The second I saw you camping the ancient cyclops, I knew you were after the Jboots.
Gosh, I remember camping those on my SK way back when, right before it was set to be changed from a drop to a quest. I'm all about speedy travel, so I have to have these things on ALL my characters. Period. Even if they have a horse and max Run Speed AAs, still gotta have the Jboots. When they introduced the upgraded version during the May events, of course I had to get those for all my characters, but the originals remained in their banks as a testament to the time and effort it went into getting them.
(As one of the last on The Rathe server back in the early 2000s to get the Jboots from Drelzna, it took me 3 days of non-stop camping to work my way to the top of the list. No sleep, little food, mostly just Dr. Pepper and pure cussedness to see me through. When my turn came, the person behind me looted them instead, on the premise that I was "too low a level to really be helping with DPS." My SK had leveled from 16 to 24 there, and while my DPS wasn't as high as the 30s I was with, it wasn't negligible, either. So I left, went to the EC tunnel, and asked if anyone could help me out with a bunch of ninja-looters. A Level 50 Magician grouped with me, we went in, and he outright nuked the next spawn of Drelzna into prehistory. And she had the boots! So, good people abound; they certainly outnumber the bad, and that's something we should all keep in mind.) 🥲

I will second this. I started an Iksar Warrior and by the time I was level 6 I was finding constant groups to xp farm with at the Field of Bone, and got a guild invite. People were giving out buffs, items and tips, so it becomes infectious. I was giving away equipment I was outgrowing to people at lower levels so they didn't have to grind the plat for purchases like I did. The community is fantastic.

I came back to a free to play Everquest weekend or some such, YEARS after not playing. I was on Tallon Zek as a Troll. In the "Army of Grobb". We were a group of light RP enthusiasts who ran around being trolls. It was great fun, my main character was a warrior, and I logged into him and realized, well, Grobb doesn't exist anymore for trolls.
I think I died like 10 times trying to get out of the dangerous areas because I spawned getting attacked by Frogloks. Either way, I ran myself out there and I ended up in the Commonlands, running around reliving some memories and I run into this troll. He's like level five or something.
I run up to him and I'm in the "Army of Grobb" still, but there are no real members that I can see anymore. I do the normal shtick with troll stuff, "Grobb, Grobb! Smashum! Bashum!" You know, all that fun stuff and the low level troll rolls with it! He starts going the light RP about being a troll, and I talk about how I'm like the last remaining member of the Army of Grobb because those darn Frogloks.
I'm not planning on playing, really, but over the time I played I did acquire some really good gear for back in the day. Haste sash. Wymslayer, regen tunic, full Crafted set, resist rings(this was a pvp server). After our troll conversation, I invite him into the Army of Grobb and tell him that he must take on the legacy and continue the good fight to get our city back.
I gave him all of my gear. Every single piece, all my plat, everything. He went from some level 5 with barely a stick to his name to kitted out in full gear, looking like a badass and Gambuk the troll retired to some swamplands to live out his remaining days.
Years later, I find out that Grobb was taken back by the trolls, and I wonder if it was that troll that led the charge.
One of my favorite memories and I have so many great ones with Everquest. I've considered coming back to try and play Project 1999.

The Algorithm spoke today and nostalgia it is. Man this brings back memories. My childhood / teen years were defined by an insane amount of hours in EQ. I'll never forget the community and sense of wonder. I don't regret that time spent at all, just sad that no game will ever replicate that experience.
The official progression servers were a blast for a while but of course the raid guilds wanted to speed run the game unfortunately.

I was an original player back in 1999 and recently had the urge to watch some old footage. I had no idea people still played so it’s been a joy to see dungeons and zones I never got to visit. I had a 51 Druid, 42 monk and numerous level 20 classes back in the day. I remember my guild mates doing the jboots quest but never needed it on my Druid so never knew the effort involved. One guildie got a lucky cyclops kill after a server reset and he was so happy and now I know why!

I enjoyed this video. It did make me laugh a bit when you talked about a 5-hour camp for the ancient cyclops. I played back at start when J-boots were dropped by Drelzna in the dungeon Najena. That was a camp with a list, just like OoT, but there were ALWAYS 6 people in the camp. I camped it for 24 hours straight and was only 3rd on the list when I finally gave up. They changed it up not too long after that to this quest format, but by then I was 2-boxing a druid and didn't care to get them.
I never did the Raster camp for the monk epic, but that was another one that could often take days straight.

