  • After a really nice flight - I returned home to find the winds had gotten even more gusty than before departing. This was unforecasted winds twice as strong as the glider's demonstrated crosswind. It was supposed to be 150@20kts when I returned, Well within limits.
The reality was 120@20G25kts at Vero Beach. Vero Beach was landing 12R.
By the time the crosswind issue was identified - lift had died and gliding to a field with more favorable direction was no longer possible. Doh! I tried to hang in and stay aloft and "hold" and await more favorable winds or gain some altitude and glide to Vero Beach, but it just wasn't in the cards.

Nice work! Handy having the 'ol taxi engine in the back...

It sure helps when everyone from the club said it wasn't any good to go soaring that morning. I finished getting ready to go and the clubs hanger had just been shut. At that time it was 20-25 but right down the runway. When I got home - 120@20G25 for 18. Not ideal, and wasn't forecast. I considered going to Vero Beach which has runway 12 available to me... But by the time I considered it I was far too low to make it the 6 miles into the 20kt headwind.
