      People get abortions and where are the foetuses going? Into the trash. Would you rather throw away perfect stem cells to help anyone that is suffering? Or live in the pass and not want to move on. People talk about morality alot. But if it’s your family member going through a muscular disease and you see them suffering everyday you would want a cure. We need this. Damn humans have research that can enhance everything, cure aids even cancer. This is a need not a want

    This is an interesting topic and to start, it's important to understand what stem cells are and why they are so valuable for research. Stem cells are special cells that can develop into many different types of cells in the body. They have the potential to be used to treat a wide range of medical conditions, including Parkinson's disease, diabetes, and spinal cord injuries. Because they possess such great potential in treating diseases which are difficult to cure/treat, they demonstrate a chance for beneficence, which refers to the obligation to do good and promote the welfare of others. Stem cell research has the potential to lead to important medical breakthroughs and treatments which could significantly improve the health and well-being of countless individuals. I would argue that stem cell research fulfills the principle of beneficence by promoting the health and welfare of others.
    However, many of the comments on this video are not solely focused on stem cells, but specifically mentioning embryonic stem cells. Typically, embryonic stem cells are derived from human embryos that are typically left over from fertility treatments. The concern is that using these embryos for research involves destroying potential human life, which some people find morally objectionable. However, I might argue that embryonic stem cell research is ethical because the embryos used would likely be discarded anyway. In many ways, I like to compare it to donating one’s body to science. While people of religious affiliation may call this desecration, bodies used in science are also responsible for scientific discovery and education of future medical providers.
    Utilizing embryonic stem cells not only provide researchers with an opportunity to do good but also allow them to use resources that may have been disposed of. Preventing this type of research would not only harm the millions who suffer from chronic conditions but also cause waste within the medical field.

    The video "The Ethical Questions of Stem Cell Research" presents a complex and challenging issue that touches on several fundamental ethical principles. Stem cell research has the potential to revolutionize modern medicine, but it also raises important ethical questions related to the use of human embryos and the potential for exploitation. One of the key ethical principles at play in the debate over stem cell research is respect for autonomy. Individuals have the right to make decisions about their own bodies and to determine what happens to their genetic material. However, this principle can come into conflict with the principle of beneficence, which requires that we act in ways that promote the well-being of others. Another important ethical principle at play in the stem cell research debate is justice. This principle requires that the benefits and burdens of research be distributed fairly across society. Stem cell research has the potential to benefit many individuals with a range of health conditions, but it may also lead to unequal access to healthcare and exacerbate existing disparities. The principle of non-maleficence is also relevant to the ethical questions surrounding stem cell research. This principle requires that we avoid harming others and not expose them to unnecessary risk. The use of human embryos in research raises concerns about the potential for exploitation and harm to vulnerable populations. Overall, the ethical questions surrounding stem cell research are complex and require careful consideration of multiple ethical principles. As we navigate this debate, it is important to balance the potential benefits of stem cell research with our ethical obligations to respect the autonomy of individuals, promote justice, and avoid harm.

    these embryos (for example those made in excess in IVF clinics and in abortions) are not likely to ever be used to become developed children- so is it really ethical to have an embryo sitting frozen in a lab forever “just in case”, where it will likely expire or die anyway due to exposure to natural processes, while it could be used for research that could save so many lives and improve so many more?

      @refinnej5302 6 лет назад +3

      Yes, embryonic stem cells have a lot more options and they are less likely to have damage that natural occurs as humans age.
      Adult/Tissue Stem Cells
      Adult stem cells, or “tissue stem cells,” can come from different parts of the adult body. They are specific to a certain kind of tissue in the body: for instance, liver stem cells can regenerate liver tissue, and muscle stem cells can regenerate muscle fibers. But adult stem cells are limited to only becoming more of their specialized tissue-liver stem cells cannot make new muscle fibers, nor can muscle stem cells make new liver tissue.
      Embryonic/Pluripotent Stem Cells
      The thousands of different cell types that make up our bodies all came from one single “master builder” cell, called a pluripotent stem cell.
      Pluripotent stem cells can be thought of as “blank slates,” because of their ability to build any cell type in the body-skin cells, brain cells, muscle cells, etc. Unlike tissue stem cells, pluripotent stem cells are not limited to only becoming more of a certain tissue.
      Pluripotent stem cells primarily consist of embryonic stem cells, but the term now also encompasses another type of cells, called “induced pluripotent stem cells.” More on that later.

