My Top 10 Kinks song list: (Honourable Mentions: I’ll Remember, Wonderboy, Johnny Thunder, Monica, Muswell Hillbilly, Destroyer) 1. Animal Farm 2. Village Green 3. Waterloo Sunset 4. Some Mother’s Son 5. Lola 6. Sunny Afternoon 7. Sitting By The Riverside 8. She’s Bought A Hat Like Princess Marina 9. Shangri-La 10. The Last of the Steam Powered Trains Songs I share with Joe (5): Shangri-La, Lola, Animal Farm, Village Green, Waterloo Sunset Songs I share with Kramzer (1): Lola Songs I share with Jason (1): Waterloo Sunset
Great non album songs or singles are "I'm not like everybody' else", "Dead end street", "Days", "Father christmas"...and one song that I love and that I can listen to endlessly, "Berkeley mews". Great mellotron parts.
Came here to mention non album singles/b sides. As much as I love their albums, at least 4 of my top 10 Kinks songs are non album singles: Days, Big Black Smoke, Dead End Street, A Well Respected Man
I have to echo "I'm not like everybody' else" as a stand out non-album track, among the others that people are mentioning. Also, among later album surprises, there's a Dave Davies song on UK Jive called "Perfect Strangers" that is probably the last time that he hit it out of the park... Also surprised that Death of Clown didn't make the cut The beautiful backing vocals and the humorous Dylanesque lyrics get me every time...
Tough list to make. And when an album flows as well as Village Green it's hard to pull individual songs out. So, my list for today. 1. Waterloo Sunset 2. Days 3. I'm Not Like Everybody Else 4. See My Friends 5. This Time Tomorrow 6. A Long Way From Home. Those two songs, from Lola, are so well sequenced that I can't think of one wothout the other. 7. Well Respected Man 8. Death Of A Clown 9.Animal Farm 10. Victoria 11. Set Me Free 12. Village Green 13. Dead End Street 14. Fancy 15. Tired Of Waiting 16. This Strange Effect 17. Strangers 18. Get Back In Line 19. David Watts 20. Wicked Annabella And everyone should check out Dave Davies-Hidden Treasures. It's an attempt to piece together what Dave Davies first solo album may have sounded like. Some of these songs also appeared as extra tracks on Kinks reissues. For a hodgepodge of disparate elements it holds together as a stand alone album.
1. Waterloo Sunset 2. Autumn Almanac 3. Shangri-La 4. Days 5. Tired of Waiting for You 6. Sunny Afternoon 7. Village Green Preservation Society 8. Misty Water 9. Lola 10. Dead End Street HMs: A Well-Respected Man, Where Have All The Good Times Gone, Victoria, David Watts, I Go To Sleep,
There are so many good songs - thank you for helping me discover the Kinks - i never really paid that much attention to their discography, but they are so good. Much appreciated.!!
10. Apeman 9. Picture Book 8. Around the Dial 7. All Day and All of the Night 6. Destroyer 5. Come Dancing 4. Father Christmas 3. Long Distance 2. You Really Got Me 1. The Village Green Preservation Society
10 All Day and All of The Night - Joe 10 9 Tired of Waiting For You - Jason 4 8 Apeman 7 Lola - Joe 5 Kramzer 2 6 Dedicated Follower of Fashion 5 You Really Got Me 4 Days 3 Waterloo Sunset - Joe 1 Jason 5 2 Sunny Afternoon ONE: AUTUMN ALMANAC
1. Shangri-la 2. Waterloo Sunset 3. Celluloid Heroes 4. Picture Book 5. Get Back in Line 6. Til the End of the Day 7. Days 8. Dead End Street 9. Some Mother's Son 10. Polly That's just ten that came to mind. So many great songs it's hard to narrow it down. Honorable mentions: Big Sky, Village Green, Victoria, All Day and All of the Night, Lola, Come Dancing, Australia, Young and Innocent Days, Sunny Afternoon, Fancy, Do You Remember Walter?, Have You Seen His Name?, Love Me til the Sun Shines, God's Children, Apeman, Power man, Strangers, Father Christmas, Living on a thin line, Better Days, and so many more. The Kinks didn't sing as well or make records that sounded as good as The Beatles, but during their classic period I think their songs were just as good and sometimes even better.
I'm too lazy to create a list (or maybe its just too damn difficult), but if I did it would be somewhat close to yours which suggests to me that you are also a long-time Kinks fan . I like "Polly" but I'd probably drop that one in favor of many others including some on your honorable mentions list. Another one not on your list that I would consider is "20th Century Man". Such a classic song that has aged very well. I probably like it even more today than I did in 1971.
My Top 10 Kinks Songs # 10 Tired Of Waiting For You # 9 David Watts # 8 Dedicated Follower Of Fashion # 7 Till The End Of The Day # 6 Victoria # 5 Sunny 🌞 Afternoon # 4 Hardway # 3 All Day & All Of The Night # 2 Lola & .. # 1 Celluloid Heroes. Awesome Band ! 🇬🇧
like the Who, the Kinks had such a wealth of great songs in the late 60s, that many great Kinks songs aren't on any studio albums, such as "Berkeley Mews," "Autumn Almanac," "Wonder Boy," "King Kong," "Mr.Pleasant," "Big Black Smoke," "Susannah's Still Alive," "Mindless Child of Motherhood." 2 studio tracks that I didn't see on anyone's list that are big favs of mine are "David Watts," and "Mr. Churchill Says."
10) Days 9) 20th Century Man 8) Strangers 7) Waterloo Sunset 6) Better Things 5) Dont forget to dance 4) Muswell Hillbillies 3) Misfits 2) Rock and Roll Fantasy 1) Celluloid Heroes Honorable mentions: Living on a thin line, Sunny afternoon, Alcohol, Superman, Village green preservation society, picture book, schooldays, Nothing in this world stop me worrying bout that girl.
Fine lists. Not surprising there are differences considering Davies wrote 3,000,000 songs, and a large percentage are good. Mine would probably be 10: Nothin' in the World Can Stop Me Worryin' 'Bout That Girl 9: Come Dancing 8: Days 7: I Go To Sleep 6: Victoria 5: Sunny Afternoon 4: This Time Tomorrow 3: Lola 2:Living on a Thin Line 1: Waterloo Sunset
10) Tired of Waiting 09) Animal Farm 08) Picture Book 07) You Really Got Me 06) Lola 05) All Of My Friends Were There 04) Do You Remember Walter 03) People Take Pictures of Each Other 02) Strangers 01) This Is Where I Belong Honorable Mention (11-26 in no particular order): All Day And All of the Night, I'll Remember, Days, Mr. Songbird, Sitting By The Riverside, Come Dancing, Get Back In Line, The World Keeps Going Round, See My Friends, Where Have All The Good Times Gone, Susannah's Still Alive, Waterloo Sunset, I Need You, Celluloid Heroes, Victoria, Big Sky
It's really hard to choose only ten songs, The Kinks have at least 50 great songs. My list: 10- Autumn Almanac 9- Mr Pleasant 8- You really got me 7- Do you remember Walter 6- Sunny Afternoon 5- Around the Dial 4- Picture Book 3- Lola 2- Waterloo Sunset 1- Celluloid Heroes
