    I stupidly thought a how to play video would explain how to play.

      These videos are more to help people know if they want to buy it or not. Since pen/paper rpgs are mostly just a rule set, giving too much info is kinda seen as "giving the game away"

    @Snakez29 3 года назад +23

    I've been having a lot of fun reading/learning about the system so far, but I'm still having a hard time figuring out when a negative balance roll might happen. I guess the DM could just decide that someone's acting in accordance with a principle that they're not aligned with and make them roll for it?

    • @belloflostsouls
      @belloflostsouls  3 года назад +6

      Speaking in broad terms, Powered By The Apocalypse is a very narratively driven system. A lot of mechanics and effects within the game happen when it "feels right" for them to happen. Versus a more mechanically driven system (i.e. Dungeons & Dragons), which have very clearly written out triggers and effects.
      Hope that helps!

      @@belloflostsoulsGreat video! And I also like the flexibility and freedom offered by PBTA. But I have some concerns, and an idea for a system to fix them:
      I'm really worried this will lead to gameplay where players repeatedly try to perform exceptionally powerful feats of bending, and the DM will just have to tell them no over and over... also I'm confused about how basic magic use will work. Could a player create a bridge of ice across a deep ravine using a basic move, or would something like that require training or a special technique? What would it look like if an untrained/ inexperienced bender fought against a powerful bender? if magic is all cosmetic and just for flavor, then by what system would we portray the power scaling? For example: If, for narrative purposes, the DM intends for the beginner student PC, Blatara, to lose in a water bending duel against her new bending trainer. How would the DM represent the difference in ability? What would stop Blatara from just doing everything the teacher does in the duel but bigger? And then, after some training Blatara improves her skills. How would the DM portray Blatara's new increase in skill? I really wish bending was portrayed more like cantrips and spells, where players could choose from a list of bending moves.
      Sorry, this is getting long haha, but here is my hypothetical idea for a potential solution:
      the magic system could be based on a list of basic movements called Stances. Players can combine stances they know to perform more impressive feats of magic in a single turn. Combinations of stances would become Special Moves and would have to be learned and mastered using the existing system. Players could use these stances or Special Techniques while bending to complete Basic Techniques, which are outlined under the three types of approaches. Players and DM would work together to classify each Special Technique into one of the nine basic technique categories.
      Special moves could be 'wall of water', 'ice surfing', 'ice prison', or that sort of thing. Maybe there are specific moves and stances in each bending art and martial training, and players could learn them from scrolls or allies like Aang did with the water bending scroll. Each stance does a specific thing, and players could combine stances to make their own special techniques that they could mark on their character sheet and then use from then on at a discounted cost as they repeatedly practice that combination.
      For example, one stance could be "Freeze", Another could be "Push ice", another could be "Shape Ice". After learning all three, a player could make a special technique to build an ice bridge, or perhaps ice stairs, or whatever other application the player can think of, from this combination of stances. More advanced stances could offer more flexibility and creativity, and larger feats of bending, lending to an experienced character who is more proficient at bending, with less creative limitations. because there are a lot of Stances, players could conceivably create the same Special Technique by using a variety of different stances.
      A waterbender who is just starting out might have simpler stance options like "Levitate small water bubble", "Push water", "Pull water", and "Water projectile". Whatever combo the player creates, the DM and the player could work together to determine the mechanical effect by using the existing list of approaches and basic techniques.
      Alternatively, a player may decide to learn an already finished Special Technique from a trainer, rather than inventing it themselves. This gives the player the benefit of not having to find and learn all the necessary stances- the trainer would teach the characters all the prerequisite info. For example, a player who learns from Legend Uncle Iroh may be able to learn a "Dragon's Breath" special technique, without needing to independently learn the stances, "Spit fire", and "Enormous ball of flame".
      I think this is a good way to allow for players to learn and expand their bending skills over time, like in the cartoon, while also giving basic guidance to the way that players can use their magic abilities.
      ******* One final proposition: Sometimes, a player may want to use magic in a way they do not have a Special Technique or a 'stance' for. In this case, players should be able to use the "Push your Luck" or "Rely on your Training", etc... mechanics to try and improvise a new 'stance' on the spot. What the new stance does would be completely up to the player. This allows a compromise between appropriate limitations and guidance for bending based on a foundation of a list of simple moves, while also giving players maximum creativity and control.
      From my perspective this magic system isn't any more complicated or unintuitive than some of the systems already in the game. Lastly, I think players should be able to opt out of this system, making it more a 'suggestion' than a 'rule'. That way more experienced players can have the freedom to balance their own magic how they see fit.
      Thanks for reading! What are your thoughts? Please let me know!

      @LaserPuppies 3 года назад +8

      It's not a board game if that's what you're asking. This is a table top role-playing game, like Dungeons and Dragons. Basically there's a game master who organizes the game and creates the narrative. The players create their own characters and play through the story how they see fit and the game master makes the story react to the players' actions. It's kinda like a video game, but you're using the most powerful computer in the world; the human brain.
      For example: I'm planning on GM-ing for my friend group. My plan is to have it take place about 40 years after The Legend of Korra in a 1960's-esque setting and my friends will play as White Lotus Initiates. Avatar Korra has been missing for ten years and the Order of the White Lotus has taken the reigns and become a mix of Interpol and a counter-intelligence agency while they combat groups like the remnants of the Earth Empire and a resurgence of Fire Nation ultra-nationalists.

    • @belloflostsouls
      @belloflostsouls  3 года назад +5

      Powered by the Apocalypse is a framework. Like how Dungeon & Dragons has the d20 SRD that's free and open source. Same idea. So anyone can make an RPG that uses that framework with their own spin and mechanics.
      In very short summary, PbtA is roll 2d6 for everything, with 2 to 6 being a failure, 7-9 being moderate success and 10+ being full success.
      Hope that helps!

    • @Pokarface7
      @Pokarface7 2 года назад

    • @mrmiffmiff
      @mrmiffmiff 2 года назад +5

      The statistical average of a 2d6 roll is 7. In PbtA this is not merely a success, it's a partial success. This is one of PbtA's strengths and furthers the narrative in much more interesting ways.
      Also failures aren't merely "what you tried to do doesn't happen," they're "maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but here are some negative consequences that follow the fiction."
