The first time I heard Nightwish was in 2019 after Floor participated in the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers'. I immediately became a Flooraholic and checked out her history and binge watched her on RUclips ever since. I never considered me as a metalhead, but experiencing Floor and Nightwish changed my life.

Similar to you I became a Nightwish and Floor addict around 18 months ago at the age of 56 having not previously heard of them. Thanks to a good friend who pestered me in to listening to "The Poet and the Pendulum" live from Wembley 2015 my musical world has been turned upside down and inside out ever since. Prior to this I wouldn't have bothered listening to symphonic metal as I had preconceived ideas about it but not now. Phenomenal band with all members masters of their craft fronted by in my humble opinion the best vocalist that I have ever had the pleasure and privilege to see and hear. 🙏😊👍❤️

Great reaction! I first discovered NightWish 2 years ago while on the internet discovering my ancestry. I was researching Poland, Ireland and Finland, trying to get a sense of what the culture is like. I discovered them when looking into the Music culture and my life has been better than I could have ever dreamed. My whole outlook on life became brighter and more positive. The same year, I managed to see them LIVE and get a Band signed CD. My most treasured possession along with my Floor Jansen 1 of 1000 Debut solo album Autographed boxed set, and of course the Auri 2 album signed by Tuomas, Johanna and Troy.

One of the rare songs that was sung by all 3 vocalists.
One of the rare songs that is not based on an idea of Tuomas.
Its about the solar eclipse of 11.August 1999 in Northern Europe.(...222 days of light....)
(longest time in Romania with 2min30somewhat seconds----greetings to Gabriel Bardac)
As such written and released in 1999 short before the solar eclipse.
Making it into the top-charts in some countries.....
    ....of course Finland No 1.......
I believe the production company ( Drakkar Records) asked him to write a song about it with the addition: please not longer than 3 mins.
Knowing Tuomas...he made it in about 4:30 mins !
This day in 1999 will forever reminded by me as very magical one.
The world stood still...total silence ...even the birds were quiet.....
This version is the best of all time.....(my opinion)

As for me I think my first hearing of Nightwish was in the late 90s, maybe 98 or 99.
I used to wander in a shop that sold TVs, hifi, records, video cassettes... It was a big shop, and the guy who was in charge of the ambiance music was a Nightwish fan, and he kept on putting their songs so loud in the shop !
I was thinking: wow this band is great !! 😍
It was during the time of their 2nd album Oceanborn, and the singer was Tarja...
Then time passed, and I only re-discovered Nightwish with Floor few years ago.
Now I can't spend 1 day without listening to a Nightwish song...

To answer your question... The first time with NIGHTWISH in my life was 2001 (uh-oh, that is a historical fact by now...), when "She Is My Sin" (the opener of "Wishmaster" album, their 3rd) just blew my mind. I was listening to nothing but them for days on end, digging back into the catalogue, marveling at the sophistication of the compositions and the operatic dusky quality of the original singer Tarja's velvety vocals. The "rebirth" of NIGHTWISH with Floor at the mic brought me right back into the band's camp after a period of some turmoil - which really yielded numerous of their best songs!. Floor and Tuomas' crew together was a union of my favorite artists, probably the one event in music last decade to live up to, and overshoot, the expectations.
Thank you for discovering this band with us! Long may they reign.

Back when we had metal magazines, we would see ads and reviews of bands, and in 2000... Century Media put out an ad for the Nightwish album 'Wishmaster' w/ a picture of Tarja, the original singer... That was the first time I heard of them. I bought a copy of 'Wishmaster' around 2001 and the moment Tarja's voice came on the first song 'She is my sin'... I was blown away. I had never heard an opera singer in a metal band and the whole record was a revelation for me. I bought the entire Nightwish catalog and finally got to see them live in 2004 at a club in Minneapolis (which was the only US tour they did w/ Tarja on vocals before she was fired in 2005).

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to discover Nightwish, a phenomenal symphonic rock band. Up until then, the only other band of this genre that had captured my attention was Epica. It was during this musical exploration that I stumbled upon Nightwish's enchanting melody, "Sleeping Sun." From the very first moment that this captivating tune graced my ears, I was instantly enamored. The harmonious fusion of orchestral elements and rock instrumentation within the song swept me off my feet, leaving an indelible mark on my soul.

