Cool stuff. I'm no animator but it's really cool seeing how it goes from concept to sketches to smooth frame by frame changes like you did. I wish I was this talented
That’s the best advice I’ve had in 37 years, that bit in the first few minutes about envisioning it differently. What a wonderful teacher. Thank you sir!
Just to give extra endorsement and validation to this process shown in this video, it's essentially the exact same process I studied at Animation Mentor, which is considered the top-rated school in the industry. At AM we worked in 3D, but the method is the same. Well-taught and well-spoken! Thanks for sharing!
There are really few videos on yt that really explain the whole process while showing it from scratch. This is amazing, thank you for sharing these infos for free
I love the way you draw in general. The extra lines on things really make your animations look so much cooler and kind of make me think it's like your trademark.
This is really good and is something i wish youtube animators do more of, just animate something (don't even have to talk) and just learn through watching.
I find this tutorial to be invaluable; it's definitely motivated me to start animating. My only question is: if you do another part to this video, would you mind showing how you sync music with the animation please?
Wow this was great and very useful! Very easy to follow and you didn't run on and on about certain things, which tends to make me lose interest. You however kept me watching the entire duration of the video. I'd love to see how you clean up and color your work as well! And if you're up to it, I'd truly enjoy seeing a basic toon boom tutorial as well. I've seen lots of flash tutorials, but not many toon boom ones that hold my attention. Was nice to see Dovahbear again !! Thnx!
Thanks, I could do some Toon Boom tutorials when I feel more comfortable with the software. I found Adam Phillips tutorials on Toom Boom helpful. You should check them out! His username is 'chluaid'
I like how you work. I have to check your other videos. I used to work only on paper and then did some work in ToonBoom before retiring from the field. I can tell you have professional experience.
Bowz, I am a huge fan of all of your work and it was fascinating watching you create a simple animation so effortlessly. I would love to take a class with you, and I did follow your link. Sadly, that's out of a college kid's price range especially since I am not even studying animation. But I do wish to support you and your endeavors in the realms of 2D and 3D animation. For future videos, I would love to see more about the software you mentioned at the end. The four separate layers sounds interesting, and I would love to see this roughed out piece take some steps forward. Again, thanks for putting this up, Mr. Bowers. You are very talented!
CGtarian is geared towards students studying animation, and want to make a career out of it. I may make more videos like this one though, thanks for letting me know what you want to see. I am interested in knowing what everyone would like in another tutorial.
So this looks like the "rough draft stage". Could you do a tutorial on polishing it all up? I know there would definitely be other tutorials on this.....But I like you.
nice....Just stumbled across this little 'old' video and its been a real eye opener on the 2d animation workflow you use. I'm only just starting to try and improve my drawings so that I can attempt to create some small animations after a life time of watching anything and everything animated.. :) just checked out your Dovahbear 3-parter and lolz great stuff man. funny and inspirational. really makes me want to do something.... might have to start with a ball and progress to a bag at somepoint . cheers for sharing.
Bowz hi bowz i enjoy your animations, i want to know if a cintiq tablet with a screen like yours is MUCH better than using a pen tablet that has no screen so you have to look at your computer moniter as you draw, or if its the same
SecretAccount I'd suggest starting out with a screenless tablet, since those are generally much cheaper and let you get acquainted with digital stuff efficiently enough. Gonzossm uses an Intuos Pen & Touch Medium, and most of the big-name animators online today started out with lil' Wacom Bamboos (which have since been replaced by the Intuos line of tablets.) But yeah. Cintiqs are incredibly expensive but incredibly neat. If you've got $1000+ burning a hole in your pocket, feel free to throw money at wacom. If you want to get into animation though, I'd suggest you distribute your budget more evenly - like purchasing an intuos, an adobe flash license or toonboom or tvpaint, a decent mic, and record audio in a room with little echo/background noise. All's ya' need are the essentials and the willingness to learn and accept the fact that MISTAKES HELP YOU GET BETTER D:!!!
SecretAccount Yeah I've used both, and after using the Cintiq, I never used a tablet again. There is something about drawing on the screen that makes it better for me... and +1 to what Mossler said. Start cheap and work your way to the expensive stuff.
Wow! Thank you so much for sharing! It's one thing to read about animation principles, but seeing them applied really drives them home and makes them more tangible. Just the technique of selecting, skewing, and stretching the keyframes to refine the motion was an awakening. I've subscribed and hope you can find time to share more tips with us. Cheers.
That's great! I'm glad it was useful, I'm considering making more tutorials but there's a lot on my plate right now. I'm paying attention to what people would like to see next.
That's a great workflow. It doesn't mean you're cheating just because you're using technology on your favor. hahaha I'd like to see some Toon Boon tutorials from you, for sure.
I think it would be quite helpfull to see your settings of the brush and pencil. My brush is totally "wrong". Sometimes giant stripes and then no stripe. By any mistakes, punsh my englishteacher. I'm german^^
Bowz how do you draw the rough sketches ? When I look at the brush point it looks like you draw lines quickly and then you move away the pen, and then you draw other quick lines and so on... It looks really cool and I need to know how you really do it :(
I like how you do your animation and do your rough lines im still trying to come up with or find with a style that i could use that would easiest for me to animate ive spent like8 years now doing animation and ive never really found a style to use so it different every time..
It took me a very long time to learn how to animate decent in 3D, I'm still learning new things. There is a technical side, and artistic side, and a performance side to animation, and they all overlap. It's a lot to learn.
Bowz thanks for replying back. Yeah animation is difficult but i love doing it and it fun i also like doing voices and thas the career i want to go into so i have alot to learn haha.
One Question: Do you have a libary with poses of for example the bear where he's running, jumping, flying etc. So you just take these frames and scale / stretch them as much as you like to save time... If you don't, you could maybe consider this as a posibility to save your time :D
I've never considered using libraries of animation. So far my needs have been different enough, it's worth reanimating a walk etc. Between videos the look of my characters change too, so a reuse could be weird. My work is too sloppy for a library :D
dionisiogdrb there are different kinds of libaries. You have to get a feel for that :D I for example am a 3d artist, and I made myself alot of makros which I can just use to create new models and which have variables I just have to change to get my models as fast as possible.... Another way would be libaries of just drawings or models which you can always put together in some way, It's to make things easier.
Cool, unfortunately cant get something like Toon Boom/Anime Studio or Flash. To animate, and have to use PS. But animation isnt something that can easily be taught, you have to be able to do it yourself. But it is interesting to see your way of operating.
The best way to learn is to just do it, and have someone who is experienced give you feedback. It always helps to see how different people approach it, sometimes you learn a method that can be incorporated into your own workflow. That's how I learned :)
USEFUL.

