PlayList of all my 3D Printing Video's: goo.gl/FKD0Tq
I bought an XBOX 360 Kinect camera for $10 on Craigslist and was able to scan myself in high detail, then printed the 3D model off on my 3D printer. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. This is the best thing i have printed yet.
In this video i try to go step-by-step with how you can do the same thing. From buying the camera, downloading the drivers and software, how to scan and use the program, cleanup and print.
Make sure you download the KinectSDK Drivers. www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...
I used Skanect to do the scanning, instead of ReconstructMe. skanect.occipital.com/
I used Sculptris to fix any holes in the scanned 3D model. pixologic.com/sculptris/
Then printed it off with my MP Select Mini 3D printer.

I have an Xbox Kinect and was just starting to do the research for using it for 3d Scanning and I'm glad I came across your video! You did a great job of covering everything to go from installing drivers to getting a 3d printer ready object. Awesome job!
Now you can be yourself in Monopoly! Thanks 2017!
Awesome! I could listen to you for hours... Thank you very much and best regards from Ankara/Turkey
Thank you Dave. It's complete, helpful and pretty instructive in details. I just discovered your great channel. It's inspiring.
Thank you so much,I'm getting my 3d printer today and I'm so excited my first 3d printer and I have no idea where to start never done 3d printing before and never had interest until now, thanks again for the great video
very informative, Dave. You could have eliminated the need for using Scruptress to fill in the holes if you had done a more thorough job of scanning yourself, moving the scanner vertically to cover under the chin and on top of the head.
Thanks! I have my first print coming up right now! Only took about 10 minutes. Nice walkthrough.
Thanks for this, just found it and now using my old Kinect! Nice video!
I believe the grey cable is literally just an extension cable to make the cable longer so not needed for this purpose. I have several laying around with other Xbox stuff.
Yeah its an extension only...
@@Outofthedust Tried without and doesn't work. Only works with
@@martinxp2535 it works without it
Good job. You explained very well, especially because i am French and i understood EVERTTHING. Again BRAVO
I used the Skanect free version but I found that the STL export had a very visible mesh. I bought a PRO license and found that an export with 50,000 polygons in PRO results in a much better quality.
Export the object size in millimeters gives an accurate object size in mm usable to create duplicates with a fair match to the original.
this may help you if you are using the free version of skanet you can import the file in meshlabs and fix it up it would look almost the same as he did
Cool walk-through. Thanks!
Dave for smaller objects you could use an old record player, you could slow the speed down
Thanks man, that was really helpful!
i found your video very interesting, i personally make bitmaps which can be used in 3D
Agisoft Photoscan or Autodesk ReCap works fine. From any cam. The info with 123 Catch is way outdated.
Thanks, for this. It really helped me get started.
watched the video and then watched again while I tried. Helped a lot. Have to get better with chair but not bad. Unfortuantely have to buy the Pro version to get higher faces than 5000
It's worth noting that the PRO version of Skanect that you are using costs $130, especially considering how much you stress that your scanner only costs $10.
$130 and it works really sketchy? No thanks.
Is he using the Pro version in the video or the free one?
Awesome upload ive just bought a kinect from ebay gotta wait a week till it arrives but this is great info
Did not even relise you could do this with an xbox kinnect great video ...👍😉
Awesome Video! I want to try this now, maybe I can finally get some use out of my Xbox One Kinect. As of now its mainly used as a door stop.
did it work?
Awesome! Did you do this with the free versions of the software or the pro versions?
Very cool!! it worked!! Thanks Dave!
this is awesome for a 3d scan and print guide. very well done please do more I'm subbed. 😊 have you had any luck scanning small items with kinect? I can't scan anything small I want to scan 6inch high items.
Hi Dave,
Thank you.
if you're printing on a dlp printer (a liquid resin printer like the anycubic photon) you want the detail and quality to be as high as possible. its not as important with fdm fillament printing because that process is usually pretty low detail
Great tutorial. Very informative and thanks.
Great presentation THANK YOU very much.
Nicely done- thanks!
this is amazing - thank you!
Great, your video is very practical
Great vid. Thanks for the help.
work perfect!!!!! all graet , BIG THANKS
I'm seeing more of the kinect at goodwill every day.
U go to GoodWill everyday?
@@michaelmundie1590 just about. I live within a mile of the largest Goodwill and it's here in Seattle on Dearborn. Sometimes I find a great deal or more, some days are dry runs.
muchas gracias amigo exelente video
So if you will do muving/rotaityng around platform:) it will benefit your scan?
Thank you! Grait video!
Hi thanks for this Video .. And it Works fine .. I use windows 10 a Nvidia GTX 1080 and a Intel I7 ..And i use the Skanect 1.9. But first i installed ths SDK 1.8 importend !! And a hint you can plugin you Kinect Sensor without this grey cable. !!
For the benefit of those who may have read the comments below, you can download a free version of the non-commercial Skanect software.
But it only exports files under 5000 poligons, no detail at all.
Very informative. Thanks for sharing!
you a black dude? have you tried this and it worked ? did you have to call NAACP to step in?
Thank you for sharing
thank!! I learn a lot.
Good job, man
20:00 use meshmixer its mouch better and still easy and also native stl files support
Hello Dave, thanx for the upload. Do you know if Skanect works with the Xbox One?
WOW/ Thanks so much. This is so much simpler. Way to kill the learning curve and get more people into it.
