  • Ahhhh Brett...You special, special man.
Watch, behold, and observe as our favorite Generic White Man does the exact opposite of what the title of this video implies he will be doing, coupled with my very own unwanted commentary here and there.
I'm already planning on doing a follow-up video showcasing him ACTUALLY doing stuff to benefit his own mental health, because he really is trying and that's what matters the most. SELF IMPROVEMENT AND THERAPY FTW
The show he is from is called Inside Job, and you can watch it on Netflix!
Oh also #Newdeal4animation on twitter lol

Brett’s type of person is one that isn’t seen enough in media. When most creators depict someone with anxiety or depression or any mental health issue in that vein they usually opt to make them introverted and self-isolating, but Brett proposes the demographic who isn’t like that at all. He’s extroverted and puts himself off as confident, yet he still needs help.

The fact that Brett projects a happy middle-class family as his ideal family when his childhood is spent in a mansion really says something. He’d much rather have the picture perfect family dynamic he sees in shows than living in a mansion with his family. What’s stopping him from imagining his happy family reunion with a great feast, served by butlers and whatnot? He desperately craves love and intimacy with a family that he’d rather live in a less well off but closely bounded family than just a healthy relationship with his family.

Used the blood of a deadman to sign a contract (defiling a corpse), said contract being for a real estate scheme which involved hunting down interns for sport, constantly underpays and steals money from his employees. Was willing to sacrifice Brett for profit, lies viciously to those around him "I still never got that Attaboy from JR." "That's right I'm a liar Oprah..." I love how Brett is so obviously not okay as the show goes on, but when we first meet him he just appears to be this simple-minded, friendly guy. Like, not to trivialize mental illness and personal struggle, but the older I've gotten the more I've realized that everyone has problems - not the "I'm behind in my studies" or "I can't get a girlfriend" problems, but more the "I never resolved my deep-seated childhood trauma where I was molested by a family friend and now I have a fear of intimacy that's damaging my personal relationships" problems. And EVERYONE has these. It really puts things into perspective.

It seems like Brett's lonely childhood gave him an obsessive need to be liked by others and he values himself based on how much he's liked by others. And it seems like Reagan's lonely childhood has made her pretty terrified of being genuinely liked/known intimately (struggling with dating, friends, etc.) and she tries very hard to NOT value herself based on how likeable she is to others.

    • @valkyria4631

That need to be liked is also why I think Brett struggles with feeling like he has no real personality. If you're constantly trying to bend yourself into whatever shape others like, then you HAVE no defined shape. You're never doing or thinking of anything for yourself. If the answer to "what's your favorite color?" is "whatever color will make you like me the most", then you don't actually have any answer to that question because you're too fearful of staking down an opinion that someone else might disagree with.

It's crazy to think of how much Rand hates him (I'm pretty sure he sees him as Orrin 2.0) Brett is just too adorable. Just some thoughts but, I noticed that out of all of Reagen's co-workers her dad really hates Brett in particular. The rest of her Co-workers he's indifferent to or just sees them as lesser than him and doesn't really give a shit about them but, he's actively hostile, weary of, and passive aggressive against Brett most of the time, only barely tolerating him to get something from him or from Reagan. Throughout the show whenever they're in the same room he always shoots Brett a dirty glare unless he's directly talking to him, sometimes even then. There's other subtle things too like how Brett matches the description of "lesser people" Rand gave on Orrin, or how he wants to kill anyone who's ever slept with his ex-wife (Brett had a crush on her); how he tried beating Brett to death in their fight going as far as trying to convince Reagan to be ok with it while he punched Brett's lights out (which had me in stiches) literally calling Brett an emotional support dog (which granted is low-key kind of spot on but, not for the reasons Rand thinks, he just wanted to degrade Brett and foreshadow how he sees him as lesser than.) Finding joy in Brett's pain when he called Reagan in episode 1 begging for her help. Man just thinking about it Rand really had Brett's number this season if this was Mortal Kombat story mode people would be calling Brett a Jobber and Rand his heel 🤣. I can't wait for season 2 I know we all want Reagan to stand up against her father but, Brett deserves to knock Rand's lights out if not at least punch him once.
Eta: I wonder if Brett still has his nostalgia max powers would be nice to see a repressed and significantly weaker version of them dormant in him.

    • @gregjayonnaise8314
      @gregjayonnaise8314 2 года назад +385

I think it’s because out of everyone, Brett is the person who Reagan cares about most aside from Rand. A lot of the time, abusive people try and isolate their victims so they stay dependent on them. He did this with Orrin so that Reagan would only stay focused on what Rand wanted her to focus on. Brett is essentially Orrin 2.0, since he cares a lot about Reagan, and he’s a better source of love than Rand because Brett doesn’t use her for his own selfish gain. Rand hates Brett so much because Brett had the potential of making Reagan realize how shitty Rand was being.

@@gregjayonnaise8314 That's a really good point! I want to see Brett and Reagan stand up against Rand. I wonder if subsequently Reagan will help Brett move past his own family as well, their friendship is just great. Reagan learned to open up to people easier because of her coworkers and she found a connection similar to Orrin in Brett where she can trust him and be recognized for her accomplishments. Whereas Brett learned from Reagan to be more assertive and put up boundaries between what he's willing to do for others. They're both not fully there to where they've completely resolved their issues but, it's easy to see their progress, that they are slowly getting past their previous issues. This is off topic but, when Reagan couldn't hug people, she hugged Rand and immediately punched him, afterwards in the Brettfast club she's the first one to hug Brett. Alot of people already pointed that out but, there's a line she tells rand "No, not really why do people do this?" when he asks if the hug is doing anything for her, later on she's actually smiling when she hugs Brett implying hugging him actually did something for her, and that she has formed an attachment to him. I hope we get to see Orrin in season 2 Reagan deserves to have another supportive friend in her life.

Alright, so, since many people aren't reading the description, I'm gonna go ahead and say it then pin it here:
These clips are from a show called "Inside Job"! Which is available on Netflix RIGHT NOW!
And since we're already at it, I'd like to tell ya'll about a cool little thing called #Newdeal4animation
Obviously, this video I made is just clips of a show that I took and mashed together, a show that would not exist without the very hard work of many, MANY talented animators, storyboarders, color designers, writers, etc!
    ....Who all get paid....Very little.
No, seriously! Did you guys know that a writer for animation hardly ever gets paid as much as a person that does the EXACT SAME JOB for live action productions, even though they both require the exact same skills? Isn't that crazy??
Anyway, I totes recommend checking out the #Newdeal4animation tag on twitter, where you can read stories from people that work in the industry and even support them by making posts with that tag! There's also some petitions you guys can help and sign that I might edit this comment to have when I find em again, lol.
Double anyway: Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it. :)
