  • This is a compilation of the latest three extractions of System 002. The total catch is 55,020kg so far; 1/1500th of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, and a new crew is already on their way back to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to continue the cleanup.
    Chapters:
    00:00 Underwater inspection of System 002
    00:24 Extraction #23, February 14th, 2022
    02:35 Extraction #22, February 5th, 2022
    04:17 Extraction #21, January 27th, 2022
    --
    Trash accumulates in five ocean garbage patches, the largest one being the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, located between Hawaii and California. If left to circulate, the plastic will impact our ecosystems, health, and economies. Solving it requires a combination of closing the source, and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean.
    The ocean is big. Cleaning up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch using conventional methods - vessels and nets - would take thousands of years and tens of billions of dollars to complete. After fleets of The Ocean Cleanup systems are deployed into every ocean gyre, combined with source reduction, The Ocean Cleanup projects to be able to remove 90% of ocean plastic by 2040.

      Exciting ... the ocean is our lifeline. So grateful people are beginning to recognize how essential it is to our survival and it’s no understatement. We need not be those who don’t know what we’ve got till it’s gone.

      so much? the goal of 30million pounds is only 5.7% of how much trash there is in the ocean. Barely making a difference, but yes I agree they're doing a good thing obvs but they need a way bigger goal that 5.7% of trash in the ocean.

      @@BalboaBaggins I’m sorry if I seemed disrespectful. I definitely don’t want to exclude all the effort of other people, and I do believe that everyone has to start the change from themselves. I just feel like until we all would, it would’ve already been too late. This problem is massive and and ocean cleanup has come up with a self-sustainable, relatively quick, effective, and permanent solution. And you don’t see much of these nowadays, when everything seems to get only worse. They’ve shown that something this enormous can actually get better until it’s late!

    1 question, seems like when you first bring the bag onto the ship a lot of the plastics are being crushed? You can hear it in the intro. Wouldn't this be releasing micro plastics into the water? Seems like a gentle ramp on the end would make it quicker/easier to load onto the ship, and potentially reduce micro plastics:)

      The net C02 of the just this one trip is likely WELL above what is gained by removing trash. That ship is 240ft long that has to sail something near 2500 miles round trip if its based in the LA/LongBeach area. All to collect 30,000 pounds of trash. Thats orders of magnitude below even 1/100th of whats being tossed in rivers and oceans daily. This whole thing is logically futile until consumers change their habits, and governments are held financially liable for what is discharged from their rivers. Both of which will never happen

    • @stevej7139
      @stevej7139 2 года назад

      @@jarred267 That all depends how short sighted you want to be , after all the effect is 24/7/365 , if you want to measure the effect for only one year perhaps it is less than the cost I don't have the numbers to figure that out however any effect that continues for the length of time it takes the plastic to break down and no longer decrease absorption with have a positive net effect no matter how you try to spin it .
