I wasn't there." I can understand why it can be so troubling for him and hard to understand and speak on. But my opinion is that at the end of the day, one can't save everyone. People go to war understanding they can't always have a guardian angel. I believe he was in the right place at the right time and altogether it must be net positive. It's a tough job it seems and you can't be expected to be everywhere at once with perfect awareness, quickness, accuracy, and decision making. There aren't many people in these roles as the attrition rates seem to describe so I think replaceability isn't as applicable as it might seem. Altogether, people will be lost, but guys like Nick do their best to prevent that from happening. I hope that one day he sees it from a more positive perspective
Shawn is basically a therapist for these vets.... and I 100% support it! These guys are holding in so much trauma and I am so happy they're able to talk to Shawn and get all this stuff out. Always great to let it out and start the healing process! Thanks Shawn! And thank you Nick for your freaking services! Blessings to all of you!
I've watched this interview 4 times now , there's something about Irvings sincere humility that really hits hard. A true hero that's very humbled and down to earth !!! You truly deserve all the awards and words given and said to and about you !!! I sincerely THANK YOU BOTH for all you've done and continue to do !!!! One of the best interviews ...... DONT EVER APOLOGIZE!!! YOU'VE EARNED THEM !!!!!
Without a doubt, the best interview on any podcast, PERIOD!!! Nick, thank you for standing in the gap. Shawn, keep pulling back the veil and bringing the truth to light. Thank you both for your service!!!
The fact this man had @Shawn's eyes watering from how deep this conversation was should not be over looked. This man has sat and listened to a lot of people and was absolutely captivated by this particular conversation. Thank you shawn and thank you nicholas for everything you've do/done. America/the world cannot thank you both enough.
Regular guy here. Seeing this man cry about the men he couldn’t save while being commended about the ones he saved…it’s heart wrenching. We honestly do not need to be at war this much. I’m 45 and the last time we had peace in my lifetime was a couple of years when the internet took off. It’s just so unnecessary to put these young men thru this ish
I’m a little younger than you and last time I remember any sort of peace end when I was in College on 9/11, fast forward I’m 41y/o and war has just been the new norm smh.
Straight chills, 2 combat deployments to HELLmand 07-11 as a conventional infantry Marine in a line company and could literally follow along visually with his story of the worst mission. We were out on patrol one time on my 1st pump when we setup an LPOP trying to catch some Muj mf’s burying IED’s and the sun started rising with daylight following shortly after and what followed was eerily similar. It sent complete chills down my spine once he got to the part about the town waking up because I already knew what was coming. This is the single best interview that I have ever had the honor of watching or listening to PERIOD. This dude is a legend and I cannot thank SRS and Nick enough for sharing this with the world.
One of my favorite people from any interview to listen to. He speaks.. I listen and think. Knowing what he's experienced, I just feel like his words have more meaning and it comes from a place of sincerity. Thank you for your service and your story! I'm sure it will and has touched many people.
Anyone whinging about this guy, get over yourself. He was an Army Ranger and he deployed and he was in contacts and saved lives. More than I have ever done or most of us will ever do. A true legend. And Shawn, you are a legend for bringing us this show. Thank you mate.
Sean, I’ve been watching your show for a little over a year now, and it has been absolutely awesome watching the change of light pop out in your eyes after you have found Christ. You can truly tell the difference from your older episodes in how much the Lord is working in you in releasing a lot of anger and old hurt. Thank you for all you do and all the positivity you spread. Your show has literally changed my whole perspective on life in so many positive ways. Much love and Semper Fi from Carson City, Nevada brother. 🙌
1st time I heard of Mr. Irving was via Matt on Demolition Ranch and was always one of my favorite reoccurring guests. I knew he had seen a ton of combat and has major accolades but it's always cathartic for me to listen to their stories and all the emotions that come with it. For all my American Brothers and Sisters who served or are currently serving in our Armed Forces, from the absolute bottom of my heart, I would like to thank each and every one of you for the sacrifice. To hell with celebrities, movie stars, and athletes, you all are the real heroes and the best that our Country has to offer.
