- Sunday is NOT the Sabbath
Following Jesus is not about becoming Jewish or observing Jewish traditions or becoming “7th Day Adventist” in order to keep the 4th commandment. Lots of people think that in order to keep the commandments of God you have to keep the 4th commandment as the Jews or the “7th Day Adventists”, that you have to do no physical work on those days, you can’t lift a finger, you have to go to church and read your Bible on Saturday in order to keep the Sabbath… There’s a bunch of other rules of course also, but they’re very legalistic about Saturday, thinking that the Sabbath is Saturday. The Sabbath is NOT Sunday, nor is the Sabbath Saturday. I want to read to you from Hebrews about the Sabbath Day Rest, this is found in Hebrews chapter 4. “For He (being God) has spoken in a certain place of the seventh day in this way; “And God rested on the seventh day from all His works” and again in this place: “They shall NOT enter My rest” Since therefore it remains that some must enter it, and those to who it was first preached did not enter because of disobedience, (Those of course were the Jews) again He designates a certain day, saying in David, “TODAY, after such a long time, as it has been said: “TODAY if you will hear His voice, do NOT harden your hearts.” (So, what is the day, is it Saturday, is it Sunday? The writer is saying NO, it is TODAY! Listen.) For IF Joshua had given them rest, then He would not afterward have spoken of another day. There remains therefore a rest for the people of God. For he who has entered His rest has himself also ceased from his works as God did from His. (So, in what way has someone rested from their works? It’s not by keeping the 4th commandment in going to church on Saturday or Sunday, the rest comes from finding the LORD and resting in HIM as the Day. We read on to see how we truly keep the Sabbath.) Verse 11: “Let us therefore be diligent to enter THAT Rest, least anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the divisions of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Well, what is this Word of God? Is it the Bible? Is it a Saturday? Is it a Sunday? What are we talking about here? Let’s read on Verse 13) And there is NO creature hidden from HIS sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of HIM to whom we must give account. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, JESUS the SON OF GOD, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” JESUS is our High Priest, HE is the Day! The day is not Saturday, the day is not Sunday, the day is not fulfilled in going to church or not working. It is fulfilled in JESUS and resting in Him. IF we rest in Jesus, if we obey Him, if we hear HIS words WE KEEP THE 4th COMMANDMENT. The 4th commandment is not kept by becoming Jewish or 7th Day Adventist or keeping Jewish traditions or by going to church on Saturday or on Sunday. It is kept by obeying Jesus, because JESUS IS THE LORD OF THE SABBATH! Do you know JESUS? Or do you just know religion? May the grace of Jesus be with you.
