As a teenager getting a flip phone as a break from a smartphone, I enjoy the Nokia more. It doesn't have Google Assistant but it still has voice recognition for typing (I had the Alcatel at first though so I've gotten pretty good at typing). It's a lot faster, and the flashlight and camera are a complete game changer for me. The for a teenager, I'd say that the ALcatel is a good starter flip phone but as a former flip phone owner the Nokia is better.
I agree and purchased the Alcatel My Flip 2. The main cons of the Alcatel were the lack of a flashlight and a poor camera. Honestly, very seldom do I NEED either. The fact that Google assistant is built into the Alcatel was WAY above any of the other Flip Phones I looked at. AND...The Assistant works flawlessly, especially when using your voice to type a text. No more crazy plucking at the keypad just to have it say something completely different than what you intended. Good review Skywind007...Honest & accurate. Thank you and keep 'em coming.
Thanks for this comment!! I had the Alcatel and the SOS is really important sometimes (I'm a disabeled minor so I need to be able to contact my parents quickly) and not having the SOS was a big deal. I really wanted the Nokia but no SOS was preventing me from getting it so thank you for commenting :)
Thank you...they are offering the Nokia on a special on one the TV shopping shows, but I agree the Google Assistant feature on the Alcatel is the game changer for me.
@Mark Ehrlich thats good. So it's not laggy then? I have kaios on my Alcatel phone and its laggy just as it was on my 2017 Nokia 3310 phone that likewise had kaios.
Thank U for the video. Re: Google assistant, does using this feature on the Alcatel use any of my Tracfone minutes or is it just an app included on the phone to eliminating all the button pushing to write a text?
I did a test right now and it does require a connection to the internet. It works both with your data plan and wifi. So the answer is yes, it will use up your data, therefor costing you money if you use it while you are away from your home's wifi or any other wifi.
EXCELLENT review! My compliments. Two questions: What version of KAIOS does the Alcatel have? I read somewhere online that KAIOS did eliminate Google, including Assistant, completely? Is this true? Without its Assistant the Alcatel is of no use to yours truly at all. Please inform when you can, and thanks! 🙏♐
It has KaiOS 2.5.4. I doubt Google Assistant is going away because on their website, KaiOS is still mentioning the Google Assistant. Here is a paragraph from their website: "In addition to the investment, Google and KaiOS have also agreed to work together to make Google Assistant, Google Maps, RUclips, and Google Search available to KaiOS users. These apps have been developed specifically for the KaiOS platform, which is entirely web-based, using open standards such as HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS."
Thanks. I will be buying a new tripod soon since the one I have right now doesn't aim down very well. I agree that it's pointed up too much but since I'm a low budget person, I will have to wait until I have some extra cash. I was thinking of getting a GoPro cam to attach to my head but they are so expensive and I don't know if the image would come out shaky. Thanks again.
I actually got that at the same exact Nokia flip phone for my birthday and I think it has a way better camera than the other one and it also has a better microphone which is gonna be better for calls.
You can test the S.O.S. button it you hang up in 2 seconds. It's best to do this late at night when the 911 center is less busy in case the call goes thru. The screen will read: "Emergency calling".
I thought the Alcatel won on pictures and video. In actual daily use the Nokia successor to the model reviewed here has abysmal battery life and the indicator is crude compared to the 2760. Thank you for excellent reviewing. I have subscribed.
I had an Alcatel a few years ago, and I hated that model so much that I don't even want to try another. One bad thing was the ring or ringtone was not changeable or adjustable in volume, and it was way too quiet plus seemed to blend into background sounds where I work. I was always missing calls. It had a lot of other problems, too, that I can't even remember, but I was glad to move on to a much better LG phone.
This one here is nice but I think that flip phones have their days numbered because I can tell by the design that they are not trying hard enough to make a good flip phone. I remember the original Symbian operating system which was so much better than KaiOS. KaiOS is way over simplified. I still love my flip phones but as we move on, they will become rarer and rarer, until they join pagers and mechanical typewriters in museums.
@@bnstndrd I am speculating but all basic phone with Kaios are just not improving the way they should. 2mp cameras are useless even for senior citizens.
