Well, making the agreed-upon ad for the sponsored episode as hilarious as they did it already a second time in this episode (after the already mentioned knife-ad) astonishingly _adds_ to the experience, I would not be on RUclips was it not for my adblocker, but these Sampson sponsoring pieces are a delight.
These videos are often funny as well as inspiring, but this one has the best laughs since Patrick and Megan did their 'totally off their heads on paint-fumes' piece to camera years back. The contained anarchy of a happy work-place is a wonderful thing to see.
So many RUclips channels do cheesy commercials - basically reading from a script, while praising and pretending to use the products, etc. Out of need, Tally Ho does a few, but they are always inventive, funny, and just a little irreverent. As a result, they are actually honest and very effective. I'm pretty sure that the companies that sponsor them are happy to see them done in this way. They are a means to an end, and as long as they are well done, and help to pay the freight, keep 'em coming. Just not too many, as we all appreciate Tally Ho's authenticity and lack of commercialism.
Are we sure this build is in the USA? Those accents, it was just like being in Manchester city centre. We know what these chaps will be doing when the project is complete.

He's certainly done a credible job but I was wincing a little as he was chamfering those corners waiting for the blowout on the corner opposite the direction he was pushing that chisel and watching him planing I'm wondering if he's paying attention to grain direction . But that's just me being nitpicky because I've had to fix things because of that.

It was pretty clear way back in an earlier episode when Leo showed some of Patrick's pottery that he had some serious artistic talent working with his hands. Patrick's transition to wood working is both impressive and beautiful. Chapeau!
I live in Panama and run a 50” chainsaw mill. I use the cheapest vegetable oil I can find to lubricate my bar and chain, (it works great in the tropics probably not so well in the cold). I’ve never seen anyone use water before. I'm guessing you don’t want oil on your wood? Any other reason for the water?
There's no reason one can't use water. Chainsaws are commonly used to make ice block sculptures and to carve into frozen lakes to create natural ice blocks. So long as you oil the saw after it'll be fine. Purple heart is already a pretty oily wood, hence it's use and value in ship building, so adding more oil isn't really needed. However, the wood is so dense and oily that the friction from the saw passing through it could cause burning of the wood and heating of the saw bar. Try making purple heart pegs with a plug drill bit some time. You'll have fire before you have a peg, which will be quite burnt. Water is ideal here since it moves the heat off much faster.
These videos from Leo Golden have an addictive quality, on more than one level. Each viewing raises my respect for the work and workmanship of Leo and his team. In concert with those now long gone, who constructed wooden vessels before the age of mechanisation and electronics. How did they do it all, with only muscle and pen and paper? The sheer amount of work and planning also indicate that in times past only Kings and the extremely wealthy would have been able to raise the resources for such undertakings.
Vessels were a lot simpler, heavier, and rougher in the days before power tools and yes, only Kings could afford them. This boat was actually built during the age of power tools. Not cordless drills and chainsaws, but power tools none-the-less. If you watch them work you'll notice that they start rough and gradually refine and refine and refine. Much of their power tool work is really just speeding up the rougher parts of the job. An awful lot of the final fit and finish is still being done with non-powered tools. Probably the biggest difference between this reconstruction and the way they built them 112 years ago is in the sealants. That black gook is really amazing stuff. As is epoxy. And obviously in the more modern "systems" they are beginning to install. Hybrids, lithium, flush toilets...

What we never see much off is the planning and organisation and administration and trouble shooting and problem solving and man management and a hot if other things. All of which together with the worry and anxiety which goes with it is the stuff Leo lives with day after day and week and month after month. He has been doing it and carrying it on his young shoulders for close on three years. That is where the real stamina and grit and know how is needed.

Because when completed and launched the vessel will represent a fair old chunk of real estate. In my wildest dreams I cannot imagine he would sell it to the highest bidder and retire in comfort. I envisage he has some sort of foundation in mind. To help foster individuals to develop a love of the skills of boat building and sailing with similar projects.
I just found out about this channel a couple weeks ago and I’m glad I found it. I was a deckhand on a buddy’s purse seiner out of Gig Harbor from 2009-2014. The boat he bought was built in ‘65 and needed a lot of work so we spent a lot of time hauled out in port Townsend slaving away on it every year. I had the pleasure of meeting and working with some of these guys. Definitely was a pleasure soaking in all their knowledge. Aside from fishing in Alaska, my time on the boat yard learning from these guys was one of the highlights of my life. Keep up the good work boys!

