    All hail the mighty PS2. There are so many reasons why it obliterated its competitors, and backwards compatibility was one of them.
    -Cheap (for the time) DVD Player? Check.
    -Can play practically every game from the wildly successful PS1? Check.
    -Access to a massive library, as well as the now priced-reduced massive library of the PS1? Check.
    -Cheap component cables at a time when TVs were starting to get component cables in North America? Check.
    Seriously. The PS2 was the perfect combination of features for the time it was released.

      Good point @medleysa Thank you for the comment. The only game I ever had trouble with on PS2 was a Simpsons wrestling game. I had trouble with analog controls but it might have been an issue with my copy.

      I remember being so underwhelmed by the PS2. The Dreamcast was the last none Nintendo console that truly had me excited back in 99. Such an amazing launch with Power Stone, Soul Calibur, House of the Dead 2 & Sonic Adventure. The PS2 fell flat on it's face by comparison. With it's regurgitated Dual shock controller, awful console design, most of it's launch titles were disappointing and the vast majority of it's library boasted drab washed out colours, as if colours were for kids or something, while pushing too many titles that aimed for realism and excess violence. It lacked the innovation, wow factor, the PS2 is when video games lost their smile imo.
      PS1 was incredible though. That console deserves all the praise it gets.

    Great video, one thing to note about the original model PlayStations with the RCA jacks is that they typically have more colour banding present than later models or any other compatible console. It's due to the GPU on these models, and is present on all connections. It's a rather different look, which you may or may not prefer.

      "But they never will, because money." This is exactly why I will never again buy another console. I bought Sony all the way to PS3 original fat console because of backwards compatibility. As soon as they reversed that during the life of PS3 I knew I would not be buying a PS4. PC games on the other hand... well I can play "almost" every single game I have ever bought on my current PC. The few that I can't play is simply because I don't wish to duel boot to an earlier OS, as there is no other work around, but overall I can play just about any one of my 1000+ collection dating back to the 80's when I first started gaming.

      "Just keep your old consoles hooked up alongside your new ones." Sorry but I would rather not keep an entire fucking wall of consoles hooked up, it looks like shit and I don't have room for it anyhow. I have been gaming since the Atari days and have had most of the major consoles up till now. Emulators have taken the place of the older stuff for me and there really is no excuse for them to not to include backwards compatibility in the newer consoles after proving that it can be done. Instead, they want to be greedy and try to resell me digital versions of games I already have bought and payed for. Fuck that noise, they will never get another dime from me.

    Guys, I first want to say great overview on all the systems. But you've missed probably the easiest way to get the PS1 rgb experience, and im surprised that you did not cover it as you mentioned all the pieces to make it happen.
    If you have the oldest model ps1, the one with built in RCA jacks, you can use a ps2 component cable on this systems multi-out for rgb, and then use and RCA cable on the composite line and use that for ext sync on PVMs or anything that needs the sync.
    Give it a shot.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  9 лет назад +53

      +GoodTofuFriday [Try4ce] Just tested it. Totally works! That's pretty wild. Wish we'd known, but this is the first we'd ever heard of it. Would've been a super cool thing to feature in the video. I had no idea that it would connect to the same pins as RGB. As we always try to emphasize, we don't know that much about what's going on inside the systems... that's why we get experts to help us fact check. We're all about presenting the results. This is a pretty neat fun fact, though!

    • @GoodTofuFriday
      @GoodTofuFriday 9 лет назад +8

      +My Life in Gaming Glad you find it cool! have to commend you guys on your videos. you take a lot of misinformation and make it easy to understand. Not an easy feat to do.
      If you've never heard of Sync on Green I think you should look up. A lot of more recent PVMs support sync on green, and with an extremely simple mod inside systems you can use just component cables, or custom rgb cables without the need for scart adapters. I personally find it makes more sense for NTSC territories.

    I just ran through all the options, from the RetroTINK 5x and OSSC to the Pound/Hyperkin cables. I completely forgot that the PS3 plays PS1 games! Never do it myself anymore after entering the world of external upscalers, so it slipped my mind.
    It's so easy to forget, most people don't want to spend much, and are just after the quickest, cheapest option. In many cases, the simplest solution is all that is necessary!

