Papyrus is a much beloved character within Undertale, known for his funny antics and inner kindness. However, one thing he isn't known for is being a particularly adept fighter - in fact, many consider him to be one of the easiest bosses within the game, which makes sense as he's only the second major boss we encounter. However, is there something we're missing? Is Papyrus really that weak, or is he just holding back? It's time to find out!

Bedecick Cucumberbatch Disbelief Papyrus is fanon. CANON Papyrus is already super strong. His control over his magic is literally, *perfect*, better than Toriel’s. He can turn his own soul blue and make himself literally fly (which is actually also an explanation on why Sans is able to dodge super fast).

One point not mentioned in this video that absolutely proves this point is the monster animation in battle. The more hostility a monster has or the more they want to kill you, the more they'll be animated in battle.
Toriel basically doesn't move apart from her facial expressions, Asgore bobs up and down, slowly as he's reluctant, Sans sways, bobs and slides, Undyne moves quite a bit, the monsters generally move a fair amount, Whimsun wanting to hurt you but being very much afraid hence the stiff movement and floating, Migosp being a sort of anomaly seeing as while he's around others, he barely moves as if he doesn't want to hurt you but when he's alone, dancing and not attacking you at all, Napstablook not moving as he doesn't want to fight, only crying as an attack and in his transformation into Dapperblook, Monster Kid not moving as he doesn't want to fight, only changing his sprite when you go to attack him, Mettaton moving like the human killer robot he is, Omega Flowey made of many many moving parts, Asriel moving as he wants to destroy you over and over but when you decide to spare him, he looses his will to fight and becomes still and Mad Dummy moving the most considering his levels of rage and hostility towards you.
Then you have Papyrus. Not once does his sprite change, AT ALL during the whole fight. He has absolutely no levels of hostility towards you so he doesn't move, not even in the slightest. That means that Papyrus was fighting with absolutely no intent, focus or goal of harming you in any way, very clearly shown in how if you keep loosing to him after he keeps capturing you, he lets you go free. He is literally the embodiment of "I was fighting with 0.1% of my true power" because he literally was and whats crazier is not only was his "normal" attack one of the most complex ones in the game, not only was that "normal" attack done without any intent on harming the player, that giant bone that he threw in, done without any malicious energy or focus, but the fact that he intended to use his special attack on you implies that even at said "0.1% of his true power", he can use his special attack, even without the need of expending any malicious energy if any energy at all, he can use his special attack, imagine how absolutely insanely powerful Papyrus would be if he wanted to kill you?
And that's not all
Flowey knows this. As we know, Flowey has had his fair share of resetting the timeline over and over, experiencing every single little experience he can find. Flowey has experienced an angry Papyrus. He knows the power that the kind souled bonehead can muster. That's why at the end of True Pacifist, when Flowey is binding everyone with his vines, everyone including Sans is bound with 2 vines- except Papyus who is bound with 4. We know it isn't because of his size otherwise Undyne, Asgore and Toriel who are similar size to Papyrus would also be bound with 4 or at least 3. Flowey NEEDS to bind Papyrus with 4 because he's just that strong. Sans true strength is already being sealed by himself (implicitly) and his Defence is low so there's no need to bind him with 4. We can assume that Asgore and Toriel are of similar levels of strenght, Asgore being stronger, we know that Asgore is much stronger than Undyne only being knocked down once because he let himself be, Flowey probably having seen Undyne's Undying form before not binding her with more in preparation for that and Alphys being bound bc she's Alphys, she probably has gadgets she can use to cut through his vines, though considering she is also bound with only 2 that implies he's using the bare minimum or something close to that to bind everyone except Papyrus bc Papyrus is too strong for Flowey to simply use the bare minimum.
Don't forget what Papyrus says when you spare him on the genocide route, he says "my special attack would blast you away", well something like that.

If the Annoying Dog is essentially Toby Fox, could that mean that Toby was holding Papyrus back from unleashing a devastating attack? Could Toby have been trying to help us get past Papyrus by forcing him to do a much simpler attack? Perhaps his Special Attack was something stronger than anything Sans could muster, and Toby thought that would be WAY too much for a newbie to handle? I dunno, just a little concept I thought of. Too lazy to find any evidence for it, either.