Same, that's where I first saw him. Also my favorite guest. They always had some great chemistry with their shenanigans. The old-school gatling gun video is definitely the best. Doing drivebys in the mini-van😂👍
This is the first time i ever listened to an interview this long salute to you and all the service men and women for your services...Bless you all for everything 🙏🏾💜✊🏾
Dude, shawn i gotta tell ya. The way you came at the Seal segment so neutrally and letting the man talk is a great example of your character. Not taking an ego approach or being offended just solidifies your character. I really appreciate what you do, much love brother - god bless you and the family.
These types of guests are the REAL celebrities I want to look up to. This guy’s story is fascinating, like so many of your other guests, and I want to watch a movie about his life.
Incredible story! How amazingly brave Nick is to not only survive all the military trauma but childhood trauma as well. Then recounting the most horrific story of engagement he's asking "Am I crying too much man?" The answer is NO. If you weren't emotional you'd be a psychopath or zoned out on antidepressants. Nick, you are BRAVE! Thank you for being vulnerable.
It’s just being in school that probably caused it, I wasn’t great at math either but now I’m out of school and use during plumbing etc I seemed to do just fine better than I was in school
I wasn’t great or remotely good at math in school but once I went into a career in banking and finance, I literally became like rainman. It’s the craziest thing ever 😂😂😂😂
This interview was incredible Shawn. Nick is an American hero and National Treasure and his story should be heard by every American. So honest, so authentic and real, and a true testament to his bravery and the horrors of war that most of us who haven’t experienced it can’t begin to fathom.
Glad this episode came out. Nick will always be my leader. Listening to Him brings back many memories. Like I always said and told him, “ you’re the Seal team 6 that was never a seal team 6.” He’s a badass man. Good to see him alive. 6 hours is not enough for everything he went through. Will always be thankful, he saved a lot of our lives.
Mr. Irving. I am 44 years old. I have a wife of nearly 22 years. A 20yo daughter in the USAF in Germany, and an 18yo son that just got his first job at an auto parts store and is about to start nursing school. I have never been in the military. Although it is deep in my family history. An injury in high school took me out of any consideration for a military career. I have spent my life as a paramedic, with some years in law enforcement and in an SRT. I want to say after watching this, that interview’s like this make it clear that warriors like yourself give up a massive part of your lives, that you will never get back. To you, to your comrades, fallen and living, I thank you. Politics is no factor, because the reality is that you and your brothers and sisters carried out these tasks so that we did not have to. I want you to know that everything you went through was for me and my family, and millions of families like mine. Thank you sir. Thank you to your lovely and sweet wife for staying by you through everything. And thank you Shawn Ryan, for bringing the realities of what our warriors endured and still do, and will continue to do so every day until the last. God bless you. This Country loves the both of you, you are National treasures.
I listened to this entire episode on the podcast, I didn’t know what he looked like, nor his facial expressions or body language, however I have never, ever, been so heavily, and emotionally invested in a single, human, experience, on any of your shows Shawn. I’m a female, age 48, from Australia and we can’t fully understand how war, or how the military, truly works or the impact on those that serve. Not here in Australia, we just can’t understand how Americans are so passionate about service and protecting their country and bearing arms. But this episode, this one episode with this incredible, inspiring, compassionate, genuine, kind man, broke me. I could not stop listening, if I fell asleep, I’d go back to where I remembered in the podcast and I would listen until I fell asleep again, and then I’d rewind and repeat, rewind and fall asleep and repeat this process for 5.5 hours. This man is a hero, he’s a legend, he’s a true gentleman and he has so much life to live, talent to share and love to give. I can’t actually describe the way I feel after this podcast, but I know I am changed, I know I feel and think differently, and I know that I am grateful for his story and he’s blessed by God. God has always been in his life, it wasn’t the right place at the right time, or luck, it was his inner strength and inner spirit and character power, and connection to God that sees him here today. I want happiness and peace for you my friend ~ you are special ❤️🙏