    PS1 games on emulator will run in HD resolution but every imperfection, blurry textures, and low poly objects will stand out 100x more. IMO a loss of graphical information with an imperfect CRT technology can actually make games look better. Textures blends together and there is smoother transition between colors and not gritty jagged lines dividing everything. Also many games on PS1 use sprites and 2D backgrounds like in dino crisis 2, and here ePSXe will just upscale everething, making it look blurry as hell.
    Below dino crisis 2 screenshot in much higer resolution compared to 320x240
    s1.postimg.org/6y9s3p599/Clipboard01.jpg
    Whole background looks blurry, and character model is separated from the background itself. On CRT and real PS1 (or PS2) the same scene looks perfectly sharp, and there''s no longer that feeling of character model and background separation.
    s18.postimg.org/7pw4b0fpl/image.jpg
    In 3D games (without 2D backgrounds) emulation is better, because unlike 2D backgrounds picture is sharp, but whole picture will lack this authentic look. I was surprised playing dino crisis 1 on ps2 and SD CRT tv for the first time, it looked sooooo muuuuch better, and imperfections were perfectly masked in that 320x240 resolution,
    s18.postimg.org/k38yhx5dz/image.jpg
    This is 320x240 screenshot. Low poly character model is no longer that noticeable, and on SD CRT TV it looks even better with scan lines, sharpness filters and much better colors. No wonder people 20 years ago were impressed looking at these games, because I'm enjoying looking at them even today (but only on SD CRT).

    • @PabloB888
      @PabloB888 4 года назад

      @David Hellewell I have tried all kinds of CRT shaders and especially 2D games looks better with them, however real CRT still makes a big difference. 320x240 is wayyy more sharp and clean on real CRT, and not to mention CRT TVs have superb picture quality making colorful details pop.

    Hey guys, I have a question you might be able to help with - I need PSP for speedrunning PS1 games, is component going to be my only option for 480i/240p? How do I get it hooked up to my PVM if the only colorspace available on my monitor is for RGBHV? I'm wondering if there is a way to convert a 240p YPbPr signal to a 240p RGBHV signal so I can pass it through to my Framemeister for capture.
    My composite input is broken and there is no component :(

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 лет назад

      +CarcinogenSDA [Coury] Unfortunately when it comes to the PSP, Component is going to be your only option for output. Which PVM do you have? I'm surprised that it doesn't have a YPbPr color space option.
      If there is definitely no YPbPr color space on it, then using a transcoder is probably your only option. I had one called the Keene Sync Blaster that could go both ways - transcode RGB to YPbPr and vice versa. If you could locate one of those, you could go in with component, out to SCART which can then go into a SCART to BNC into your PVM. Its sadly an overly complex work around to which should be a fairly simple process.
      Unfortunately, I no longer have the Keene Sync Blaster so I have no way to test that this would perfectly work the way I think it should. Heres a review that Videogame Perfection did on it www.videogameperfection.com/2014/07/09/syncblaster-black-review/
      Hope this helps!

    • @CarcinogenSDA
      @CarcinogenSDA 8 лет назад

      +My Life in Gaming hi Coury. It's a PVM 1910. It looks kinda old, but yeah, component isn't an option.
      Not sure about whether the RGB inputs convert to the correct color space.
      How well do transcoders do lag-wise? Lag is a big deal for me, which is why I went PVM instead of just working with D-Terminal and my Framemeister.

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 лет назад

      CarcinogenSDA As far as I know, lag shouldn't be an issue. I have and use a different RGB to YPbPr transcoder that comes from the passthrough on my PVM (BNC out to SCART male into transcoder) into my larger CRT. Both TVs are running side by side and I actually recorded them at 60fps with my camera to test for lag and both were frame accurate. Of course, this is a different unit than the Keene transcoder, but I'd hope that both function comparably. Especially since the Keene is a bit more epensive

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 лет назад

      CarcinogenSDA Actually, now looking at images of your PVM, it looks like it uses the CMPTR style input for RGB. This complicates things quite a bit more. So you'd need to go Component out of PSP into the Keene which converts to SCART which then goes into one of these www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/sony-pvm/sony-pvm-scart-converter
      Which then goes into your PVM.
      The thing is, I'm not even sure your PVM has an output that would be able to go the Framemeister. It has a sync output but I dont see another output.

      Also FFIX is coming out on Steam with upped resolution/graphics. Hopefully it will be in a playable state on release. I'll probably get it as I haven't played through that game in like 9 or so years.

