3 Mistakes We Make about the Amish

  • Amish get a lot of interest and attention from non-Amish people. Over the years I've noticed these misconceptions and things we get wrong about the Amish. Would you agree?
My name is Erik Wesner and I'm not Amish. Back in 2004, I met the Amish while selling books. Since then, I've visited 5,000+ Amish homes & dozens of Amish communities. My book on Amish business, Success Made Simple: An Inside Look at Why Amish Businesses Thrive, was published in 2010. I run the Amish America website: amishamerica.com/

I like when you pointed out the danger in using "always" and "never" about the Amish. While they share a culture, they are also individuals. When I was attending births in Amish homes, I noticed some of the ways they differed from one another- one young father was very interested in emergency medical services. One mother was artistic and earned money by painting bird houses an Amish man built. Another young woman loved riding horses- she owned her own horse and would go to ride it wearing blue jeans under her cotton dress. 😂 Individuals within a culture.

Hi Erik, another great video! I speak from my experiences with the Amish. I find them hardworking, smart, and friendly. I think what bothers me most is some people thinking they are not smart because they don't go to high school/college. They run large farms and have many other successful businesses. I love the bulk stores and greenhouses. They put metal roofs on our house and garage. They were here early and relieved each other for break so the work didn't stop until the job was completed. They had a driver and trailer with a generator. I would recommend them anytime!

      @AmishAmerica  2 года назад +6

Right, great point. "Smarts" don't come from school necessarily. In fact that can sometimes have the opposite effect. There is also wisdom, intelligence, street-smarts, shrewdness, and a host of other measures of people's mental ability and skill that don't come from a classroom 👍

I know many Amish people and love them all. Their generosity, compassion, care for others, their animals, working in communion with people and animals, is a wonderful life, compared to other people's lives. Though I am not Amish, I love the old fashioned way of living and for the majority do that myself.
I produced and filmed a documentary in the 1990s called Life During the Civil War Era. When a 4 wheeler car sank a muddy field outside of where we were shooting in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the reenactors used their horses to pull and manpower to push the stranded vehicle out of its predicament. The vehicle, which belonged to a spectator had sunk 6" into the field. Because it had rained heavily earlier that day, we wrapped up
production shortly after the rain ceased. That's how we discovered the vehicle.

Great content, very thought provoking as always. I myself find that many people generalize about the Amish, as you mentioned. That they are uneducated, or somehow unintelligent is a very common misconception in the "english" world. I have personally learned so much from them! It's sad that for most, education in a formal classroom setting is the only acceptable way to learn! One of the best things about RUclips is channels like yours that educate as well as entertain.

Glad you found it so, and well put. There is wisdom, intelligence, book-smarts, street-smarts, and much more. I can understand those Amish who deeply crave more book learning however, and different career possibilities, and in some cases that leads them to choose a non-Amish life. You'll see stories on folks like this from time to time, there was one recently on an Amish-raised man who became a doctor. But even staying within the Amish people can of course still study topics of interest on their own. Thanks for the kind words👍

For the past 50 years I've had many Amish friends. They were all Old-Order horse & buggy Amish. Some were the same age as my parents, a few were older and several were my age or younger. (I was 19 at the time.) Most have been honest, hard working people with a great sense of humor. One of these women, her name was Mary, taught me how to do canning and another taught me how to do hand quilting. I still do both of these things. And then there were the Amish men who built our barn back in 2010. A few months after it was finished, the Amish man in charge came to visit with 2 of the men who actually worked on the barn. They had a driver who brought them up here from Holmes County, Ohio. Even though they had been paid, they did not finish the job. Plus they stole a lot of the building supplies we had already paid for. So I felt really good about tipping off the company who delivered the stone to our site because they had not been paid for that stone. They showed up when the Amish man in charge was sitting at our kitchen table. He demanded payment and got it. If they had not paid him, the stone man would have called the police. So yes, there are good Amish and bad. Thankfully, most are the Good variety!

I suspect some of the negative claims are from Amish who left their belief system and are disillusioned. Sometimes they generalize based on negative things they experienced. An example is a woman who claimed Amish in general are incestuous. She claimed to be molested by a brother and generalized her experience to all Amish men.

Every demographic in our modern society has good and bad. The Amish are no exception (I like how the one member of the Amish put it to you, 'Amish are people too'). It goes without saying that all those different demographics tend to get judged by that one member of their group who essentially spits on all of them and ends up in the newspapers or on news broadcasts. We can thank the media for painting all of them with such a broad brush because it sells their written or talking head dogma.