Well if given if Sans were to die first( I think Papyrus would show his true capabilities. He may even be stronger than Sans but he sees no reason to show it.

Honestly, in canon, if Papyrus saw Sans die or something, he'd probably still be really positive, considering he gave no shit that people died in some neutral routes. He might of taken it harder, but I don't think it'd be enough to make Papyrus be all like "You bad, you die."

Well, Papyrus DOES know about Sans' powers. He knows about the timelines, and possibly the resets. When you enter Sans' room, Papyrus says something along the line of "Is Sans pranking you throughout timelines again?" (Something like that, I'm not 100% sure.) And at the end of a Pacifist route, he says "This is the worst possible ending!" And I also do believe he knows about Sans' teleportation. (Again, I'm not too sure.) But I do agree that he could have a much more powerful fight.

This theory reminds me a lot of the RUclips video, DISBELIEF (Papyrus's Genocide Route), which is basically an au where Sans fights the human in Snowdin instead after witnessing many genocide routes. Then the Papyrus fight in the judgement hall looks like literal hell in the animation and stuff.

The most powerful person is always the one that shows the most restraint.
hmm. The game does hint at how Papyrus may have Gaster blasters, but I don't think he would ever use his power to hurt others. In that sense, Papyrus isn't dangerous at all. Even if, say, Sans was killed before his brother, I doubt Papyrus would kill the player. I'm not trying to say that Papyrus doesn't care enough about his brother for revenge - but that he doesn't believe in revenge at all. For all his immaturity, Papyrus is a pacifist even when the fact that the human has killed every single person in Snowdin is thrown in his face. He knows that doing something like killing the murderer won't bring the victim back. If anything, he would do anything to avoid hurting his brother's killer - to make sure that Frisk doesn't reload and try to kill again. This is one reason why I don't like the disbelief au - it's just against Papyrus's character.
Sans didn't try to stop us from attacking his brother...because he knew Papyrus had chosen to show the human mercy. Sans knew his brother was ready to live - and die - by this decision. And though it must've been hard for him, he stayed away. He let his brother make friends with Frisk, and never told Papyrus anything bad about the human even on neutral routes where others were dying. Sans respected how Papyrus never asked to many questions- such as how they got money for rent in Snowdin, or exactly what Sans was upto in the lab and his room. Sans even said once that 'Not everyone is as strong as my brother' but he meant that in terms of mental resolve. After all, at a time when the retire underground was falling into despair, Papyrus was the only one who continued smiling and never thought too hard about freedom. Letting Papyrus make his own friends and live (and die) by his decision to grant Frisk mercy was the most Sans could do for his brother.
Otaku-chan Papyrus is dangerous. But only in the slightest. Why I say this is because sans is smarter than any new person to undertale would think. Relating to sans papyrus cares for the lazy bones. Let's say it were papyrus put in sanses place. All I'll say is every boss monster would either become scared, or reach their breaking point. Like undyne and mettaton they REALLY hate you in the genocide route. Sans could have instantly killed you. Why? Because he has the power to move your soul causing you to move as well. And since that's the case; sans could pin you down to the ground and slowly/quickly kill you. How this would relate to papyrus is the fact that papyrus said 'Well here's a normal attack'
Saying that and giving an attack so off putting would mean if papyrus knew just how many times he died due to vulnerability he'd instantly break. And most likely be the one to stop chara or frisk or whatever from their evil deed no matter how many times. As far as I know, the monsters in the underground seem to remember even if to you: you went back in time. That's all I have to say. J
Eterological Gamer yes the monsters seem to sense that we've gone ga know in time, but the don't _remember_ . They feel it like deja-vu. Papyrus does say things like 'Sans, do we know this human?' But he doesn't know.
The 'completely normal attack' thing is just normal in Papyrus's eyes because he views it as ordinary compared to his special attack. Yes there's some things hinting at how the special attack could be a Gaster blaster. But Papyrus would never use it - just look at the genocide route. He refused to even fight...
When I say that Papyrus isn't scary, I mean that not in terms of his physical capacities and potential but his character. I don't care if Papyrus was the the most op character in the underground...he still wouldn't harm so hair on Frisk's head.
First of all, this ain't my theory, its by my friend Blackout.
Here we go:
Let me explain the evidence .
Since version 1.0001, after sparing Papyrus on a genocide run and going inside of his room, you can inspect the box of bones. He says, qoute:
"Hey! Those are all the attacks I didn't use against you! Lucky you. Had I only used my special attack, you would've surely been "blasted to-" hey, where is my special attack?" 2. Why the fuck did sans not use Gaster blasters against Flowey at the end of the pacifist route when everyone is trapped in the vines? Because he didn't have them. And papyrus obviously didn't bring any attacks to a friendly meet-up.
Papyrus says in the pacifist run that the dog stole his attack. But since we have evidence that his attack is ACTUALLY Gaster blasters, and the dog just carries a small normal bone, I'm pretty sure he's lying. He doesn't want to hurt you with the gaster blasters, while still looking tough. As Undyne said- he's pretty freaking strong. He just can't muster himself to hurt anybody.
Don't Forget Disbelief Papyrus!
I feel that it's worth noting that on top of all that Papyrus is the ONLY character in the game (to the best of my knowledge) that cannot and will not kill you in a fight. even Toriel can accidentally kill you if you run into her attacks at low health whereas Papyrus will simply non-lethally capture you.
This I feel is one of his most telling character traits and one of the reasons I like the character so much
I don’t think Sans alone is the most powerful monster. It’s implied that Sans’s power comes from his ability of Karmic Retribution, so he really is only strong against someone who is evil, and pretty useless against a pacifist.
Even if his karma attacks was based around your sin and if you were good. Landing a single hit on him is insanely hard. Someone that good hearted would still die to sans because they would almost be as weak as sans. 20 small bone hits from sans and you are a goner while he would be easier without karma... without determination he would be right where he would have killed the human right as they exited the ruins if toriel hadn't said anything and if you leveled up at all his karma would increase in power. Meaning sans would always be tough no matter his opponent or their good will just because he is good at teleporting and dodging.
Toby Fox should make an alternate version of undertale where if you go geno you end up killing sans first and have to fight a P'ed off Papyrus

