If your course has some pop punk stuff like this in it, I’m definitely getting it for my birthday in a few weeks!
Love the video, favorite one you’ve made
@@yungdnny The techniques shown throughout can be applied to any genre, but a lot of the examples used are taken from pop punk / punk compositions. There's definitely a healthy amount of it in the course!
Finally, I'll be Tom DeLonge.

I haven't seen anyone else put the time and passion into riff writing like you do. Thank you
Sure dude, happy to help!
I love the drone stuff a lot. But sometimes I think I accidentally make things in weird time signatures and it makes me feel less pop punk ☹️
Haha yeah I feel like I used to do a similar thing when I first started writing songs. I always ended up writing in 3/4 or in a weird swing rhythm, for whatever reason.
You can be a trail blazer! Math rock/pop punk??
I had the same “issue”. I often create riffs that don’t fit in 4/4 and i feel like my riff is wrong but it doesn’t, i only have to think in other time signature, that is it. My best riff actually is split in 2 bars: one is 6/4 and the seconde one in 7/4 and it sounds great.
Be rad if you made a full online music theory class for punk
Haha yeah that might be a cool idea. My guitar course is probably the closest thing I have to anything like that currently, but I'll definitely be looking to expand into other areas in the future. There's not a ton of information out there on writing and producing punk, so that's something that I want to try and change.
Ты как луч света среди всех этих непонятных видео, которые либо объясняют всё то, что ты и так давно знаешь, либо объясняют настолько специфически, что применить эти знания становится тяжело. Спасибо тебе!
Thanks man, that's great to hear. I'm glad you're finding these videos useful!

This comment definitely wins! They are correct!
Dude, your videos are extremely inspiring! We need more human beings on this earth like you!!! Cheers!

It’d be cool if you did a similar video on how to make good lead punk/ska bass riffs for songs
I have absolutely no clue what most of this is all about, but I enjoy these videos anyway, it's always fun to see how my childhood music is created, keep it up!
Wow, someone who likes pop punk AND has a Mass Effect avatar? I really want you at my birthday party!
@@cedricrickdelsol9767 Haha, now if we could combine both of those? Skate park inside the Normandy perhaps? I may not be able to get to your bday party but I wish you an early/late happy birthday comrade!!
This is so helpful. I don’t know keys and scales at all but write a lot and this helps me start to put some structure around my ideas. Feels like a cheat sheet to get where I want to faster. Thanks!
No problem. That's great to hear it's helped!
Thrash part, mosh part, thrash part, 000-00--000-00--- and a slogan!
I recognised that high riff so bad but couldn’t place it, played it through in my head to get to the lyrics and I was like ah crap they’re in Japanese, that doesn’t help identify it lol (I’ve figured it out now, WANIMA)
I still need help coming up with solos
I love that you use reason! I've been using it for years and love the rack. What are you using for your drum tracks because they sound nice 👍
I use a few different ones - the main two being Superior Drummer 2 and GGD's Modern & Massive.
@@SugarpillProd I've been using ezdrummer 3 which is vst3 and not able to use in reason currently but just use the stems. I'll have to check out GGD.
Yeah GGD runs through Kontakt, so that should work fine in Reason. I believe they've updated to Superior 3 now, so I'm not sure if that's only VST3, but Superior 2 works fine, if you're still able to buy the older version.
What is the name of the song at 1:11? If you wrote it yourself - the full version is wildly required, it's sick af!
can't get this riff out my head - simple but brilliant, nice tone btw
@@WhitePunk420 Thanks! Yeah it was just something I wrote for one of my older videos.

Atticus?????you could be my long lost brother. Keep it up bruv this is great
That strat you have, with the tortoise shell pick guard...
I've got the Tele🤣🤣🙆♂️🍻
I love it and honestly I struggle to write outside of what I play. I can't tell you how many garageband files I have of pop punk songs I tried to write but just didn't work.
I also really want to know how you get such a beautiful tone and mix. I use logic pro amps on garageband, but I still can never get anything close to that sound. Is it that I'm using garageband? Or am I just doing something wrong?
I'll also add that I'm going through a steinberg ur-12 into a macbook pro. I have a gibson les paul as well.
I've heard out of all the DAW's that GarageBand can be quite limited in what you can do, but I can't speak personally, as I've never it used it myself.
As far as my tones go, I use an Axe Fx II for almost everything. Sometimes I'll use the odd amp sim - usually a Neural DSP one - but it's mostly the Axe Fx you're hearing in 90% of my videos. It's not essential to have something like that though, there's plenty of great amp sims out there - both paid for and free versions. I think the biggest thing is to first work out what kind of guitar sounds you enjoy, and then look into what plugins / gear is out there, that can give you that sound. It helps if you at least have a few sounds you like as references, because "good guitar tone" is pretty subjective, so you just need to nail down the sounds you like first, and then try to chase that tone.
Regarding the mix, there's quite a bit going on, as mixing is pretty in-depth. If you have any specific questions about certain areas you're struggling with, I'd be happy to offer you some advice. Unfortunately, I can't really give you one short answer of how to get a good mix, as it's really about doing lots of little things that will eventually add up to a great sounding mix.
@@SugarpillProd thank you for the reply, sorry for taking like a month to get back! (That’s ADHD for you).
The axe looks great but is waaay out of budget to me, the only two I could pick up would be Reason and the dbx 286s.
In terms of gear/daw, would that make a significant difference?
I’ve never used a preamp outside of my steinburg. So I’m not sure of the difference
@@strawbunnyoat I wouldn't suggest those as "fixes" for your issues. The DBX helps to give you that extra 10% when recording certain instruments, but it's not going to be a night and day difference.
With regards to Reason, I just personally really like the workflow, and I'm so used to it that I find it to be the best for my personal needs. However, what DAW you use really comes down to your own preferences. I'd suggest trying out a bunch, and see what one clicks for you.
There's no inherent sound or anything to any DAW, the main differences are the workflow, and what comes bundled with them - like plugins, virtual instruments, etc. You'll often find people who work in similar genres tend to favour one over the other - like Ableton is predominantly used for Electronic styles, and the Djent guys seem to like Reaper more.
Part of your problem could also just be tracking. I find people spend far too much time worrying about their tone, but not enough time spent on how best to track certain parts in their song. Like should you quad track the rhythm guitars, or maybe a certain lead part would benefit from being double tracked. Those things are massively overlooked, and, to me, are far more important than amp tone.
Why does step one sound like interpol obstacle 1 riff and can you do a revival post punk riff inspiration please 🥺
0:44 sounds like japanese pop-punk vibes
That's because it is haha!
@sugarpill what do you use to create drums?
I have a lot of different libraries, but my main two are Superior Drummer 2 & Modern and Massive. Then I usually use one of my own drum packs to speed up the writing process, or just write them entirely from scratch, if I'm feeling adventurous haha.
Love your videos dude, only began watching about a month ago. But tell me.. HOW do you still have Atticus shirts in good condition?! The few I still have are faded and falling apart 😅
Tbf a few have holes in, you just can't see them on camera, haha!

What are those chords at the beginning, are they the octave of the original ones?
Sorry, which bit do you mean?
The bit where it shows what key you're in by the chords
@@DDSPYDR If I've got the right part that you're referring to, then it's just maj7(omit 3) chord, and you move the root around to match the note of the bass line.