I switched to EQ2 when it came out but was a level 56 bard before that. I did a fair bit of the bard epic quest so a lot of this video brings back memories lol. Back in 1999 or 2000 I spent 38 hours straight camping the gold ring in Kerra isle for the Paw of Opalla quest which was the last item I needed and it was a green camp ( green was the lowest con then ) only to find out that the camp was bugged. Never got back to that camp but the very next time I played someone asked me for a teleport which I provided and when asked if there was anything they could do for me I jokingly said "Yeah give me a gold ring for the Paw of Opalla guest" and they actually had one on them and gave it to me. You mentioned Karnor's Castle was one of the most memorable dungeons for players. I went there here and there but I didn't do enough of it to have it imprinted in my mind. I'll list my most memorable dungeons down below.
I was like 15 or 16 years when I started playing EQ and I was not very good. I started as a Dark Elf Wizard and maxed him during classic and even did raids. I quit at some point for awhile and even traded my account for a PC. When I came back I started over as a Barbarian Rogue around Luclin or PoP. I was a young adult and smarter so I knew to research things to optimize my character and damage.
Lower Guk: I could still navigate this place as I did it on so many characters. I even farmed the rep to get the High Elf Illusion Crown. This was probably my favorite dungeon in all of EQ and in all MMOs until I got to do Blackrock Depths in WoW.
Najena: This isn't my favorite dungeon but I remember it because this was my first dungeon that I was in a full group for and earned a lot of loot from.
Sebilis: I loved this dungeon and it remanded me of Solusek's Eye with it being a Raid inside of a dungeon. This place was huge and I loved it.

Man, I played from the end of Kunark through Planes of Power, and so much of this brought back so many memories for me, swarm kiting is still to this day the coolest "feature" i've ever seen in any game, period.
I worked with some people who were on the dev team at sony, one of them was a programmer and when I told him I had a bard and loved crowd kiting (that's what we called swarming back in the day) he almost convulsed, he said he had nightmares about the bard code, all over their code base the game was built without taking bards into account, and then the bard class was added later and so they had to have a lot of "if bard == true" checks throughout their code to accommodate the class. If you have ever written code you know how bad that is.
Anyways, I recognized everything here, thanks for the nostalgia hit. Brought back the mems for sure.

Lol nice vids man. I played Kunark at release and remember wearing banded armor for way too long. I played Iksar shadow knight and vaguely remember at that time it was a thing that Iksar couldn't wear plate so banded was my armor for a long time.
I ended up being top sk on server for a long time, reputation mattered in that game and I'd get group requests all the time. Funny thing is clinging darkness and disease cloud, even though low level spells, I noticed early on that they drew agro like nothing else. So where warriors struggled to keep agro, it was easy for me. And I mastered feign death pulling asap once I realized power of monks; sks had a cast time, but it worked well if you knew how to use it. I think I was the first iksar sk to 60 on my server, and through years of play there was only one other iksar sk that challenged me for groups/guilds/etc.
I got my epic, but I remember there was a dark elf sk from a competing guild that got their epic before me. All sks were friends though because they were a kinda scarce class, so we had a kind of solidarity despite guild, and would often talk and share strats.

    • @IonBlaze1

I had no clue about all the SK stuff. Thank you so much for sharing all that info. Cool story

    • @blake33x
      @blake33x 11 месяцев назад +1

@@IonBlaze1 Yeah, they were a pretty awesome class, and probably the best group tank, and raid split tank. In some ways they were better than monks at pulling. Feign death was only 1sec cast I think. Plus they had darkness, so you could darkness one mob and fd then others would run back to spawn fast and you could grab the snared one. Pulling was fun and took some skill. You probably already know this, but in case you don't, if a mob casted spell hits you after you fd then the fd fails, so you had to be aware of mob casters and spell cast times to time some pulls correctly.
They could also get almost anywhere in a dungeon, so I could pull named enemies from deeper in, or camp spawns solo myself. I had a prenerf circlet of shadow, which was like a prereq for sks. You could feign death to lose agro then pop up and insta invis. Plus they had invis to undead if needed. To top it off, they had a spell similar to the bard one you mentioned to reduce agro ranges, but I think it was only for undead.
The disease cloud/clinging darkness agro was so high as well that if paying attention they could just immediately pull agro from warrior tank if you had one in the group and you saw them low hp and thought the heal might not hit in time. They also had some AoE spells so if you didn't have a bard or enchanter you could more easily hold agro on multiple mobs where a warrior might struggle.
I think later on they added dedicated agro spells, but they were't as good as those mentioned. I vaguely remember they even nerfed disease cloud agro, but clinging darkness still worked and was fast cast.
And some other things were, they had dispell so you could debuff mobs on pull, and sometimes this could even be used to split because after debuff other mobs would recast buffs. Finally, later on I think they added some kind of group mana regen that you cast on the mob and it gives group a little mana. And because of fear kiting they could solo well. They just had so much utility, that it seemed like they could do anything in the world, and people loved a good sk in group

Haha, had to laugh as soon as I saw the Ancient Cyclops. That grind is literally responsible for me quitting EverQuest, and not because I did it myself, but because my friends I played with decided to do it and it sounded so awful to me that I started playing Divine Divinity and fell in love with it and had my first break with MMORPG obsession since Ultima Online's beta hit, and never really was as into them again afterward