    • @Sebastian-xy3xk
      @Sebastian-xy3xk 8 лет назад +5

      Both the PS2 and PS3 have not very good image clarity for PS2 video, I'm not sure what you should do I have wondered the same thing too. However if you chose to use the PS2 for playing games, RGB Scart does look better on it than Component does because the PS2 doesn't have the best Component video chips, when you use Component the video is a bit softer and there is some extra flickering you wouldn't get with RGB Scart. I don't want this to sound like I prefer one over the other in any way. For 480p however, the PS2 can output 480p over RGB Scart but not every monitor or upscaler can handle this. If you run into issues with this, Component should be used :3

    Something I found out just a few days ago, not every PS1 game will play on the PS3. Both of my copies of Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider 2 (original and GH) will not load past the opening title screen. My GH copy of Final Fantasy 9 will not load at all and my Original version of Star Ocean the Second Story also has issues running. None of these games have any issues at all running on my PSOne or my fat PS2. Obviously this isn't a problem for downloaded PSClassics but I don't intend to pay again for a game I've already paid for just to play it on a newer console, I'll stick to the old school for those games.

      +My Life in Gaming Yes, I think it would have been much more popular had Sony released it while the PSP was still relevant among the general gaming public. They barely even mention the "PSP Zoom" feature.
      It gives you perfect 16:9 full screen without the annoying pillar-box look.
      I'd love to see an episode on 3D gaming on newer consoles and the Playstation Display features, if you can locate one. I realize 3D gaming popularity is dwindling, but I still enjoy it from time to time. For me, the PS 3D Display + PS3 was the perfect gateway back into 3D gaming after not playing it since the SMS days.
      It also has a neat feature called SimulView where two people can see a different image on the same screen. Games such as Killzone 3, Gran Turismo 5, & MotorStorm Apocalypse support that.
      It's also a very nice looking unit, resembling a PS Vita screen. The quality is equally excellent.
      Games such as Super Stardust HD, Wipeout HD, Uncharted 3, Killzone 3, de Blob 2, Zen Pinball all look amazing in 3D. M2 even programmed in a special stereoscopic 3D mode for the PS3 version of Super Hang-On arcade (Sega Vintage Classics). I had my fingers crossed for Space Harrier to come to the PS3, but it never happened unfortunately. The 3DS became their new focus at that point.
      PS, I'm a big fan of your show. It's always top notch production and even though I've been a pretty hardcore gamer for nearly 35 years I still find myself learning something new while watching.

    Previously, I've been using official component cables on my PS2, but my Elgato won't accept the resolutions of PS1 games through component. I bought my old PS1 console out of retirement and got an RGB cable for it. I'm using the generic scaler. Most games played and upscaled fine, but a small of games caused the PS1 to switch from PAL to NTSC to PAL again just before a cutscene starts. This glitch didn't reoccur on the PlayStation 2, so for the problems PS1 games I played them on the PS1 outputting RGB. But it meant swapping between RGB SCART and component whenever I wanted to play PS1 or PS2 games. I've been looking for a SCART splitter so I can send RGB to my upscaler and component to my Elgato without swapping the cables, but I haven't yet found a splitter that doesn't degrade the picture quality.
    As an experiment, I did some PS2 capture tests with RGB SCART and component. To my surprise, RGB SCART on the PS2 seemed to hold up quite well against the official component cables and produced a brighter image.

      Just choose whatever is more convenient, both are very similar. Not very many PS2 games run at 480p so you don't miss out on much going the RGB route.

      Ramiro 1992 Most underrated. I hear way more people praising FFVII compared to Cross.

      TheNickle well overrated is praising a game more than it' deserves, so I would say both Chrono Cross and ff7 are overrated, just like current games like Overwatch

    I play PS1 disks on my PS2 through component, and it looks purrfect.
    PS3 emulation sucks, since it ruins Spyro 2.

      How does it ruin Spyro 2? You mean playing it on a 60gig right?

      PS3 emulation is one of the best imo. I like the smoother look compared to that of the ps2.

      @@bozny22 Spyro 2 has audio issues when playing on a PS3, primarily during cutscenes. It's an issue with emulation, since certain other emulators have the same problem with it.

      I think I can remember this but your comment might be making me create memories. Completed Spyro 2 100% on my 60gig. It is nitpicking to say that PS3 emulation sucks. It does not at all. In fact the 60gig is almost certainly the best console ever. Find my long comment and read it. You could be ridiculous and buy a NTSC US or JP original SCPH model 60gig as those have hardware Emotion Engine backwards compatibility. But then, buying all those PS1 and PS2 games in US or JP version is just ridiculous.
