They are spectacular, and for this reason they embody the craftsmanship of haute horlogerie. But the tourbillon and the carrousel were invented for other reasons. Their first role is to average out the impact of gravity on the movement's rate. Invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet at the end of the 17th century, the tourbillon makes the whole escapement revolve around its own axis. Created by Bahne Bonniksen in 1892, the carrousel follows the same principle but in a more secured way.

Good video. I predicted the comments section though. "OH MY GOD, WHY YOU IDIOTS SPEND $1000s ON CRAP MECHANICAL WHEN MY $5 QUARTZ KEEP BETTER TIME" ( I exaggerate for comic effect.) Are they trolls, or simply people who don't appreciate the reasons people will spend a fair amount of money of artistry and craftsmanship. No one will lust after that $5 quartz watch ever. Sure, one can always look at luxury, art and craftmanship as total waste of money. So is all the money spent on blood sports like American Football. And stupid reality TV shows. And really anything that doesn't feed you, keep you alive or propagate the species. Or maybe people just want a little piece of mechanical beauty in their lives. Some might grow a rose. Some might paint a lovely seascape. And some might make a beautiful watch. But I sense such thoughts are wasted on internet trolls :)

One of the reasons that tourbillons dominated the score of the International Chronometry Competition is that the testing method is based on the ISO 3159 norm (also used by the COSC) which tests watches in vertical positions, so the tourbillons gain a natural advantage.

So pleased to see you are showing BLANCPAIN as the text book example of a pioneering watch maker. I love this brand which is sadly so poorly marketed these days. BLANCPAIN is the oldest, e even older than V.C., watchmaker of the world.

What really interests me is how a man's mind in a particular nation evolves to come up with such inspirations and concepts that are not merely philosophical but are implemented and guaranteed to work accurately over many years. How come some nations produce such minds while others do not? It seems that the study of relations between noises in languages and other shapes and symbols in art, including the concepts of superstitions and religions, did well to organise a primitive mind to cause it to give attention not only to instincts, but to other observations using sensory organs as vision and audio. It is not easy to get a man's mind to observe and note the relation between entities, as in general a primitive mind sees the isolated entity before him but not the relations to other around it.
I wonder how many minds would make the grade to understand the mental steps needed to change from a stationary axis escapement wheel to one whose axis rotates around as in the tourbillon. It is these higher order thoughts and implementations that form a developed nation. It is such a pity that our schools do not touch on transferring such concepts to our children at an early age and many people in education completely miss out on making their minds process at such levels. In such situations one must not weigh the result through assessing the costs, nor the time used in creating such issues, but the foundations which will help to build the next stage and step which a developed mind need to climb to reach the next stage of mental development. I wonder how many people in a developed nation could have the potential to have a mind which accounts for all the explanations in this mechanical movement. There are nations which need hundred of years before some of its workforce will ever reach such processing powers. One does not reach such mental powers through being the proud owner by buying such technology, but by sitting down and looking at such a work of art, whose beauty exists in the relations that produce such harmonious motion. That in itself is the aim, and value of such masterpieces and one thanks destiny for being lucky to have lived in a nation whose diverse educations made us appreciate such a value in European HIstory. Thank you for such educational videos, which feed a man's mind with good elevations to higher levels. It is a sort of spiritual food that makes one feel that while man's instinct is important to follow, the human mind needs to value what other men are capable of conceiving!!

