Cloning was a possibility but "secrets only the Sith knew" was just an acknowledgment that there are other methods known only to the Sith. Obviously, Kin was not referring to cloning as something only the Sith knew.

The idea of palpatine returning is kinda dumb to me, both legends and canon, but legends explained his return and his plan a WHOLE LOT better than canon.

The movie barely did the bare minimum of explaining how he’s back. Just vague stuff about dark science and cloning.
From my perspective, Palpatine is like that cockroach who will just refuse to die. Like many Sith before him he had a fear of death and would have made plans given the amount of time he reigned as Emperor to have a backup in the event he died. He also sincerely wanted to reign as Emperor of the Galaxy for eternity with no successor he was that power-hungry. So him coming back to life after his original death in Episode 6 unfortunately would make sense, even if it cheapens Vader/Anakin's sacrifice and breaks the prophecy of Anakin destroying the Sith and bringing balance to the Force. The Chosen One prophecy was a Jedi interpretation anyway, the Force itself had other ideas.
The way Legends carried out the story wasn't perfect, as Palpatine 'died' too many times to make the story interesting. But ultimately Palpatine coming back to life was the way to go, he was too far cunning and intelligent to merely die once and let his whole Empire just collapse afterwards.
He's too dangerous, be alive or dead, hence why all the previous Jedi will make sure he never returns, thus bringing a permanent end to one of the greatest Sith Lords to have ever exist. Unlike gettong destroyed by all the Jedi and coming out of nowhere

I think there should be more legends stuff in canon like the eclipse and the old republic era.
I'd like to clarify that I'm not a hypocrite, Palpatine coming back in this story and in Rise of Skywalker both make no sense and fundamentally ruins Anakin's sacrifice and goes against the idea of the Sith being unable to transcend death.
But at least in this Legends, they explained how Palpatine did this which makes it marginally better than Rise of Skywalker.

It also explains how he came back in rise of skywalker, it just doesnt treat the viewer like a moron by repeatedly saying he's a clone. The resistance are spitballing ideas and one of them says he's likely a clone, this puts the clone idea in the viewer's head. Then when you see Palpatine's lair full of lab equipment and body parts they think back to that scene and realise the resistance soldier was right.

This is my thought process. Matt Smith’s interview shocked fans everywhere, when he said his role was going to change Star Wars lore forever. What everyone who has listened believes, is that Palpatine during the Main Saga, was going to be revealed to be Plagueis the whole time. I like this. So when Palpatine goes to kill Plagueis in legends, Plagueis wakes up. It was said Plagueis didn’t believe in Essence Transfer to be true immortality and he never learned. But I have to believe he did and just didn’t show Palpatine because he didn’t believe that to be the way forward. But he realized during Palpatine killing him he was actually dying and had to improvise. Plagueis wasn’t in control persay but neither was Palpatine. The consciousness was 50/50 because with their matched power, neither was strong enough to fully kill the others spirit. Because of this, Palpatine’s view on the Sith is full of loopholes, like assassins and inquisitors. When Vader killed Palpatine, both spirits were free from the other. In the RoS VD, it explains the room of mirrors (secret room Darth Rey was in) is a secret room where mirrors were enchanted and could view other realities/universes. Palpatine I believe enchanted one and created another universe where he could thrive. This explains why he says “I have died before.” He had to create a whole new universe to be able to regain his consciousness and power. In the core universe, Plagueis was the one that kept coming back in different clone bodies. This makes more sense that he tells Luke “That wasn’t the first time I have died.” Plagueis did die, and technically would have died again on the 2nd Death Star. This also allows Legends and Disney Canon to be both canon going forward which I feel like would regain favor from a lot of fans. While still doesn’t save Anakin’s redemption, It allows more canon material to be brought back into Mainstream.

At least we actually get an explanation here. In TROS we just get: "The Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural." I do like the ROTS callback, but we need a bit more than that, like he's a clone, he tried to rebuild his body but he was too weak and only got 2/3 of the way through. Prequel Memes may be amazing, but you don't just use them as your explanation. If Snoke got an explanation, both a visual and a audible one, then how Papa Palpatine came back from the dead should get one too.

