The commentary for this thing is like an Old Spice commercial. "Look to the left. Now right. Now back to the left. The left side of the map is now the right side. The tickets are now diamonds. I'm on a horse."
This game is inexplicably being ported to Switch. The announcement trailer for this port features a gameplay snippet in which the player gets into a battle and quickly dies at the start of the game. This is then followed with the tagline "we now understand... how cruel the world can be."
oh my god I thought this was a meme but no, it's real, and the company doing the re-release is AWFUL so this is going to be a cluster fuck of disastrous proportions
The only thing I knew about this game is that characters age as you level up. You start with children and end with young adults, which I think is such a cool concept for a rpg that I'm saddened it's wasted on such a lame game.
Consider that the developer basically invented the concept if it's such an early game. I also fucking love the idea, it makes more sense than a nobody becoming the strongest person in existence in 40 hours or whatever.
I "feel" like Final Fantasy 1 had a sort of similar idea where your characters get a 'new class' at about 2/3rds of the game but are clearly older and more experienced when you class up. Sad that they just gave up on the concept completely. Also yeah Wizardry is like that but it fking sucks because your best characters just suddenly die when you need them most.
this is probably my favourite run of this GDQ. I think what really sells it is how you'd think based on it just being a bad JRPG that it would get very boring to watch for more than 5 minutes, however it somehow continually gets worse and worse every second
I know why you can't run from battles until much later on...it's a bloomin' SKILL you learn once you hit a particular level to have the ability to RUN FROM BATTLE....I kid you not...
I don't know about everyone else but I'm impressed this game was a solo project. If it wasn't for that short deadline, this game probably could've turned out decent for its time.
I highly doubt it, there were plenty of good RPGs then. Also Ultima was made by one dude, and that is a classic, so it’s not the fact that it only had one dude working on it.
@@thomasffrench3639 It's that it was one guy with a tight deadline working with unfamiliar hardware developing a game in an unfamiliar format. Recipe for disaster. But hey, at least there was a decent fan remake.
When I was younger, and I played the original Dragon Warrior, I thought to myself, "how the hell was this game so popular?" Having seen its competition, I guess I have my answer
Dragon Warrior is popular because it’s a solid game that was unique for it’s time before other RPGs came into console. And this game is worse than most of the other RPGs released. There were a lot of good games released on the original Famicom before the 16 bit era.
By being accessible and being first. Dragon Quest basically just simplified the mechanics and provided far more visual feedback to what you would see in PC RPGS of the time. There were plenty of games that improved on the Dragon's Quest formula or went in new and interesting directions with it. But, the Japanese already fell in love with the original and that has carried the series all this time.
I HAVE AN ANSWER: the lady enemy that can heal herself is a "donna," which is Italian for "lady." Really weird reading all those loan words in hiragana. It's roughly said "dawn-uh."
@@scottrauch1261 Well it's worth noting that Don/Donna are also often associated with the Mafia. So... she's a Mafia boss? I'm not sure how that means she can heal?
The game uses the katakana. That´s the reason the japanese don´t understand that the game what´s saying because the katana is uses for pronounce the words of the others languages in japanese. Things that nobody is asking me. :D
The Japanese phrase the runner said at the beginning: 伝説のクソゲー = Densetsu no kusoge = "the shitty game of legend" (or "the legendary shitty game") Edit: couch said the nicer version at 24:31 Also: 星をみるひと = hoshi wo(pronounced O) miru hiro = people who look at the stars (better title in English might just be "stargazers.") Edit: they said this at 26:00
But is there any explanation as to why the game uses hiragana for half of its title instead of just having 星を見る人? Or do I not yet know enough Japanese (currently teaching myself) to understand why that's normal?
@@Kraigon42 For the title screen it was likely just a stylistic choice that happens all the time. For the game itself, famicom games almost never had kanji but they usually had katakana so its odd to see "telepathy" etc written in hiragana.
It's like watching terrible movies. It's way more fun if there's more people watching it, and that's what AGDQ feels like. They'd be less fun to play yourself, but if you got some friends together and played a terrible game, then it would be fun.
@@MortimerZabi Exactly my thought process. For normal good games everything seems like you just need skill so you can do things normally. For these games ... beating the game AT ALL is an achievement (which we maybe also need more of in modern games).
Have you heard? This game is getting rereleased onto the Switch. No, I am not pulling your leg. Some company deemed it a good investment to buy the copyright a few years ago, and is now unleashing the Legendary Shitty Game upon the next generation.
"You are given an ultimatum between two bad options. You can choose to fight instead but if you fight you auto lose." In the right kind of game this would be brilliant.
The japanese name is ファミコン, or Famicon, short for ファミリコンピュータ Famirikonpyuuta (Family computer). The symbol ン can be romanized as both; Famicom makes a bit more sense from an English speaker's pov, Famicon from a Japanese speaker's. Dowolf speaks both.

