    I wish this came out a month ago! I didn't realize that PSP games perfectly integer scaled to the Vita screen. Went back into the Adrenaline settings and found that you need to set it to original and turn smoothing off to get this sharp scaling (it's surprising that this combo works because when original scaling is selected it says the other graphics options don't apply).
    At least this video came out before I played more than an hour of FFIV with LCD3x scaling :)

  • @justanotheryoutubechannel
    @justanotheryoutubechannel 3 года назад +26

    It would be interesting to see someone modify this to output true 1080p, which would allow a 2x scale of PSVita games by cropping 4 pixels off, or to modify it to allow 1x scale without black borders.

    I always found the choice of a 960*544 screen interesting. By comparison, standard definition PAL content is 720*576 pixels in either interlaced or progressive, while NTSC content is 720*480. So the Vita's vertical resolution is between that of PAL and NTSC content.

      True story....My friend at the time, purchased a PS4 and at the time, they bundled the PSTV with the PS4. My friend didn't even know what it was, so i explained what it was and what he can do with it. He wasn't interested and said i could have it if i wanted it!
      I've had it ever since and always had 3.60 cfw on it, since it was available. The last time i messed with it, i installed enso cfw on it and on my PSvita. I haven't played with either since then.

    Another thing of note is you can get native res video out of *any* PS Vita over USB using the UDCD-UVC plugin by Xerpi: github.com/xerpi/vita-udcd-uvc
    It’s as straightforward to setup as Sharpscale is for a PSTV, and just shows up as a USB webcam in windows where you can add it to capture programs like OBS easily. No viewer software needed like a 3DS or PSP.

    There's also the Adrenaline plugin for the Vita, which allows you to play most if not all PSP games and homebrew. There's some video options in the menu, I found the sharpest option was "sharp bilenar without scanlines" which is basically a 2x integer scale. If you have Sharpscreen set on integer though, there's not really any difference between that and original mode. Also if you're running at 1080i with any scaling filters the framerate lowers to 30fps on all titles.
    Unfortunately Adrenaline adds a ton of input lag. Wish it would be improved but it hasn't been updated since last march. :/

    Still love watching you guys exploit the hell out of devices that get shunned by mainstream consumers. That thing is perfect for everything Sony retro wise. All those classic PSP and PS1 titles running near perfect in HD with such a small footprint is sweet. Add in the more modern Vita games and your set for hours of wasting time. Plus it can do movies and streaming (for a time it did) if you want to include that function.

    The PSTV, when I initially bought it back in 2015, was underwhelming and was thrown into a drawer. 5 years later, after the softmods were put in, vita memory card option removed in favor of USB memory, Adrenaline, and of course, the ability to force every Vita game to work with the system, has made it my go-to when I want to play any Sony portable platform. To me, it renders the original systems as just showpieces on stands.

    • @Max-ui7yf
      @Max-ui7yf 4 года назад

      I originally bought mine in 2016 because I needed a new PS3 controller, and the cheapest I could get one new was in a bundle with the PSTV for 39 bucks. I thought the PSTV would just be a bonus that I would toss aside, especially since I didn't have much interest in the Vita, so I didn't really do anything with it at the time. Fast forward a bit and I discover homebrew. Now I have the PSTV setup to play all of my PSP games plus a lot of my favorite PS1 games, as well as a couple of digital Vita games I bought. So yeah by far the best part of that deal was the PSTV, especially since the controller now has a faulty left stick that drifts lol.

  • @frog-girl-68000
    @frog-girl-68000 Год назад

    i am a fairly new vita owner but i have found sharpscale to be useful for playing PSP games through adrenaline on the handheld vita hardware as well!
    adrenaline's filtering modes add some noticeable input delay (although not as bad as the ppsspp emulator in my experience), while setting adrenaline's graphics filtering to "original" and turning off bilinear filtering in the official vita settings mitigates most of the delay. however, the latter gives inconsistent results, appearing to to return to the bilinear filter every time a game is launched and the home button is pressed, bringing up the "Do you want to quit the game?" menu. opening up the adrenaline settings menu or going into power save mode for a moment and back resets the display to your desired settings, but needs to be done every time a game is launched or the home button is pressed, which isn't a dealbreaker but has become tedious over time. hopefully, one day, the input delay issues in adrenaline will be addressed, but it's not looking likely as the last commit was nearly 3 years ago :(.
    setting sharpscale to either fitted or integer scaling with point filtering effectively looks the same as adrenaline's "sharp bilinear without scanlines" - consistently crispy, but without the added delay. i'm still not sure exactly how many milliseconds of delay are added with adrenaline and i do not have a PSP to test against. getting rid of that extra bit of delay makes timing sensitive games way more enjoyable, and i don't have to keep opening up the adrenaline settings every time the display reverts to bilinear and doesn't reflect the set preferences.