Sleeping Sun is a song not often played but is treated with respect from fan, not a song to get crazy with. First experience had to be around 2004-05 when I watched the music channels and it was I wish I had an Angel appeared on Kerrang, didn't care for it and didn't know the band name. Who knew come 2013-14 I would re-find NIghtwish and listen to them since.

One of the early Songs, it is about the solar eclipse "two hundred and twenty two days of light will be desired by the night". Because that's the amount of time that went by before the eclipse (11th of August was the 223rd day of the year 1999). At that time their german record Label asked to write a song about it. One of the terms was "not longer than 3 minutes", Knowing Tuomas, he made it 4+
But it's also true that everyone has a different view of this song.
Usually something they have experienced themselves.

In 2019 I had caught the music reaction channel bug and, on a reaction video from a channel I was frequenting regularly, a video from their channel for "Ghost Love Score" @Wacken '13 was at the very top of the "recommended video" section to the right. I had never heard of Nightwish before. I clicked on it and it was love at first listen. Then came Floor on "Beste Zangers" that Summer. All that time sharing the experience with other Nightwish fans I'd meet in the comment sections and often say hi to (such as the dearly missed Ann Waychoff) made my frequently difficult days so much happier.

The song is about the extended period of darkness that Northern Finland (which is inside the Arctic circle) experiences during the year.

actually i believe it was about the solar eclipse in 1999 which hadn't happened for a long long time, so Tuomas was asked to write a song for it. In the years after he said he would never do such a thing again, writing a song about a particular subject on request, as music should come from the heart not forced

This is one of oldest Nightwish hits. From album "Oceanborn" back in 1998. You were right about the solar eclipse. I personally did hear Nightwish also in -98 from a german music channel Viva. I immediately knew it was something different.

Pardon the slight correction. _Sleeping Sun_ was not originally in *Oceanborn* in -98 since the solar eclipse happened in August of -99 and that's when the single was first released. It was added to the reissue of Oceanborn in -99.

As awesome as Floor is this song was made for Tarja's more Operatic style! The heavier remix is PERFECT with the soldiers in battle!

The only song that I would honestly say you need tarja singing not floor . It's just another level with tarjas voice

This isn't a song you go wild to. It's melancholic and ethereal, the kind of song that makes a "fanbase audience" turn on the phone flashlights and wave them in the air.

First time heard *Nightwish* in -97. First time saw them live in -98. Three guys in the band still had relatively short hair because they had recently got out of doing military service. Come to think of it, Sami, the bass player, was the only long-haired band member, which was kind of an anomaly at the time for most metal bands.

Think I heard Nightwish first time around 1998-1999. Didn't really care about the operatic singing. I was more into thrash; Metallica, Testament, etc. I'm Finnish btw. Then later maybe 2002-2003 I bought Nightwish 1997-2001 four cd "box set". Don't remember why, maybe it was on sale or I was just curious. Tarja's singing really grew on me and the songs are great on those albums.

The first time I heard nightwish was 2007, the song Gethsemane off of their 1999 album Oceanborn, at that point ive heard a few metal bands incorporate operatic vocals in their music, but it was never on this level. I know reacting to Floor Jansen is popular among reaction youtubers, but I wish more people went out of their way to listen to Nightwish's back catalogue. People are missing out on how special Tarja Turunen was.

Im sure that the crowd was very much engaged. This is just one of those songs that really gets to you. When I saw them last November in Amsterdam they played this song.
I was crying so hard and singing so loud but ofc that doesn’t show from a diatant.
The camera angle of the crowd shots are very boring in this video.
If you’ve seen “last ride of the day” from the same show you will see the Nightwish Army at its best.

This is a version sung by Floor Jansen, their third and current vocalist. Their original singer, Tarja Turunen, and opera soprano who was too good for them (just being honest hardcore Nightwish fans... lol) sang it much better with seemingly less effort, as great singers often can. 😎😌
