According to the B.C. government..."interpretive forest site" means a site and ancillary facilities developed by the minister to interpret, demonstrate or facilitate the discussion of forest resources or their management; "recreation site" means a site and ancillary facilities developed by the minister for recreation or to protect a recreation resource
I haven't gone up this road in a few years...good reminder to perhaps do that this summer. And for anyone who hasn't done this drive before, definitely stop in the village of Horseshoe Bay that was shown at the beginning. Really scenic little area and there's great fish and chips.
Porteau Cove hosts probably one of the best dark sky locations within arm's reach of Vancouver, stopping by on your way back to stargaze promises incredible views of the Milky Way. My wife and I love that place, we did our engagement shoot there.
Now on my bucket list. I rode my bike in BC during days of heavy rain years back and it was not the most enjoyable, and rode on home. Now as an old man I'm going to take a convertible up there some day. Thanks for showing this spot of heaven!
This is my favorite hwy. In the early 80"s I would do Vancouver to Squamish on my 1971 Yamaha xs 650 motorcycle. It is by far the most awesome stretch of road. That was back before the new hwy. Lots of great memories here!
I have done the drive from north Van in 2006. And my top thing on my bucket list was to move to BC. In June of 2020 i finaly moved to the Sunshine Coast from Ontario. And don't ever want to go back.
You've hit another one out of the park, Mike. You really seem to have honed your craft with the local videos you've been doing during the pandemic. Looking forward to seeing your content once you're able to travel again.
I was on this highway in 2005 before the Winter Olympics. The construction began to make it better to get to Whistler. Back then it was a mess. It looks spectacular now.
Did you forget to put the link for the "tour guide" in the description? We feel alive in the forest in a way you can't in the city, and nowhere has better forests than B.C.
I've traveled the sea to sky every year til 2018.Looking forward to doing it again.Eco-Strips have replaced our bulky jugs of detergent and do a great job of cleaning our dirty farm clothes.
Sewell's Marina in Horseshoe Bay is also a cool spot where you can rent a boat for the day, and go explore all the little islands, as well as check out the seals on Pam rocks! If you haven't done it, I'd definitely recommend it for a future video.
Really enjoyed this video as it is one of the few BC highways that I haven't been on. Point of interest on the Sea 2 Sky highway. Back in the seventies we made friends with a man who had previously owned the property known as Brandywine Falls Provincial Park on the road to Whistler. He and his family had run it as a campground but got tired of the 24 hour workdays and sold the property to the province for $1 on the understanding it would be open to the public. The province held true to their promise and it is now a provincial park. The man, who's name was Ray Gallager, and who actually named his daughter Brandy after the Falls, moved to the Crofton area on Vancouver Island where he had a beautiful farm with an Arbutus tree forest on the Georgia Straight and fields for pigs, sheep, geese, and bees and an immense garden surrounded by blackberry bushes. True to form, Ray got tired of the work involved and made arrangements with the government one more time to convert it to a park. But this time he had a special request. He asked if he could keep a small piece of the property and move the big beautiful house onto it. They agreed. Today, Osbourne Bay Park is there for everyone's use and as you enter the park if you look left, you can see the beautiful old house peeking through the trees. Fond memories.
It is a nice drive also to return to Vancouver via the Duthie Lake Road and through the Fraser Canyon. Be sure to stop at the Orthelo tunnels near Hope.
OMG the I remember the first time I saw this back in 2010 and I immediately fell in love with it! In 2018 I drove from Whistler back to Vancouver and stopped at so many spots! The view is absolutely amazing! Thx Mike ❤️
Just a note that Hwy 1 doesn’t end at Horsehoe Bay. It continues via water crossing to Departure Bay then continues south through Nanaimo terminating at the Mile Zero marker at Dallas Road in Victoria. PS Love watching your videos
Week after week you entertain and educate. A beautiful journey today--and I love the idea of checking out the things that you normally just drive by. Thank you so much for sharing all of this. I love it. (Oh, yeah, and your hair is great!)
It's one of my absolute favourite kind of days. You never know what you'll come across. The only way it's any better is when you can do it with a friend.
i did this drive on my cross country trip last year on the KLR. i ended up having to rebuild my clutch at the campsite right near Shannon falls. this is my favorite road ever.
I have always wanted to drive this hwy., and visit Squamish. I am one of those who loves to stop and see all the out of the way places too...I am usually alone in that one. 😑 Maybe one of these days. Thanks for sharing, just beautiful.