The Rise of Skywalker has taken this from Dark Empire complete with Emperor Sheev Palpatine/Darth Sidious being resurrected via cloning and essence transfer, a planet strong in the Dark Side of the Force (Byss/Exegol), a new Empire openly embracing the Dark Side of the Force/Sith complete with a cult to serve them (Dark Empire and Dark Side Elite/Final Order and Sith Eternal), Palpatine attempting to get a Light Side user/Jedi to join him (Luke Skywalker/Rey), planet-destroying Star Destroyers (Xyston/Conqueror), the Emperor attempting to possess a Force-sensitive (Anakin Solo/Rey), the final death of the Emperor after his last clone body is destroyed and the spirits of the Jedi showing up to stop him and all of this occurring during a big intergalactic conflict (Imperial Civil War-Galactic Civil War/First Order-Resistance war).
The same could also be said of Star Wars: The Old Republic which also featured Sith Emperor Vitiate/Valkorion transferring his essence to a new body and establishing the Eternal Empire on Zakuul in the Unknown Regions which would serve as a springboard for a wider invasion of the galaxy against the Galactic Republic, the Sith Empire, the Chiss Ascendancy and the Mandalorians not to mention him having offspring like the Eternal Twins (Arcann and Thexen) as well as the Eternal Throne, the Knights of Zakuul and his last-ditch effort in possessing the Eternal Commander which fails and he dies.
The big difference however is that Dark Empire shows Luke Skywalker and his friends triumphing over Emperor Sheev Palpatine/Darth Sidious thus ensuring the Jedi Order, the Republic and the Skywalkers would continue on which it did in the Expanded Universe (EU)/"Legends" with the New Jedi Order, the New Republic/Galactic Alliance/Galactic Federation Triumvirate and Jacen Solo/Darth Caedus, Jaina Solo, Anakin Solo, Allana Solo, Ben Skywalker, Nat Skywalker, Kol Skywalker, Cade Skywalker and Ania Solo not counting their spouses/relatives as well as ensure Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader's sacrifice in Return of the Jedi would still mean something over the course of 140 years (10 ABY-140 ABY) it also went much more in depth with how the Emperor was brought back from the dead.
The Rise of Skywalker on the other hand not only undermines Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader's sacrifice but it also came when Snoke the intended Big Bad of the Sequel Trilogy/Disney Trilogy was killed off without any hints as to his backstory and suddenly he's retconned as a puppet of Emperor Sheev Palpatine/Darth Sidious, the whole Final Order/Sith Eternal fleet, the character not even mentioning how he came back from the dead, the Jedi Order, the Republic and the Skywalkers being extinct plus it was a replacement for Duel of the Fates which would have done away this concept and instead seek to put a lot more focus on the cast and characters from the last movie

Something that I'd like to highlight (from another comment, I just wanted to share this), is that in Legends when Palps was killed for the last time and all the Jedi ghosts came to get rid of him, one of them had to have been Anakin, so he STILL technically did his part in the prophecy, just later and with some help.

I loved the Vong. It presented a truly diabolical and powerful threat that even the galaxy's most powerful warriors couldn't fight well. It almost destroyed the whole galaxy and shaped the Old Canon timeline for years to come.

This story was flawed but at least it's better than TROS.
In my opinion, they both weren't favorable, though this does remind me of the same situation as X-Men Dark Pheonix (film). They tried to follow and improve the original attempt of X-Men: The Last Stand, but resulted in something that was equally as bad, maybe worse.

For me, the idea of bringing Palpatine back itself is baffling whether it be Legends or Disney sequels. It makes the sacrifice and the turn of Vader to Anakin completely worthless.
To be honest, I love the aesthetic choice for making Palpatine look somewhat like Dracula.

It is proof of Palpatine's power and obsession with it and immortal life. I think it built on his character tremendously outside what very little we saw of him in the original movies. His appearance in the original movies did not do his character justice. Personally, I liked it and I plan on purchasing the copies with the Legends banner when they are released.

I hear a lot of people say that Palpatine coming back makes Vader’s sacrifice useless, it does NOT. Without Darth Vader’s sacrifice Luke would’ve died. And the empire wouldnt have suffered such a major blow. Yes I agree it lessens the impact but it still is important.

Common misconception, Vader didn't sacrifice himself to kill Palpatine, the whole point was that he returned from the light, assume he died fighting Palpatine with Luke, would people still call that meaningless? Of course they would, but it was never the point, it's that Vader is now Anakin.
Fair enough, but Palpy coming back also takes away from the idea that Sith can't prevent themselves from dying. Escaping death by becoming a force ghost was an ability restricted to the light side. IIRC a person could only became a ghost through a selfless desire to guide those still alive and they had to be willing to accept death. It was ironic because eternal life could only be obtained by giving up the desire to live forever, and that's why the Sith could never do that. If Palpatine is able to resurrect himself that whole idea goes away.