meow
holy crap its Domics
Domics...:):o wow
What program do you use to animate?
this is amazing
itsAlexClark omfg !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wut up!!!!

Woah i didn't know he worked on Tangled, when you see his demo reels you understand why he says this is lazy animation. Amazing job Mr. Bowz
"Did I just say that?" -Bowz 2014
3 years later and it still gets me every time.
Definitely want to see you do some colouring and clean-up.
I second that!
I third that!
I fourth that!
*****
Bro, you just replied to a almost year old comment. *Applause*
***** This man has no limits!
Cool stuff. I'm no animator but it's really cool seeing how it goes from concept to sketches to smooth frame by frame changes like you did. I wish I was this talented
I love watching other animators work to see their style and preferences, keep up the sexy work
That’s the best advice I’ve had in 37 years, that bit in the first few minutes about envisioning it differently. What a wonderful teacher. Thank you sir!

I would love a little series out of this showing up until the animation is completely finished. Keep up the good work.
I love the way you draw in general. The extra lines on things really make your animations look so much cooler and kind of make me think it's like your trademark.
This is a really helpful tutorial, I've just got into cartoons and animation and this video really helped me with poses, thanks bowz
OOOHHHH YEESSSSS someone who can explain the process without skipping all the meat. Thanks Bowzzzzzzzzz
"assuming they don't have high expectations of what your doing" made me laugh.
Thanks Bowz, I was feeling bored of what I was animating but this inspired me to keep going. :D
This is really good and is something i wish youtube animators do more of, just animate something (don't even have to talk) and just learn through watching.
This is INCREDIBLY helpful! I really appreciate you sharing these tips!
I know its been 3 years, but your advice is still a god send! It still motivates me to continue working on Flash! So, Thank you!!
Love the flower sack dovahbear, keep up the good work!
This is fantastic. I hope to be able to animate as well as this some day. My studies are slowly making me better as time goes on.
Such an awesome tutorial. It's fun to see it come together. I'm going to give this a go
Kayla Velten humungous wot?
This blew my mind. Your very talented!
This was helpful, thanks.
Awesome vid man! Would love to see more!
Yesssss.... Thank you...
This thinking process is wonderful 😎👍🏻

A NEW DOVAH BEAR YES PLZ PLZ !!!!!!!!
I would love to see a Toon Boom tutorial by you. Most of the tutorial are made by non-animators sadly.
I love the rough step by step loosely sketch animation more please I try to learn and cannot afford a big class

What stuff do you use to animate? I mean like the tablety drawing things...
Cintq 21UX is my tablety thing
Bowz Thank you for answering my question about your tablety thing.

Very helpful Bowz, I really like your animations, keep being awesome my friend.

PLEASE MORE! I'm newish to flash and would love to know more... like how to add the colour and detail etc...
just great.
thank you for sharing!
What program did you use for animating and drowing?
Using the flour-shack shape for anatomy, - never thought of that one before.
Very insightful, thanks a bunch.
Thanks. Was enjoyable to watch.
When you were talking about layers, you described the under, line, and color layers, but what's in an over layer?
i want more tutorial like this...basic animation tutorial
Fantastic tutorial, man!
Any chance you'd be considering a tutorial of sorts with ToonBoom in the future?
That's a great workflow.
It doesn't mean you're cheating just because you're using technology on your favor. hahaha
I'd like to see some Toon Boon tutorials from you, for sure.
so sayeth professor bowz
Dude this is great, Thanks for the video!!
So it would be the same thing even if you had multiple layers of rough drawings?

You should make one on lip syncing. One without using Keyframe Caddy. :)
Awesome
This was great! I really enjoyed listening to you and it helped me a lot :D
Bowz how do you draw the rough sketches ? When I look at the brush point it looks like you draw lines quickly and then you move away the pen, and then you draw other quick lines and so on... It looks really cool and I need to know how you really do it :(
Wow sominocs and Alex Clark comment on this video pretty cool
And are you drawing the backrounds with Flash or do you import the pictures from Photoshop or something else?
I would like to borrow your talent . . . Forever.
Thank you 😀😀😀😀