Sunny Afternoon, Do You Remember Walter, Where Have All The Good Times gone, David Watts, Autumn Almanac, Dedicated Follower Of Fashion, Death Of A Clown, Big Black Smoke, I'm Not Like Everybody Else, and the list goes on and on...
Great lists guys. My choices would be: 1. The Way Love Used To Be 2.Waterloo Sunset 3. Strangers 4.Better Things 5.I'm Not Like Everybody Else 6,Tired Of Waiting For You 7. Young And Innocent Days 8. All Day And All Of The Night 9.Yo-Yo 10.Till The End of The Day
Ray is one of the GOATs of songwriting, he probably has 50 top 10 worthy songs. However my top 3 would be: 1. Waterloo Sunset 2. Days 3. Autumn Almanac (that's a song with an all time great bridge)
I really enjoyed this. The Kinks and The Zombies are my two all-time favorite groups. Two songs I love, both of which are very deep cuts, are Good Day from Word of Mouth and Art Lover from Give the People What They Want. I would love for the three of you to do The Zombies. I think you’ll be surprised by how amazing their catalog of work was.
Making a top 10 is just impossible. No one Kinks songs is better than the rest with such an amazing catalog, but here are some of my absolute favorites in no particular order- When A Solution Comes Lazy Old Sun Rosemary Rose This I Know Berkley Mews I Am Free 20th Century Man Daylight Two Sisters Days House In The Country Rainy Day In June Rats Creeping Jean Do You Remember Walter? Shangri-la
Oh boy... Not an easy task! 😵💫 10. Ducks on the Wall 09. A Rock n Roll Fantasy 08. Sitting in my Hotel 07. Two Sisters 06. Brother 05. Waterloo Sunset 04. I'm in Disgrace 03. Victoria 02. Life Goes On 01. Get Back in Line
1.Waterloo Sunset - 2.Lola 3.Big Sky 4.Twentieth Century Man 5.You Really Got Me 6.Where Have All The Good Times Gone 7.Shangri-La 8.See My Friends 9.Sweet Lady Genevieve 10.Village Green
I don't know if you guys got the chance to listen to their live album 'One For the Road,' but there are two live versions that to me just kill the studio versions and are two favorites. The live version of "Lola" is one. But probably my single favorite Kinks song: the live version of "Celluloid Heroes." Listen to Dave Davies guitar solos on that. Brilliant. That live version starts off with about two minutes of Dave just ripping it up before the vocals even come in.
The Kinks are so full of great tunes that it is almost impossible to narrow it down to 10. I didn't stray far from the well-known tracks. Most of these I first heard from famous cover versions. The Village Green Preservation Society Dedicated Follower Of Fashion Plastic Man Victoria Lola David Watts I'm Not Like Everybody Else Stop Your Sobbing Last Of The Steam Powered Trains And #1 a song on a par with God Only Knows and other all-time great songs - Waterloo Sunset
So many great Kinks covers. Check out Kinked! Kinks Songs & Sessions 1964-1971. It's a comp of Kinks covers, some of which have The Kinks backing the singer.
This is my current list, always changing, and even the ones I missed I love dearly (tried to limit per album): 1. Waterloo Sunset 2. Strangers 3. Shangri La 4. Village Green 5. This Time Tomorrow 6. Autumn Almanac 7. Some Mother's Son 8. Days 9. Sunny Afternoon 10. Animal Farm 11. Victoria 12. Alcohol 13. Two Sisters 14. The Village Green Preservation Society 15. Death of a Clown 16. Dedicated Follower of Fasion 17. Rosy Won't You Please Come Home 18. Big Sky 19. Till The End of the Day 20. Celluloid Heroes 21. A Well Respected Man 22. David Watts 23. There's no point ranking Kinks songs cause they all pretty equally good and I could just keep listing songs.
My top ten Kinks songs. 10. Father Christmas 9. Victoria 8.Tired of Waiting 7.Autumb Almanac 6. Waterloo Sunset 5. Sunny Afternoon 4. This Time Tomorrow 3. Deadend Street 2. I'm Not Like Everybody Else 1. Till the End of the Day
Not an easy task, I'll try 1) celluloid heroes 2) victoria 3) sunny afternoon 4) Shangri-la 5) this time tomorrow 6) Strangers 7) David Watts 8) Starstruck 9) Oklahoma USA 10) Waterloo sunset
Since it seems no one seems to want to read my TLDR top 50, here's my top 10: #10 - Berkeley Mews - So underrated among their tracks, which isn’t surprising given its obscurity (though not in the States, where it of course appeared on The Kink Kronikles). Love the vaudevillian basis, the way they rock it up, and great use of mellotron strings. And of course, great lyrics, although that becomes redundant when you’re talking about this band from ’66-’68. #9 - Johnny Thunder - So majestic. The horns with that scat vocal line take it over the top. #8 - Animal Farm - The gloriously catchy centerpiece of Village Green for me. #7 - Days - To be honest, a bit overrated in the band’s legacy, but still phenomenal, with a host of keyboard textures framing Ray’s valedictory masterpiece. Should have been the last (or at least penultimate) track on Village Green. #6 - Lazy Old Sun - They only did psychedelic once, and it was as great as nearly absolutely anything in the genre. Rasa’s soaring vocals (like a far more awesome prediction of Star Trek’s closing music) make this track, but the woozy horns and whooshing low guitars and the haunting organ also rule. And great lyrics and melody, of course. #5 - Session Man - Yes! This is so vastly underrated even among the tracks on Face to Face. Wish it was recorded better, but it’s absolutely the catchy upbeat jam of that album. One of my five favorite tracks of all-time for guitar tone - like a rocked-up, gnarly version of the guitar on The Beatles’ “Every Little Thing.” Love the crazy harpsichord part, the ascending, charging guitar chords, Rasa’s backing vocals, and of course how Ray trolls the living crap out of Nicky Hopkins by ruthlessly deriding his profession even as he goes nuts on the harpsichord. #4 - Till the End of the Day - Not only did Big Star cover it, it’s the sonic blueprint for their upbeat material. Doesn’t sound like any other Kinks song, but it’s a rocking party from beginning to end. #3 - You Really Got Me - Kramzer covered it well yesterday. The blueprint for everything, and Ray’s meal ticket to actually make a living out of his future artistry. #2 - Waterloo Sunset - While I have to work not think of “Laughter in the Rain” whenever that guitar riff comes in, this is simply Ray’s undeniable masterpiece. #1 - All Day and All of the Night - Why do both this and You Really Got Me make the top three? Because they’re that phenomenal. And because this one is so much better at what it does. That concrete-ripping distortion in the opening months of ’65 - my goodness. So much mayhem. Have to bang my head throughout.
1. You Really Got Me 2. Lola 3. Do It Again 4. Victoria 5. Days 6. Better Things 7. Living On A Thin Line 8. Celluloid Heroes(live) 9. See My Friends 10. Heart Of Gold 11. A Rock n Roll Fantasy
