I love how they took real-world lore and implemented it into the game. Perfectly executed. The Mesopotamian god Shamash inhabited a volcano nearby their land and he would 'send dreams' from the volcano/mountain. Ring a bell? The elves are like all the 'mongoloids' put together... Dwemmer are obviously based on the Sumerians though with their technology and whatnot. Everything else is a clusterfuck.

What I find ironic is that despite dagoth being evil, I think that if he won the dunmer would of been better off than if the nerevarine won.
The nerevarine took the divine power away from vivic almalexia and sotha sil. Both almalexia and sotha sil die, vivec disappears, the volcano erupts, argonians attack, then morrowind is destroyed.
I wonder what would of happened if dagoth won and took full control of the heart.

I liked how the prophecy was quite vague and how there were other Incarnates before our hero. It raises questions if he really is Nerevar reborn or just some random guy who just happened to be extremely resourceful (or lucky) to survive and too determined (or stupid) to just give up and get the hell out of here. Dagoth Ur's first question allows us to give our own opinion about the entire plot. You might for example, accept your seemingly pre-destined role (I am Nerevar reborn) or remain sceptical to the very end (I am a self-willed hero) and whatever the truth is, it doesn't matter. Hero gets the job done and thus becomes Nerevarine. Brilliant writing.

    Presentation
    Hello, my name is Raul.
I think computer games are powerful tools to understand ourselves.
I love them so much and I want to discover little by little their magic potential.
I would like to create a computer game, but I have no skills for that.
Despite this, I want to give my contribution to games.
This little essay is about just simple thoughts and observations about classic RGPs already distributed and played, some newer, some older.
But first, I want to thank you all the people that create these games: programmers, game designers, musicians, sound designers, graphic designer, artists, artificial intelligence programmers and everyone else involved, thank you!
Little essay about few classic RPGs
Morrowind, Skyrim, Gothic II, Dark Souls 2, Fallout 3, Daggerfall, Baldur's Gate 2, Vampire the Masquerade:Bloodlines, Planescape Torment and many more.
All of them are fantastic games, some of them masterpieces.
What makes these games great games?
I believe that the great games and in particular masterpieces have the power to go inside our mind changing us forever, not just as individuals, but us all.
What it is that remains in our mind and stays with us for the rest of our life? the gameplay? the graphics? the sound? the story? the characters? the concept?
It is hard to say, maybe is a combination of all of them, but playing games I realized that some of these elements are far more important then others.
    My thoughts:
    1) A beautiful and original story can go inside us much more then great graphic or gameplay mechanics.
    2) The sound and music can give life to the game and enhance the experience to higher levels.
    3) A face that speaks but does not show emotions is a big mistake, is better in this case don't show the animated face at all.
    4) If the acting voice is inconsistent, is far more better just using the written dialog.
    5) A less detailed world in terms of graphic allows to make it much more bigger.
    6) More realism does not mean more immersion, I actually think that is less interesting.
    7) A game is not a book, so I think that the dialogs and written words should be kept at a minimum.
    8) A realistic sky is beautiful, but not interesting. Is far more better to give some character to the sky with original clouds shapes.
    9) Bidimensional sprites sometime can have more character then 3d models, why not for example, animate a face with a sprite animation.
    10) A world with a interesting architecture is far more memorable.
    11) Sometimes low quality sample sounds can have more charm then high quality samples.
    12) I suggest to developers to simplify the world so to be able and dedicated resources to make it more interesting.
    13) I suggest to developers to use an old engine for concentrating on gameplay, story and characters.
    14) A memorable character will never be forgotten.
    15) Even the most sophisticated AI will repeat itself, so use simple scripted technology to create unexpected situation and behavior.
    16) Surprise the player is one of the most important thing in a Game.
    17) Scripting is time consuming but worthy as just the fantasy of a person can create beautiful unrepeatable things, events, stories, characters; this is why simplify the world can be a smart thing to do. Developers now have huge resources that can dedicate over this task instead of realistic graphics or realistic physics.
    18) I think multiple choices are a non-sense, or at least not powerful. The feeling of fake options dispels the sense of immersion; the feeling is that someone wants to tell me where I'm going.
    19) Steer away from realism, it drains a lot of energy and does not serve the purpose to immerse the player in something magical.
    20) The world is always in the mind of the player not inside the monitor, leave the space to his imagination, in this way it is more powerful.
    21) Mods are fantastic and one of the biggest reality of gaming, congratulation to all the modders that put their love in this new reality.
all modders can use freely my music, just contact me if you like it and want to use it.
    22) Instead of using expensive full orchestra music, hire few different unknown composers/players that can produce a lot of different music.
    23) The faces of NPCs are very important, give them a lot of charisma, make them memorable.
    24) It is not necessary put the voice to all the dialogs, just few memorable voiced sentence are enough to give the presence to a character.
    25) Usually developers make something happen in every location, I think is a mistake; I prefer to have plenty of places where nothing happen and then when I found a place with some kind of event, it will be far more enjoyable.
    26) Use a voice or writing that sometimes describes and add details to the scene, a character a place, a situation: this is a powerful tool for immersion; for example we cannot have smells or odors in a games, so the developers can add this perceptions with a txt or voice descriptions.

