In 1966,travelled from London to Durrow Station for our annual summer holiday in Stradbally. I was 3 years old and vaguely remember alighting at Stradbally. The line closed March 1967.
My father was from near the villages of Villierstown and Aglish, on the way back to England we had to travel to Waterford station by car. It does seem sad that the county of Waterford does not have any rail lines across the whole of it. I do exclude the Suir valley narrow gauge in that statement.
Another wonderful piece. I am so thankful that the late Mr Price had the foresight to make these wonderful videos , maybe as just a hobby, but wonderful historical recollections today.
A delightful video, so nice. I would have been 20 then. Many happy memories of the north Wexford line and trips to Tramore in earlier years. Richard Kingham
I'm from the north and my son and I rode the greenway in 2018 and I was struggling on some of the gradients coming back to Kilmacthomas. I was thinking that some of the trains must have been double headed and, sure enough, I saw a photo of one. I'd love to get back. The film brings back a lot of memories.
Not 100 sure but I don't think there was any doubles of B141 class working on the line but failed locos would have been hauled on trains . B121s , A and C class plus B101 Sulzers along with an occasional B141 worked the line.
Really enjoyed this very much.. Made the journey from Dungarvan to Waterford (and back) many times in the 1950s and early 1960s, I remember all those places. Thanks so much for sharing this, it is very much appreciated.
Thank you for uploading this truly beautiful film. My wife and I cycled the Waterford Greenway (the route of this old line) this past Tuesday and Wednesday, and we will do it again one day. The pleasure of doing so will be greatly increased with this film in mind. John Cosgrave
At Gracedieu Junction, I think the other track went down to the South Quays where there used to be a working port. In the car park opposite Treacy's Hotel, there's a steel rail embedded in the road surface. And in Bilberry, the road goes over a bridge beside Waters Gate and the Greenway car park.
That's right, the line leading away from Grace Dieu served the old terminus at 'Waterford South' near the port. The station closed in the late 1900s, but the yard remained in use for goods until the mid-1970s.
Agree with many of the comments below. Wonderful to have the footage all the same and a little piece of the videographer lives on having posted it up for us. Thanks to all who do so!
It was very interesting i loved it :) i live along this line near Kilmacthomas , and never saw a train running on it cause too young , so its great to see old footage of the line working ! that line is now a greenway from waterford city to dungarvan :)
I can tell you about a real cover up. On August 1, 1980 they derailed a train in Buttevant Station, County Cork, Ireland. The resulting crash killed 18 people and injured about 70. They said it was caused by negligence. They had wrongfully placed a set of manually operated points on the tracks. It was set to derail the train. That was not an accident. Negligence was not the reason. They derailed that train deliberately. That accusation can be backed up by six months of detailed, explicit warnings and threats that came before this act of terrorism. The next morning, August 2, 1980, a bomb slaughtered 86 people, and injured 200 in the main train station in Bologna, Italy. This attack, too, had been detailed in the threats. I ought to know. I had heard all these terrorist threats clearly. I survived the derailment in Ireland.
I am almost certain that my younger brother and I were the two little guys standing at Kilmeaden station. We lived close by and spent many a day at the station during the summer school holidays. The station master was a lovely man and when goods trains were shunting in to the little goods yard we often got a spin in the engine.
My wife walked this a year ago wonderful scenery should never been closed very short sighted by the politicians of the day especially when everyone wants to be eco friendly nowadays
Every town should have a train running through it in 2020 Ireland.. Of course this is not to be and it's so sad that the people of Dungarvan don't have a choice to take the train from their home town to travel freely around the country.. I can vaguely remember traveling in the backseat of my dads old ford car having to stop as the barrier came down to allow the train to continue on its route on the way out to Clonea Strand . A wonderful video and thanks for putting it up..
Great footage, trust the government to make an absolute stones of anything under their control. I remember walking sections of the track as a young lad in 2003 shortly before it was completely lifted.
Truly fantastic seanic railway, the sights & the places sadly no longer with us thanks to the so called brains in this country, that said thanks for sharing
Totally egree with you, but thought resurrecting the railway would have been more benefitting for transport purposes, having said that it looks like a very good walk, so what's the distance from end to end on a good day !! Thanks,

Wonderful trip down memory lane . When Ireland was a better place
better in what way magdalene laundries industrial schools sadist christian brothers some things have changed for the better but not all
Gorgeous video. Had a spin along the line on a bike recently, it's lovely to compare and contrast the views from then and now.