1. Sunny Afternoon 2. Shangri-La 3. Waterloo Sunset 4. Lola 5. All Day And All Of A Night 6. Picture Book 7. Till The End Of A Day 8. You Really Got Me 9. 20th Century Man 10. Better Things
Kinks best in descending order: 24 Just can't go to Sleep. Like the Lennonesque refrain of "no no no no no no no just can't go to sleep"; for Lennon, it was no no no no not a Second Time. Also on the screen list of Jason's, it's not Sometime tomorrow but This time Tomorrow. 23 Village Green 22 Strangers 21 Tin Soldier Man. Musically has a Dylan and Hendrix stamp. They may have borrowed from Dylan, but Hendrix might have borrowed from them. 20 Johnny Thunder. An OK song. A much better song about Johnny is "Johnny's Gonna Die" live at the 7th Street Entry by the Replacements. 19 Days 18 Living on a Thin Line 17 I'm Not Like Everybody Else 16 Picture Book 15 This Time Tomorrow. Nice song but nothing compared to The Move's "This Time Tomorrow" which is a top 100 song for me. 14 Big Sky. Good song that captures the essence of the Jimi Hendrix Experience. 13 Come Dancing The song was inspired by Ray's memories of his older sister who died of a heart attack while dancing at a dance hall. 7.8 12 Victoria 8 11 Celluloid Heroes 9 10 Set Me Free 9 9 Till the end of the day 9 8 Stop your Sobbing - The Pretenders version is more jaw-dropping. 9 7 Sunny Afternoon Another song with a great descending bassline. 9.5 6 Lola 9.5 5 A Well-respected man 9.5 3 Tired of waiting for you 9.5 4 All Day and All of the Night 9.5 2 You Really got me 9.5 1 Waterloo Sunset. A beautiful song because of Ray's singing and storytelling; the song's descending bass line; Dave's magic; vocal harmonies and great production values. Rolling Stone Mag. will rank it very high until the day they don't. 10
No complaints ... eclectic lists for an eclectic band. I'm pretty much set in stone with this band ... at least with my Top 10, which has been, though fluid in its hierarchy, populated by the same ten songs for the past four decades. I share one track with Joe and one with Jason ... None with Kramzer, tho The Contenders has always floated around between 11 and 15 for me. 10) You Really Got Me 09) All Day and All of the Night 08) (Wish I Could Fly like) Superman 07) Where Have All the Good Times Gone 06) Till the End of the Day 05) Set Me Free 04) Tired of Waiting 03) Sunny Afternoon 02) Rats 01) King Kong When push comes to shove I always fall back on a Power Pop aesthetic. Catch you guys on the flip side! Cheers!
25. Apeman 24. Tired of Waiting for You 23. Destroyer 22. Nothing to Say 21. Art Lover 20. Come On Now 19. Village Green 18. Sleepwalker 17. End of the Season 16. Low Budget 15. Lola 14. Come Dancing 13. Top of the Pops 12. Young Conservatives 11. Tin Soldier Man 10. Father Christmas 9. Rainy Day In June 8. Victoria 7. Harry Rag 6. Animal Farm 5. Waterloo Sunset 4. Til the End of the Day 3. Yes Sir No Sir 2. All Day and All of the Night 1. You Really Got Me The Kinks have a bunch of great awesome, but they also a ton of fantastic songs it was extremely hard to choose. I'm actually glad that your lists are so different from each other's. Some many great songs they have. Ray Davies is a songwriting genius.
10- tired of waiting 9- i'm not like everybody else 8- acute schizophrenia blues 7- get back in line 6- headmaster 5- 20th century man 4- no more looking back 3- can't stop the music 2- education 1- rush hour blues
Coming up with a top ten Kinks songs was even tougher than ranking the albums, as there are just so many great songs. I have a list of over 100 Kinks songs that are all great. And as much as I love the 'classic' tracks and singles, overall, I tend to like the underrated gems throughout their catalog even more. Thus my list will probably be different from most others, as most of the usual tracks are not included (they would fall somewhere outside the top ten). So, this list consists mainly of my favorite song from each of some of their best albums. 10(tie). Celluloid Heroes (from Everybody's in Showbiz) 10(tie). You Can't Stop the Music (from A Soap Opera) 9. Victoria (from Arthur) 8. This Time Tomorrow (from Lola) 7. Living on a Thin Line (from Word of Mouth) 6. Catch Me Now I'm Falling (from Low Budget) 5. Better Things (from Give the People) 4. Juke Box Music (from Sleepwalker) 3. Starstruck (from Village Green) 2. No More Looking Back (from Schoolboys in Disgrace) 1. Misfits (from Misfits)
I found this impossible to narrow down but here's my attempt. My list : 10. I Need You 9. I'm Not Like Everybody Else 8. You Really Got Me 7. Where Have All the Good Times Gone 6. Till the End of the Day 5. Dedicated Follower of Fashion 4. Picture Book 3. Victoria 2. Lola 1. Waterloo Sunset
One of the great music stories was that BBC Radio told the Kinks' management that they couldn't play 'Lola' because the lyric referring to "Coca-Cola" broke their ruled against advertising. The Kinks were in the US at the time, so Ray Davies had to fly from London to New York and back to re-record the line as "Cherry Cola". These rules probably prevented Dr Hook's 'Cover of the Rolling Stone' becoming a hit over here. Of course, The Doors "Hello I Love You" was a pretty blatant rip-off of 'All Day and All of the Night."
10. Autumn Almanac 9. Nothing To Say 8. Picture Book 7. Sunny Afternoon 6. Waterloo Sunset 5. Get Back In Line 4. Strangers 3. Rats 2. You Really Got Me 1. Shangri-la
10. Victoria 9. Waterloo Sunset 8. I'm Not Like Everybody Else 7. Stop Your Sobbing 6. Where Have All The Good Times Done 5. Love Me Till The Sun Shines 4. All Day And All Of The Night 3. Who'll Be The Next In Line 2. She's Got Everything 1, (duh) You Really Got Me
1) Lola 2) Shangri-La 3) David Watts 4) Death of a Clown 5) Victoria 6) Village Green Preservation Society 7) Full Moon 8) Strangers 9) Muswell Hillbillies 10) Education
There are three non-album tracks that I would give very serious consideration for my personal top ten list: • Dedicated Follower of Fashion • A Well Respected Man • Autumn Almanac
Top 10 - tough choices - here goes: 1. Sweet Lady Genevieve 2. The Village Green Preservation Society 3. Days 4. Animal Farm 5. Celluloid Heroes 6. Waterloo Sunset 7. I'm Not Like Everybody Else 8. Shangri-La 9. 20th Century Man 10. A Rock 'N' Roll fantasy .
To be honest there is not a lot between my top 50 but I do have a preference for the 65 -72 period but gems can be found on nearly all the albums... 01… Waterloo Sunset 02… Victoria 03… Sunny Afternoon 04… Apeman 05… Picture Book 06… The Village Green Preservation Society 07… Big Sky 08… Till Death Do Us Part (The Great Lost Kinks Album) 1973 09… Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues 10… See My Friend