I doubt Nick will ever read this. But bro, thank you for showing what a man should look like. Human, Vulnerable, Humility, stoic, and I 100% know you will never see yourself the way you are viewed. I know this because I am the same way, please understand, I have done nothing like you, I don’t think I’ll ever have the chance to do as much as you have. But I grew up rough and had to fight a lot, and mostly not started by me. Parents and family and friends always ask me why, and my answer was always “those are my guys, I want them to get home and if that happened to me they would do the same thing”. They didn’t approve most of the time. So I felt that in my heart when you said that. You are truly the definition of, to me at least, what a man should be. Flawed, thoughtful, imperfect, deeply caring, has trials and tribulations, open. I could go on dude. Just, thank you for being you. No matter how much you don’t like it, there’s people out here that hear your story and want to change their lives. I’m no sniper, but I’ve been procrastinating a long time and I’ve made the decision to try and be a firefighter. Much love ❤#teamreaper
I listened to this today wiring a house. Sat in an empty room by myself and almost shed a coulle tears for this man, but just like he said. It must have been something else. Thanks for your service brother.
This man’s story is incredible, he’s so straight forward and tells it how it is no matter who it may offend. Thank you both for your service and everything you do for the community, we need more men like these 2!
love these two coming together and chatting but man killed me when he was talkin so casual about voodoo and floating people lol man had me googling all kinds of stuff within 15 mins lol great interview for sure! worth every minute
This might be the very best episode yet. God bless this brave warrior, not only on the battlefield but in that seat spilling out his heart and experiences in the most humble way. America is grateful for you, Sergeant Irving.
Thank you for sharing. I admire the openness and think it's so important for jaded Americans to know the real sacrifice veterans make and how truly heroic their bravery is. 🇺🇸 Godbless u and all the brave men u served with.
I’m blown away by the energy coming off Nick when he tells the story of his worst mission. I can feel the sadness, anger, and fear pouring out of him. I truly hope it’s therapeutic for him to tell his stories, it is for those hearing him. Thank you for sacrificing your life for America. You are not who you were when you enlisted and the Americans you sacrificed that person for, appreciate you sir.
The best episode to date. I was in tears. This brother is real and serves our country well, along with his comrades. Thank you all who serve !! The great State Of Ohio is grateful for you all.
Did it in bits, but watched the whole thing. Man I'm glad I did. Nicks thoughts on spirituality are so close to mine I think him saying it was an affirmation to me I'm in the right direction. 100/10
I am a USMC 0311 Veteran that served in Afghanistan thank you Nick for opening up and being real and raw definitely helps out our community. That was an epic podcast love your stuff man.
I don't care if he said he can fly like superman and see through walls. The guy is a certified legend. Talk your trash, you couldn't do anything as exceptional as this man has done.
Shawn, you do an exceptional job of allowing space for guests to share. Your breaks are timed well and allow you to set the stage after for a subject you’re interested in and listen again without interjecting. Masterful.
What an interview. Nick is a good man & Shawn is a beast of a facilitator and asks the right questions at the RIGHT TIME. Allowing Nick to tell his story. This is one hell of a story Nick. Thank you for your service my friend
Shawn you are the standard for interviewing. You allow your guests to not only speak without being interrupted, but you let them feel their emotions and paint the picture of the missions as they seen it. Absolutely fantastic!
I was a recon marine and I remember hearing rumors about this dude.. scout snipers were pissed at the action he was getting. They would’ve never admitted that he was better than them and that the army was winning the comps at the time. Fucking love this dude.
This is the realest interview with a military veteran Iv ever heard. Down to the smell and taste, incredible. Iv literally never heard anything like this. Thank you for your service Nick Irving!
I didn’t think I was gonna sit here for this long, but damn man that story had me. My respect, completely. We owe him and others everything. Men like Nick owe us nothing, men like that paid what we take for granted. May he heal and keep that pain hidden where it belongs. Thank you Nick.
I’m on my 12th time watching this in pieces (come back and pick it up). Every time I hear the same stuff but it resonates more and more. He’s a brave man. He’s vulnerable. He’s a warrior. He’s an American. He’s a husband. He’s HUMAN. And I owe him a large piece of appreciation for helping ease me through some recent therapy sessions that had sent me for a tail spin. I don’t know what it is…. Love the show, love Nick, love America! God Bless!!!
Man I finally decided to search this interview up after seeing countless clips. I’m on day 3 of watching it and I’m not mad at it, I’ve been wanting to hear every word Nick speaks. VERY WELL coordinated interview, staying on topic and able to remain on the points no matter the story length at the time. That to me shows a dedicated interviewer like no other! Not even half way through yet and this is awesome
