Tamiya XV01 vs XV02 Round 2: Rally Race-Off - Who Wins?

  • Hi and welcome to this video where we pit the Tamiya XV-01 head-to-head against the new Tamiya XV-02 Pro! The race is on a tight and twisty off-road rally course with plenty of elevation changes and loose and bumpy terrain!
    Both cars are totally stock, and as the XV-01 comes with a 27T silver can motor, I fitted the same to the XV-02 Pro so it was an even contest.
    As you will see in this video, the XV-02 has a greater ride-height and suffers from more body-roll than the XV-01 (and consequently more roll-overs!) - I think this is down to the longer TRF shocks and the higher C-of-G in the XV-02 due to battery placement. Check out the XV02 chassis spec here: • Tamiya XV02 Pro vs XV0...
    The XV-02 also seems to torque steer due to the propshaft driven differentials as opposed to the belt drive on the XV01 that eliminates that.
    I hope you enjoy the comparison, it's just a bit of fun but I think it does highlight some of the differences between the chassis.
    More head-to-heads coming soon!
    Many thanks to Rob ‪@robbrennanrc‬ for the help making this video and of course to my friend Gary for loaning his XV02 Pro to the channel for these tests.
    Note: The XV02 Pro comes in kit form and does not include a motor, body shell or any electronics. We are using Gary's basher Subaru body and I fitted a standard servo and 27 turn silver can so that the spec of the XV02 is the same as the XV01 for a fair comparison.

    Hi Mark and Rob. It's a little bit unusual that the older version performces slightly better and is more durable. But the outtakes show you both had fun and that's the keypoint😁

    The CKG RC channel also added spacers to the XV-02 steering ball joint improve bump steer and also changed suspension hole position for much better handling.

    Wahey!!
    The dynamic duo back again! 🤣
    What better way to spend a Friday night-
    Tamiya XV01 / 2's, rallying, Mark and Robs humour, and a few 8.4 % ciders!!
    Great track/landscape there guys, and a great sense of realism.... even the crashes look very realistic as they plunge off the hillside into the valley below!
    Loving this series of videos Mark, it's been most useful for me in determining my next model to buy!
    You and RC Dom have helped steer me towards the XV01, which genuinely seems to be the slightly better chassis of the two!
    And, the vision will be completed using the Audi quattro body shell I think!
    Cracking content as always guys!

      Hey-hey mate! Yup, you can't keep us away! Great to hear you enjoyed it along with a well deserved bevvy or three!
      Yeah, this was a great location for these two beauties, pity it's quite a jaunt from where I live. We spent ages trying to find a good area for the run closer to home but failed miserably!
      You can't go wrong with an XV01, especially as it's so much cheaper than the 02. I love mine to bits. And the Quattro A2 is a perfect body for this, especially with those 6 spotlights lit up!!!
      All the best, matey!

  • @madsrcbuggy
    @madsrcbuggy Год назад +3

    Yup, I think skittish is the issue on the 02... I noticed on the sharp corners, it would throw out the rear too much and then it took a while to regain the speed out of the corner. The 01 was more tight, as I saw it. But then again, I had the times delivered as I watched. The 02 looked very fast and made it around the course with more drama!
    Speaking of drama, lots of Epic Rob commenting as usual in there, ha ha!
    Great Saturday morning entertainment for me, have a lovely weekend there, my friend!

    • @MarkBryanRC

      Hi Mads, yep I think you called this one correctly! I had trouble keeping the 02 in line after a turn, I think I was over-compensating for the drift. I'm sure that with some fine-tuning the 02 could be a lot better, but i think it was fair to keep each car with the stock settings. Yeah, the 01 definitely felt slow in comparison...
      Haha, I love Rob's commentary and especially the laughs!
      Glad you enjoyed it mate, hope all is well with you this weekend and and take care!

    Hiya matey and happy Friday to you. Well I did enjoy that and am feeling pleased that my prediction that the XV-01 would have the best times was correct. It just seems easier to point in the right direction than the XV-02 from what I've seen. I think that the XV-02 is more tunable so maybe it can be made easier to drive? Also I know that with the rally cars, extra ground clearance means that they roll over too easily. My TA-01 was hopeless until I lowered it. Anyway great vid and love Rob's reactions. Always good fun. Like I was saying it's a great area for the cars with the different levels and that also works well for the video. Hope all is well mate. Cheers for now 😁