Spot on, in terms of broadening our comprehension level. Less generalizations for me! One thing I often hear among "English" folk who live near Amish communities. "They don't treat their animals well". I live in the NY/PA area of the States. I have heard this for numerous years. Has anyone else heard this "complaint" about the Amish as it relates to their "animals" which are so needed on their farms?

You are right, they are just people who live a particular way of life. They are neither saints nor sinners but like all of us have both good and bad. One thing that has distorted outsiders' perception of the Amish is those syrupy Amish romance novels that are formulaic and give only the author's imaginative view of Amish life. The few interactions I have had with Amish folk have gone generally well, but there are some things I find annoying.

Very good points made in the vid. I have also noticed that people tend to make assumptions without a sound basis of understanding, ie "I think the Amish would do such and so and so because ....." There is widespread misunderstanding of why the Amish choose which technology to use and which they reject.
It helps to have detailed knowledge of the Bible text, as the Amish culture is in large part based on their understanding of Biblical instruction.

    Dear Erik,
Another fine and thoughtful programme. Because I have been a student of the Amish for many years, I have had to correct my perceptions over the years. Recently, for example, I have had to update my perceptions of how the mainstream Amish live. I had not kept up with the changes found among them.
In the past, and even currently, I still have a tendency to idealize the Amish. I have to keep this in check. I will say this, I have never been sentimental about their whole way of life. Nevertheless, I continue to see the importance of their whole way of life for Christians during our present times. On many counts, they point to a better way.
Thank you, Erik, for bringing up this topic. It is a very good one, and you handled it masterfully.
    Sincerely,
    Larry Clarence Lewis

I live near to Lancaster PA. Lots of Amish and lots of tourists. There is a steady tourist trade built up there based on Amish culture. Granted, the folks who are coming, bus loads at a time, don’t mean any harm or disrespect. It sort of bothers me that they are seen as a tourist attraction. Sometimes I wonder if they feel like they are living under a bubble or microscope. Yet, I also feel that if you want to live a life so very different from mainstream American society you are inevitably bound to attract attention

I think you’re right. People have a tendency to be extreme. Not seeing people as people, but only seeing them either completely to one end of the pendulum or the other. And many don’t like people who aren’t just like them. For these nothing is good enough. I respect the Amish. I believe that the majority of Amish focus on Bible, family, working hard and doing a good job. No one is perfect.

I think this is an excellent overview. I don't know any Amish, I don't currently live in Amish country, but I live just across the border from a Mennonite community in Ontario, Canada, who came to shop at the store where I worked, and I waited on them; and I once lived in Western New York near an Amish community that traveled by train. I used to see them at the train station when I dropped my son off, because he used to do a lot of travel by train. So I'm not speaking from any expertise on the Amish. But I can speak from my expertise on being Catholic since infancy 😂 I've heard the same types of characterizations about my own religion. It can get pretty outlandish. But people don't know what they don't know. That's understandable. It's only a problem if the misconceptions come from bad will against others. I sincerely believe that everyone should be Catholic, I mean _truly_ Catholic, yet I get defensive when groups like the Amish are mischaracterized -- or Mormons, or Jehovah's Witnesses, or whoever. God calls us all to Himself, and the door is opened to all who sincerely seek Him. I was raised Catholic, and left to explore other religions before I found my way home. There might be Amish who say they're the only ones going to heaven, but there are also Amish who say that God calls different people in different ways, that not everyone is called to be Amish, but that all are called to love and serve Him. As for any conversions, my tradition teaches that the Holy Spirit leads people to convert, we can't convert anyone. And God meets us where we are, drawing us to become more holy, not leaving us in sin. So I'm pretty sure that mischaracterizing people of different religions isn't going to encourage anyone to conversion. We have to trust God to work in us and in others.