Kudos to you guys for even trying. The Kinks are my second favorite band in the world and picking their top ten songs would change daily. But speaking of non album tracks, I'm Not Like Everybody Else would definitely be on my list. I also love Deadend Street, Mr. Pleasant and Berkeley Mews.
10. Johnny Thunder (The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society) 9. Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues (Muswell Hillbillies) 8. Arthur (Arthur (Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire)) 7. Little Miss Queen Of Darkness (Face To Face) 6. Sunny Afternoon (Face To Face) 5. Statstruck (The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society) 4. Animal Farm (The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society) 3. Sitting By The Riverside (The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society) 2. Waterloo Sunset (Something Else By The Kinks) 1. Rosy Won't You Please Come Home (Face To Face)
#1- "Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues", #2- "Shangri-la", #3- "Moving Picture", #4- "Autumn Almanac", #5- "Waterloo Sunset", #6- "The Village Green Preservation Society", #7- "Apeman", #8- "A Well Respected Man", #9- "Sunny Afternoon", #10- "Picture Book". It is very hard (for me) to limit The Kinks to TEN FAVORITE SONGS! I would have a difficult time listing 'just' 100 favorite Kinks songs! I'm 74, and I still listen to them regularly. But, I have to say that there are more than a handful that I can do without!
One of the hardest lists I've had to make, seriously. Even a top 20 seems like it falls short but I love all of these (and so many of their other songs too - just because it's not here doesn't mean I don't love it🙂). 20. The Village Green Preservation Society 19. Powerman 18. Mr. Big Man 17. A Well Respected Man 16. Stormy Sky 15. Sitting in the Midday Sun 14. Lazy Old Sun 13. Ring the Bells 12. Alcohol 11. Strangers 10. Shangri-La 9. Some Mother's Son 8. All Day and All of the Night 7. Celluloid Heroes 6. Muswell Hillbilly 5. Wicked Annabella 4. Waterloo Sunset 3. 20th Century Man 2. Victoria 1. Days
That's some serious Kinks love V! I feel the same, too many 5-star songs to fit into a top 20. Love that you chose "All Day and All of the Night." I love that fast little "chugga chugga" on guitar at the end of some of the verses.
01 Waterloo Sunset 02 Mr. Songbird 03 Sitting In The Midday Sun 04 Get Back In The Line 05 Sleepwalker 06 Too Much On My Mind 07 (A) Face In The Crowd 08 Village Green 09 Shangri-La 10 Victoria
Joe's top 10 is bizarrely close to mine, and most of the songs on his that didn't make mine would be in my top 20. 1. Oklahoma, USA 2. Strangers 3. Days 4. Waterloo Sunset 5. Shangri-La 6. This Time Tomorrow 7. Village Green 8. Animal Farm 9. Victoria 10. Muswell Hillbilly I think?? Today at least.
#1 Strangers (cheers to Jason!) #2 Sunny Afternoon #3 Celluloid Heroes #4 Waterloo Sunset #5 Picture Book #6 Big Sky #7 You Really Got Me #8 Autumn Almanac #9 Lola #10 This Time Tomorrow Art Lover is not one of my top favourite Kinks' songs, but I really like it. Ray Davies has said that it's about a divorced father who misses his children, but I don't buy that for a second. Of course it has paedophilia all over it, which makes it cringey as hell, but it's a really interesting portrait. Like Joe said, it's not like he is advocating it.
Enjoyed your lists both albums and singles but I would have to have found room for Dead End Street and She's Got Everything and although Waterloo Sunset is a beautiful song for me it's eclipsed by the follow up Autumn Almanac which is my #1. Oh & the outtakes Time Song and Nobody's Fool are fantastic. I could go on forever.
10. Supersonic rocketship 9. Nothing in this world stop me worrying about that girl 8. Better days 7. 20th century man 6. Victoria 5. Here comes yet another day 4. Death of a clown 3. Dead end street 2. big black smoke 1. Fancy
@David Ellis yep. Unfortunately, I'm old enough to remember when they won the Cup in 1975. I was 5 at the time, but I remember. Many guys 'streaking' in Philly that night with nothing on but just high-top Chuck Taylor's lol. Crazy times then & now when it comes to Philly & sports🙂
TOP TEN In alphabetical order: Animal Farm Better Things Celluloid Heroes Mindless Child of Motherhood Misfits Polly Phenomenal Cat Starstruck Strangers Sweet Lady Genevieve Surprised none of the guys had Misfits in their Top Ten, probably my favorite song by them, Sweet Lady Genevieve a close second.
My number one will always be my fave Kinks song, the other 9 are interchangable depending on what mood I'm in 😉 1) Waterloo Sunset 2) Lola 3) Days 4)Till the End of the Day 5) Stop Your Sobbing 6) You Really Got Me 7) Sunny Afternoon 8) Strangers 9) Victoria 10) Celluloid Heroes Cheers!
I agree 100 percent with each list. I also like each list has a mostly different mix of songs. I couldn't even narrow it down to 10 songs, but I am going to give their albums another listen due to these past couple of videos.
I wish I gave more of a listen to the Kinks, I love Village Green, but none of the other albums have really grabbed me as much. The Kinks are bit weird in the sense that have a lot of good songs, but few I would call great. 10 Father Christmas - I think Ray writes humorous songs as well as anybody. 9.8. You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night -So similar it's impossible to separate, I like the riff more in "You Really" but the solo in All Day is amazing. 7. Love me till the Sun Shines - My favorite Dave tune, though I had not heard Strangers till yesterday. Good energy. 6. Sunny Afternoon 5. Dedicated Follower of Fashion - As a fashion hater, the song amuses me. 4. Do you remember Walter? - For me easily the stand out track from Village Green. Lovingly nostalgic reminds me a lot of "In my Life" 3. Waterloo Sunset - Just gorgeous. 2. A Well Respected Man - I think the first song they Kinks took in a new direction. I like to think of this as theme song for Vernon Dursley. 1. Days - I actually think this is prettier than Waterloo Sunset.
I Go to Sleep, See My Friends, Where Have All the Good Times Gone, Days, Sunny Afternoon, Better Things, Death of a Clown, Party Line, I Am Free, Who’ll Be the Next in Line, Set Me Free!
I really loved The Kinks. I think their 60s sound was my favorite of the Brit Invasion bands. Ultimately, I am a Stones fan, but The Kinks run a close second. I feel like my list is a bit 60s oriented and maybe too many singles, but these are my favorite tracks (10 to 1): Dedicated Follower Of Fashion Sunny Afternoon Celluloid Heroes Lola You Really Got Me Well Respected Man All Day And All Of The Night I'm Not Like Everybody Else Victoria Till The End of the Day