No, if that normal attack was his Special attack, then what did the dog steal? Why does he mention blasting you in an aborted genocide run? And why would Papyrus be insecure about it? Papyrus doesn’t give two s**ts about what people think of him.
@@titanictnt7476 That last statement is kind of wrong. Papyrus wants to be liked and loved by everybody. That's why he wants to join the Royal Guard. That's why he wants Undyn'e approval. That's why he cooks Spaghetti. He wants some form of respect from everybody around him. That's why he loves Mettaton so much. Mettaton has that degree of love and respect Papyrus happens to desire. That and it's implied that Papyrus likes good entertainment.

I actually am inclined to believe the Gaster split theory, so if we assume it to be true just for a moment and Sans is the logical half, Sans fighting style makes a lot of sense: He doesn't actually have strong emotions (which is why he normally doesn't even care too much for Papyrus' Death), which is why he has to rely on multiple hits, poison and using time-space related powers (like teleport-dodging to evade hits that would instantly kill him and shortening your invincibility after a hit to 0) as his actual "desire to hurt" is basically zero.
If Papyrus were to actually want to fight, his fighting style would likely be a lot like we'd expect it from Chara: Capable of killing in a single blow and soak up ungodly amounts of damage, as he is purely made of emotion. As there is not much to hold him back in terms of logic, he might even turn into the Saitama of the underground. If he were to let his emotions run wild, he could possibly work himself up into a rage that might last for hours or days. This could also be another reason for why Sans avoids fighting you before you meet Papyrus: The chance that you reset until you beat him is pretty high, and when you get Papyrus angry that way, HE will destroy the underground even if you give up fighting him.

we need to remember that magic is directly linked to "intent", the want to hurt someone, its the reason we can one-hit monsters in a genocide run, papyrus never intends to hurt us, let alone *kill* us, hes going easy on us whether he means to or not, he doesnt want to hurt us, even refusing to fight us in genocide.
Papyrus DOES have power to defeat Chara. He is just to innocent to DO the harming. If Sans and Papyrus's battle times were swapped papyrus could possibly have the power in him to defeat you. Also papyrus shares something with almost everything in the game. Determination. Speaking of this papyrus is most likely the most determined character in the game. In the underground, determination represents power. if this fact is true, Papyrus could be unstoppable. He just doesn't want to harm you because he just wants to capture you. but mostly Papyrus has a caring heart and would not try to hurt you. that's why Papyrus's attacks are so weak. he doesnt want to harm you in any way. he just wants to be popular and join the royal guard! now that, is a dream to follow!