Nice to see you out and about without a mask. For the most part anyway. Back in 2004 I was on the return leg of a solo motorcycles trip from Worcester, Ma to Alaska. I came down the height of BC on Rte37 to Kitwanga then 16 to Prince George, where I stayed one night . After that, I went south on 97 and almost came down 99 to Vancouver, but I has plans to stay in Cache Creek, which is just south of the intersection of 99 and 97. It looks like I should have come down 99. I crossed into the states south of Abbottsford, at Sumas, WA. It was an awesome trip, and have wanted to go back ever since.
SATISFY your curiosity! And note that with all the water up that way, it's a matter of which is the least icy, not most warm. Recommended: Browning Lake, a sliver of deep water not far past Britannia Beach. It develops a top layer of reasonably swimmable water, but turns cold about 5 or 6 feet down!
I used to drive buses on that route for years. Before, during and after the construction. The worst was during the winter while they were expanding it for the Olympics. Now it is much easier to drive.
You guys on the west coast are so lucky to have access to this level of natural beauty. I've also been taking the opportunity to look up more local spots in and around Toronto, and expand on places i knew about already.
If everything goes well and Canada is open, that will be next years summer trip. Starting from Wisconsin. Thankyou for endorsing the laundry soap. I wanted to try it and now I will I need to watch your video again, once just wasn't enough! 🤗
Another great video Mike! I am impressed you didn’t scream when you dove into the water! I know how cold it is. My friends and I used to ride up to Brohm lake to go swimming in the 70’s when it wasn’t very well known. I almost got killed twice on the highway, one time the guy who just missed me lost control and went over the cliff. That was the scariest.
I remember in 2018 ago I went on a family holiday to Canada where we were meant to fly out to Castlegar (apologies for spelling) in the mountains, but that got cancelled as there were 500 wildfires burning so we ended up "stranded" in Vancouver before heading over tk Vancouver island. A couple of my brothers and I went to Shannon falls and did the sea to summit hike up to the gondola station before getting the gondola back down again and the climb offered some of the most incredible scenery I've ever seen, despite the smoke that was still in the air
Back in 2019, November I visited Vancouver. One of my friend took me to Horseshoe Bay. It's a nice place. Then we went to Whitecliff Park and finally Cypress Mountain.
Thanks for showing me some of what I missed the beginning of May when I did the road all the way to Lillooet. Everything was in lockdown at that point but the views were spectacular! Loved it!
I'm a Canadian RN who left Canada 26 years ago to pursue my career in emergency nursing in the USA. Your videos are so awesome I've decided to move to BC and enjoy the mountains in my home country. Whilst living here in Arizona I've become an avid mountain climber so I think Squamish might just be the perfect destination for me. I may do a travel nursing assignment there, but who knows, I might never leave!
Hey, Mike. Great to see you having a great time on your bike and sharing this amazing trip with us. Makes up for not being able to travel far this weekend. Yes, taking the time to check out the sights and enjoy a snack along the way is truly the way to relax and enjoy the beautiful day you had on this occasion. It was great to see the current status of all the viewpoints you showed and I particularly enjoyed your sequence of walking through the forest to the waterfall. Back when you were just a mischievous little tacker and I was on my first visit to Canada, my good friend Kevin took me on a railfanning trip along the old Highway 99 to Pemberton and the back road as far as Birken. Porteau Cove was THE spot to photograph the Royal Hudson 2860 beside Howe Sound on its afternoon return to North Vancouver (Britannia Beach was also a great spot). At the time I was still an active motorcyclist at home (Honda 750/4 - 1977 model) and commented to Kevin that I could really see myself fanging around the corners on this road. I had to chuckle when you showed us the highway patrol having a friendly chat to some poor sap he pulled over. Oh, by the way, I did get to go on a day return excursion from North Vancouver to Squamish behind the Royal Hudson on that visit. It's a shame that it's no longer active, but at least, it's preserved at the Rail Museum in Squamish. Also, on my second visit in 1995, I arranged to travel all the way on BC Rail to Prince George on the Cariboo Dayliner Rail Diesel Car train. Hope I haven't made you too jealous. Thanks again for a great video and I'm sure all your other Melbourne followers are enjoying this one too. Looking forward to your feedback to this comment and next week's video. Stay safe and well. Cheers from Michael.
The way you sell British Columbia is amazing ! I felt in love with that province years ago thanks to CTV New at 6 (you think it's depressive ? You don't know french news) Pamela Martin and Bill Good were on, a couple in its 50s with two kids (Tamara Taggart and Perry Solkowski). They used to smile and laugh, had funny stories and the forecast girl was halftime outside in public and Perry was always looking for new talents. That was quiet a change from what I used to see. Today, well, with your dynamism and good mood, you are slowly taking over.
