Solar Fields is just the right mix of breathy and futuristic, without feeling too generic like most techno/trance is. They have various rhythmic mix-ups to ensure the mix never gets stale, while still managing to keep it good background music. Not even Daft Punk or the Tron: Legacy's music producers could do passive ambience this well.
They showed up to Mirror's Edge: Catalyst. It's just a shame that DICE didn't.
These are thoughts I had for years that you have only now put into words.

Mirror's Edge was one of the most atmospheric game I played. Congratulations to DICE and Solar Fields.
Mirror's Edge was peak DICE. Their most original game at a time when the studio was pushing boundaries.

When I first played this as a kid I didn't process this ambience as music, I always thought that this is just what the city sounded like.
I liked catalyst but there's nothing like the first one, the concrete, the light, the 2000s design of buildings and cars, the construction sounds everywhere, the feeling of an ominous clean, harsh, city. It wasn't futuristic/cyberpunk like catalyst, but the japanese and russian letters made it look like a city of a parallel universe or something, and also the 2008 nostalgia *sigh *
edit: there is no russian letters, my bad. I think I got confused with half life 2
I have the same impressions from the first ME. Stunning visual design. And breakthrough graphics and gameplay for 2008
That's exactly what that I thought was missing in Catalyst. The first one made you feel like a dystopia that could exist in our world, it felt real.
From the fresh painted concrete to the solar panels on the rooftops, it had a very grounded feel to it.
@@andarax8 it felt like any modern city just insanely clean and devote of most colours.
I bet if someone loaded up the levels and added paint that one would find in real life, dirt and grim the place would feel like today's(2008) New york or other EU city.
2008 one of the best year's for gaming so many great games released that year and a lot of nostalgia from that time the first mirror's edge atmosphere was something that couldn't be recreated the city had a great aesthetic look.

The sterile white buildings, the deep blue skies, the bold primary colors, the Solar Fields tracks.... TAKE ME THERE
Is it weird to miss somewhere I’ve never physically been to before? I feel homesick. I feel like I’ve felt this city before, smelled the concrete, felt the sun paired a nice warm breeze. Like I’ve ran these rooftops before.
Mirrors Edge will always be one of the best games ever made.

Yeah, it's a strange feeling. It's like I feel at home in this virtual city that I can never go to. Maybe it's related to the childhood nostalgia. Who knows.

Same, this is why I keep coming back to this music or game, this is why I modded the game so it removed any limits so I could explore the rest of it, I don’t know why but I always felt drawn to this place.
It's a city that should have been, if we haven't made a wrong turn somewhere in the past.
the art design of this game is breathtaking. It is so visionary that even now in 2023 it looks edgy and different. It hasn't aged at all. This is one of the best games I have ever played. music , grpahics , gameplay simply perfect. Thank you Johannes for art direction.

Well the first of many I'm doing for this game. I have about 15-20 videos already recorded and will try finishing the game before Cyberpunk comes out in December. A lot of the music is going to be just basic extensions but there are some that will take more time to tweak and mix together properly. As with Catalyst no requests are required considering I already plan to do most of the game including some mixed music and background ambience videos. I had a ton of requests to do this game over the last year so I finally decided to play through it recently. I enjoyed Catalyst a lot more but I still enjoyed the first game.
Curious to know, which titles had your favourite ambient tracks this entire generation (2013 - 2020) & especially the one/ones that made you passionate enough to start this wonderful YT channel?

This music is a perfect start of the day. It's also superb for listening when you're on an airplane flight... not during take off, but rather when the airplane is slowly leveling off and is above the clouds. Heaven!
I remember when this game came out when I was in HS definitely was one of the most distinct visual styles of a game I have ever seen. Always thought Mirrors edge was absolutely gorgeous. The beauty of the city makes me almost want to live in the Dystopian city almost....
I played the demo in 7th grade and immediately knew it was going to be a unique work of art

Everything is made out of reflective white surfaces, mirrors and a minor touch of very light shiny colors like light blue, light orange, light yellow etc. , It is genius
The music is chill and ambient perfectly fitting the design, colors and setting the proper mood for the game
This game completely changed the way I look at things, i am making sure that my apartment looks as shiny, white, colorful and reflective as mirror's edge
It is as really beautiful design, me and my friend call such colors (mostly reflective whites + mirrors + light colors) "Twixtor colors"
I made a few Mirror's Edge Catalyst items for my room. Might need to make some more as my current room doesn't really fit the lighting fixture. Sigh

As a game 'not my thing' (The 1st person parkour gave me serious, horrible motion-sickness) but, boy.. was it STYLISH! That harsh light, the clean lines, the minimalist use of colour. Fantastic! Music was also great. Didn't finish more than the demo, but bought the full soundtrack nonetheless.

Exactly what I am doing. Got up early today morning. Flight Pope cutscene for 1 hour. Had a coffee. Then some English practice. Flight combat music, 1 hour. Then it's nearing midday. Edge daytime ambience , 1 hour.
Yes. Voluntary home quarantine. It ends for me on Friday. (Our goverment is corrupt and hasn't ordered a full lockdown yet. But I had been packing COVID-cadavers 2 weeks ago. Forcibly removed from a children's hospital where I had been working. I quit my 'job'. If packing cadavers means 'job', I'd rather be unemployed.
I'll survive. That's what we do. As Faith would say. I'm doing a 2-year medical translator-interpreter school, though. So not just idly sitting at home. Fortunately, we have been in a digital classroom since September. But that's an isolated case. Nearly every school is still open in Hungary.
Callaghan is in denial. There's no Pope in sight.
Many stopped fighting. Accepted everything.
But I am doing what I feel is right. I didn't choose a comfortable life.

Just saying, For the past week I've had this particular ambience on loop while I work, play games and sleep. I've done a week's marathon of listening to this and I've never felt so chilled out. I loved this game but I have really slept on the OST here. I'm glad I have the chance to do this now.
