3:13 The FRQ or Frequency settings makes changes to the actual lighting effects. For example. If you turn on the Party/Disco effects, you can change the frequency to alter the effect to change colors more quickly (such as at a rave), or more slowly, such as at a children's birthday party. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the review! There almost nothing on RUclips about these Smallrig products. I ordered yesterday the 55 cm softbox for pet photography. I want something portable and small.
Clicked on the video immediately looking for this comment… Aputure has a whole family of lights, so they integrate well together too in terms of matching color
I bought this light for $143 on eBay brand new in the case so for that price I didn't see anything even close in quality. I would recommend this light for anyone on a tighter budget
Confused between this and the Godox ML60bi. I like the metal housing of the Godox ML60BI. How is the plastic housing quality of the Smallrig 120B ? Long term durability ?
I’m a filmmaker and I shoot music video and some commercial ads but I’ve done everything without having lights. Would the 120b or 220b be best for me? This will be my first lighting purchase and want to make the best choice
The comparison with the Aputure Amaran line would also be helpful...because other than Godox, the Amaran line is also a close competitor in terms of build/price/features...but as of right now it seems that power output for Smallrig is only available at 150W while the Amaran is 100 and 200...
Is the light being bicolor really a big deal when you can just gel? Then you also get a brighter daylight output as well. Genuinely curious as I’m in the market for a 220 light and I’m thinking to save $100 and just use my gels if I need 3200k
I have $500 to spend on a midrange, preferably bicolor, bowens mount light. I have the rc120d and like it but want something with more punch if I have to shoot outdoors or against harsh natural light. What should I get?
I have been looking at this light as well. I need a new COB light for some work. Are you really going to replace your VL150 with this one? Any concerns with the Bowden mount and durability? Lightweight is good, but when mounting a 90cm softbox, a little extra weight might be needed to keep the light from tipping.
Great hands-on review. Thank you. I'm getting two of these. Would you advise getting the 55cm or 85cm soft box, or one of each, for a three-point lighting setup? (I have a smaller light for the hairlight) I expect to use them mostly for interview type setups (max two people).
85cm for key and 55 for hair light. I usually try to get even bigger for the key but that light might just not be strong enough for it. There are stronger smallrig lights out now though that I will Reviews next month 😉
@@damiencooper Thank you for that advice :) I was thinking 85cm for key light (softer effect) but was worried if the 120b is powerful enough. Good to know it is 👍 One of each feels right. 55 for hairlight? Or for fill? I know the Smallrig 220 and 450 are out now, and I'd get the 220 if I could, but there are so many bits of needed kit always fighting for attention. lol. Have to "trim the cloth"... 🙈
@@barryfinbar yeah it is. I use a 85cm softbox with the 120b for all of my latest talking heads. Hairlight works well, used it on some commercial shoots. Fill light me be a bit harsh, but I also don't use fill that often
Do you still have 120B? Seems Smallrig silently updated their firmware and introduced SILENT mode + improved fan control. Are you able to update us on this? I wonder what is the silent mode powe threshold.
@@saintwolfvision get the Amaran then. Their mesh BT works like a charm. They also got 150C, but I'm not sure it got the same thermal design as 300C. If so should be silent up to 20-25%. I got now 3 Amaran lights and I can steer them all with the app on my phone, which is amazing.
The FRQ is to control the effects (speed and interval). 🤦🏻♂️
Nice! Think i'm going on this for my first professional light. For the price and quality. Nice review!

I’ve been waiting for this one!
This light is dope, i’m gonna get one 👌🏽
Thanks for the heads up, seems like a cost effective buy!👍🏾🙏🏾

For about $80.00 more, you can get Amaran 200x Bi-Color LED Light. Much better light in every way.

Doesnt have V-Mount slate tho...
@@popcornviews I use VAGABOND MINI to power mine. The battery lasts longer than any vmount battery.
In what ways? I'm trying to decide on my first light.

absolutely.. Unfortunately, I have never used the aputures and the Smallrig seems to also sit right in the middle

Get the rc220b
Is this usable as a studio light for photography (assuming you buy at least 2)?
I didn't see the info where to purchase the battery for the light you have that info also nice video
Would this light be suitable for photography?
I have the Vl150, Can you mix the small rig and the vl150? Is there mixed light problems?
Great video

I have been replacing it and use it for all the youtube videos now with a 90cm softbox. Absolutely no issues or regrets so far
hi! what is the luts you used on this video?
thank you very much :-)
Bluebird from one of my lut packs
Thank you man! this is great tho!
Hey another great review, what camera did you shoot this on? Thanks for all the info.
talking head and b-roll is the C70, the lightformers vloggy part is the R5C

is it very quiet
@@saintwolfvision I got Amaran 300C. It's forever silent up to 10% and 10-15% for ~20 minutes, when fan kicks in and is still very silent.

Awesome! Have you been able to check out Smallrig's new video tripod? AD-01 3751. They seem to be expending and making some quality esential items!
Is the light battery operated? I’m not sure if I heard you say whether it was or not.
It is. You can get a vmount plate for it. Showed it in the video 😉
yes but it's an extra $50
Aputure 200x nicht zu erwähnen für 20 Prozent mehr Geld und deutlich mehr leistung schon bisschen komisch ;) ..
bad purchase - bluetooth constantly FAILS - there is NO remote control - light is nice tho - returned