If Anakin was the chosen one then Palpatine's return is taking a dump all over the prophecy of the chosen one. Which was bringing balance to the force by getting rid of the Sith in most desperate of times. If Palpatine can come back then how is Anakin's possible prophecy fulfilled? The guy whose death is essential for having balance in the force didn't die!
Although the two story points were never meant to be connected, I always thought of it this way... Transfer essence may be as close as Palpatine got to Darth Plagueis's anti-death abilities. Which IF this was a canon ability, would have meant that he lied to Anakin before anointing him Darth Vader. He DID know how to cheat death. This is why the Dark Empire series you refer to in the video isn't compatible with the canon timeline. But it's a good story, especially Luke willingly let himself be turned just to understand the Dark Side and how to defeat it. It helped build Luke's backstory as a Jedi Master and lent further creedence to how he had an uncanny ability to convince dark force users to renounce their own wickedness.
Plagius never got anywhere beyond the testing phase of his anti-death powers. In legends only one force user has ever gained the power to prevent death. Cade Skywalker Anakin's descendent who has a force ability that does just that.
People are saying this is a bad story, but while I havent read it, it doesnt seem that bad. For one, its perfectly in character for someone like Palpatine to have backup plans like this. When you consider that his old master apparently had the ability to transcend death (necromancy? Its never fully specified), which is one of the things Palpatine admired, he would most certainly learn as much as he could about it and use it to his advantage in case of an untimely death (ROTJ). Luke turning shows he had flaws, but ultimately he was shown to learn from them and come back to the light, unlike canon Luke whose sole existence in the sequel is to die and set up the new protagonists.

Came back to this now that the Episode 9 trailer dropped and shocked us all.
they're pulling a damn dark empire...
I can see Palpatine coming back to life in Legends has some pros and cons- so I'll try going over them step by step.
Let me start this off by saying this. Everyone loves Sidious. He's one of the best and most brilliantly conceived villains in the series next to Vader, and is by far one of the most recognisable characters in the franchise. To have him claim the title as the most powerful Sith Lord in the history of the Star Wars universe and then demonstrate it through not only his intelligence and fighting abilities, but also his use of the Force and ability to cheat death, is a really solid way of cementing him in that seat of power.
Balance in the Force. A balance between Light and Dark. Day and Night. Good and Evil. During the Republic's Reign, there were over ten thousand Jedi spread out across the galaxy doing their work- spreading hope and protecting the galaxy. That's ten thousand force users on the side of the light. And to oppose them, aside from the witches of Dathomir and other dark side groups from Legends, there are the two Sith- a Master and Apprentice. In order to combat the strength of the light, Sideous- and with the extension of his apprentices- became the embodiment of the Dark Side of the Force- all of the dark side manifested in him and being manipulated through the master of the Sith Order. Him eventually rising to the seat of political power and then wiping out almost all of the jedi across all of the galaxy, threw the galaxy- and by extension the force- out of balance, with most of the light being snuffed out. Taking this into consideration, as well as the years Palpatine spent plotting to destroy the Jedi Order and increase his power, I wouldn't be surprised if the man had a few aces up his sleeve- especially if things went south.
Now, the Chosen One was stated to bring balance to the Force by destroying the Sith (as Obi-Wan quoted). Anakin was said to be that Chosen One- and both the movies and the Clone Wars series confirmed this fact to be true. After Vader threw Palpatine over the Death Star's reactor and killed him, Vader/Anakin did in fulfil the prophecy by destroying the Sith and bringing balance to the Force once more. The Empire's hold of the galaxy started to crumble and Anakin's son, Luke, was able to bring the Jedi back into existence- in other words the light.
However, in order to maintain balance, the dark side will resurface once again to keep to the status quo. Amidst his crumbling Empire, Palpatine returned stronger than ever, to combat the Jedi once more. Yet Luke managed to defeat him- and amidst his death throes and his final, crumbling, dying clone body, the Skywalker family in its entirety were able to put the desperate Sideous down once and for all.
Overall, I find Palpatine's rise and fall to be both epic and frustrating- epic because it showed the journey of the franchise's biggest bad guy and the galaxy's greatest threat being halted at every turn, while his inability to just die permanently had me cursing him at the same time- but in a good way. However, I can see why some people would be upset.
Palpatine coming back after Vader kills him makes Vader's sacrifice seem kind of meaningless- and a lot of people tend to agree with this notion. However, I don't think it's as black and white as that.
Even though Sideous eventually resurrected himself, it doesn't detract from Vader's actions or sacrifice in the slightest. Not at all. In fact, not only do I see Vader once again finding his strength to finally and literally cast aside the dark side in the form of his master once and for all, but in an ironic and very karma-like twist, Palpatine was able to live through his failure to possess the Skywalker bloodline and reep the seeds that he sewed, as all his best laid plans AND back up plans were slowly, surgically and methodically picked apart and torn down one after the other. To see the once most powerful and feared being in the galaxy being reduced to the withered up, husk of a man he'd become in the comic above, and then being dragged kicking and screaming to hell by all the departed Jedi he'd murdered years ago, I think is a fitting end for a monster like him- so desperate to cling to life that he would resort to chasing after the family he'd tried so hard to own and use to his own, selfish ends.
Sure, all of the Legends stories were written by multiple authors. But you know what, it's these multiple authors- FANS of the original Star Wars trilogy in their own right- who knew Star Wars best and how the story should be told in between the movies and after. Timothy Zhan proved this, and so did so many others. That's what made the Extended Universe so great!
But now that the franchise has fallen into the hands of Disney- an organisation run by businessmen and businesswomen with their own political agendas and interests- the entire series has fallen flat on its face- and all the great legends we once knew created by fans, for the fans, and beloved by fans, has been cast into the same, black abyss Palpatine has been sent to.
And you know what, I have a sneaking suspicion the same thing is going to happen to him in this last movie- but with less taste. In fact, I foresee it... lol

