You are loved Paul. This song came in 1988. I graduated high school in 1986 and in July 1987 my Dad and Brother were killed in a car wreck. So when my mom passed in July 2019 I came back to this song for solice. Best vocals on this planet. I'd give money to talk to you. I love everything you touch, it's golden.
Sorry for all of the immense loss you’ve endured. Music is good medicine, helps us cope, helps us remember, helps us cry and find some joy too, thankfully. And Paul Carrack’s music and voice is more medicinal than most.
Jesus, man. I just lose it when I hear this man sing. Especially this song...losing your father, like I did in '22 - it just isn't easy. Thank God for this song, and this singer.
HOW is Paul Carrack still singing this well? Such pure tone with so little crackle or gravel at such an advanced age is incredible, his range is still superb, and in my opinion his chops are as good, his technical choices more interesting, and his musicality richer than at any point in his career. Absolutely inspiring.
I just had a big blowup with my daughter before she and her husband moved to the other side of the world. This songs just rips me apart. Great job Paul. Unbelievable voice still!
Seen this Dude a dozen times, absolute legend, what a singer & musician, this is the best version he's ever done in my opinion. My Father was very good to me then we fell out because he didn't think my then girlfriend was good enough. We never spoke for 25 years, however when he had a sudden heart attack I went to see him. He told me he deeply regretted his judgement & I left to come home. He died 1 hour later & I wish I had the chance to say a few things to his face. Now been married to the same girl for 43 years. RIP Dad.
Paul Carrack is truly one of those voices that has aged much like a fine wine. He has covered decades with thoughtful music that brings a rich bounty of emotion to so many of us.
Paul Carrack is indeed a blessed artist - he is a great musician, he is humble, he is genial and his voice is still the same of when he started singing.
My brother and my dad a strained relationship for many years. When mom and dad needed help he stepped up big to help them. Spending time with dad as he began to fade physically and mentally helped tear down the wall that both of them had built. He was a good son to our parents. My brother told me he heard this song right after dad passed away and broke down crying.
I really love the original with the video, but this one, I love this one even more. What a voice, Paul still translates the same passion as the original, but this one is very special.
Wonderful. This song gets me every time. I was brought up by my grandad and I went against everything he said. I got jailed in 1994 for a gang fight in Glasgow. The last time my grandad saw me was when I got dragged out the house by the police. He died the day before my trial. I’ve moved on from the world of craziness (now a church pastor). I now sit with my 5 year old daughter and listen to this. She falls asleep while I sit with tears in my eyes, regretting that I never got to tell my grandad how grateful I was for him. Wish I told him this in the living years.
31 years, and Dad's never far from me. Maybe it's because I'm that much older, but the lyrics seem to become more and more true with the passing years. Enough from me for now.
What an awesome version of this song. Paul Carrack can deliver this with such feeling & emotion. Gives one pause as we go thru life and have disputes with friends & family.
I never heard a song that makes me remember and miss my Dad as much as this one. I have a hard time looking at pics of my Dad as it brings back too many memories that I know I can't get back. Value every moment you have.
sometimes as kids and even adults we come to regret not talking to those we love, we take for granted life. I'd give anything to just say one more time to my dad and mom I love you. I'm 78 now but still think of them daily
Paul this will always hunt me down for the rest of my life. The day before he passed I told him when I get out of work I will go by to see you. If can count the time that would have get me to go to his town house it would be 10 minutes no to much time but I didn’t do it. Next the white a was driven I got the call. And even though I have listened this song before every time I listen it remains me that you have to look for your parents always no matter what. By far it’s the best song ever written. May God bless you always.
I love his voice and lyrics. Paul is one of the greatest Soulsingers of our times!! Thank you Paul !! This performance hit me directly into my heart. Love and Peace to you out there !!!
I have loved Paul Carrack, and his voice since early 70’s and Ace. I listen to him on my quiet days and sing with him at the top of my voice. Love this performance so very much. Raw and classic at the same time. Oh I hope God blesses us with many more years; you’re always going to be in my heart (and on video) . I’ll keep singing with you, Paul.
My dad passed away in 2016. My son was born March 9, 2019. I finally was able to carry on his last name and named him after our first descendant. I miss you every day dad and William and I love you and mom with all our heart.
