Good catch. The previous owner already got the gear re-drilled but I'm not sure about the bolts. Didn't even realize that it was an issue as well. It's time to adjust lifters/valves anyway so the timing of this video works out great for me. So yeah, thanks for uploading this. 👍🏼

That broken timing chain guide gave me flashbacks. In my 330i, the timing chain guides disintegrated, and the debris clogged the oil pump pickup. That was a fun project. 🙄

This is the main reason why I dont trust people working on my vehicles; cutting corners. The vanos on the s54 is pretty tedious! I also never found the end piece of the timing chain guide. I think the plastic is fragile enough to disintegrate. I did not find anything when doing the rod-bearings.

Is there a similar problem with these bolts in the e39m5? The VANOS look the same as the E46M3. Also, does it make sense to redrill the oil pump for a tighter fit on the e39m5 like it was done on this e46m3?

I’m thinking of s54 swapping my 05 330xi. It’s between the s54 or the w211 e55 amg motor with the amg transmission converting to RWD. Thoughts? Or should I stay away from these German motors and lean more towards the LS side?