How powerful is he really? He hits you like a truck without even knowing that he was fighting, so how hard would he hit if you knew he was? And you can only do a maximum of 100 damage to him no matter what weapon, showing that he has a lot of defence, considering his guard was not up at all. Probably. Why would someone have their guard up in an art club?

To all those claiming sans is a cheater, and by that I mean one comment I saw, technically is not because to cheat he'd be doing something that was against the rules, but sans is the judge, and dictates those rules himself. So if you hurt him to the point where papyrus' guiding is no longer fair because you have well and truly destroyed his home, well, I don't think you deserve to be treated with a a rule blinded fight. He uses karmic retribution . Thus he can be strong only in a genocide run . In pasifist run his attacks might heal you..
the fifth mystery I understand your point howeverkarmic retribution acts as poison, whilst his attacks hurt you consistently because he takes away your brief protection when damaged. Whilst he may be slightly weaker, his attacks would still be very powerful to those who can't use this ability, everyone, and would maybe heal you on a pacifist run, but that makes sense. Sans would only fight you if he was forced to on a pacifist run, as he wants you to do the right thing. However I do see how he may be less powerful but he still has immense power through his extensive knowledge of the undertake universe

You realize KR was just a thing the fandom coined, and then everyone just started spouting it as though it were actually addressed as that in game or by anyone in it's development team.
Like Gaster being instantly related to the skeleton bros because he humanoid and has glowing eyes, and not that it's also just possible he was a close friend of Sans or something.
Despite the fact that he has no teeth or otherwise skeletal features to his facial structure.
And despite the fact that all of his 'followers', like the amalgamates, have in black and white non-battle sprite color schemes. Despite any similar monsters possessing color.
Also how everyone instantly assumes that X must know nothing about Y because X never mentions Y.
Or X knows ALLL about Y, because X brings it up in extensive detail.
I love papyrus and it would be cool if he turned out to be stronger than sans

@JIVER Gaming Yep. If Sans comes on time before you kill Papyrus you kill Sans instead of Papyrus. Then at the end of the route Papyrus no longer believes in you and wants you dead. (Disbelief Papyrus)
Aight, Sans is seen as the hardest boss because of his Karma effect, against other monsters such as Asgore and Undyne, he'd be dead. Overall, Sans is a perfect counter to Chara, but not to others, so there's a chance of Papyrus being stronger.

I'm sure papyrus wouldn't try to kill you but would just find it hard to still be nice to you.
Maybe his bad cooking represents that he can be powerful but can't use his true power because of many big and small obstacles
Just an idea
Ok, imagine this:
Sans is already able to kick your living being thanks to the karmic retribution, since it ignores the defense and invulnerability, but he couldn't actually have any chance against characters like Undyne since he only deals 1 dmg, considering he basically just sleeps, drinks, and eats, it's pretty weak compared to the royal guards.
Now, Papyrus is literally able to control his magic *perfectly* even being able to change the sizes and shapes from his bones, BUT he isn't able to kill, he just doesn't think that killing is good in ANY case, that's why he always will try to make the human change and doesn't just kill us.

edit: I mean this in the sense that Deku has an unnatural and inexplicable amount of control over his Quirks most of the time, plus he'd never kill anyone (as proven by his refusal to kill Shigaraki even when that's the only real option)
He's a poorly made character in comparison to Papyrus, and I am in no way saying that Papyrus is equivalent to Deku in that sense.