For my 8 years of service in the Army I never felt that I made a difference. Even with 1 deployment and 1 rotation. I thought because I wasn’t a door kicker, medic, or pilot that it just never mattered. I was just a regular degular unappreciated conventional guy with little training. I separated on 01Apr24 and I finished this video yesterday around 1830. I witnessed a car slam into a semi 3 hours later and for some reason I jumped out of my semi, helped break her car door open and began to triage her and keep her calm. It wasn’t until this morning when I saw her blood on my shirt that I felt that I was possibly able to make a small impact on someone’s life for the better. I was actually proud of myself and my service. Idk if it’s true, but I think I may have helped that lady.
I was in the Navy. Deployed twice. I helped Evacuate Americans out of Lebanon even going ashore to get them. Then got out got into corrections and saved lives administering first aid. You did your job brother!
One of the best stories I've read in a while. You made a difference. Heroes are ordinary people who step forward and make a difference. Thanks for sharing.
At 3 hours in, when he acknowledges his discomfort with having people tell him he saved their lives, I hear humility. Like his Soul understands outcomes are out of his hands. Respect
@@teddy.d174a sincere thanks is ok, to a point. I hate the false hero worship, or undeserved praise for doing our job. It hurts when you get praise for saving 1 but lost the last 5. You always want to help the entire 6. Not being there or not being able to help is one of the hardest things to accept.
It speaks volumes to his character to be honest about not only his accolades but also about not being “perfect”, making mistakes, and his struggles. Amazingly raw and real and greatly appreciated.
As a career military member , now retired , I have served with Vets in every American conflict since WW2, This is one of the most compelling story I have ever heard,Thank you Sean for bringing another American hero forth for us to hear their story
His story is one of hundreds from our time in Ranger Regiment, honored to have served and trained with him. We didn't know half of this stuff from his childhood until now, and we drank a lot of beer together over the memories he shared.
The one thing I love most about Shawn is when he’s doing an interview there’s no interruptions during their story. He always waits till their done finishing their thought or story then asks any questions.
Nick you weren’t saving just lives beside you… YOU were protecting and saving lives all across America! I heard you when you said you didn’t want that “Thank You”. I’m whole heartedly sorry for what you’ve experienced and gone through, but from just a normal American Citizen, who didn’t have the courage to enlist, I have to Thank You for having that courage to enlist. Not only were you just doing your job, or just there to protect & save the man next to you, or not just to protect & save your family state side, but I THANK YOU for protecting and saving me and my family in The United States of America! God Bless You Nick, & God Bless your Family for supporting you to protect them, as well as, all of American People! Shawn Ryan - " You liked being there or you didn't know how to be anywhere else?" That question right there was intensely deep. Shawn, you listen a little too well, is the compliment for you. Kudos man. Wooooow 🙌🏾👏🏾
I am dissecting this interview by shawn ryan and Mr Nick Irving. For two days... trying to find every lesson Mr. Irving is telling us. I will be buying all of his books.
Nick is so extremely Humble. I have much respect for a man that can be this humble. I think this interview was therapeutic for him. I am from a family of veterans and the silence, not talking about the war really ate at them emotionally over the years.
This is one of your absolute best interviews imo. It is very good and informative. Nick seems like such a normal dude. The best example of a person I could see myself in the role of a soldier in a war. He is so relatable. I really found this interview increadible. Thank you two for this. It is good to listen to even though it is a heavy and raw subject, war. As a European civilian I can´t really see myself in war, ever. But this interview makes me relate to that experience a lot.
This is hands down the absolute best episode of any form of infotainment I have EVER encountered. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and your profound spiritual views. I am utterly gobsmacked and will never be the same.
You can tell everything this guy says is meaningful and straight from the heart..in the beginning when he was talking about his son and said he was already about to choke up I felt that something serious...I have so much respect for this man
Dude, this is my second comment on this video, about 30 minutes from the end. This episode is so much more about life than I expected and what actually matters in life, beyond the military knowledge that Irving is sharing. It's literally reminding me what's actually important in life vs. what's a weird (technological or sociological) distraction. Practice love, don't be extreme in life, take things in stride/ learn to accept. Don't become addicted to phones/tech and don't fall into hedonism.
What an honor it was to listen to both of you veterans in the same interview. Nick has been one of my favorites to follow his heroic and selfless service. It is because of service members like you two that I sleep soundly at night (scarier these days however). Nick is an exemplary gentleman I am thankful to call a fellow American. May God always bless you both.