      Hi Pete and happy Friday to you too, mate! Hope your week went well. I'm glad you were correct, and you are right that it's easier to handle and is certainly the more predictable of the two. I have looked around and can't find too many other detailed comparisons of these chassis (except for Rex of course) and he says the 02 is designed to be more agile and skiddish! And yeah, top heavy is not what you need on a narrow rally car or it's "Mr Tumble Time"!!! We hope to come back to this track as it's bloody great for rallying, but it's a few miles away from home. It was worth it all just to hear Rob laughing! Wishing you a cracking weekend, matey - cheers! :))

    Nice one Gents, above and beyond as always, and thank you Gary. Interesting the dog bones popping out, if memory serves when upgrading the 01 with GF01 damper set for max ride height on the 01 before the steering can bind when suspension is fully extended, the rear dog bones could pop out over very bumpy ground, but that was once the suspension was upgraded, not fresh out of the box, I'm sure like an xv01, the 02's price could almost double when going all out on upgrades, and this is my problem, I would be disappointed to spend £330 and to know it needs basics like uj's out of the box (and I do mean basics, it is almost 2023, and this is the new premium/flagship off road chassis). To end on a positive, (don't want to sound like a hater) i sure we haven't seen the xv02 really shine yet, hopefully Tamiya has given us another quality chassis that can do everything but needs setting up more for that preferred discipline. I haven't gone looking for much 02 footage, but would be interesting to see both compared over very low grip conditions, i expect the 02 to be more predictable, i think with the overdrive in rear could make an excellent drift car (not something i'm into but would expect easier/better results with tuning a 02 over the 01, especially for average driver) and given the dedication of the 1/10 rally fans on the forums it's only a matter of time before the 02 magic unleased, again thanks for taking the time and making the effort to try and answer the questions we need to know.
    Cheers and best wishes.

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Год назад +1

      Hi there and many thanks for the interesting comment, it's much appreciated here! I'm keeping my 01 pretty stock but I do have a set of UJ's (donated by The OAG RC) and a Sport Tuned to fit at some point. I think the 02 does have UJ's, but it was the dogbone end popping out of the diff output cup that was causing the problem with this 02. But yes, I did think you'd get more hop-ups included with the 02 considering it's hefty price tag, and yeah, you could easily break £650 with a few more options, blooming crazy for an RC car if you ask me! And it doesn't even come with a body shell or motor!!! I also agree with your positive points though, I think that with some (cheap) tweaking it could be a lot better. Personally I'd lower the suspension a little and have a play with the toe and camber settings, but as I said in the video, the whole point was to run both cars in the stock setup. I have looked and can't find much in the form of comparisons here on the tube, except for REX RC's @rexdlu who seems to agree (basically!) with my experiences with the 02.
      It would also be fun to experiment with the overdrive settings, yeah that could have some interesting results! As you say, I'm sure we'll see more on the forums soon.
      Thanks again for taking the time to share your thoughts and for your supportive words! Cheers and best wishes to you too! :))

Watching the footage I couldn't see a difference in speed, but the XV-01 cornering looked a little tighter to me, so maybe that caused the time difference. Speaking of time phenomena - I wrote this comment 2 days ago....🤣😉. Have a good weekend dude...👍🏻👍🏻.

      Haha, you make me laugh, dude! Always great humour in your comments and much appreciated here! Yes, I did flit around the present, past and future didn't I? Well, mate, the XV01 just feels like it knows where to go and the XV02 was the DeLorean of the two! Speaking of which, you must have one too if you wrote this 2 days ago!!!! I tell you what, lets meet up back in 1986 and we can give the "just released" Monster Beetle it's first run! Thanks as always, hope it's going well for you! :))

    I wonder if the times could be impacted by the gearing, the XV-02 is geared slower than the 01 out of the box

      Hi Paul, the original Holiday Buggy was released in 1980 but I don't know what the chassis was called, never heard of XBS. The chassis had torsion bar suspension and an open gearbox!
      The new Holiday Buggy is on the DT02 chassis, and they did do an XB (expert built) version. Sorry but that's all I know, dude! :)

    Hi Mark hope all is well. I would like to find out how many LED LIGHTS can be used on a rc car. I would use the ESC LIKE u did. Thanks

    • @MarkBryanRC
      @MarkBryanRC  Год назад

      Hi there! We are doing OK thanks! If you wire LEDs directly to the battery power cable on the ESC you could safely wire many LEDs without significantly reducing battery power, 20 LEDs would be fine.
      However, if you wire to the receiver the available power is much lower, I'd say a max of 8 LEDs.
      I hope this helps. :)