@@NeoHCgbz , Sir, let us look at how our comforts of life in and outside our homes came about and in what area of our world there were the fortunate conditions for the human mind to produce what it produced in any nation.
1. Since early humans appeared on earth, nine out ten of that duration Human hunted with primitive tangible tools. Animals did the same with their teeth and their claws.
2. About 10,000 BC the hunting tools became ploughs and in some nations, the agricultural revolution was built with tangible tools. Many other people stuck in social behaviour and prayed believed in superstitions. War was rampant.
3. About 1000BC the era of religion and war occupied many social professions without any one of them producing any home comforts for the family. Comfort was found in the afterlife when people die.
4. Art, Literature, musical, cultural, tradition, occupied people's mind to alienate them from the dirt, the sickness, the plagues human life had to fact. Art needed the engineering structure to support it. Logic rather than emotions started forming in the human mind.
5. The shipping industry and sailing ships were lost with crews and so Henry VIII required a navigation system to save people's lives. In that era 25,000 pounds were offered to the person who would solve the longitude and the latitude problem of navigation. Born in 1693 John Harrison made the first clock with the Grasshopper escapement being rather accurate. I consider that was the first application of the human mind to complex harmonious mechanical linkages. Many lives were saved in those seafaring nations.
6. The logic of the clock, with its rotating escapement and oscillating parts, helped to conceive the knowledge of the flywheel crankshaft and the piston where the steam engine about 1750 was developed in those are of the world which fortunately had all the required combinations of steel, coal, the experience of the logic of their past " machines". Diesel engines and Petrol engines followed.
7. In1800 the industrial revolution brought about the expansion of products that helped the families live a better life and these products went all over the world with all nations gaining from the industrial revolutions, though some people misused the products of the industrial revolution.
8. About 1900, flight, electronics, sea, air and land transport linked all nations.
9. About 1950, Communications, Jet engine, and the transistor brought about a world revolution where now all nations left their superstitions behind and all seek the tangible guaranteed comforts that technology brought about.
10. Other nations contributed in other manners, but the higher level, thinking in new logic which brought comforts to our children in this work, rather than the comforts of religions in the afterlife, can basically be identified as commencing to accelerate with the human mind putting together the harmonious different actions and processes and operations that were introduced in the clock with its diverse combinations.
Please mention in the order in which various nations contributed to produce the tangible comforts that most families in all nations enjoy today, and please weigh up the percentage of people at Universities which take up the LOGICAL AND RATIONAL tangible, guaranteed quantitative subjects rather than the EMOTIONAL AND SOCIAL , opinions, unguaranteed philosophies and the state of all those nations which did not go through the industrial revolution which started with watchmaking.
All nations have had their share wonderful inventions, the number zero which is the basis of all mathematics was formed in Ancient India by brown people. But Nazis like you tend have a myopic understanding of history which is called cultural hegemony which is described in details by Marxist scholar Antonio Gramsci.

I wish someone would make an affordable tourbillon in an understated 38mm case. Every one I've ever seen is as big as a clock. I know they require some real estate, but by now you'd think some watchmakers would have scaled them down. I don't like big-ass diamond-crusted watches that scream "look at me". I like small complex wrist watches that only I know how cool it is.

i was wondering, how do you train these days from early on to be a professional watch maker ? to work for Braguet, or Piquet, or Omega, whoever. Do you have a special high school and start very early or you get educated after high school ? What are prerequisites for becoming a watchmaker ? besides steady hands of course :)

well i think that a diploma in mechanical engineering is a must, and surely a lot of experience in autoCAD and watch rapair. and a background in art for those that work with engraving/ enameling/ painting and an extensive knowlege of jewelery. Only thing i have no idea is how does one apply for the job itself.
If you arent able to naturally grasp the geometry. Youll most likely just be a repairman. Which its expensive to get in to... but the geometry isnt that difficult to derive. Ive invented a few escapements. N had to teach myself all the way through it

Forgive my ignorance, but what are the small purple coloured "bearings" that are prevalent in fine watches made of exactly? Some sort of jewel?
K.C LeJeune exactly, synthetic ruby nowadays and natural grown ruby in very old pocket watches. The synthetic ones do have a rather dark color, natural ones are much brighter.
What this guy above me said. They provide very low friction and are indeed called 'jewels', because they used to be made out of real rubies before synthetic ones were invented.

Who and how made the parts?
Can someone explain? If the power (from the mainspring) is delivered to the cage (escapement) always at a constant angle, why does it matter if the escapement-cage rotates? The mainspring is upstream of escapement in power transduction, and there will always be a bias in the direction of mainspring's power delivery. Indeed, don't you have to rotate the mainspring to balance the claimed affects of gravity?
The effect of gravity is on the balance wheel.The balance wheel has a more consistent rate if in one position and perfectly balanced.When a wrist watch is moved through different positions with respect to gravity it’s rate will change because of frictional and momentum differences on its pivot jewels and other moving mechanisms in the watch.just watch a toy hanging from a cars rear view mirror when you change lanes.The toy will act like a pendulum and resist the change in direction of it’s steady state.It is hard to get a mechanical timepiece balanced for every position that it may be forced through .

Why would you need to stop the cage of a carrousel though? Also what's the point of having two or more tourbillons? I've seen one or two watches in your videos with 4 tourbillons, seems like overkill.

Nevertheless, it remains a sensitive mechanism and the challenge is now to conceive new versions that perform always better, as well as taking the time and investing to decorate their components in the best way.
+Pete Randy Medina Dude, might I remind you as to how DIFFICULT it is to assemble a tourbillon and carrousel? As "dinosaur" as the technology may be, these mechanisms are assembled BY HAND which is why they cost so much!