@@179rich He was just saying that to justify his stupid music listening habits not counting singles which is especially stupid with The Kinks and most 60s artists who were more prolific with singles. Missing Days and Autumn Almanac is not really understandable to me
My selection is as follows......Waterloo Sunset, I Go To Sleep, This Strange Effect, Shangri La, Two Sisters, Autumn Almanac, This Time Tomorrow, Days, Big Sky, Scattered, Wonderboy, This is Where I Belong ,Pictures In The Sand, Walter, Hatred, Better Things...............
There's this really good and underrated movie called Juliet, Naked from a few years back. It stars Ethan Hawke and he does a great cover of "Waterloo Sunset" in it.
only schindler does more meaningful lists, guys. love the obscurity of some of your selections, you really immersed yourselves in this unrivaled cannon of ray davies'.
Here is my selection . But it's too hard...this band and its leader were so prolific. It's loaded with true gems. Graceful Kinks. You can only listen to non album singles to realise how good they were....a difficult choice. But here it is, today for 25 top songs : 1. Some mother's son 2. Death of a clown 3. Shangri la 4. Do you remember walter ? 5. 20th century man 6. Waterloo sunset 7. Sitting in my hotel 8. Lola 9. Rosie won't you please come home ? 10. Days 11. Dead end street 12. Animal farm 13. Get back in line 14. Daylight 15. Tin soldier man 16. Tired of waiting for you 17. Berkeley mews 18. Money & corruption / I'm your man 19. Rock and roll fantasy 20. Stormy sky 21. This strange effect 22. Drivin' 23. Party line 24. Till the end of the day 25. I'm not like everybody's else
Jason wins this for me. But I wonder how Dead End Street didn't make any of your lists. There's another song that I miss, but I'm not like everybody else. 🤗 And I really support your venture!
One other thing. I'm just gonna leave this suggestion for you on your upcoming Grateful Dead ranking. The Dead are fairly unique in that they sometimes used live albums like most bands use studio albums. To introduce new songs and material. The only difference was the setting, but the purpose was the same. Any Dead fan will tell you, it is pointless to rank Dead albums without at least 'Grateful Dead' (aka Skull and Roses) and 'Europe '72'. Those are full of new songs. Also, Bob Weir's 'Ace' (which is Weir backed by the Dead), where every song became standards in Dead sets. And Jerry Garcia's 'Garcia.' Same deal. You include those four with the standard studio discography, much more accurate. Love your channel. Just a suggestion from someone who knows The Dead and their somewhat unique circumstances.
@@179rich The Grateful Dead are such a special case that I'm going to make 3 different ranking lists- one for studio albums, one for live albums, and one for the whole "Dead family," which includes the solo albums.
@@179rich I didn't listen to the Dead at all when I was a teenager, but ever since college they've been growing on me... and to this day they've never stopped growing on me. I'm convinced Jerry Garcia is one of the most talented musicians that ever walked the Earth. How many musicians can claim to be one of the greatest guitar players as well as of the greatest songwriters? That's a really short list of people.

