It’s no secret that groups have been fabricated throughout the history of pop music. Most of the Monkees early music was done by studio musicians, there’s the Partridge Family (seriously now), and it’s believed the Village People were not the ones singing on their albums.
The list goes and on.
Beyond that, in other areas of the entertainment industry, such as movies, the end product is a result of numerous contributors with the actors, who play a relatively minor role relative to the amount of credit they get, often simply being the face of the product of sometimes
literally thousands of people’s work. Beyond that, numerous celebrities (and even professional authors) “write,” and take complete credit for, books in which they really just hired a ghost writer to pen the actual thing based on (sometimes extremely few) notes and ideas from the listed author. Nobody bats an eye at any of that.
So why was everyone picking on Rob and Fab?

People were outraged and acted like it was the first time that music listeners had ever been taken in by records that didn't scrupulously reveal who was the actual creative force behind them.
But in dance music, in particular, producers had been creating fake group and artist names to slap onto their studio creations forever. So when Milli Vanilli was revealed to be a manufactured group like the Archies, I was like, so what?

Rob's "voice" in Milli Vanilli was always suspicious to me. It always sounded like an older chubby black guy. Turns out I was right (Brad Howell).

He had a beautiful voice, it's terrible that he broke down this case and fell into drug addiction. It would be so beautiful now. You can see that he was in despair. It wasn't just a music scandal. Because of this, a dead man. When I first heard the story of Milli Vanilli and learned how Rob died I had tears in my eyes. Especially when I saw one of his later statements.

Their American record label Arista had falsely claimed on the liner notes of their record releases that Rob & Fab were the singers. The music couldn’t have its full impact without both the lip-synchers and the singers. The singers were just as guilty of willingly playing along in the charade.
They were victims of those who made them, in the end they betrayed them and were cruel to them, justice for Milli Vanilli!!!!! 😭😭

These guys were so awesome. It's too bad that they got used and thrown under the bus and society ate it up.
He has a much better his own singing voice than the most popular artists have in these these days. Many current artists can't even sing without autotune, which completely changes the sound of their voice. The most of them do not tell their fans "My voice is = autotune". So autotune hoax is worse than lip-syncing hoaxes in 80/90's.
They sounded as good with their voices as the original fat singer. They deserved the Grammy back!

This wasn’t on the Rob & Fab album. This likely was a demo record that they were performing live on European television appearances to try and still have recording careers after the Milli Vanilli producer fired them and were exposed as lip-synchers.

I can't speak on the Village People but the Monkees were actually known to sing AND play live. The Archies were transparently a cartoon band that couldn't play live.
Milli Vanilli was way bigger. The Grammy win was their downfall because they made the Recording Academy look ridiculous.
After the fact they got right back up after being knocked down and sounded pretty good. Not as good as the group who did their original songs, but not bad.

The Monkees did play on their albums and Victor Willis did sing and wrote on the Village People albums he was on so those are inaccurate comparisons. Rob and Fab didn't sing or play a note on Milli Vanilli albums.

I think they are lip syncing to their own voices here. Singing and English lessons and improving their vocals in studio, lip syncing while they kept working until they had confidence to sing live or lip syncing to songs that demanded physical performances and singing live to the ballads. This would have been a smart solution to their lack of experience as singers and unpolished vocals.
No, this was sung live.
Being able to carry a tune is a long way off from being a lead vocalist: fine attempt, but they really can't sing. And during this era, singers really had to be able to sing. Nowadays, not so much.
What do you know about this era, you know absolutely know nothing,...Janet Jackson, Paula Abdul New Kids on the Block, Madonna all lip synch in their concert, and there's a documentary about it, faking in their concert...and they stay relevant, and there's several group lipsync to someone else vocals clearly you don't read the description, Fun Factory one of the fake group even won MTV award after the downfall of Millivanilli shows that the award show don't care about the authenticity, they are not the greatest singers all of them but they were known as a performing artist, the reason these guys got mocked constantly in the US because they can't hide the fakery since they can't even speak English what more to sing in English. And the industry already ready to dump them when things can't hide any longer. A vocal coach who worked with Michael Jackson said during the whole fallout from the lipsynching reveal that Rob & Fab were “entirely capable” singers. Nobody like that in the music industry would just put themselves out there like that and risk their very credibility if they couldn’t stand by what they were saying.