truly the most appropriate thing to continue the legacy of densetsu no kusoge
@@Pixeel_XIIIbecause Japan thinks that bad games are cool. It’s very famous over there so it’s a cult classic

Earlier RPGs like Wizardry and Might & Magic actually did it first, although this game does it differently.
good old wizardry did this, iirc they age when they level up. still it sucks cuz they can die lol

When I was younger, and I played the original Dragon Warrior, I thought to myself, "how the hell was this game so popular?"

Indeed, a crapton of really, really bad JRPGs, with a few highlights here and there.Probably even more so on the SNES and PSX later on.

I don't know why, but I enjoy watching speed runs of bad games.
Me too. My hypothesis is that because it takes monstrous skill to make the unplayable not just playable, but quickly beatable.

i love watching speedruns of games ive never heard of, only to be lost throughout the duration of the entire video.
Gotta hand it to those dolphins, they just wanted it more.
I love how he hyped everyone up for the final battle just to reveal that there was none
There is in the remake, and it's something to behold.
All the references to the 'GDQ Flu' in the AGDQ 2020 runs hit kinda different now.

What. A. Game.
emphasis on the "what."
This is like EarthBound Beginnings, but GODAWFUL.
More like Final Fantasy I but "designed" and programmed even worse.
This is the strongest amount of deja vu i have ever felt
Oh my God didn't even know this game could be speedrun'd
One of my favorite speedruns ever. The game is so weird and janky, you gotta love what a hot mess it is.
You know, that is really the only way this game should have ended.
Battle sprites do look dope, though.
ur moonwalking is so cool and amazing that everyone nearby wants to see it so it brings the npcs to u lol
What have you guys done
IT'S GETTING AN SWITCH RELEASE NOW. Possibly in English, too.
Wow...this game is something else. Could this be the worst RPG ever made? Animorphs was bad, but this is even more broken and weird.
It's definitely a contender for worst RPG ever made; heck, for worst GAME ever made!
It seems like even the most basic RPG maker game some kid posted on the Internet wouldn't be... so fundamentally broken in the way this one is.
It would be very difficult to classify an RPG as being worse than this. I mean, for starters, things function in most RPGs.
I didn't think it could be done, but someone not only beat one of the worst RPGs ever made, they speedran it!
In case anyone is keeping an eye on this game, apparently City Connection has announced this for Switch. Not a joke. O.o

I have so many questions on what is going on with this mess of a game
Am I the only person in this world that unironically loves this game?
Statistically? No. The game has a charm to it, mostly helped by the surprisingly good music.
I love the fact that it exists, but I would never actually play it. I would play the fan remake though, if someone ever translates it.
Love how people take apart terrible games like this
I can't decide if this is better than Bokosuka Wars or not...
Its both better and worse.
Its actual gameplay that isnt coinflipping but its also way longer.
Does he keep saying "Famicon"? It's Famicom! Anyway, awesome run!

Good job completing this terrible game. Hard to believe someone would waste time trying to learn this game.
One of the most ugly games ever