    Wondering if the third-party prices for PSTV might dip a little bit now that Persona 4 Golden is on Steam

      Hopefully, the Vita version of P4G dips just a tad. I didn't pick it up during the $20 used time and now CV has inflated the price three times that.

    I own the PS TV.... bought it when it finally became available in the U.S. I played a couple Vita games on it and it worked fine but I wanted it to stream my PS4 too it with the PS TV hooked too a monitor in a different room over the network....which did not work fine. Graphics and framerate was ok but the massive (controller) latency made that feature unusable. Also the biggest downside of the PS TV is that (for some reason) it doesn't support a ton of Vita games (there's a list out there of supported games online somewhere)...even though that was it's primary purpose. Long story short the thing was pretty worthless and It's been sitting in a box collecting dust for a loooong time. So I'm glad to see someone is actually doing something with it.

      I recently hacked mine with Henkaku Enso running on 3.60. I was having trouble with the SD2Vita but after 2 days of trying to figure out what I did wrong, I just re-worked the hack from begining to end and now have it running fine. I unblocked games from not playing so Its definitely great for running PS1 and PSP games with the PS3 or PS4 controller. If you can hack it or sell it as its rare.

    This is something I have been looking out for,for sometime.
    The last time I checked having a phat psp running on 1.5 CFW would let you stream games to your pc which would probably make for the best way to capture and play psp or psone games.
    I figured this video would be it's upgrade but it sure isn't it...
    Thanks for the extensive coverage anyway.

      Then what would you suggest instead? Clearly what MLiG is promoting isn't for everyone and is highly inconsistent as well.

    Thinking logically about the 1080i thing, surely if a bob-deinterlacing method is used, there would be no deinterlacing artefacts because it’s only 960x540 of actual Vita image.

    PSP still impresses me but the omission of a right analog was kind of a bummer. Reminded me of player FPS games on Dreamcast.

    For modded PSPs you can use a PC program called remotejoy which will display the psp on your HD monitor, and you can map the buttons to the keyboard. then use a program to convert the keyboard bindings to controller buttons if you want to use a ps3/ps4/xbox controller. I have been using my PSP this way since 2009 I'm not too sure if it interger upscales or not, but may be a good option for those with only a PSP-1000 (like me)

    How does this compare to the "sharp bilinear filter" mode in Adrenaline for PSP/PS1 games?

    • @sargesmash1
      @sargesmash1 4 года назад

      A little clearer, but I am noticing that line through the screen in various spots while playing Lunar: Silver Star Harmony. Will be looking forward to future releases for this plugin, though - very good stuff indeed.

    The PlayStation 3D Display has a proper PSP zoom mode and is probably the best way to play PSP discs on an external screen.

    This is also a big deal for those of us multisync PC CRT monitors. Especially if they unlock a 544p output mode, which PC CRT's will sync to no problem.
    I was already playing Vita TV games at 1080i (1088 if you count the overscanned pixels) to have the same lines-per field as a Vita, but the bilinear filter practically defeated the purpose. So integer scaling is a big deal. This is definitely going to encourage me to revisit the system.

    This video is so helpful! I was wondering what settings you recommend in Sharpscale for Dissidia?

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  2 года назад +3

      [Coury] For PSP games, I run scaling mode in "Integer" and scaling Algorithm in "Point." That should look nice if you have the official download on the system. If you're going to be booting it with Adrenaline, go into the Adrenaline settings and set Graphics Filtering to "Original", smooth graphics to "No" and set your screen scale X and Y for both PSP and PS1 to "1.000"

    Quick note - if you're using a USB device as your main memory card (i.e., usbmc), the Sharpscale config app seems to be buggy, and crash on startup.

    I don't make it very far into your videos before I hit the like button. And then as it plays I find myself going down to it again and again, noticing that I already hit it. There's so much good in them, and now I'm going to have to do this. I remember when I bought the PSTV, it was because I needed a ps3 controller, and buying a pstv pack with a controller and several games was actually cheaper. Sure the controller had lower build quality--but its battery didn't.