Personally, I think this is a far better ending for Palpatine than his 'death' on the second death star. He was a massive figurehead in Star Wars mythos and deserved far more.

This would explain why Palpatine cared so much about Anakin. Not him, but his body. He then realized that no point in soul transference since Anakin is half machine, but had a apprentice who couldn't touch him, and no threat in the galaxy. Perhaps this was a better outcome. Perhaps Anakin too damaged to take a part of dna, so that's why he was so excited to hear about Luke.
Wow... So Lucas films could have still gone with the strong female lead they always wanted in the form of Leia taking up her brother's mantle and rescuing him, but instead they went the Mary Sue option and made Luke even worse
I like this story better than the last Jedi, I really don’t see the problem with this.

LOL @ all the people shitting on the Dark Empire storyline, despite it making sense on different levels:
1) Palpatine has cloning tech.
2) Palpatine is a strong Force user who can manifest as a ghost. Just like Vader did.
3) A ghost can possess a body, so naturally Palpatine would create clones of himself for his spirit to possess.
Before you idiots attack the storyline, at least read the damn thing first. It's actually a pretty good story once you got down to reading it.
Oh, and by the way, IT WAS GEORGE LUCAS WHO CREATED THIS STORYLINE. The original makers of Dark Empire wanted a Vader impersonator. Lucas shot down the idea and told them to resurrect the Emperor instead.

Even though the overall concept of bringing back Palpatine is actually pretty stupid, at least they went all out with the concept and put as much effort and passion into it as possible. They give an explanation, a pretty cool story arc, and they did everything they could to make the idea work. And for all that hard work they put in, I’d say they succeeded.
Meanwhile, with The Rise of Skywalker, the filmmakers just used the concept as an excuse to finish an already f*cked film trilogy and ended up creating one of the worst conclusions to anything in fictional and cinematic history! F*ck you Disney!

It sucks so much that his body starts to deteriorate rapidly after transfering his essence over to his cloned bodies, cursed to live as an old man even after getting a new body. The dark side has its cool aspects, but it sucks overall.
This is the one legends story that is always the one to gets a lot of flak, I understand the reasons some might hate it. For me personally I enjoyed the story greatly sure there are some thing that disagree with, I mostly hated the fact that the empire just kept pulling a new super weapon out of their ass. I have no problems with Palps coming back to life as it shows him in his prime somewhat.
The reason they showed him continuously resurrecting was to show that if they did not stop him some way, he would never cease. It made the importance of his imprisonment much more urgent. This story is one of my favorites, as it shows just how great the lengths Palpatine would go to keep his power. And just how powerful he was.

At least Legends Luke came back to the light and admitted to his mistakes, becoming a better person for it. 'Canon' Luke only came back at the very end after wallowing in his own misery for years, and just died without any opportunity to show how much he learnt from his mistakes.

HERE HERE!! Legends is so much better because it makes far more more sense. It also shows consistency with all 6 episodes. The original was carefully tailored by George Lucas while Disney's timeline is made only for show.

