I actually quite like these, but I've never heard them quite this audibly, I love this. Must go back on some day to have another listen.

Love this video ! I wish it sounded this good from the cab ! You don't really get the traction motor sound up front but we do get the great views ! I would usually pull away in power 3 and then into 4 at about 30-40 mph just to get a smooth build up of power. It's pretty hard to maintain exactly 110, slightly easier on the 387H with digital speedo 😉

Yes, they are wonderful, the 387s and electrostar "two" fleet have consistently more audiable motor sounds, than the first generation like the 375s, 357s, 377/1,2,3,4 and 5 etc, these were mediocre in sound quality, but the 387s are CRISP, even at High speeds!! In this video I was hoping the driver would hit notch 4 around maybe 5 mph so I could get the accurate fastest possible acceleration haha. But yeah they are pretty quick for such a heavy unit . Also I guess getting them to 110mph between the station are the issue. They seem to get to 110mph pretty quick, only 4 seconds between each mph after 100mph. That's pretty Consistent acceleration!! And I never knew the HX 387s had digital speedos, Interesting!!
.I assume your a driver then, another example of a driver who loves traction sounds!! I do sort of loath the aventras for being so quiet and boring. The sound requirements and regulations of a train does not seem to need to be that low , given that trains like the class 331,745, 755 and 385 have very audiable motors sounds and are newer than aventras by comparison and allowed to have audible sounds. trains like the s8 stock which are relitively new to older rolling stock, also have phenonimal motor sounds, im sure the staff at bombadier also appreciate the spectacular noise too , its a shame once again aventras are so boring by comparison, probably just a bi product of how the motors are made huh? Bombadier Europe have some lovely traction too!! The BR 1442 talent 2 train is an example, very similar to UK bombadier motors!

@@gapthemind--mindthegap8524 My favourite traction motors have to either be the ones on the 800s or the GEC Class 465s. The 800s sound best at 40 mph and the 465s best when departing the station.

This is likely one of the only videos thus far of a 387 going up to its max speed with a speedometer. Hope more train fans will do this in future . Hitting 60mph around 50 seconds in (despite driver resisting full power from the start.) And 100mph in just over 2 minutes. Not bad at all
Also , this is seemingly the only line 387s are allowed to go 110mph. East Coast mainline apparently doesn't allow it. Nor did the Midlands mainline. So enjoy

I think the only reason why 387s don't go faster than 100mph on the ECML is because 100mph is the top speed on the slow lines, and with 125mph being the tip speed on the fast lines, 110mph would be getting on the way if LNER and Lumo and the likes

I do hope newer trains have this level of motor audibility , class 331s and 745s are the only ones that do. The aventras are quiet and dull to listen to, the 387s arent even loud trains, but their audiable enough to have a comdy ride on and still enjoy the sounds. Otherwise the aventras are cool in other ways, I do prefer the flatter faced versions though

Yep, the beloved electrostars "OOMMMMMM" noise. Its to do with a frequency change in the traction control at those specific speed ranges. Likely to keep it running and carrying the motors consistantly to top speed, Not sure for the actual purpose.

      ruclips.net/video/VOm8ePMg1dE/видео.htmlsi=aUDmQHCfUm4n5fEH
      This video might help explain.
So the transistors have a max frequency they can switch on and off at, if they try to switch them faster, it will overheat and burn.
The goal is to create a rotating magnetic field around the motor, causing it to turn.
To do this, there are three electromagnets in the motor. They need to be 120° out of phase.
To increase the train/motor speed, the rotating magnetic field needs to speed up.
As the speed increases, the transistors need to switch faster. When the max frequency is met, the pattern the used by the controller is changed to one that has less switching, hence the audible frequency drops too, but then continues to increase as the motors speed increases.
