they did do, but of course they have to chooae a selection of songs so i guess they rotate around

I don't think that's the main theme, its bob omb battlefield. the main theme is the super Mario theme when you start up the game
I guess it could but that's because it the most popluar of the game
+Joseph Zell Bob-omb Battlefield *IS* the main theme of the game. The fact that its melody is used in various other tracks of the game, like the opening theme after Peach reads the letter to Mario, and when you get a star.
Also, Bob-omb Battlefield, Cool Cool Mountain, and Slider are all different versions of the same overall tune. These three themes are in more than half the levels of the game, so I think it's pretty ridiculous *not* to consider it otherwise.

+Kyree S. Williams The main theme is used throughout other tracks most of the time. Silder, Snow Mountain, and Bom-omb Battlefield all use the same progression of notes. How's that proof?

Sounds like a mid 1900s gangster theme.
Such an awesome group. Always as a kid and sometimes even now, the end credits music of SM64 made me cry. It's like you journeyed on awesome adventure and it finally came to an end when you didn't want it to, like a really great game just finished. I know it can ways be replayed, but you can neve have the same First-Time Experience twice :'D
my goodness, the ending theme made me tear up a bit when the piano started... It brings back so many good memories... amazing job!

There's plenty of covers on youtube played by plenty of different instruments. Most of which hold true to the original, depending on the arrangement by the artist.

Game studios should consider reusing *musical* assets too, when the compositions are astoundingly good, as it was the the case for most of SM64 tracks, or practically every bits of the Final Fantasy Tactics score.
New music is great, but when the quality's not there (think Donkey Kong Country Returns non-remixes for instance), a reimagined older track would fare much better.