I love alpha lake park! I haven't been in a while due to covid, but anytime I go to whistler, I stay in the creekside area and go to that park and picnic. I want to go now!
Great video. You are right it's a magical place. I drove it, and enjoyed every moment. Then went on the bobsleigh, all in my 60's and on my own, after being on the Rocky Mountaineer. Then I went on a Zodiac trip on the water right up to Brittiana mine, and did the trip down the mine. The waterfalls were amazing, saw a snake on the way up.
Glad to hear that the Candians use the term greasy spoon as well. I'm from the UK. I don't think they would serve you a full English with bacon fried egg + bread black pudding and baked beans.
No. Way. We are literally heading to Whistler next Friday!! I had planned to stop at the mining museum, because I love that place, but now I have so much more to see and do! It's like you make this video just for us! I've been diving in Porteau Cove in the past. Magical experience.
Thanks Mike for taking us up there! Visited Whistler many moons ago on a bus trip with my folks...and remember the old Sea to Sky highway as the other one wasn't even under construction! Isn't there one cove on the old road where you can see an old ship, rusting away? Any way this was a fun trip so thank you....
Wow seeing Horseshoe Bay & all the other great sites makes me homesick 😁 hopefully soon…will be able to come back for a visit…thx Mike for another great video 👍
Another great video Michael!! It is always a fun surprise to see what interesting Canadian content you come up with each week while you are still in lockdown.
One of your warmest videos yet. Ah, the (-) ions creating the most (+) experience, at least as we 'interpret' it. Not 'cheesy' at all. What A Forest. Thanks MIKE!
Mike, What a beautiful drive. I like to see new things and learn something I don't know - I think of it as feeding my curiosity. Never lose it. It'll keep you young your whole life long and so many places, etc, that are just waiting out there for you to soak up.
Believe it or not you can get sick of that drive. I used to take product up to our store every week for two years. My fastest time was 1 hour from Coquitlam to Whistler, (middle of the night and radar detector). Oh, and it can be tricky in the winter with fresh snow and somebody who doesn't know how to drive in it, (like most Vancouverites). Don't mean to be negative, it really is a fantastic drive, especially on a motorcycle.
Fantastic video! I have been on the Sea to Sky highway about a thousand times now, and it always takes my breath away. By the way, in answer to your question, you might say "to satisfy or to appease or to indulge your curiosity. 😎
“Should I get a hot dog or a burger?” Uh neither! Everyone goes there for the fish and chips which it’s famous for. I can’t believe you didn’t mention that. 🙂
Thank you for this it was exciting to watch. I have been all across Canada and BC is my favourite backyard for camping! I ‘m commenting on your stumbling block for amazing descriptive words and offer this ... “As exploration opportunities come up I accept the challenge as you’ll never know what you’ll find” I wish you all the best in Your travels and thanks for sharing!
The only time I've been to Canada was for 5 days in Vancouver. I drove to Whistler on that highway and it was beautiful. Got an A&W root beer in Squamish, half way there. TALL mountains !!
Hi Mike, good you were able to get a bit of distance away. I was thinking that I had taken this road in the 80s. Definitely before the Olympics. But when I looked at the map, I took Canada 1 from Banff to Kamloops to Vancouver. I did not go to Whistler. I do remember it to have been mostly a 2 lane roads with curves, bluffs, overlooks and mountains. Thanks for another great video.
Portrait cove is a great place to camp. If you can get a site. Been there a few times. Alice lake has lots of camping, turn off between Squamish and Whistler.
That really is a scenic highway - snow capped mountains, ocean, forest and lakes - what more could one ask for? How about a nice town along the way to stop for lunch. Really great journey, though I expected signs in the interpretive forest. Satisfy curiosity?
I feel you left some of the awesome views out. You had no choice. You would not have made it Whistler before dark. Every time I do that drive I can’t believe how lucky I am to have this scenic view.
Interestingly, BC has retained the numbering of the US highway network prior to the development of the Interstate system. BC Hwy 99 begins at what was the northern termination point of US 99 (now Interstate 5) at Peace Arch border crossing at Blaine WA/ Surrey BC and currently terminates at Hwy 97 just north of Cache Creek. Similarly, US 97, US 95 and US 93 all terminating at the US/Canada border, continue north with their numeric designation as BC 97, BC 95 and BC 93 respectively. In keeping with this system, the stretch of highway along the Sunshine Coast is designated BC 101... although there never was a physical connection with US 101.
Ive been as far as squamish , and have yet to make it to Whistler. Theres so much to see and do . Love the video Michael. As always you've knocked it out of the park . Keep up the awesome job