Raul Gubert That's quite a well thought out list. You know you could try becoming a game designer if you don't have the programming and art skills. You don't need a lot of skill yourself to make your own game, you just need a team and some good ideas.

    • @1luarluar1
      @1luarluar1 9 лет назад +1

TheSm1thers Thank you a lot, I'm happy you think there are some interesting ideas...I also agree with you, and that's exactly what I would like to do...my idea is to write a simple and small book that contains core ideas for creating games, whoever is interested can pick up the idea and develop it into a game....here a primitive example...:-)
THE GAMES TO COME (title of the book)
      The Knight of the Universe
      (2nd game)
The game is about a Knight dressed with an armor and he drives a sphere.
The screen is divided in two.
The first half of the screen is a First Person View of the knight inside the sphere, the knight is looking out from a slit of the sphere.
      The second half of the screen is an isometrical map;
the map shows at a medium distance the sphere and its surrounding, included the enemies outside the view of the PC (Playable Character).
It is a strategic map that the player has to use to navigate inside the environment and for checking the position of the enemies.
The objective is to kill the enemy prince at the end of the level.
      All the enemies, are spheres.
Inside the spheres there are knights, the player can see the helmet of the knights when is close to another sphere.
There are no naked faces, just knights with different kinds of helmets.
There are no weapons, actually, the spheres are the weapons themselves.
The enemies knights, will try to hit the PC (Playable Character) with the spheres, or will try to push it into deadly areas, like holes, or canyons or water rivers, lakes, lava..etc...
The sphere are indestructible, bun not the knights NPC or PC inside, every hard hit, hurts them, and can be killed instantaneously with a massive hit, for example when they collide with each other or against a wall at very high speed.
The enemies knights have different strengths, depending on the design of the sphere, the colour, sound and size.
The isometrical map has the important function to understand the best way to reach a location avoiding enemies much more powerful, or running away from group of enemies, or a high rank sphere almost impossible to defeat.
One of the appeal of the games is, a part the combat, trying to avoid dangerous encounters and escape from the chasing enemies.
The environment has to be very clean and geometrical, with corridors, tunnels, holes, open spaces, ramps, canyons, labyrinths, bridges, arenas (in the style of Tron).
The Spheres can reach very high speed, 500 km/h...
The feeling has to be like a ''Futuristic Knight Environment''.
Every encounter with a knight has to be very dramatic, defeating a sphere has to be very hard, and harder with the high rank knights.
The encounters must happen not often, because the best part of the game is the lonely exploration, it has to feel like a desolated and lonely world.
At the end of each level the PC will meet the prince; he has not a sphere, he is just very vulnerable with his body...I inverted the cliche' that there has to be a difficult enemy at the end of each level; is more about the feeling of power and merciless.
At the end of all levels, you will find the Queen and the King, the PC has to kill both and becoming the Knight of the Universe.
      Thank you and good work!
Feel free to contact me if you are interested and want to know more about the idea.

The mountain's eruption and Dagoth Ur are not even related, Dagoth Ur planned on Corprus, the Divine Disease and he also planned on conquering the world, and would have succeeded. Either way red mountain go boom boom, but which is worth losing, 1 province, or the entire world? Exactly.

It absolutely scared the hell out of me. Running into a 2 or three bandits could very well be the end of your life. Magicka doesn't regen naturally... That said, you become freakishly strong, given enough time. Being able to create your own spells... Levitation... Etc.
The game felt more like an RPG, like D&D...which is obviously where this game came from. It's sad what has happened to this franchise. Now it's more like a first person shooter, but with swords. Very sad.

      >forgets details of his former life
      You what?

    • @augustusfloyd4890
      @augustusfloyd4890 9 лет назад +15

RakeMerger > I'm referring to Lorkhan when I say ancient enemy, as he waged war against the Aedra who were the ancestral spirit to the elves. When Lorkhan lost, Akatosh shot his heart using Auriel's bow into the sea, and Red Mountain formed around it, making the heart of Lorkhan the extremely powerful and coveted artifact to parallel the One Ring and Sauron.
      >While Nerevar was consulting Azura, he told Voryn Dagoth to watch after the heart, which poisoned his mind and body while he was gone. When he came back he asked for the tools, upon which Dagoth refused and attacked him. I know the Ashlanders made a conflicting account in the game, but one can assume that they are only publishing documents that would portray the tribunal in a slanderous light. It's clear Nerevar's Council did some questionable stuff, but Vivec tells it straight to the Nerevarine that Dagoth Ur mortally injured Nerevar in their fight, and he doesn't really have a reason to lie at this point. Whether or not the Tribunal killed him later and seized the tools, Dagoth still set up Nerevar to die, just like Smeagol killed his best friend Deagol when he was charmed by the One Ring.
      > Dagoth Ur is a mad god and was still lingering in Red Mountain because his will and essence was corrupted by the heart, just like the ring twisted Gollum's mind and prolonged his life, to where he forgot his original nature and identity. In Dagoth's case, he isn't just a wretched hobo like Gollum, but his new position as a god because of the heart came with the belief he is upholding a duty to Morrowind that was never really his own. He is pretty much still living in the First era, while the rest of the world has moved on. There is no more Voryn Dagoth, just a nationalistic force of nature that wants more or less world domination. In one of the dialogue options with Dagoth Ur, we learn that he believes he was justified in protecting the heart, and that Nerevar wrongfully killed him while he was still carrying out his duty, making him a vengeful spirit that wants to take fate of Tamriel into his own hands.