Paps is probably the smartest because instead of murdering you on your rampage. He trys to change your mind about slaughtering everyone. Perhaps he's aware of determination and knows he cannot kill you. He's also extremely brave as even when facing death he tells you that you can make a difference

If a skeleton with 1 attack and 1 defense is that difficult, imagine how difficult a skeleton with 20 attack and 20 defense would be. Papyrus *really* doesn't want to kill you, so he holds back for that very reason. His attacks would be insane if he wanted them to be.
I hope to see more of Papyrus from Toby in the future. I'm one hundred percent sure Papyrus is stronger than Sans, and would be unbeatable in a fight if pushed to his limit. He can control his magic perfectly and he's tough. He actually, apparently, makes more puns than Sans does, too. Flowey says Paps is the most interesting out of all characters. He binds Paps with four vines, everyone else less. I think he's more clever than people think.

Don't forget: Papyrus seems to be aware of Sans' ability to 'prank' the human across time and space; as seen if you can get Sans to give you his triple-super-secret-special code word. He seems aware of Sans more 'eccentric' abilities and isn't phased by them. It makes you wonder if that, whether or not he can or can't be capable of doing it himself, if he may have potential in other areas.

My theory/headcanon:
Papyrus and Sans both were created as test subjects of Dr. Gaster, yet he mostly treated them as children. He injected them with determination at one point. After the accident, Papyrus and Sans lived with Asgore for a while until a human passed and they ran away out of horror of seeing Asgore kill them. They later forgot about the incident. Papyrus and Sans moved away from the capital to Snowdin. Papyrus works with Sans and Alphys in the lab, and he wants to join the royal guard as he wants his father to be proud of him. I also believe Papyrus isn't depressed like Sans because he believes that the human/Flowey can stop resetting and be nicer and let them be. I believe that like Sans, Papyrus has Gaster Blasters, telekinesis, and glowing eye. It's his right eye which flashes orange and bright green, for the traits Bravery and Kindness that fit him as Sans's traits Justice and Patience. I believe they were created with the power of those four souls. And since Papyrus does still have more HP, ATK, and DF then Sans, (unless he doesn't have access to KR, which i haven't thought about yet) he could actually KILL his brother if he had a good reason to. (Like in the case of Dusttale)

I'm surprised that you didn't mention that if you spare papyrus on the genocide route and then go on a date with him he says that his special attack would have blown you away which might have hinted that papyrus can use gaster blasters.

I'm pretty sure Papyrus has Gaster Blasters. The annoying dog seems to keep stealing very powerful and important things from us, as shown with the legendary artifact in Waterfall. I think it's just Toby's clever way of hiding things that, if he didn't, would make things very easy to understand, and possibly ruin the mystery of the game.

Actually, something to note is that invincibility frames in Undertale are called *mercy invincibility* This is litterally the monsters giving us a short break when hit because they have a bit of mercy for us (note that invincibility frames are shorter the more monsters we have killed too).
So, Sans is actually able to make 1 damage per second because he show absolutely no mercy to us.
What I'm trying to say, is that even if Papyrus get hit, Sans' attacks would not inflict continuous damage, because Sans would have a LOT of mercy for Papyrus (also, monsters are able to dodge, Sans and Asgore proved it) so Papyrus might be able to dodge too.
If Papyrus happens somehow to have absolutly no mercy to us, I think we are screwed (heck, we haven't seen Asgore attacks us without mercy for us, and it's pretty hinted that he is the most powerful monster in the Underground too *if we don't count Asriel in*)

Yknow I've always thought papyrus is stronger than he seems, though he holds back his power because sans lets him in on the promise he made to toriel. Hell keep the promise even if you kill all his friends, because he made the promise to sans that he wouldn't harm/kill the human no matter what.

I know a few people that got really thrown off with the whole blue heart and having to jump over them rather than dodge. I found his boss fight easy enough but it's still possibly my favourite fight in the game for some reason.

Also remember Sans and Papyrus are the 2 sentries closest to the Ruins entrance where humans will come from meaning they are a first line of defense in a way. Could make sense that they where sent for being powerfull then.

I always thought he could control your damage and sometimes your turn. Like if you were to actually fight like that, he could make one bone equivalent of ten or more and vice versa. It would make sense to think that his special attack are energised bones that bring up like projectiles, that go faster and faster the longer you wait. If nothing else his power is akin to a super charge, it can be safe on first gear but can be deadly on second.
At the start it's like disbelief papyrus, underlab u should start playing AUs and doing theories on them