Sounds like communism

If you stop off at Troller Pub, you won't get much more riding done.😁
Porteau Cove hosts probably one of the best dark sky locations within arm's reach of Vancouver, stopping by on your way back to stargaze promises incredible views of the Milky Way. My wife and I love that place, we did our engagement shoot there.
9:04 I don’t know why but that lake view gives a sense of tranquility, thanks Mike!
Love waking up to coffee and the beauty of BC.
I couldn't agree with you more... 😄
Now on my bucket list. I rode my bike in BC during days of heavy rain years back and it was not the most enjoyable, and rode on home. Now as an old man I'm going to take a convertible up there some day. Thanks for showing this spot of heaven!
This is my absolute dream ride to do on my finished electric motorcycle. The sea to sky is easily my top 3 favourite of all time.
It's really really over rated. This is not the most scenic place by far!
@@patcheezy1985 nice.
Blake, so where should we be riding then? Spill the beans!
That is beautiful. I gotta go on that highway when I visit BC,

Highway 1 technically continues from Horseshoe Bay via the ferry to Vancouver Island from Nanaimo to Victoria.
Came here to say the same thing. The Horseshoe Bay Nanaimo ferry is part of the Trans Canada.
Yep. So says the mile 0 sign in Victoria
There's the real Mile 0 sign in Tofino, only the locals know that.
Just went to Squamish and Shannon Falls for my anniversary. OMG, scenic does not begin to describe that highway.
Constantly impressed at how much quality tourism content you manage to cram into this wee corner of the province.
Saturday is my new favorite day because of your videos.... Im so happy!!!

The most scenic Highway in Canada is the Icefields Parkway. I have been to 99 and Icefields.
The Icefields Parkway is a beautiful drive
Most definitely

I’m a sucker for a good scenic highway and wandering about. Loved this video. Well done.

@@DownieLive I absolutely agree.

All that you have shown us on this channel makes me want to move back to Vancouver.

I miss BC. Thanks for the memories!

And then I get the notification for his videos

A wonderful look at the Canadian mountains and falls.

I’ve never driven the Sea to Sky hi-way but it looks beautiful. That water fall is my favorite part.
It is like driving thru a fjord in Norway, and has been used as a backdrop in several movies.

Mike: should I get a hotdog or a burger?

exactly, when you have to ask that question, its 1 of each every time

Ahhhh thanks Ron! The restrictions are starting to ease, so hopefully I can start travelling again, and maybe even ride a train or two again? 😉
Mike, Yet another good adventure. Thanks for taking me with you.
One of your warmest videos yet. Ah, the (-) ions creating the most (+) experience, at least as we 'interpret' it. Not 'cheesy' at all. What A Forest. Thanks MIKE!
Amazing ride and dazzling landscape and phenomenal dive ❤❤❤💪💪💪💪
Mike, What a beautiful drive. I like to see new things and learn something I don't know - I think of it as feeding my curiosity. Never lose it. It'll keep you young your whole life long and so many places, etc, that are just waiting out there for you to soak up.
Thanks 👍
“Should I get a hot dog or a burger?”
Uh neither! Everyone goes there for the fish and chips which it’s famous for. I can’t believe you didn’t mention that. 🙂
Its not that important
Brandywine Falls is also incredibly beautiful! I love this drive up to Whistler so much
The 2 Sea Sky Highway... Mike, you are my inspiration...💖
Sounds great!
I'm already a TruEarth convert, and it's terrific!
Right?!!! Such a good choice!

Every time I do that drive I can’t believe how lucky I am to have this scenic view.
maybe, but the top scenic highway on the eastern side is Cabot trail, where the Atlantic meets rock and cliffs and incredible blue sky
Excellent video. Looking forward to the borders being reopened but will miss Canadian content from videos across Canada.
AKA The Squeamish Highway, for when the bridges used to regularly wash out and cars would drive off into the cliffs.
Incredible scenery, great commentary. You definitely make us want to be there, Mike!
You should!
Great Video Mike. Been to the Hgw 99 several times and you made me feel to come back again very soon to check out the spots along the way. Thanks man.
Ive been as far as squamish , and have yet to make it to Whistler. Theres so much to see and do .
Love the video Michael.
As always you've knocked it out of the park .
Keep up the awesome job