Dagoth Ur...the most complex character of all TES series in my opinion.

    • @159tony
      @159tony 8 лет назад +21

+Ashes of Dagoth so very complex... right..A complex character is one that you know and meet across your adventure. is built up to. Dagoth is just about as complex as the dialogue box that he greets you in. Paper thin without any real depth. he's a great villain, but far from being the MOST complex character in ALL of TES series. The most complex, objectively, from a writers stand point, is Mankar Camoran. He presents himself in the story once before you defeat him, and his threat and relevance in the story is constant, instead of doing fuck-all while you're out picking flowers and like dagoth, there's no sense of Urgency in stopping him, not even the illusion of one, there's nothing happening to major cities that threaten to wipe them off the map, there's nothing. The tribunal Expansion and the Bloodmoon expansions have much more complex villains as characters, Almalexia is built up in the story, and she is shown to be immensely powerful, her motives are made clear and there's a sense of urgency during the quest of getting to the bottom of things.

+John Blood Hm well, it was perhaps wrong to use an superlative. And apparently I used the word "complex " wrong, because I'm sure you didn't understand what I wanted to say. My bad, blame my english. Nevertheless, in my opinion he is one of the most interesting characters I encountered in the TES Series, just because his past and specially the events in the heartchamber are not so well known and let so much room for interpretation and conspiracy theories.

    • @Spaced92
      @Spaced92 6 лет назад +21

Mankar Camoran, come on man. He was just an insane cultist, how was he more relevant to Oblivion than Dagoth Ur was to Morrowind? Most people that played Oblivion wouldn't remember his name. Camoran is evil because he's evil. Dagoth Ur has legitimately understandable reasons behind everything he does and has an actual connection to the player, he needed the Nerevarine to gather the things he needed for him so he didn't interfere and let things play out. He has an 11 phase plan, yes it's all just background lore but that's still a part of his character, Camoran just stole an amulet. People sympathise with Dagoth Ur, no one cares about Camoran. You see the visible effects of Dagoth Ur's power, Mehrunes Dagon you don't even interact with and is the real threat in Oblivion.

John Samnath Doing a remaster for this game would basically be re making the whole game. It's not like Skyrim where they can simply dump it on a new engine and slap some shiny paint on. They would have to rebuild the whole structure.
There are mods that boost the graphics to that of Oblivion and better, and they're still being produced.

Personally, nothing. Just make sure you install the mod overhaul 3.0, and activate "shortcut key improvement" in the code patch section, to better manage inventory and dialogues. Anything that at first glance seems annoying in the game can be solved. Missing hits? train agility and make sure to choose a type of weapon as primary skill and stick with it in the beginning. No fast travel? use mage guild teleporters and mark and recall spells. No quest markers? read the journal and ask around to npc. Lost in Vvanderfell? use the map on uesp wiki. These are some tips that hope can be useful to overcome the initial impact with the game :)

Half of the problems you've listed are actually quite liked in the TES community, or at least those who like immersion, which is a very important thing in these games. The only trully anoying problem would be missing hits, but I personnaly think it makes sense, and that it is understandable from an old rpg view point.

I love these game mechanics too, that's part of what makes this game so immersive. My intention was not to mention them as problems, but as features that at first glance can be annoying for a new player but that can be actually enjoyed once you know how this game works.

I've never played this game, but I saw a few memes about Dagoth Ur and wondered if this was a "that was dumb let's make him a meme" kind of situation or a "that was so cool let's make him a meme" and from this video, I would say it's the latter. The character of Dagoth Ur really has a noble quality to the way he speaks that's never over-the-top. He does not taunt the player, except during the battle when he says that attacking him is foolish (but c'mon, who wouldn't say that). I also like how he has questions for the player, and invites the player to ask him questions. Even though he knows there will be a fight to the death, he cares about knowledge and personal interaction. It seems a shame for him to die. I also like the subtlety of the gameplay, art style, and voice acting, as opposed to most flashy modern styles.

Dagoth Ur is such a good villain. He isn't insane or somehow evil by birth. He has his own set of believes about what is best for his kind. Misguided as he might be, he has legitimate grievances with the world he seeks to correct, but what he seeks to correct those things into are malformed. Twisted. He seeks a new world, but can't see beyond his own archaic values and morals, which eventually lead to his downfall. Bethesda don't write villains like this anymore, the closest I can think of are Caesar and Mr. House from FNV, but even that wasn't Bethesda's writing team.
You can see why he mustn't be allowed to succeed and why he can't be talked down. He knows this too, he doesn't try to convince you to join his cause, because to him, there is too much at stake to let you deceive him, even potentially. He even reminisces of what could have been if you maybe could have been convinced. What a fantastic villain.