Listening to the greatest musical masterpiece ever created in my 44 years of life. I want this song played at my funeral, with a message attached ... "Very few people actually loves thy neighbor anymore." 😭😭🥰❤❤❤❤
This version is absolutely the best recorded. Paul Carrack's voice is so dynamic and soulful. This song has special meaning to me when my father passed away in my teens. Although we always had a great relationship, there was so much more I missed by not having him by my side in my adult years. I am an only child and now 75 years old.
I went to see Paul carrack in the Olympia in Dublin, he is just so special. The real deal musician. From Ace (how long) to now . Best on the planet . I’m so glad I grew up in that era
The song really reminds me of myself and my father. Didn't have a great relationship until later in life.... My early fourties things started to really get better.... Then I lost him.... I cry about every time I hear this song
Same here when my daughter was around two made plans for Myrtle Beach talked with my dad earlier in the yr ex said he not going to be around much longer. We need to go see him. So next yr got the call when ready to go back home from beach he suffered massive heart attack need to go to FL to sign to pull the plug. When got home was lying in bed exwife said quit sobbing your fault we should have been not there not drag daughter all around and now she never got to meet her granddad it's your fault.
Thank you Paul- In my near 70 yrs of years of life few songs have struck such an emotional note in my heart. This song is a lesson in life- and it is so easy to let life slip by without taking heed in this opportunity to get it right. Life is a journey that hopefully does not carry too many regrets to heaven- you have done your part in teaching this -
Thanks Paul bringing memories of when my dad passed at a young age 49 years we fell out earlier in the day but I went to a phone box to apologise he said he wasn’t feeling well and died later that evening I drank a bottle of whiskey playing this song continuously just glad we made up I was 27 years old my dad was gone ❤always been a special song to me .
Never a day goes by I’m sure!! 🙏🏻 hope mines proud I’ve made such a mess, but always said do what makes you happy, don’t let this world make you go dark. And I haven’t , the circle of friends I have keeps me going
The first time I heard this song, it moved me to tears. It still does. I relate... so many conversations I had with my dad and so many things that were left unspoken. I was on the road when I got the message that my dad had passed. I sat on the side of the highway crying and wishing I had been by his side when he left us.
This song is written from the perspective of a son who has a conflicted relationship with his father. After his father dies, he discovers that he and his dad had a much stronger bond than he ever realized, and the son regrets not saying more while his dad was alive. It was written by group founder Mike Rutherford and the Scottish songwriter B.A. Robertson; the pair also co-wrote the first Mike + The Mechanics hit, "Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground)." Both Robertson and Rutherford had recently lost their fathers when they wrote this song, making it a very personal endeavor for both of them.
Thank you. You have put words to music that I cannot. My first daughter was born when this was in the charts and exactly one month later my father died. Thank you!
I love this song so much. Such truth. I sent this song to my kids when they were old enough to understand. No way that I could have said this better. Luckily, they understand my love for music and the truth that in conveys. God bless you Paul. Thanks man. Much love to you, you graced my life with your talent…
The lyrics had been running thru my mind this morning after the death of a family member, not a father. The message of not waiting to mend fences before we die is in the lyrics so loudly and clearly that we cannot and should not ignore their truth. 👍
Wow! We saw Mike & the Mechanics tour this album in the late 80's. Paul still has it goin on! The song's profound and beautiful lyrics mean even more today than back then! Thank You.
I think this version needs rereleased in America. I'm from Oklahoma. It's meaning is more relevant today than ever before all the ones we've lost to covid.
I paid for the Dice pay-per-view of this full concert during the lockdowns. Awesome, awesome, awesome concert, Paul and the band! 👍🏻😎 Wished I could see you perform here in the States.
I love the studio/official video of this song. It is so powerful and beautiful for the soul. That being said, I am so glad to come across this performance. Paul, you sound absolutely amazing. Your voice captures the lyrics of this song just as well as the original. Great performance performance.
Paul is an amazing solo artist that has the ability to heighten moods and attitudes. His music can lift your spirits in the toughest of times. He can elevate others that are already incredible musicians. Squeeze was awesome, fun, silly and had great lyrics. I thought they were perfect and unique with their style. They couldn't sound any better. And then came Paul. His style blending with theirs absolutely enhanced the music. You can see it in the faces of the band members. They seemed to be having a blast from start to finish whereas before they seemed to be working.
Thanks Chris, great video and suggestions. Well thought and well delivered. I already have implemented some of your suggestions and will implement more in the coming weeks/months. Cheers!

A very humble and talented individual who’s played with the best and is still as great live now as he has ever been thanks 🙏 Paul x