In the Yuzang Vong wars my head sequels are set but Luke Skywalker and Mara Jade fell in love and got married around the same time Han Solo and Leia Organa got married and Luke and Mara had a daughter and their child is in her late teens to early 20s a bit older than her causin Anakin Solo but younger than her other cousins Jacen and Jaina Solo
In episode 7 in 25 ABY shes a Jedi padawan trains under her father Luke and her oldest cousin Jacen who will also be in love with her throughout the trilogy but personality wise she much like Luke in some way but different in other ways, she has Lukes old blue lightsaber as was Anakins before him and now hers force potential wise when she was in her mother Maras womb she was able to lift firnacher shed be born in 9 ABY so shell be 1 year old in Dark Empire and Darth Sidious will try to posses her not Anakin Solo kinda like Vaylin was described but Lukes daughter would have the same force potential, physically shed be muscular, her first love intrest would be Ken Palpatine the Grandson of Darth Sidious (and Ken has his grandfathers red lightsaber from Episode 3 and now his) while Lukes daughter herself being the Granddaughter of Darth Vader by blood and Padme Amidala she succedes at what she does in that movie and the Yuzang Vong invade shes kicking the assas of the Vong and successful for the rest of the movie but in episode 8 in 28 ABY she goes through some hard lessons geting her ass kicked and facing a Vong leader whos the main villain in the trilogy so they have a lighsaber dual for a time but she gets disarmed by her lightsaber getting kicked out of her hand and the Vong leader burns half of her face with the snake like weapon but she survives and falls of a clift with her lightsaber and lands through some trees and on the ground and is ok and she found by Jacen and he carrys her and her lightsaber back to Luke and she'll be in the bacta tank then when she awakens to C3PO and R2D2 and Luke, Mara, Jacen then Jacen kisses her on the mouth as shes laying down then shes smiling feeling like a woman and got her first kiss shed disobeyed orders in the movie but in the end of the movie Luke told his daughter that she did the right thing after she stands with Ken after they left the room and in episode 9 in 29 ABY now more mature she will still disobey orders but mean well as she did in the previous 2 movies, at the end shed fight the Vong leader and defeat him but wouldn't kill him but says hes defeated and walks away but he attackes her and gets his staff and kickes her to the ground and beata her and the Vong leader takes off her clothes and rapes her after the assault ends Luke would see the Vong Sexually assaulting his daughter is enraged andgets into a lightsaber dual with him and defeates him just like his daughter did and decided not to kill him but tells him he never wants to see him again however (tho she doesn't get pregnant by anyone until shes impregnated by her cousin Jacen later on in the second Galactic Civil war with his child her and Jacen Solos daughter) and the Vong leader sees Ken and stabs him in the chest and Ken kills him by shocking him with purple sith force lightning just like his grandfather Emporor Palpatine and frys him but dies from a blood loss and Ken Palpatine and Lukes daughter whos a Skywalker shares their last words of love then Ken dies ending the Palpatine bloodline and Luke tells his daughter hes so sorry, Luke and his daughter leave and bary Ken but she keeps his red lightsaber with the same synthetic crystal the former Emporor had for years in his life as with her own blue lightsaber with that same kyber crystal her grandfather Anakin got when he contructed it in 29 BBY he was just 13 and her father Luke was handed by Obi Wan Kenobi in 0 BBY when he was 19 and it be her lightsaber for the rest of her life and they leave in the melenium falcon with her mother Mara, her aunt Leia and her uncle Han and it ends there.
Shed eventually as a force ghost give hers, her father Lukes and her grandfather Anakins blue lightsaber to her decendent Cade Skywalker and tell him where to find it and after he pickes it up she appears again and says her lightsaber is now his.

Maybe he felt, but because it was "raw" and untrained, he didn't care
There will always be force sensitives in the Star Wars Universe so he thought she was just another but if she was trained like Starkiller said, he didn't care.
As mentioned, since Leia was untrained and didn't consciously tap into the force, there prolly was little to no "force signature" or "prescence" unlike say Obi Wan and Luke

Lucas wrote this off as acceptable yet he wants to claim Vader (really Luke's persuasion) killed the Sith for good, and removed a large influence of the Dark Side. Yet, Palpatine comes back showing that not just the Sith legacy, but that a Sith Lord can be immortal, too.

palpatines legends timeline is so much more interesting than in canon but dont really thing he should come back in cannon unless its in a flashback in the new poe dameron comics or something

Everyone needs to keep in mind that Dark Empire predates the prequels by like a decade, as far as anyone at the time knew Anakin Skywalker was just a skilled starfighter pilot with a strong connection to The Force not some Messiah that’s Prophesied to bring balance and I’m gonna be honest I prefer that to what we got with the prequels (even if I love them).
