    This is a fantastic recording. I do not know how I have missed it for the past 6 years.
    As far as I know the northernmost 20% of so of the platforms in Charleville are actually in County Limerick and as such this must be one of the only stations in Ireland ever to have straddled the border of two counties.
    For a line that had lost its passenger service over 30 years earlier and was about to close there seems to have been a very high standard of maintenance of the permanent way.

    Very nostalgic piece of footage there, my Grandfather was a proud locomotive driver who worked nearly all his working life in CIE. ❤. Thanks up for the upload.

    Wonderful footage! I was on that trip and had a run in the cab....my only time! Such a shame it closed.

    Very historic. The closure of this line was insanity. It was a direct link between Limerick and Cork cities. Even today reopening it would make sense.

      The line was too limited. I believe the speed limit was in the region of 28mph. The investment needed back then to bring it to a standard that could compete with road was prohibative, unfortunately. Delighted to find some footage of it though, just before it closed.

    It was great to see that video. They looked at reopening that line as part of the M20 project last year having a direct train service between Cork and Limerick but it was deemed too expensive and it is now on a list of future greenways.

    At 0:30 l assume the line is forking off for Limerick from the rail to Dublin!? 🤔
    At 3:00 the train overshoots the platform and they get out of the cab, l take it the platform was too short, where was it? Why was it not extended?
    At 4:00 the line converges with the Limerick to Kerry railway.

      Yes the first junction seen is where the line diverges from the Cork-Dublin main line just north of Charleville. The stations on the line had very short platforms, so most of the carriages were off the platforms.

    I find it strange steam disappeared from CIE in 1963 but from NIR in 1970-1. But then I have never understood politics or could it be corruption. I hope I am wrong on the latter. Politics stinks anyway but it shouldn't relate to corruption.

      The disappearance of steam both north and south, and the respective dates, have nothing whatsoever to do with any sort of politics or still less, corruption. How on earth could it be "corrupt" to modernise the locomotives on a railway? Also, there is no reason that any suspicion should be raised over the differing dates.

    This railway route should be reopened to trains to stop traffic jams, road deaths & car accidents.

      Not enough of the original bed left now. The N20 around Croom is laid down on the old bed. It would have made for a good commuter line if the layout was maintained and modified but what was there on the video was pretty much useless, even back pre 1967

      Money need to spend to reopening the following 1) Athlone to Mullingar, 2) Western Rail Corridor Galway, Sligo via Northern Ireland, 3) Navan to Drogheda, 4) Waterford to Wexford via Roeselare, 5) Limerick to Tralee via Adare and Foynes of course

      @@martinwalsh3228 Better off retaining the line as a greenway. At least that preserves the route , provides a useful amenity, draws in tourism to the local economy and costs very little to maintain especially in comparison to heavy rail.
