Instead of a ball joint separator or pickle fork(I’m poor and stores closed rn), I used a big file and the jack to apply leverage. All you need is a little constant pressure on the top of the ball joint bolt and then repeatedly hit the casing with a hammer. (My file broke off at the end first time, so I applied less pressure second time and kept banging and then gave jack a little more pump, and alternated back and forth.)
Is it easier to replace the control arms and ball joints at the same time? Is there a control arm video for this? Is there a particular order if I were to replace both control arms and ball joints?
If you notice this video gets paused before the new ball joint is installed. That is because it is nearly impossible to install using this method . At first this video gave me confidence but after changing it like this it was definitely very difficult without removing the knuckle
what if the lower ball joint doesnt have them 3 nuts do you just have to replace whole lower control arm with ball joint already attached to control arm?
If you are going to do this at home in your garage or driveway, start spraying the fasteners with penetrant daily for a few days prior to the job. Kudos to Honda for the bolt-on design. But the upward-facing castle nut is questionable.
@@1AAuto Actually, when I went to do the job, I ended up using a pickle fork to separate the ball joint because in order to fit the tines of the lower part of my ball joint separator in, I would have needed to remove all of the braking components including the dust shield. A lot of mechanics will scoff at the idea of a pickle fork but I contend that if there is no plan to reuse the thing being separated, it is the fastest and most reliable way the separate the joint.
I recommend using a cheap pickle fork for the ball joint removal, i rented out a similar seperator as the video and it wouldn't fit all the way. but pickle fork worked fine.
im having a problem having the brake drum closer to the control arm so i can connect it. i had two people trying to push and pull these two together but there's just not enough leeway any suggestions please!
I'm using an oem ball joint separator (27308) for my 06 civic si and it's not fitting as easily due to the axle. Is there a particular ball joint separator you are using?
+Marian Luc It is an aftermarket ball joint that we carry. Here is a link to them on our website. www.1aauto.com/2006-11-honda-civic-ball-joint/i/1asbj00301?RUclips&CTA+Comment&YEyZ3zg2A
@@1AAuto i have a 2007 Honda Civic LX 4 door 1.8L.. im using DuraLast 104500069 lower ball joint. It seems to come with a "locking nut" instead of cotter pin and caste nut. When i try to tighten the nut its all loose.. the joint spins when i tighten so its impossible to tighten the nut. Is there anything i can do?

Video for a 2015 civic??
This is so convenient, no press or c-clamp needed! Props to Honda for making it easier for the 8th Gen Civic, the previous gen was such a hassle.
I miss these types of videos with this guy.

I love how they edited out the hard parts and make it seem so easy to do on a nice lift try doing it on the ground then you will no what’s up

were you able to do it without removing the knuckle?
I agree. It's possible but very difficult to reinstall. Definitely a 2 person job.
It was hard as hell but I got it done
I was able to do it with minor difficulty. Nut up buttercup
Saved money with this DIY!!

Any link for ball joint separetor?
Best to get the ball joint, with grease fitting so you can service them in the future.
Great video 😎
Great video. How do I remove without snapping out cv axel ?
Would have liked to have seen a full control arm replacement done
Just wondering if the si sedan is the same need new control arms and ball joints rehabbing front end. Thanks

Thank you for this helpful suggestion! Please let us know if any questions occur to you.

Both ball joins is the same ? I need left and right
Do you need to press the new ball joint in place? Or is it enough to tighten the nut to the right torque?
Just tighten it to 45 ft lb and you should be good
What is the make/model of the ball joint separator used here?
Where is the link for the extractor ball joint you did use? There is no link for in description. Thank you.
Would this be the same process on a 2017 civic sedan?
It's $50 for a new ball joint or $80 for the entire LCA and Ball Joint. So I just replaced the entire thing. Both sides. 2012
How did you work around the stabilizer bar?
Can those fit the 07 crv they look interchangeable
Great video! Well explained. Two thumbs up.
This ball joints have the sides left and right or is the same or not thanks
Do you have the specific link to the ball joint separator that you used in the video
Does the new ball joint not need to be pressed onto the knuckle?
No the ball joint is it's own piece that unbolts from the lower control arm. Awesome design by Honda makes it easy.
Would this generally be the same for a 2013?

Hey Richard How did you end up separating the ball joint if the separator was too thick?
My Honda keeps jerking to the left or right whenever I brake. Could this be the problem or is it the alignment?
+Irvin Morales You may want to check the suspension components to see if any of them are worn or frayed. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
Mine too I've changed my brakes thinking it was the problem and still go on it was my ball joint!
Should the ball joint not be dismantled from the lca before using the ball joint separator?
Very helpful and easy to do
did you have trouble getting the new ball joint in? seems to be very difficult
Is a front end alignment necessary after this job?.
+camram You should not have to get a front end alignment performed if you are just replacing the lower ball joints.
Nicely done.is that ball joint oem or aftermarket?

I assume the 2013 Civic has exactly the same size nuts ? :D
Hi love the videos,is it possible to do a video to change the rack ends on honda civic 2006?
+Wesley Reddy We do not have a video for this repair right now, but we'll keep this request in mind for a future video! 1AAuto.com
Tk u guys !! Nice video
Is this the same for 2012-2013 Civic?
+Shane W It may be similar, but we currently do not have a video on the ball joint installation for your vehicle.
I end up stripping the center nut :( cant get it out now. Used 17 with a breaker bar.
What if the ball joint doesn’t slide out like that?
Wack it with a hammer on the arm
OEM Code for ball joint??
What is the size of the cotter pin?
should the ball joint be loaded before you put on the final torque? Or is that not required in this instance. Thanks
+Danh Nguyen These are a direct replacement and you do not have to do anything to them prior to installing.

good job guys
Forgot to add ball jount separater tool in the list.
I badly need that ball joint now. But everytime i search on your website don't have just a ball joint it a set with arm.
+Createzter Leemil If you are able to confirm the year of your vehicle we would be happy to check for you.
there’s millions of places that u can buy a ball joint from.
You guys didn’t even mention the alignment everyone’s going to need after doing this. Lol
Isn’t that implied and good measure when doing struts, ball joints, and most all steering modifications?
I cant get the boxwrench in its blocked by the axle. I used tbe open end of the wrench and its not very helpful.
This the same on the 2012 civic si?
When we must change it ?
+Sadque 74 If there is play in the ball joint they should be changed. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com
Great!
For everyone watching this, don't be lazy, take every thing apart so you can torque the ball joint castle nut.
+Rule Andrews Thank you for your feedback!
My castle but spins before Ive torqued it. Is is knackered. ?
