This type of arm workout was pretty popular in the golden era among bodybuilders as well, the principle of a lot of work in a short amount of time is a pretty sure fire way to grow, especially if you are keeping the sets and rep quality as clean as this.
I already do this every wednesday in my split. 2 bi/tri supersets and 2 forearm isolations supersetted afterwards. Just the best arm pump.. all the bluuuud
I just want to say I love this work and I tried it out for the first time today and man is based on the arms. Thank you very much I’m adding this into my permanent exercise routine
I tried this today & it's terrific for arms, got such a great pump!. I tried another exercise of Dr. Mike's but didn't think it suited me as well, as it was dips to hit the triceps & it was harder to isolate that muscle & it hurt my shoulders too much.
You should make videos with background music and where you count the reps and is supportive (like in this video) so that anyone can work out in their gym and listen to you while they workout with their sets. ;)
Wow. Validation! Sometimes I wonder if I am doing something right and then something like this comes along. Watched this on a Sunday night. Tomorrow is Bicep/Tricep day. Perfect timing.

Love me a good antagonistic arms Superset. I often hit ez bar curls SS with skullcrushers. After about 4 sets my arms are so pumped they feel like they are going to burst.
Hi Dr. Mike, I wanted to thank you for the valuable content you create. Your videos have been incredibly helpful to me, and I truly appreciate the effort you put into sharing your knowledge and expertise. As a bit of constructive feedback, I've noticed some trainers in your videos wear Crocs while exercising. I believe that avoiding such casual footwear could enhance the overall appearance and professionalism of your channel. Thanks again for all that you do!
I love the cable arm workout. But I leaned from juji to do the bicep on the ground laying on back with arm blaster holder. This takes my back out of it.
I love this channel and so glad I've been introduced to it it took my workouts up so much guys. I was first introduced to this channel by watching Jonni shreve now I'm stuck here and can't get enough
What are the advantages, if any, of bringing your elbows forward versus keeping them by your side during the curls? I've always heard that proper form is keeping your elbows tucked.
This is like my whole training program, I do push/ pull, all antagonistic supersets, lots of myo reps. I find it far more efficient than a PPL for my body. 2 upper body 75 minute Push/Pull workouts a week and my gains have never been better.
You note the number of myo breaks at least, and potentially even count the myorep sets individually. Like if you got 25 total reps, that might be "with two breaks" or "15,6,4." - Dr. Mike
I'll log the reps as though I hit the full amount, but clarify in my notes. So, say it was 20 total reps, I'll log Weight x 20 (15, 3m, 2m). I never do myo reps on lifts where I particularly care about my per rep PRs, so I don't care it if skews things a bit by making my 20+ rep maxes look higher than they are if I were doing them strict
Thanks for this great video! Dear Dr Mike, over many years I've tried different approaches to busting my arms, including yours, but every time I start any serious work, my ebow joints fail me in some way (usually some kind of tendon inflammation) within 4-5 months. So I'm out of training for 5-6-7 months. Can you give any advice on this? P.S. TRT has helped a little bit- my joints went down only on my left arm, only after 10 months and only on the bicep side.
Dr. Mike and Jared, BTW, Props Jared, Stormtrooper workout When I do the cable curls it kills my shoulder. I tore my rotator cuff at 19 years old and have dealt with the pain since even after the rehab. Would it be better to not let my elbows float forward during the concentric part? I would have to use considerably less weight to do this but maybe it would lessen the pain. I don't even do them anymore due to the pain. Thnkx Fellas
I must be an expert now. TFR is paying off. I did this exact workout last night. (Almost) I never said "I can't do this" lol. I'm kidding I cried twice.
I do what I call antagonistic “lazy supersets” every workout. I take enough rest to catch my breath a little, maybe a little extra depending on the muscle groups, then go. You still save time and get pretty substantial rest breaks, between the sets of the same exercise. If you go beyond antagonist it can work even better. You can take almost any two upper body exercises and find some overlap from the supporting systems, like forearms for bis/tris, shoulders sometimes from the stabilizing that they may do, or cardio from compounds. But lateral raises and leg extensions? Virtually nothing
Yea, there is also a certain amount of etiquette involved with that aspect too. You don't want to be "that" douche who takes up multiple machines at once when the gym is busy, even if they both happened to be free at that moment in time. Nothing more annoying than wanting to use a piece of equipment and you see some half ass taking up multiple pieces at the gym.
I do a lot of arm supersets like this. Although instead of resting 30 seconds between pairs, I rest like 2 minutes. I think this makes them more enjoyable, and I get more reps. But am I missing benefits by not shortening the rest, or does it not make a difference. I get huge pumps the way I do them today.
I`m pretty sure RP have a video on this... So basically shorter rest periods do save a lot of time (and might even help achieve a pump) but they do not provide any extra hypertrophic effect. For the most part and when time isn`t as much of a factor, it`s pretty clear that sufficent rest of the muscle and the cardio system will lead to more reps and hence more gains. Supersetting with next to no rest like this mainly gives the advantage to put plenty of stimulus in a short period of time and because of that makes sense in a number of scenarios. But you are not missing out on any hypertrophic benefits by resting 2 minutes instead of 30 seconds.
@@domate5081 Great comment! i was about to say something like this tho! ... i usually super-set bi / tris 3 times a week for 7 sets of each, 2 min rest like Shawn.
@@RenaissancePeriodization cool, thanks for the response. That was baseline understanding as well. I like the compromise myself, but I can see how others might want to save more time.
I do a full body split and every workout is made up of antagonistic pushes and pulls. I usually pair deadlifts and squats with something decompressive like dips or chins. I don't call them super sets cuz I'm not always trying to burn through the sets of two heavy compounds.
Noticed on the bicep curls he is moving his elbows - is that something we should look to do at the top of the movement ? I tend to keep my elbows in place for both bicep curls and tricep where I do as minimal movement as possible.
What is the reasoning behind not doing cable curls + an overhead extension instead of pushdowns? My understanding is that pushdowns are somewhat redundant as they work the same head of the tricep as presses and most other compound tricep movements.
Antogonistic supersets are great for smaller muscle groups, can also be used for bigger muscle groups when you’re just starting out in your strength journey. Get a lot of volume in without paying the cost of time or systemic fatigue.
If you really wanted to save time, why wouldn't you just do myoreps for each exercise? I.e. with 3-4 myorep sets per exercise, with the first bicep exercise followed by the first tricep exercise, and then same for the 2nd pair. That would make the workout even faster as you wouldn't have to do the lead-in reps for each set but instead accumulate mostly effective reps. Thoughts?
What's the benefit in bringing elbows from your side toward the roof at the top of the curl? If you're squeezing your biceps, isn't that just a slight rotation of the shoulder? Or what am I missing?
One of the function of the biceps is shoulder flexion. It's not just elbow flexion. You're missing out some of the range if you're not bringing a little bit of shoulder movement into the work.
