Idk if this was established or not, but I wonder if the prison was made by the humans or if this was an alien facility that crashed to earth and the scientists just found it with the creatures inside. Still wonder what exactly triggered their awakening and release

I'm at the part with the cells, just wanna say it sounds like some kind of alien prison or laboratory. I'd say a zoo if it wasn't down a hall behind a thick carved ice door. And the door seems like everything was set to break down and set them free after a great cataclysm that melted the polar and antarctic ice caps either that or the jailers were supposed to return then. If they're monsters why not destroy them, if their endangered species why not find them habital planets with no intelligent life and plenty of game to feed them?