If you guys are into Dave Davies, he was going to put out a solo album at the end of the 60s that was shelved. It has been heavily bootlegged. I have a vinyl bootleg of it. It is killer.

Songs I share with Jason (1): Waterloo Sunset
Great non album songs or singles are "I'm not like everybody' else", "Dead end street", "Days", "Father christmas"...and one song that I love and that I can listen to endlessly, "Berkeley mews". Great mellotron parts.
I think I probably underrated "Berkeley Mews" a little bit on my list. It's tough, though... they have sooo many great songs.
Lavender Hill, Big Black Smoke, Autumn Almanac, Wonder Boy, She’s Got Everything, Misty Water……..
Came here to mention non album singles/b sides. As much as I love their albums, at least 4 of my top 10 Kinks songs are non album singles: Days, Big Black Smoke, Dead End Street, A Well Respected Man
Mr. Thomas Winkelmuller ~ l had two of your five non-LP songs listed on my top ten tunes list.
1. Waterloo Sunset
2. Days
3. I'm Not Like Everybody Else
4. See My Friends
5. This Time Tomorrow
6. A Long Way From Home. Those two songs, from Lola, are so well sequenced that I can't think of one wothout the other.
7. Well Respected Man
8. Death Of A Clown
9.Animal Farm
10. Victoria
11. Set Me Free
12. Village Green
13. Dead End Street
14. Fancy
15. Tired Of Waiting
16. This Strange Effect
17. Strangers
18. Get Back In Line
19. David Watts
20. Wicked Annabella
And everyone should check out Dave Davies-Hidden Treasures. It's an attempt to piece together what Dave Davies first solo album may have sounded like. Some of these songs also appeared as extra tracks on Kinks reissues. For a hodgepodge of disparate elements it holds together as a stand alone album.
Outstanding list. I forgot "see my friends" and "dead end street" But there are so many..
@@painless465 Thanks. Looking at other lists I kept thinking "Damn, I should have picked that one!"
Great list!
Treasures was REMASTERED!
Great list. I might put I'm Not Like Everybody Else at #2 behind Waterloo Sunset, and Destroyer has to go somewhere too IMHO.