@@skywind007 I agree. Don't get me wrong. I want these to remain basic phones. I don't want these to be smartphones in the least bit but the operating system shouldn't be so sluggish.
Does the nokia (tracfone) have a place for an sd card? I've heard different answers for this. Apparently some have a place under the battery and some don't...
Is there a tool online to identify a phone to buy based on features that are important to you? I find that I'm watching 900 videos only to find that I need to keep looking.
Can you download apps like life360 on any of these phones? Looking for a cheap flip phone for my 8yr old that I can download a tracking app on. Or can I just track her on Google maps?
I searched life360 on both devices but neither has it on the store. I tried spelling it life360, life 360, or just life, but it's not there. I searched "tracking app" but there is nothing in terms of finding the device on a map. Even the "anti theft" function on settings cannot locate the phone, it can only play a sound or erase the phone. Sadly, KaiOS is a very primitive operating system that I think might have its days numbered once today's old folks move on.
No. It claims to have a predictive typing mode but it just randomly suggest words that have nothing to do with what you are writing. In reality, you have to spell out every word.
So I’m a teen I finally got the money for a Nokia but I wanted to get some features I needed now I can live without good assistant and the Nokia looks clean ngl a break from a smartphone would be nice
No. I just did a firmware update; I downloaded the update, I installed it, and I restarted the phone 3 times just to make sure. I searched "facebook" but it's not there. I looked under the "social" category, but no luck. It's sad that they left that out on the Nokia because it's such a beautiful phone that I find myself playing around with it as much as I do with a smartphone. A phone without social media is like a car with no radio or sound system. It's a major flaw.
21:38 Can't you use wifi on the 2760? Is this a dumb question? Why can't you use apps on the nokia without service? Is there no voice to text on the nokia, so you can't voice record texts? Sorry if this is dumb..
No, only tracfone. I have seen the Nokia 2780 and Alcatel Go Flip 3 unlocked on Amazon for $94 plus tax: www.amazon.com/Alcatel-GO-FLIP-4052W-Unlocked/dp/B08MV4BDXB/ref=sr_1_4?crid=1BTK0Q2CF33WB&keywords=alcatel+my+flip+2&qid=1676111906&sprefix=alcatel+my%2Caps%2C118&sr=8-4
I'm having a hard time finding a review that evaluates the things that are actually important to me. These are both Tracfones... does either of them offer triple minutes or double minutes? Does either one of them display the remaining minutes and days?
TracFone only triples minutes for smartphone and doubles minutes for basic phones. So the answer is no, you will not be able to triple the minutes for the flip phones shown in this video. Both are considered basic phones by Tracfone. The Tracfone website also said that the minute tripling only works with plans that are not "smartphone only" plans. I know that's confusing but that's what I looked up on Tracfone. As far as displaying minutes and days, while this information is not on the front screen, you can find it by pressing the UP navigation button. Pressing the UP navigation key will open the internet browser and send you to the TracFone portal. The first time you look up this information by pressing the UP navigation button, you will have to enter your phone number. The next time you look up this information, it will remember the number so you don't have to type it again. Even if you power down the phone and turn it on again, it will remember your number. Strangely enough, it does not ask for any other verification information, just the phone number. The information that you get is: Remaining TEXTS, MINUTES, DATA, and RENEWAL DATE. I tested this on both phones and it gave me the same information, so they are accurate.
You state you aren't going to measure it but size is one of the most important issues with these newer flip phones. If you look them up on line they give the same dimensions for both. It would have been nice if ya had actually measured them. Too Large! We keep going backwards in time. Started it out with huge cell phones got them all the way down to a perfect size small flip phone only to have them huge again. Even the new flip dumb phones like this one is a lot larger than what we want. Seniors cannot hold them due to the fact they are too large open or closed. When open they are considerably larger than our smartphones. Even you have to open and close it with 2 hands. Did anyone else notice the quality of the phones are awful. Yes. In particular the STT (speech to text). A lot of people have been asking about WhatsApp. Only the Alcatel supports WhatsApp at this time and only the Alcatel supports STT. But not having a flash is a major handicap for a phone in 2024. The last time I had a phone without a flash was in 2005.
