  • I started to hear a knocking sound coming from the front so I decided to take a look.. I got it up on the wheel ramps so I could get underneath. Unfortunately, I didn't find the source of the knocking. I also removed the air cleaner with no success. With the MoT due I decided to leave it and see if the knocking problem would be picked up during the test.
EDIT: When it went through the MoT, it failed on loose nearside damper bolts so that was probably the cause of the knocking sound. I'll know once I've replaced the front coil springs (the offside one was broken so I've got to replace both).
PLEASE NOTE: I’m just a DIY mechanic. I try to do things the correct way but sometimes I have to manage with what I have. Please treat this video as a “how-I-did-it” rather than a “how-to”.

Did u check the 2 strut bolts that bolt to the hub? Did it not mention that they were loose on the mot fail sheet?

Yeah, that's what it is. It will be coming apart when I replace the front coil springs.

It was the strut top mounts. I've since parted company with the C4GP and it has been replaced with a Volvo XC90.

Could it be a top mount bearing or broken spring? I've had that on my wife's astra make the same sort of noise.

The MoT picked up a broken offside coil spring but that wasn't the cause of the knocking sound.

Possibly slack in the drive shaft or bushes of some sort. I'll wait for you're second part to find out what it was.

Ian, it was the bolts where the damper is attached to the upright. They were loose. They've got to come off because I need to replace both front coil springs. They'll be getting some thread lock on the when I put it back together.

Having a similar problem with my regular C4 1.6 HDI 2008.
Rattling noise appeared out of nowhere - on the drivers side somewhere under the hood closer to windshield when driving over bumps and smaller holes. Interesting thing is that it stops when I press the brake. Mechanic checked everything that could be suspicious, plastics, bolts, nuts, tightened everything... brakes, stabilizers and steering column is good.
    Any hint or help?

Could be a strut top mount. That's what the problem was on mine.

So, the problem was with stabilizers. Cheap repair but hard to diagnose. No rattle anymore!

The knocking sound has come back to haunt me. It now needs new strut tops. My accent should've been a big clue. I'm in West Yorkshire.

My MoT man found out what the problem was and it was one of the MoT failure points.