I appreciate the way you added the TLM boys. Next time, I'm going to copy you if I can remember to do it.
@@179rich It's a good way of demonstrating our common taste and also, what they have missed out on
One's Kinks top ten list cannot really be deemed complete unless it contains "Apeman".

2. Waterloo Sunset
3. Celluloid Heroes
4. Picture Book
5. Get Back in Line
6. Til the End of the Day
7. Days
8. Dead End Street

That's just ten that came to mind.
Great comment- and I’d add that I think the mix of ray and Dave on vocals was as pleasing to my ears as Beatles.

Fine lists. Not surprising there are differences considering Davies wrote 3,000,000 songs, and a large percentage are good. Mine would probably be

Ray is one of the GOATs of songwriting, he probably has 50 top 10 worthy songs. However my top 3 would be:
1. Waterloo Sunset
2. Days
3. Autumn Almanac (that's a song with an all time great bridge)
Glad to see Oklahoma USA get some love. Disappointed Do You Remember Walter? didn't make anyone's cuts.
Joe's list rocks.

Thanks for making playlists for these. You make hearing new music easy and abundant.
Since it seems no one seems to want to read my TLDR top 50, here's my top 10:
#10 - Berkeley Mews - So underrated among their tracks, which isn’t surprising given its obscurity (though not in the States, where it of course appeared on The Kink Kronikles).
LOVE the inclusion of "Berkeley Mews"!

Days is a wonderful song.
Kinks best in descending order:
24 Just can't go to Sleep. Like the Lennonesque refrain of "no no no no no no no just can't go to sleep"; for Lennon, it was no no no no not a Second Time. Also on the screen list of Jason's, it's not Sometime tomorrow but This time Tomorrow.
23 Village Green
22 Strangers
21 Tin Soldier Man.

15 This Time Tomorrow.

11 Celluloid Heroes 9
10 Set Me Free 9

5 A Well-respected man 9.5
3 Tired of waiting for you 9.5
4 All Day and All of the Night 9.5
2 You Really got me 9.5
1 Waterloo Sunset.