I love that there are still remnants of the Albert Strange design being incorporated in the woodwork. It gives a person a feel of time when Tally-Ho was built. Very nice! The video production continues to hold to Leo's high standards. I particularly enjoyed the camping scene where he cut the music and then used it to gently pull the audience back to the main storyline.
Re trimtab on a rudder. I did a trim tab on an aircraft rudder, and discovered a few lessons: The turbulent surface layer is quite thick so far back, that the trimtab must be larger than the calculations (modelling the surface layer in software is difficult), or moved out of the turbulent layer. If not, it will not work at all. Used direct brushless motor to move the trimtab. Exposed to weather. Alternative was a push-rod style mechanical actuator. You can also get oscillations if the trimtab is not stiff enough or balanced; not sure if that is an issue at so slow speed.
Seeing Patrick and Nick together makes me so incredibly happy. Also. Patrick just filming Nick's face, barely keeping it together, bubbling with whatever creaking laughter you call that, that was such a pure moment. The amount of... in that scene is very unfiltered and very special. I'm not a poet, but I'd write poetry for this.j

Having done a lot of fibreglass work it’s nice to see someone who, like me, doesn’t bother wetting out the wood first. It’s not necessary. What is necessary is that you add enough resin that the wood doesn’t suck the cloth dry as it soaks in. And peel ply, that both flattens the glass, absorbs excess resin, and leaves a nice textured smooth finish. Not to mention negating the need to sand it before bonding anything else, even if that’s weeks or months later. Way to go.
Leo, you have managed to assemble such a talented team of craftsmen who also happen to be great personalities. Such great attention to detail throughout the whole project means she's going to be gorgeous when finished.

Hey, danish joiner here. Amazing work on the drawers, but next time make sure to have the grain of the bottoms going perpendicular to the front. This is because wood expands much more across the grain compared to along it. This will insure that a nice and tight fitting drawer won’t become to tight, or in worst case stuck, in a high humidity environment. Awesome to see this amazing work!
The grain direction of which part of the drawer is the be perpendicular to the "front"? Front? Back? Sides? Bottom? By "front" do you mean the plane of the front of the drawer?
@@SampsonBoatCo Hello Leo, what we do is pull the drawers out, flip them so the bottom edge is up and rub the rails with a paraffin wax candle. I do this every year or so and it works well. Does Pete ever pop in to check up on you?
The bottom should be allowed to move with this expansion and not nailed down (unless the nails were in oversized holes.) Cabinet makers go to great effort to allow for wood expansion. Not allowing for expansion will cause bowing and splitting.
The last few episodes have been the best for me. Getting into the above and below-deck carpentry has been an absolute pleasure to watch. The accuracy, attention to detail and the final finish is wood-porn. Can't wait to see the finished result. A quick marketing tip. There has to be the possibility to buy high quality, high resolution photographs of TH when she's finished, black & white as well as in colour. All of the photos should be done before she is even used so everything is looking pristine. They'll sell like hot cakes and I'll be one of the first to order 👍

I have been binging this series from the beginning. I’m hooked. But honestly this is the first video I’ve seen in years…(weeks) that I really felt connected and compelled to comment. I love the wood work and the project but swing your b roll shots and your crew interaction and your free time is really nice and I look forward to more of it. I hope to one day get to meet you and see your boat. I’m a disabled veteran and sailing is my dream.

Best part of my morning..! Thanks to all the crew for making coffee time so much fun. And look, at minute 16:46 we see a little bit of maritime heritage from my home here in LouYouAll, Kentucky. There at the end of the dock we see the unmistakeable profile of an Aluminum Cruisers Corporation 'Marinette'. Those craft were built here in the 60's & 70's of all welded construction, fitted with huge V8 twins (gas was cheap), and floated and trucked to the far corners of the globe. I remember my father taking me into the factory to see them under construction, welders on rolling stools running a 35 foot bead down the chine... Pretty far down the spectrum from chisels and shavings, but a quality craft in its class.

Leo - Not too long ago the government, here in the UK, came down hard on the import duty for boats coming in to the UK register. With this in mind it might be good to revisit the 'Ship of Theseus' in order to nail down Tally Ho as the historic UK built boat, rather than let Customs & Excise take the view of it being a replica built in the USA. Not sure of all the facts, but it could save a fortune in import duty when you bring her back home.
Each time I watch the guys seem to just keep outdoing themselves. Just beautiful craftsmanship. Bravo. I know nothing about woodworking or boats, but I learn a ton just watching this channel. Can't wait to see it splash.