Thanks for explain! Now I bought a Kinect @ Amazon and will try :)
Hello Robin,
Did you have a chance to try? Does it work good?
Great walkthrough, I appreciate it!
Awsome info Dude
Thank you for this very helpful video. I appreciate the step by step instructions.
great video mate.........
Very good .... thank you!!!!
I was just browsing the web to find out if Skanect works for my type of scanning (on a rotary table) and found this video.
This is a very nice and detailed video and worth watching all 27 minutes!
I just ordered a used Kinect 360 for 20 EUR so I will see in a few days if this works 😀
YES! It took me a bit more than 27 minutes to install all software and make my first scan but with this video this was an easy job 👍
It will take me a few scans, hours or days to find the best scan quality but this is very promising.
rumblfmp How did the scanning process work for you after all?
See my reaction below. It may take a few tries to get a good scan but this is still fairly easy to do. I also tested an Occipital Structure sensor with Skanect. That one works faster, has less errors (so less scans before a good quality scan is made) but it is also way more expensive.
For the occasional scan-for-fun use nothing beats the Kinect.
the grey adapter is just an extention cable.
core 4 is slacking...
#4 You are fired!
Cool video, subbed.
Cool video! Question off topic, Where did you get the cabinet for your mini select?
Built it: ruclips.net/video/6NJk8Kgl7oY/видео.html
At your point I would change my cura settings to get better results.(two years later lol)
3:22 This shit into the computer ;)
Hi, works kinect 360 with skanect on windos 10?
would the v2 kinnect for the xbox one yield better results?
Do you think this would work with a laptop?
Can you add the model number for the Kinect? Thanks
good and this nice thank you
I takeout that the doesn't work on a Mac?
Is there a working alternative for Linux?
Hi there , my Kinect doesnt work anymore, could this be because of a Windows update?
Go Spartans. Thanks for the video.
Good for game asset creation.
not really... the mesh is to high poly, the typology is bad and unrig-able
@dave Yeah, it kind of sucks that you are using the $129 version of the software. The free non-commercial version limits the export and the results are disappointing to say the least. I wish that was obvious at the start...
exactly, im not sure why he didt mention that
I tried kinect driver 1.8 & 1.7 but still didnt work, my i7 pc is not detecting the kinect sensor.,
thank you
Wow thanks
Thanks
The kinect is one of the most picky things I've ever plugged into windows. Update your bios, all system drivers from board manufacturer, then in Device Manager, right click on the kinect and update drivers there too. Finally got this POS to work on my dell laptop. Not working though on the MSI Z170A pc I built. Good luck.
mine was pretty much plug and play
Would be nice to make a real size model for parents memories and make it a business. What do you think about it?
Ya I think there are companies based on that. But they have a bunch of cameras set up and take the image instantly. The kinect is a cheaper approach, and more difficult to get a kid to sit still for 2 minutes while you scan them.
Kinect just $10? I'm going to buy a 3d scanner kit with kinect. Can you suggest me what i need to buy? Suggestion will be appreciated.
Hello,
May I borrow your pro Version of Skanect ?
Does the second gen connect from the xbox one still work? You showed it but, wasnt clear whether that would work.
As long as you can connect it to your computer via USB it should work!
do we have a linux software for this?
Hi guys, nice video @Dave , quick question , Will I have a problem if use a kinect model 1414 instead an 1473?
Not sure, i just know that the early model/version works. perhaps the later kinect's work too?
Great !! , thanks man
U don't need the grey extender it just a extender
Which is the free program?
It just wont work, probably a bad connection. The Kinect disconnects itself every 2 seconds without event touching it. I can't get it to work more than one sec in windows
I had that issue - Turned out I had it connected a USB 2.0 when it needs a USB 3.0 connection.
Same has anyone fixed this issue!!?!
Does any one know if this works with a usb-c adapter to mac?
wonder if there a linux port..
Scan yourself with the camera moving around you....that way the software uses the background as a reference for better stitching.....
how to plug in the xbox 360 kinect?
it has got a kind of usb or displayport look and it is orange but my pc hasnt got a place where to plug it in please HELP!
You need a splitter/an adapter which is shown at 2:55
Free Skanect only gives 5000 faces on STL. Way to rugged for use imo.
Great
very thx
should i use processing on mac? or what are the mac alternatives?
Not sure, never owned a mac. But it should work as long as it's a somewhat powerful computer that can do the processing.
You don't need that grey USB extension.
hi have you tried thw xbox one knect? if so which is better?
No i just have the old one in the video.
New one might be better quality??
I wish this video had more commercials.
fine picture of motorcycles on wall
man, you talk so clear about installation but its getting my nerves. i already installed 50 times different sdk, runtime, etc etc and i cant make this thing work. in device manager i can see sometimes one or another part of kinect and in the end it just goes to hidden devices and not installed or installed as unknown. do you have any idea or video how to properly install this device? im sure it will be a success in yt because there is any that i can find. im using win7 pro and in another pc also win7 i was able to connect kinect only for scanning but not as webcam or it cant be recognized using kinect drivers only primesense. please share your opinion. cheers
Forget my last. Operator error. 4 hours of operator error. Ugh!
Is it 1:1 scale once your done scanning your head?
you can scale it to whatever you want. when i import it into my slicer program it's tiny, then i scale it up so that it's about 50mm high.
did you also download Kinect for Windows Developer Toolkit v1.8
Ya i probably did, i tried a bunch of stuff to try and get it to connect. Not 100% sure though.
