This was a cake of my childhood! Long before in front of many schools, especially in D5, easy to see the simple cart with the seller, usually old man, preparing this cake and selling to school students. Not every student was afford but I loved it and still love nowadays!
In order to get successful in business, the owner had to face a lot of challenges. His story is inspiring to me. Definitely hard work pays off. Thank you for sharing this video, Mark!

My childhood delicacy. My sister went to the school opposite this place and I remember fondly every time I saw a cart vendor, how much I wanted a tiny slice of this cake 25+ years ago. Thanks for sharing and I will definitely visit this place when I visit Saigon next time.

This is my favorite new food tour channel especially on days I miss Vietnam. Threw me for a loop hearing a southern boy from the states speak Vietnamese with a northern accent, in Saigon, and doing it so well and respectfully! Agreed the commentary is the cherry on top. Loved the interaction with the Ch'u shop owner - these values are important should not be forgotten - family, hard work and perseverance. Would love to visit his shop next time I'm there and try their b'anh dua w/coconut and durian. Thank you!

2 người đi ăn hàng rất là vui, mình là người Việt sống ở Mỹ 32 năm rồi và mới về Vn lúc summer, đồ ăn Vn món nào cũng ngon từ mặn đến ngọt ( đừng ăn ngọt nhiều quá nhé bạn) người Việt rất là thân thiện và rộng rãi.

Pandan is local Malay word in Malaysia. In English we call it Screwpine. The pandan coconut in Vietnam is very good. In Malaysia we have similar pancake with ground peanut, corn and butter filling. We called it Apom Balik. Also with pandan flavour
I think he said the pandan flavour is just a recent flavour. He said, traditionally vietnamese only enjoy the vanilla flavour with coconut. But I remember when I was young, there has always been pandan and coconut flavour and this is in early 80s.

The pandan coconut cake reminds me of the peanut pancake called apam balik in Malaysia. Apam balik is very popular in Malaysia. The pancake is crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. The original filling is crushed peanuts, sugar, corn and butter, but there are also many other types of fillings including coconut, banana and chocolate, durian, etc. Indonesia has their version as well and is very rich with chocolate, peanuts and butter called martabak. The origin of this pancake is Fujian Chinese.

Nothing special about that. Since he’s having a skinny Vietnamese teaching him how to speak per hour. I mean, if anyone having a boyfriend or girlfriend or good friend next to u, u also can speak that new language in 7 to 9 months or max 1.5 years.