I love that there are still remnants of the Albert Strange design being incorporated in the woodwork. It gives a person a feel of time when Tally-Ho was built. Very nice! All that shiny Brass looks great. If only Tally-Ho speak, I am sure she would be pleased with progress. Well done Leo and crew. Can't wait for the next video on the rudder.

The video production continues to hold to Leo's high standards. I particularly enjoyed the camping scene where he cut the music and then used it to gently pull the audience back to the main storyline.
Re trimtab on a rudder. I did a trim tab on an aircraft rudder, and discovered a few lessons: The turbulent surface layer is quite thick so far back, that the trimtab must be larger than the calculations (modelling the surface layer in software is difficult), or moved out of the turbulent layer. If not, it will not work at all. Used direct brushless motor to move the trimtab. Exposed to weather. Alternative was a push-rod style mechanical actuator. You can also get oscillations if the trimtab is not stiff enough or balanced; not sure if that is an issue at so slow speed.

Having done a lot of fibreglass work it’s nice to see someone who, like me, doesn’t bother wetting out the wood first. It’s not necessary. What is necessary is that you add enough resin that the wood doesn’t suck the cloth dry as it soaks in. And peel ply, that both flattens the glass, absorbs excess resin, and leaves a nice textured smooth finish. Not to mention negating the need to sand it before bonding anything else, even if that’s weeks or months later. Way to go.
Leo, you have managed to assemble such a talented team of craftsmen who also happen to be great personalities. Such great attention to detail throughout the whole project means she's going to be gorgeous when finished.

Hey, danish joiner here. Amazing work on the drawers, but next time make sure to have the grain of the bottoms going perpendicular to the front. This is because wood expands much more across the grain compared to along it. This will insure that a nice and tight fitting drawer won’t become to tight, or in worst case stuck, in a high humidity environment. Awesome to see this amazing work!
The grain direction of which part of the drawer is the be perpendicular to the "front"? Front? Back? Sides? Bottom? By "front" do you mean the plane of the front of the drawer?

@@SampsonBoatCo Hello Leo, what we do is pull the drawers out, flip them so the bottom edge is up and rub the rails with a paraffin wax candle. I do this every year or so and it works well. Does Pete ever pop in to check up on you?
The bottom should be allowed to move with this expansion and not nailed down (unless the nails were in oversized holes.) Cabinet makers go to great effort to allow for wood expansion. Not allowing for expansion will cause bowing and splitting.
I hope Leo will not stop making videos after this project is done. Making a boat of his own design will be an awesome subject. I'm a lifetime follower

The last few episodes have been the best for me. Getting into the above and below-deck carpentry has been an absolute pleasure to watch. The accuracy, attention to detail and the final finish is wood-porn. Can't wait to see the finished result. A quick marketing tip. There has to be the possibility to buy high quality, high resolution photographs of TH when she's finished, black & white as well as in colour. All of the photos should be done before she is even used so everything is looking pristine. They'll sell like hot cakes and I'll be one of the first to order 👍

I have been binging this series from the beginning. I’m hooked. But honestly this is the first video I’ve seen in years…(weeks) that I really felt connected and compelled to comment. I love the wood work and the project but swing your b roll shots and your crew interaction and your free time is really nice and I look forward to more of it. I hope to one day get to meet you and see your boat. I’m a disabled veteran and sailing is my dream.

Best part of my morning..! Thanks to all the crew for making coffee time so much fun. And look, at minute 16:46 we see a little bit of maritime heritage from my home here in LouYouAll, Kentucky. There at the end of the dock we see the unmistakeable profile of an Aluminum Cruisers Corporation 'Marinette'. Those craft were built here in the 60's & 70's of all welded construction, fitted with huge V8 twins (gas was cheap), and floated and trucked to the far corners of the globe. I remember my father taking me into the factory to see them under construction, welders on rolling stools running a 35 foot bead down the chine... Pretty far down the spectrum from chisels and shavings, but a quality craft in its class.

Leo - Not too long ago the government, here in the UK, came down hard on the import duty for boats coming in to the UK register. With this in mind it might be good to revisit the 'Ship of Theseus' in order to nail down Tally Ho as the historic UK built boat, rather than let Customs & Excise take the view of it being a replica built in the USA.
Not sure of all the facts, but it could save a fortune in import duty when you bring her back home.
