Another great Vid Rob....we struggle to get the stuff in our backwater of cape town. but the Virgin Oak is available . I think it punches well above its price point and has a lovely silky mouth feel...due no doubt to the slightly higher abv. Cheers
Very helpful video! I have been through a bottle of12yo and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now I have an unopened Bordeaux 10yo (46,3%), a Virgin Oak and a 18yo on the shelf and try to decide, which one to open first. After this video, I think I'll go with the 10yo, even if it's not the cask strength you were talking about. Cheers!
Thanks for the rundown Rob. I have only ever seen the 12 and V.O. here in BC. You guys are lucky to get such a vast range of their lineup in ON. All LCBO?
What happened to the shelf? I loved looking at those longrows ... lol. Did this happen a while ago and this is the first time I noticed .... that'd be hilarious if that's the case. I truly wish I could've bought the tobermory Marsala and the deanston palo cortado. They both sold out way too quickly!
Great overview of the whiskies Rob. Am wondering what your thoughts are on the Deanston 2002 Organic Oloroso Sherry Cask 16 year old? The LCBO just recently got a shipment of it and is selling for $200. Is it in your “good” category?
Enjoyed the Bordeaux. Heard good things about the Brandy cask and was contemplating picking one up, but your thoughts here are making me reconsider... I don't like when something just tastes too hot... had one or two bad bottles like that, sadly. Cheers, Rob!
Great vid, Rob! I, too, have been plagued by the "red pill", sometimes just have to embrace it! Sidenote, the Deanston 18yr that is the same bottle shape as the 2006/08 (not sure if it's the same as the one you reviewed), is great if you get the chance to try it.
Rob, I purchased the Deanston Organic oloroso and was very happy with it. I would like your opinion on that one. I thought it was far superior to the 20 year. I wondered at the time if it was just my palate. Finally, I can't thank you enough for putting me onto the 10yr PX. Found it under $70 here in the States and bought a few bottles. A GEM. Thanks for some great insights
I tried the Palo cortado in a bar in London and immediately went to find a bottle to bring back to the States. I found one bottle for 150 GBP and thought that was a great price. Great bottle! Pretty complex and beautiful . Been waiting for someone to review.
Rob, Great to see you talk about some not so good bottles. Agreed that the 2008, 9 year Bordeaux is VERY GOOD, just bought my third bottle and still under $75 US. Also enjoying the Dragon's Milk stout finished. Never was lucky enough to find the 10 year 10 PX. Cheers!!
The first time I had 20 year Oloroso, I had that sulphur note hit me and I was dead sure it had been a bad purchase. Two weeks later, it's still there...seriously regretting my decision now. Almost giving me a gagged feeling. Okay let's tuck that bottle and never look at it. Live and learn. Bring it out to serve to non discerning guests who only go by age statements/color and probably will mix it with soda or whatever (once a friend mixed my Longrow red pinot noir 11 with coke and I almost wanted to punch him). 6 months later, let's give it a try. Ohh this is much better than I remember, the note has died down quite a bit and honey and caramel fudge are at the front. Interesting. 1 year later, I am in love with this, what chameleon of a spirit. The sulphur note is very mild now and adding to the experience and I can't put this down. Must ration! 1.5 year down the line, it's one of the best single malts I've ever tried. Just kept smacking my lips after sipping it. I'll weep inside when it is gone. I've only felt that bereavement for a spirit with Hazelburn 14 Oloroso and Worthy Park 12 year estate release before. That hazelburn started nice but after a year of oxidation and my palate maturing, it was a dream. Worthy Park 12...well that would require an essay on my part. I started with a 63-65 for DO 20 year and I am at 92-93 on that now, maybe even higher. I'll grab as many as I can of the 20's. It's an exercise in patience, but by god it's truly an experience. The transformation is otherworldly. If you, like me have it tucked somewhere, try to visit it again. It may surprise you.
I wish I still had some deanston PX 10 Yr!! The Deanston Organic 14 (older bottle) and 15 year organic are great. I was just wondering if I should pull the trigger on some cask strength deanston. deanston 11 Year Old 2008 - Signatory Cask Strength 66.7% About 100 USD but then I gotta pay for shipping and the wait time is kinda brutal due to Covid 19 and on top of that I don't trust the US mail. Nice over view or rundown but I don't ever see these single cask deanstons. We get the core range and that is about it.
A big PS -- As were all shelling out for these bottles it is just as important to know what you might want to avoid along with the latest and greatest. I Appreciate the info
I can understand these bad scores whenever you get that very note that repulses you ! I had it in the cult Longrow 14 sherry matured and for the first time in my life i poured the rest of my glass down the sink...
Good honest reviews. I know many are afraid to give scores below 70 but I appreciate you aren’t afraid to do so.
I decided it’s time to take off the governor.
Really liked the Palo Cortado Cask
It’s good stuff.
Love the 2008 Bourdeaux cask, and the Virgin Oak is a great value IMHO.
True
Great run down. I think you helped me avoid a few potential pitfalls!
Another great Vid Rob....we struggle to get the stuff in our backwater of cape town. but the Virgin Oak is available . I think it punches well above its price point and has a lovely silky mouth feel...due no doubt to the slightly higher abv. Cheers
Ya the virgin is solid. Cheers Nick.