    • @BasedAstraea

      @Joshua Lopez With stem cells well eventually be able to cure any cause of blindness, deafness, shortsightedness, many chronic diseases, there's already experimental treatments now for cancer, I know someone that had it. They're alive today because of this research.
      It will end the era of waiting for organ transplants and having to take medication the rest of your life so the body doesn't reject it. Stem cells can regrow any organ in your body, using your own DNA. No waiting for it, no taking medication the rest of your life.
      If you lose a limb from whatever, infection, frostbite, war, etc. with stem cell technology we could regrow lost limbs. We can heal scars of any kind. Literally heal brain damage, well literally be in a new era of mankind.
      One where ailments are a thing of the past and living standards skyrocket. Were being held back from this wonderful future because of limitation on this research and applications.

    • @BasedAstraea
      @BasedAstraea 3 года назад +3

      @Joshua Lopez Stem cell research isn't built on "klling countless humans" it uses life that already passed, it's life that's rich in stem cells and cannot be acquired any other way.
      Whether it's from a miscarried fotus, or an abrted one, or even an ambilical cord, there's nothing unethical about the research itself or any kllng involved. It's putting something that would have been bug food to good use.
      I find your points interesting, but also a good argument for being vegan and against any animal testing. I doubt you're vegan though, you should be if you were to live by you points since it applies to all sentient life.

      Marcel Costache All of our other cells are life forms as well. And yet, approximately 50 to 70 billion cells die in the average adult human body every single day.
      So basically, if cell lives matter, every human being is a living breathing genocide. I’m against abortion if the nervous system is developed.
      But if it’s any stage before that, then it can’t feel pain, and it doesn’t have a brain yet. So that means there’s nothing that really distinguishes it from just another clump of cells. The same cells in us that die by the billions every single day.
      Now, one could argue that it’s still wrong to do stem cell research, because you could’ve brought a conscious entity into this world, but chose not to. But this is sort of like saying it’s wrong not to have kids in the first place. And if there’s a family with 3 kids, it’s saying “It’s wrong not to have a 4th, or a 5th, or a 9,999,999,999,999th.”
      Because no matter what you do, you’re preventing people from existing all the time.
      Every second of every day is a potential opportunity to have sex with someone (theoretically speaking) and impregnate them. (But of course, spending every second of every day, fucking as many people as often as humanly possible, is a horrible idea.)
      Technically speaking, every second you’re not having sex, is another person you’ve prevented from existing.
      Even when you have sex, a single cumshot contains about 80 million to 300 million sperm cells. And in most cases, only one sperm cell actually makes it to the egg. So all those millions of sperm cells are people you’ve prevented from existing.
      Besides, if scientists generate something useful out of stem cell research, it could save billions of human lives, and greatly increase our lifespans.

    Why are you so concerned about law and ethics if you are just doing science? I am also an engineer student, and I am not dumb enough to not admit to what I do. You guys know you are doing research with embryos. Just use non-embryonic stem cells. Why did you not talk about this in the video? And they are more abundant and efficient, you know it. You even talked about iPSCs on the video. Why not do research on it? Be honest with yourselves a bit. You only hired these bioethics guys for them to tell you sweet lies. Denial is nice, huh? I know it's hard, but truth should be kept above all. Aren't you guys scientists?
    And don't come with 'They would die anyways'. Market principles apply everywhere. If there is no demand, it will obviously be less of a problem. Every video I saw about this has these dead-inside people. No value for human life. Cancer on the earth is what you think people are, right? Worse than animals and plants, oh how horrible we are. People project lack of empathy and goodwill on others, without noticing they are the ones lacking it.
    5:24 Really sums it up, they only see this as one more interesting discover before their inevitable end. Just appreciating the universe one more day, isn't it? How lovely.