Thanks Robin, glad you found the film of interest having done the greenway in 2018.

Wonderful video! What a timepiece of old Ireland.
This is a stunning video of railway travel now sadly long gone.
Fantastic film by the late Tony Price , I projected this film with many others for him at his many visits to the Cork Area IRRS.
Awesome video!!!! Walked this route about 15 years ago just after the track had been lifted and you could get through the undergrowth.
Thanks glad you enjoyed the video.
What a fabulous video showcasing this beautiful area... Thank you so much for sharing this.
Only cycled it yesterday lovely place
Fantastic footage. Great to see the way the Waterford Greenway used to be. Thankfully we can now enjoy those scenic views again.
Waterford Weather q
This is priceless. Watching this after cycling Kilmacthomas to Waterford greenway.
Amazing footage of a fantastically scenic line.
Agree with many of the comments below. Wonderful to have the footage all the same and a little piece of the videographer lives on having posted it up for us. Thanks to all who do so!

Great to see the red iron bridge in operation! I used to walk across it all the time in my early teens. Shame they pulled it down.
Very good to wstch.tis old line when trains ran.cycled it few wks ago.very sad no train still goin.
Thank you.
Wonderful Footage of the Waterford to Mallow Railway Line, Just great to see this and thank you for sharing this.
Thanks, glad you liked it.

Thanks John, appreciate those comments, glad you enjoyed the video, it looked a wonderful sunny evening.
My uncle bob was station master there and my father tom [a driver ]gave me a spin around 81 ,lovely route it was
Those were the days getting a spin in the engine .....it wud never happen nowadays...the downside of health and safety
Masterpiece that is
Brilliant footage!
Traveled this line with the late Joe St Ledger in 1963 lovely footage.
That's great. There are some of Joe's films in the IRRS archive showing the track-lifting trains west of Dungarvan, and will be uploaded once edited.
Shame it’s gone........😞
Lovely footage 👍
At least the route is protected now. You never know in the future.........
My wife walked this a year ago wonderful scenery should never been closed very short sighted by the politicians of the day especially when everyone wants to be eco friendly nowadays
Stunning
Wonderful video. Invaluable.
Shame on the government

What a lovely train ride. Shame it’s gone now 😩 Look how many truck they’re on the roads today 🙄
Great footage, trust the government to make an absolute stones of anything under their control. I remember walking sections of the track as a young lad in 2003 shortly before it was completely lifted.
Completely agree. If something is nice to the people, the government are sure to destroy it. Complete bunch of useless toe-rags running the country
I live in dungarvan and this is now a cycle way but it has not changed much
Jimmy!
that's lovely
Truly fantastic seanic railway, the sights & the places sadly no longer with us thanks to the so called brains in this country, that said thanks for sharing
+Paul Johnston Indeed a wonderful railway scenery wise, at least it can now be appreciated as a greenway.
Totally egree with you, but thought resurrecting the railway would have been more benefitting for transport purposes, having said that it looks like a very good walk, so what's the distance from end to end on a good day !! Thanks,
48km
Thanks for that, won't be rushing out to do that distance jst yet,
hi Paul those seanic views now exist as the Waterford Greenway , but you are right it should never have been closed !!
Ah the stories you hear of lost railway in Ireland from Patrickswell to Charleville or Clonmel to Thurles
How wonderful...
You can now cycle or walk the line from Dungarvan eastwards with the new Deise greenway.
Did this guy have a drone on the bridge scene haha. Good editer fur that time
Friston time I went to England I went on that
They need money to reopen all closed railway lines throughout Ireland sooner rather then later.
Political talking 🙇♂️ shame
Back when train drivers were train drivers.
Lots of manned crossings. Did the people get free housing and wages ? Seemed an easy lifestyle...