One of the few times we were this lucky.
‘The Good, The Bad And The Ammonia’😁Great rundown, Rob🙏😊🥃
Lol thanks buddy
Whisky In The 6 😊🙏
Just finished off my Deanston 10 PX last month. Was my first taste of PX in a whisky and one I wont forget. What a bottle.
It’s all dessert that whisky. Love it.

The shelf has only been like this for a couple weeks so your noticed fairly quick. The Palo cortado is still around closer to Toronto.
Great overview of the whiskies Rob. Am wondering what your thoughts are on the Deanston 2002 Organic Oloroso Sherry Cask 16 year old? The LCBO just recently got a shipment of it and is selling for $200. Is it in your “good” category?
I would like Robs opinion as well on that one. I've had it and really enjoyed it. $140 here in the States
I passed on the 16 organic for fear of the dreaded ammonia note. I hear it’s good though.
Enjoyed the Bordeaux. Heard good things about the Brandy cask and was contemplating picking one up, but your thoughts here are making me reconsider... I don't like when something just tastes too hot... had one or two bad bottles like that, sadly.

Ya it’s too bad because the nose is very nice without water.

I reviewed the older version

Glad I could help Tony.

Dragons milk stout finish sounds really cool.
Yeah thanks for the great review :)

Very informative Rob :) I have experienced to mixed success with Deanston as well, but weirdly to me it is the 18y I don't really like.
They are notoriously hit or miss. Cheers buddy.
I'm with you on the 10yr PX and the Bordeaux one. Both mind blowing. The ones after those have been good, but nothing special. Cheers Rob 🥃🇨🇦
Cheers Mark. Hope you’re doing well brother.
I've never experienced ammonia or sulphur. I hope it stays that way.
Ya... don’t ever take the red pill.

Sorry to hear that. Are you able to order from the UK?
Good to see you review some whiskies you don't enjoy as much as its easy to want to review your favorites.
Lol ya. I always feel a bit greasy giving a whisky a bad mark but something needed to be said about Deanston.
@@WhiskyInThe6 I agree. Its strange to me how the terrible sulfur doesn't bother some. Now you know it wasn't a cork issue with the 20, lol.
Ya exactly. Lots of people felt the same.
I agree

Good evening from Europe, to anyone that’s still up tonight, Slainthe :)
Sounds like the Tobermory 19 Marsala was the one to get from the bunch. Got talked out of it and grabbed the 1997 Palo Cortado. Oh well.
Jeremy and i split a bottle. Upon first go it seems to be the best of the bunch.
I'm going to give a thumbs up for the 674 edits I counted in this video (lol) Cheers
Lol
The beauty of filming with kids around.
@@WhiskyInThe6 I just happen to have some extra rope lying around!
though you saying Bordeaux for $43 is the buy?
I have never seen or heard of any of these expressions... I get the virgin oak, the 12, and the 18. That's all.
BC is not treating you well Quig.
@@WhiskyInThe6 I am definitely looking forward to retiring on the road and not being tied down to any one place...
I have the Deanston 12 and get a processed cheese note that puts me off.
I’ll need to revisit it. Only tried a small sample.
I can understand these bad scores whenever you get that very note that repulses you !
I had it in the cult Longrow 14 sherry matured and for the first time in my life i poured the rest of my glass down the sink...
It goes away in the bottle but you’re right. It is there a bit.
That paolo cortado better be good for that price
It’s definitely good
Just put the Brandy Cask and Sauternes in the post to me, I'll even pay the postage!
I’ve had really bad sulfur in a total wine house brand Sherry Scotch. Literally tasted like rotten eggs. Yuk. I don’t mind mild sulfur notes
Ya there’s some really scary ones out there. They shouldn’t be allowed to release those.
The only Deanston I can afford is Virgin Oak.
Deanston 20 Oloroso was huge letdown. Turned me off the distillery tbh.
I’m with you.
Sooooooo a 69 is bad???
🤣
Please get a mic for your videos. You have a lot of good videos but audio is sketchy
The newer ones I’m wearing a mic.
