Camping at Rock Hound State Park, New Mexico

  • In this video, I give you a look at Rock Hound State Park located just south of Deming New Mexico off Interstate 10
    Water and electric sites are $14 and dry camping is $10. Great deal considering the beautiful views and large, clean campsites offered.
    We stayed there in February 2017 and the weather was pretty decent with a few days in the 70's. We did have one windy day that led to a minor dust storm but made for a cool looking sunset.

      We have to be present in our home province of British Columbia 5 months every year to maintain residency and free healthcare. Also, the US limits Canadians to a 182-day visit per the calendar year. BC has the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Coast plus, rivers, lakes, and Islands, pretty gorgeous too. ;) Next summer we are planning a cross country trip across Canada to the Atlantic Provinces for summer as we did back in 2011. Ray, once again you've given us a wonderful overview of a gorgeous state park. The grand vistas and soothing music made me dream of being there myself. I could almost see a Wells Fargo stage coach come wheeling around the corner, or John Wayne come riding up looking for banditos, in some of those shots. The still photos really showed the green of the cactus to great effect. And those sunsets! Thanks for your effort documenting all this. Richard, San Angelo, TX

    I lived in New Mexico or over 20 years and never got to this place -- my loss! The border town you referred to is Palomas, across the line from the New Mexican town of Columbus, which Pancho Villa raided during the Mexican Revolution in the early 20th century. The state park just outside of Columbus is appropriately named Pancho Villa State Park. Enjoy your stay in La Tierra Encantada!

      I don't know when you are planning to go in November but those are temps you can expect. There are so many places nearby. With this type of weather, Dog Canyon, Three Rivers and Petroglyphs oh and of course White Sands National Monument are great areas! While on the way to Cloudcroft, you'll have a gorgeous drive. It may be too late for the "quaking aspens" though I always thought they made me think of shimmering coins of gold. Stands sell apple and cherry ciders and again, it is said best to visit Sept 7-Oct 21. Ruidoso (they have a live cam as I watched snow coming down, drivers not in the least fazed) is also a great day trip. Also in The Lincoln National Forest is Lincoln where Billy The Kid and Pat Garrett had a "run-in" in the courthouse which is a museum. There are gallows behind one of the museums while a torreon with historic marker and was accessible to visitors to explore, small window like holes into which rifles poked through to aim at unwelcomed visitors. Whether you can still climb to the top (about two stories) it has been much too long since I was last there and hope it has not been defaced. For the life of me I do not understand WHY there are "those kind" who destroy just for the dun of it.
      www.buzzfeed.com/cleverlyengaged/top-26-things-to-do-in-ruidoso-nm-1r0h7?.mlWAj2ldg#.guJxlOEp0
      m.accuweather.com/en/us/ruidoso-nm/88345/november-weather/339603
      It is 50 miles from Alamogordo to Ruidoso while it is 79 miles to Lincoln from Alamogordo.
      I sure hope you are staying long enough to take it all in with your family!
      One last thing, all that I mentioned here can be found on RUclips ie a nine minute FULL TOUR of Lincoln as well as many other's videos of such, Ruidoso, White Sands, Alamogordo, etc. Lake Holloman is a campground area but don't know much.
      I heard the gentleman say something about the Mexican border to get tacos, etc. I HIGHLY ADVISE AGAINST SUCH!!! While it may be just a quaint village, the US GOVERNMENT has issued a warning to travellers to steer clear! New Mexico had THE BEST Mexican food and if you are a meat eater, a green chile cheeseburger will make your tastebuds feel like mariachi are playing on your tongue. Too hot? A spoonful of SUGAR will take the heat away! Las Cruces has muy bueno Mexican food and muy me gusta! I am a vegetarian and my favorite is green chile cheese enchiladas and dang my mouth is watering like crazy!
      I think I have rambled like a tumbleweed all alone in the desert so I shall bid you adios mi amigo!
      Wishing you safe travels!
      travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories/mexico-tr
      Used to be we could walk over the bridge from El Paso into Juarez for shopping, lunch or dinner, even night life and now, NO NO NO NO NO! Murders & kidnappings in broad daylight.
      Blessings to you and your family!

      Are you aware that it is 2 hrs from Holloman? You might check Oliver Lee State Park, about 20 mins from base. Make you reservations, Parks are usually filled by (snow birds) RV guest from back east. We just camped at City of Rocks State Park for 4 nights, a favorite of ours. Spectacular place to view stars! The Gila Cliff dwellings are also nice place to spend the day. Natural hot springs, Jordan Hot springs near dwellings.

There are many beautiful places in Las Cruces as well. If you are looking for more New mexico parks, have i have a place for you! The place is called La Cueva which means "the cave" it is beautiful place and there are trails you can walk up into the miners ghost town still standing from the 1800's i believe. There Just google "Dripping Springs" New Mexico. There are several small springs all through the mountains. They are probably not running right now but it is so amazing up there. Check it out. There is some history attached to this mini area with lots of surprises!

