This gives you a glimpse of how the Stans are born. Eminem is an open book. He shows you exactly who he is and we got to see him grow through his music. It’s not the same blind hero worship some have for some other celebrities (although there may be some of them in the ranks I don’t know) but it’s about him showing us who followed his career all this time how he has evolved. He took us along with him on his journey, through his lyrics, interviews, videos. That’s how we can shut down haters with such a sense of authority hahaha. 🤣
This song hits me hard my mom isn’t around she is heavy and reliant on pills so sometimes I cry to it thinking she will change. Me and my dad are closer than me and my mom which I kinda hate. Yep i know how you feel all my life alcohol was more important than me the bar and guys were and still are more important than me. She even said i was a mistake to my face that hurts and haunts me till this day. So this song hits me hard too. I'm in tears as i listen to this. The maturity of Em as both a rapper and a person.
Cleaning Out My Closet: Still to this day one of the tracks that a lot of people see as Em's most "personal" track. It really touched the root of his anger in his family, his life AND in himself. It was a rapper going "behind the curtain" and showing the man behind the mic as a human being, not as just an entertainer. And it is one where you can hear that "anger of youth" in him. Not just by what he said, but HOW he said it in regards to the inflection of his voice and intensity. It clearly showed that he had a large amount of "built up frustration" inside of him about a ton of issues that weren't properly dealt with at the time they happened NOR as time passed.
Headlights: Again, one of the tracks that a lot of people see as Em's most "personal" track to day. Yet, this time, instead of the "anger of youth" it is the "regret of maturity". Not entirely regretting what was said WHEN it was said, meaning he doesn't regret doing Cleaning out My Closet AT THE TIME HE DID IT. But he DOES regret the impact that song had on him, again, both as a person and an entertainer. It was a big song in his career at the time, and night after night he would have to go out on stage and sing the song, constantly drumming up the same feelings inside of him to do so. And yet, as time moved on and different songs entered the rotation at his concerts, he was able to put that anger aside and realize that there is more to life than just anger of youth. And now, as he looks back on things, he truly regrets that his relationship with his mother wasn't as close as it could, should or would, have been if they were able to address the underlying issues between the two of them. Now, he knows that they can't be "close" like they want to be as mother and son, but there is no need (or desire) to be HOSTILE to each other. And that alone is a massive step forward in their relationship to bridge a lot of the divide between the two of them over all the years.
I bring this up because this is the type of relationship that I have with my older brother. We will NEVER be "close" to each other. And I honestly believe that we both know this about each other. Yet, when we have to be near each other, we can both avoid being hostile. It makes it easier to get along for "short periods of time", but there are still too many issues between us to be together for "long periods of time". And the "short times" can be longer and longer the LESS we are hostile to each other.
Maturity. It isn't just "growing older". It is "growing WISER" and understanding BOTH yourself and the situations that brought you to where you are in life. AND being able to address them directly without having to hide how you feel about it in the process. And with Headlights, we truly saw an "entertainer" mature in front of our eyes that you RARELY see in real-life, let alone by a "celeb" doing their craft.
It took many years for me to get to a place of neutrality with my Dad. I can’t allow him to make me happy or sad or mad. And like Em says, thank you for being my parent, you did the best you could, but I do have to love you from afar. To protect my heart and my children’s hearts. Love to you, buddy. You’re a great dad!

Em is the realest, on top of his mad musicality, connection to injustice, while bringing his truth in every song, brilliant in lyrics, flow and rhythm, while battling an industry that was against him from the beginning. This man is blood sweat tears and growth in one sentence

Coming from a tumultuous upbringing myself I've always understood EM and his actions. To this day my younger brother still acts like the younger EM.
EM had to do those tracks, it was pivotal in his healing process. Not everyone can do the therapist thing especially when trusting others is such a problem. The two people in life who are suppose to protect and hurt you the most it's hard to trust everyday people enough to open up. He will probably always have trust issues towards women( my brother also still this way in his 30's) because the #1 woman and first woman in a mans life crushed him.
Those tracks provided therapy and a healthy way to express his rage without holding it in and blowing up.
Now the drugs and alcohol and rage have subsided and he's been through the addiction he knows what had a hold of hs mama. Kinda hard to keep that rage and not feel a whole new world of shattered from guilt. Broken people can't fix each other without taking each other down! I adore EM and the "knowledge" you speak of is what most of us survivors do, you look for answers in every book and you become a recluse to shield yourself.
I myself went 10 1/2 years without speaking to my father, 4 yrs ago I let him back in my life, except I am mature enough now to love my dad and remember who I'm dealing with.
Call your mama because you want and need it emotionally for yourself, not because of an emotional moment because it's easy to feel sadness from someone elses experience and match their guilt with yours. It's not the same and you won't be ready! Be ready and strong enough to make that call.
I always say I have no regrets for the way I was raised because that made me the parent I am! That I thank my parents for .
So no matter how many times I listen to this song I cry every time. It hits to close to home not just like on the block but directly on the roof.

Long ass story...My grandma was pregnant with my uncle at 15, with my dad at 17. Their dad married her to “make an honest woman of her” (it was the 50s). He stuck around till my dad was about 5. Then he went on to have some other kids wit some other women. Fast forward, he tried connecting wit his dad when I was a baby. They talked on the phone. His dad told him he was afraid my dad would punch him square in the face if he saw him, & said it would b justified. My dad said “no, I jus want to talk & thought you’d like to meet ur new granddaughter.” They even set a date & time to meet at the motel where his dad was staying. When my dad showed up (with me), he knocked & knocked. My dad heard movement inside. My grandpa never answered. Dad found out later that my grandpa told a family member that he was too chicken & felt he didn’t deserve to c us. Sadly now his dad has long passed. I know my dad is haunted by never getting a chance to talk to his dad again (tho not from lack of trying). My dads childhood fucked him up (my grandma wasn’t easy to live with). He has demons...passed a few on to me. I love him cause he’s my dad, but we do have an awkward relationship at times. But, he is a good grandpa to my kids. And I make it a point to not pass on my demons to my kids. So I’m doin my best to break the cycle.

My dad did the same to me and my brothers. I was 5 when he bounced. Never saw him again and i found out he died a year ago. I hated myself for being devastated about it. I was mourning something that i never had, but at the same time i knew there was never gonna be a chance for me to talk to him, to ask him why... Why he didnt love me enough. How can any parent not realize the shattering effect this has on a child??? I have 2 kids, and i agree, i would do anything for them.
I fought and went to jail 4 times for violation of restraining orders and 10 years in courts trying to get a visitation schedule but ultimately had to give up rights because I became disability and couldn't live on 250 a month.
Every single one of us heard this song and went and called our mamas and told them we loved them. Anyone who didn't doesn't have a heart.
Eminem forever has my respect for putting it on wax and saying "I was wrong, I'm sorry" in the most public way he knows how for one of the songs that catapulted him to huge media success. For him to come out and say "I wish I never did that, I disown that song" is a big big thing. It shows that he has grown as a person, and he's learned to let go of his anger and replace it with love. I think being a parent taught him that trying to make it alone in the situation his mama was in put the stress on her that turned her to substance abuse. He lived the same life she did, repeated her mistakes. He was just lucky enough to catch it and turn it around.
You have to respect that journey, and respect his willingness to share it with everyone.