Sir. Mr.

Yeah basically helped a woman cheat on her man. And said I'll just beat his @$$. Tell me again why Jody don't care about your feelings lmao.
Going to combat is not a flex of something to be proud about. We need to stay out of other peoples country. Did we not learn from vietnam? 99% of population is so dumb an brainwashed thinking we need ro fight wara
Bet the hater keyboard warriors putting in so much time and energy trying to discredit him in these comments will roll right past this one though.
And none of these mf have ever experienced anything remotely close to what he has done
Yes-perfectly said.
Too bad he's running with the narrative of 9/11 being an outside job when he KNOWS it was an INSIDE one.

If you watches interview with Megan Kelly he talks about his interview skills, actually come from his therapist that saved his life
I completely agree and it's incredible to me how few other hosts can or actually practice this style. Rogan is pretty good about it too. But so many other host try to make themselves a focus.
This format shawn has going gives every guest a perfect chance for just stream of consciousness flow
Shawn is a master at his craft, and he only keeps getting better.
He also keeps things orderly & chronological which I love

I’ve watched the srs short version clips on RUclips. 5+ hours, man I am glad I took the time to watch from start to finish. I think Nick is a well spoken man. This is my very first full interview watch and it won’t be my last. I truly appreciate the sacrifices you and your guests made in your lives, weather your service was for political purposes or not, I appreciate that at the very least you sacrificed so much for your brothers standing beside you, if nothing else I could rest with that.
Guys a stone cold killer but simultaneously a normal dude with no ego at all.
Opposite of Tim Kennedy
Thanks for sharing your experiences with him
Beautifully written testament to Nick. Felt the respect shown in your words.
At Rifles Only? The tower, stage, and South Texas wind sound familiar. Thank you for sharing your story.

A glimpse into the man and the reality at the sametime
Thank you, Nick AND every other man or woman that is serving or has served our country. I have the utmost respect for all of you. Thank you
Without a doubt, the best interview on any podcast, PERIOD!!!

This is the most intense and interesting podcast i’ve ever listened to. Incredible guest, what a story
This was an incredible moment. My heart broke for him
I’m a little younger than you and last time I remember any sort of peace end when I was in College on 9/11, fast forward I’m 41y/o and war has just been the new norm smh.
Not to take away from the importance of your comment but you stating you’re 45 then ending it with “ish” was fuckin awesome 🤣🤣🤣

I can literally listen to Nick tell stories for hours bro, one of the most intelligent and down to earth people for someone that seen hell.
Thank you for your service Marine!!
My brother was over there around then as well. PFC or LCPL Johnson Josh was his first name.

He said he was not great at math but is able to do split second calculations in the middle of combat. Humble.

Listening to
Him brings back many memories. Like I always said and told him, “ you’re the Seal team 6 that was never a seal team 6.” He’s a badass man. Good to see him alive. 6 hours is not enough for everything he went through. Will always be thankful, he saved a lot of our lives.
God bless both of you guys. Thank you for this wonderful interview.
Mr.