    Welcome to New Mexico! Where pain is a flavor, and the landscape likes to hate you! Just Kidding this is my home! I'm from the local "metropolis" Las Cruces, about 60 miles East. Gotta say for State parks in the area, City of Rocks is the star, worth pushing an extra 30 miles or so to see. Rock Hound might be a little underwhelming for those looking for more than a cheap camping spot, or those with kids (kids LOVE City of Rocks, and they'll sleep at least 10 hours.) And if you've gotten yourself this far south be sure to head to Dona Ana county (Las Cruces/Hatch) for the BEST Mexican food in a state known for Mexican food, and the best green Chile anywhere!

    Great deal on state parks in New Mexico, but some states are not so economical. Like Colorado for example, and I'm talking about fees for out-of-state visitors. I seem to recall that our campsite, with no hookups, was $28. Ouch! And if you plan on going thru Nebraska you better get your state park permit in advance because if you pull in late in the evening, middle of nowhere, and want to stay overnight, rather than charging you more for not being a resident, you can't stay there at all without that permit. Wyoming just charges you more ($17 no hookups), but at least you don't need a special permit. I've started steering clear of state parks in general.

      Hah, try provincial parks in BC, stands for Bring Cash! People literally reserve them online and scalp them like concert tickets!

      I've stayed in Nevada and Utah state parks, they are pretty good, California is hit and miss. Oregon's are nice, especially on the coast. Arizona is a bit pricey, I prefer the BLM land or BLM campgrounds for the most part but New Mexico SP system is excellent IMHO. I'm happy to support their system. They have great volunteers working in them. Extremely friendly.

    Very scenic! I was here back when I was in my mid to late 20's. I don't remember it being so lovely. Was there any cell or wifi service at this park?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  6 лет назад +1

      Good cell connection as is it quite close to the city of Deming, no WiFi that I can remember. Here is a map that is filtered for campgrounds in NM that have internet - www.allstays.com/Campgrounds/New-Mexico-am-wifi.htm

    Pancho villa state park, three miles from the border. Itd be nice if you had done a bit of research to share. . Nice attempt though, sure it was sincere. New mexico pass for residents 100, 225 for out of state. Good for 13 months and all full hookups are 4 dollars, iclufing showers, full use of all state parks. With a pass primitive camping is FREE
    .

    Can you tell us a little about your truck and your recommendations for a tow vehicle? My wife and I are just looking to get started 5th wheeling. Thanks.

      Here is a link to a post and video I did describing our 1994 F350 Ford. - www.loveyourrv.com/big-baby-blue-1994-ford-f350-truck/ I recommend at least a 3/4 ton diesel for folks looking to do extensive travel, especially out west with all the mountains.
      A good site for specs and how much truck you need for the weight of fifth wheel is - fifthwheelst.com/
      Best to have extra capacity in a truck and be comfortable than have barely enough and be white knuckle driving when windy or heading down steep grades. Cheers Ray

    did i hear you right $14 for water and electric and $10 for no hook ups, you chose no hook ups? why wouldn't you pay the $4 for the electric to run a space heater and the tv to watch movies, just curious? loved the bonus footage at the end, great video

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  7 лет назад

      Hookup sites were all taken when we arrived so setup in the dry camping area, little more space between sites too and a nice view so stayed. We have solar for powering TV but we don't watch much.

    Hi, the question i have, is do you pay the $ 200 dollar yearly fee or do you pay as you go. I like your blogs . My wife says i'm ruining the experience for us by watching so many vlogs.

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  7 лет назад

      No, it would have been $225 for out of state residents and we would not be using enough nights to make it worthwhile.
      haha, thanks, Cheers Ray

    Do you come across snakes or scorpions, if so what do you do?

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  5 лет назад

      Not very often as we visit mostly in the cooler time of year so, for the most part, they are hibernating in burrows and underground. If I come across them I leave them alone. We are in our 8th year spending winter in the desert and I have yet to see a rattlesnake and only 2 scorpions, so not a big issue.

      404now, yes, those are the cacti that produce the delicious red fruit called prickly pears, aka tunas in Spanish. The pads are also edible -- nopales or nopalitos in Spanish. But beware! both fruit and pads are covered with thorns! (Prickly pear margaritas are out of this world!)

    You should mention $225 annual pass for non residents lets you camp ALL YEAR

    • @LoveYourRV
      @LoveYourRV  7 лет назад

      Yeah, great deal if you spend enough time in New Mexico. Still, have to pay 4 bucks a night with the pass I believe. So on a few weeks stay it didn't make sense since we also dry camped a lot at 8 bucks a night. Cheers! Ray

      Dry camping is included in the Annual Pass fee. If you want to add electric and water then it's an additional $4.
