Same lol. My only theory is that this segment is a huge meta-joke because everyone expected him to talk about the Mueller report or something. This feels like one of those "And now, This" segments except stretched into a main story. That's the only guess I have. I mean, the story's vaguely interesting, but it's not only unimportant, it's aggressively unimportant.
The video doesn't even focus on the impact on the city - the city's reaction is just mentioned tangentially. This feels like something that might interest his younger writers but I can't really imagine Oliver's actual opinions about this are as strong as he's making them out to be in the video, given that he's a 41 year old British man. If it's not a meta-joke maybe HBO just wanted them to come up with a story that would go viral and attract attention to the show across the world. Otherwise... I'm just confused. Maybe it's just because I'm out of touch.

Chijohn’s story was the most wholesome thing I’ve ever seen. John Oliver is the best man on this damn planet for making this mascot.
What a wholesome cultural exchange. I know it's a small thing, but there aren't really any other circumstances where John Oliver would have a cultural connection to a little fishing town in Japan and that's honestly pretty sweet.
Meanwhile in 200 years:

I fell down the rabbit hole of RUclips back to this video. And now why am I crying like a baby?! Has 2021 been so hard that the story of an otter mascot making friends with different an international otter mascot makes me feel things again?!!
I've watched this too many times. I absolutely love your enthusiasm for the mascots. I want to mimic that in life, and be that happy about events the way you are about these beautiful creatures. Well done