Getting my jboots was a living hell for me on Rallos Zek. Either a group was there that wanted to hunt you down and kill you, or someone shown up to take the camp. EVERY.FRICKING.CAMP!!!!
Coming from a PK guild, The Curse, our names were on a kos list for a lot, and could easily and suddenly have 10 people zone in to hunt you down and kill (ha) you. But when I did, FINALLY get in some grind time.... this whole leg sucked, but I did it for the clicking! Screw your mass dispels!!! Hehe

I remember the first time someone gave me something in EQ. It was near the end of March of 99 and I was a completely green newb. When I say green newb I mean it, EQ was my first mmorpg. This warrior named Caisson heard me in chat asking people how to see at nigh (I was a lvl 3 human magician) and he sought me out and gave me a lightstone, a bunch of food and drink and 5 plat. I was floored. EQ is an unforgiving game and if you don't have night vision walking around pitch darkness in the eastern commons was nerve wracking. That person's act of kindness probably caused me not give up on EQ out of frustration and led to me now having 5 years of incredible memories from Everquest.
RIP Caisson (I joined his guild a week later and found out he was a senior veteran and had a terminal illness. The guild was actually founded by a group of vets that were friends in rl and gamed together).

3:08 that is known as a pathing exploit...it was something you could get banned for back in the SonyEQ days. There are certain areas you can stand in classic EQ where mobs will just walk around you or stop and stare blankly at you while you end them. There was one in lavastorm mountains, that dungeon there with the gnolls, you can go into a part where there is a lava pit and if you have levitation you can pull mobs there all day long and they will just stop in place and wait.
Bards could afk solo with a single damage AOE running. Because of how buggy bard songs can be generally they would pull a good portion of the dungeon.

    • @FirstNameLastName-okayyoutube
      @FirstNameLastName-okayyoutube 11 месяцев назад

@@IonBlaze1 yeah. 1999 memory storage of player data for ALL npcs and per character was silly thing to consider. zone timer, single encounter.. okay, but hundreds of thousands times that.. adds up. Now we have enough storage capacity with low budget. Can also encrypt things on client side.
If you change the encryption ( the key is almost no data in size and easy to manage ) the game can have the client switching between files and replacing them so no one can crack it.
There is ways for people to scan for encryption changes, but there is also ways to make it so that once the client side proposes the old encryption language.. tada cheater is caught.
Hard part is getting devs not to make a memory leak with a peice of redundancy.

I’m 45 right now and would like to follow a very similar check-list. Also, what are the best ways to farm a few thousand plat as a bard when you’re around level 50? Are hill giants a good option? What about ogre guards in oggok?

Im actually surprised you didnt try getting the bags when you were low lvl.
I think around lvl 12 or so I went to that spot in the forest to farm for the bag. Took me between 2 days (really more like 6 hours or so) to get enough for all my bag slots. Was good experience as well at that lvl.
I actually had crazy luck there.
First day I got 5 bags within a few hours. No one was camping it when I had showed luckily
Second day it was being camped. I tried getting on the wait list but the person gave it to someone else while I was wandering the zone killing other spiders. I also had really bad luck and kept dying to those same undead you spoke about. Died like 5 times lol. Then the other guy came back and took the camp again from the person he gave it to.
I decided to wait by the camp itself due to my frequent deaths and he finally gave up after "6 hours and no pop".
1 minute after he left the mob popped. And then it popped 2 more lol. After him and the other guy had tried camping for 6+ hours I got 3 back to back. I almost felt really bad for him but at the same time he'd told me to go and kill spiders in the other spots, which caused my multiple deaths, so I didn't feel too bad.

Quick story on p99 Blue with the Sarnak camp...... My first character was an Enchanter and when I was lvl 16ish (barely strong enough to farm the mobs around the Lake), I was determined to get the Goblin Gaz ring. My first trip out, I had no clue where the spawns were or how to get them but an extremely nice mage was camping the dual spawn for the Sarnak Courier. He helped me survive the other roaming mobs while I attempted to dodge and stay upright...... He got his ring shortly after I arrived and as he was about to head out, another Courier popped and he helped me kill it and allowed me to loot the ring. I paid him the 200 or so plat I had on me as a thank you and I never realized how insanely rare that ring was until I camped it much much later...... double spawn of Courier carrying the GGR..... absolutely wild and was such a nice interaction on the server that I'll never forget. These are the reasons why original EQ was so great, the game is the game but the risk taking stories for the piece of loot you need/want and the groups you are with make the game infinitely better than many of the games that come out today.

  • @TheAugustinian

Man, I was getting nostalgic until I saw the casters sitting down, and I remembered, "Yeah, that's what being a cleric was like. Sit, stand up when the tank gets to 30%, cast complete heal, sit down." The punishing XP loss. But it was still one of the best times I ever had playing a game, though I would never want to go back.
But man, isn't swarm kiting an adrenaline rush? I used to swarm kite my alt bard in Dulak's Harbor just so that I could sacrifice him for soul emeralds to sell or for the guild to use, it was such crazy fast xp compared to anything else you could do in the game.