I work for a health care facility and there was a young Amish boy brought in that was hurt pretty badly. The ER doctor wanted to fly him via medical helecopter to a larger facility and the parents refused. I kind of understand but then again I can't understand how they could make their child "suffer" the ambulance ride. Ambulance rides are not fun at all. There was a movie I watched called Witness. A lot of other people watched that movie. They formed opinions about the Amish based on that movie. When I rewatch it now, I come to very different conclusions than most people did when it was new. After talking with a few of my friends that knew the Amish, what was depicted in the movie was likely not accurate, and even if it was it probably was not for the entire group. But I suppose that the difference when watching a movie at 20 years old versus watching it when you're 50. I assume that same mentality crosses over to seeing actual people and not a movie

I wonder what people would think about misconceptions concerning their own culture and religion? For example what if all Catholics were judged the same? Or protestants? What about the " spiritual but not religious " phonies? People should remember the larger the group and more general you have to be, the more exceptions there will be.

I appreciate your comments and concur with your points made here. I would also say that I have done all of them at some time or another.
An additional point I would make is: Not all Amish family members are members of the church. Some are too young amd others simply have not made that decision at a particular point in time. So those individuals don't necessarily have to follow all the same requirements as an actual church member.
Also, since moving to a very Amish area, i have realized that there are large numbers of Amish that "live the lifestyle" but have left the church. Among them are large groups of what I call Evangelical Amish. They look Amish but are no longer "under Amish rule." So dont be so quick to jump to conclusions -- me included!

I’ve met Amish people fro Eastern Pa., Western PA. an Central Oh. I’ve never had a bad experience with any of them. They all do things a little different. Just like city people do things a little, more like a lot different, than country people. People should just live their own life and let others do their thing.

One myth I hear is that the Amish are flat-out pacifists. Not true. If a violent crime occurs in their community they can become very angry about it. However, the older community members may keep calm & level-headed & simply say, "It was God's will." While younger community members may clearly express their anger or disgust & say exactly what they think - but, to their credit, somewhat diplomatically. I experienced this generational thought difference, through my PA Amish customers, after the schoolhouse tragedy. It was emotionally mind-blowing, hearing the elder's calm coping words. But at the same time, also very traumatic, hearing the anger, confusion & pain in the younger Amish men's comments & voices. For awhile I was afraid their community would divide or collapse under the private & public strain. But they had much more faith & forgiveness in them than I or anyone expected, thank God.

I know that there are usually two types of Amish people, you have "Old Order" and they are usually less inclined to use some things we "Englischers" use today, like tractors, cars, and electronics, since they consider those things to be the tools of the devil. And the "New Order" are more inclined to use those.

Although the Amish started in Germany and Switzerland the Amish are true Americans they are free to live their lives and their religious beliefs. And if they don't agree with their Church's rules they can start another or leave the church .
Maybe a simplified version and others have sacrifice more for America but the fruit is a tolerant Society .
Unfortunately there are many that are no longer tolerant , you agree with them or you're a Nazi or fascist or whatever very disappointing

Thanks, for sharing all of this. I think revival needs to be brought to the church. I go into a Swartentruber families home several times a wk. Years ago, I was asked to help with birth with one of the families. There wasn't time to call me (it was their 8th child). Sadly, I missed this. They had their 3rd dwarf baby. I have watched several movies about Amish. The most compelling being "Murder in Amish country(it made me look at them differently).... I do try extra hard to get close to the children(to let them trust me). I would recommend that people read if you deal with these people; The Amish Way book(if I buy a copy I may see what they think it it), visit Amish Rescue Mission, Mission to Amish people, also watch Breaking the Silence on y-tube. We live in WI. with close to 100+ Amish within 3 miles of our farm.

This was an excellent video. There are so many comments and questions I would like to say but I will abstain because if I get started, I will have a book. Ha Ha. I do have one overriding question that I have to ask. I saw the picture at 1:56 of an Amish father with his 3 sons and 1 daughter. The youngest son is wearing a red handkerchief on his head. I am very curious why this might be. My only possible conclusion was that he had been burned or injured in some way and needed to keep his head covered for protection but could not wear a hat because of discomfort.
I will make one other comment about people who call the Amish hypocrites. We are all hypocrites in some way or another. If you think that you are not, then you are a bigger hypocrite than the rest. 🤔

Good question, I don't know the answer. So the family you see here is from a relatively conservative group called the Nebraska Amish. I've seen that paisley handkerchief headwear before most often in another very conservative group in Tennessee, men there even sometimes wear them tied up headband-style. It might just be a head covering that they use in this particular group

Google Edward Gingerich (Crawford County, PA), Samuel Borntreger (Barren County, KY), and Eli Weaver (Apple Creek, OH). In one case (Gingerich), he was mentally ill.