10(tie). Celluloid Heroes (from Everybody's in Showbiz)
10(tie). You Can't Stop the Music (from A Soap Opera)
9. Victoria (from Arthur)
8. This Time Tomorrow (from Lola)
7. Living on a Thin Line (from Word of Mouth)
6. Catch Me Now I'm Falling (from Low Budget)
5. Better Things (from Give the People)
4. Juke Box Music (from Sleepwalker)
3. Starstruck (from Village Green)
2. No More Looking Back (from Schoolboys in Disgrace)
1. Misfits (from Misfits)
"No More Looking Back" is a great song.
Jason’s cat had no problem narrowing down their list. Phenomenal Cat was a clear winner for the top spot.
Phenomenal Cat might the biggest grower on that record. Didn't care for it originally, but it went down nicely for this Kinks week.
Haha. So what about Rats ;)
Always loved phenomenal cat! Good call!
Rats is a great ballsy rocker!
Nice job guys, you know the catalog better than I do for sure.
I found this impossible to narrow down but here's my attempt.
My list :
10. I Need You
9. I'm Not Like Everybody Else
8. You Really Got Me
7. Where Have All the Good Times Gone
6. Till the End of the Day
5. Dedicated Follower of Fashion
4. Picture Book
3. Victoria
2. Lola
10. Autumn Almanac
9. Nothing To Say
8. Picture Book
7. Sunny Afternoon
6. Waterloo Sunset
5. Get Back In Line
4. Strangers
3. Rats
2. You Really Got Me
1. Shangri-la
10. Victoria
9. Waterloo Sunset
8. I'm Not Like Everybody Else
7. Stop Your Sobbing
6. Where Have All The Good Times Done
5. Love Me Till The Sun Shines
4. All Day And All Of The Night
3. Who'll Be The Next In Line
2. She's Got Everything
1, (duh) You Really Got Me
1) Lola
2) Shangri-La
3) David Watts
4) Death of a Clown
5) Victoria
6) Village Green Preservation Society
7) Full Moon
8) Strangers
9) Muswell Hillbillies
10) Education
There are three non-album tracks that I would give very serious consideration for my personal top ten list:
• Dedicated Follower of Fashion
• A Well Respected Man
• Autumn Almanac
I figured "Well Respected Man" would make one of the lists. But the Kinks have so many great songs it's not all that surprising.
Love your choices!
Top 10 - tough choices - here goes:
1. Sweet Lady Genevieve
2. The Village Green Preservation Society
3. Days
4. Animal Farm
5. Celluloid Heroes
6. Waterloo Sunset
7. I'm Not Like Everybody Else
8. Shangri-La
9. 20th Century Man
10. A Rock 'N' Roll fantasy
.
To be honest there is not a lot between my top 50 but I do have a preference for the 65 -72 period but gems can be found on nearly all the albums...
01… Waterloo Sunset
02… Victoria
03… Sunny Afternoon
04… Apeman
05… Picture Book
06… The Village Green Preservation Society
07… Big Sky
08… Till Death Do Us Part (The Great Lost Kinks Album) 1973
09… Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues
10… See My Friend
Kudos to you guys for even trying. The Kinks are my second favorite band in the world and picking their top ten songs would change daily. But speaking of non album tracks, I'm Not Like Everybody Else would definitely be on my list. I also love Deadend Street, Mr. Pleasant and Berkeley Mews.
Solid list. Nobody went off the rails this time.
10. Johnny Thunder (The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society)
9. Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues (Muswell Hillbillies)
8. Arthur (Arthur (Or The Decline And Fall Of The British Empire))
7. Little Miss Queen Of Darkness (Face To Face)
6. Sunny Afternoon (Face To Face)
5. Statstruck (The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society)
4. Animal Farm (The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society)
3. Sitting By The Riverside (The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society)
2. Waterloo Sunset (Something Else By The Kinks)
REALLY love Van Halen's versions of "You Really Got Me" and "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?"
i thought i was the only person who loved where have all the good times gone!!🐯🐯
You're No Good was a good cover on # 2
@@davidellis5141 love this one as well 🐯🐯
One of the hardest lists I've had to make, seriously. Even a top 20 seems like it falls short but I love all of these (and so many of their other songs too - just because it's not here doesn't mean I don't love it🙂).
20. The Village Green Preservation Society
19. Powerman
18. Mr. Big Man
17. A Well Respected Man
16. Stormy Sky
15. Sitting in the Midday Sun
14. Lazy Old Sun
13. Ring the Bells
12. Alcohol
11. Strangers
10. Shangri-La
9. Some Mother's Son
8. All Day and All of the Night
7. Celluloid Heroes
6. Muswell Hillbilly
5. Wicked Annabella
4. Waterloo Sunset
3. 20th Century Man
2. Victoria
1. Days
just great my friend!!!💜🐯🐯 There were so many to choose from!!!!
same #1 - never a doubt on this one
That's some serious Kinks love V! I feel the same, too many 5-star songs to fit into a top 20. Love that you chose "All Day and All of the Night." I love that fast little "chugga chugga" on guitar at the end of some of the verses.
@@NaughtyVampireGod I really fell in love with that song this week!
@@179rich Before this week I probably would have considered it my favourite Kinks song, just such a great song!
01 Waterloo Sunset
02 Mr. Songbird
03 Sitting In The Midday Sun
04 Get Back In The Line
05 Sleepwalker
06 Too Much On My Mind
07 (A) Face In The Crowd

Joe's top 10 is bizarrely close to mine, and most of the songs on his that didn't make mine would be in my top 20.
1. Oklahoma, USA
2. Strangers
3. Days
4. Waterloo Sunset
5. Shangri-La
6. This Time Tomorrow
7. Village Green
8. Animal Farm
9. Victoria
10. Muswell Hillbilly

#1 Strangers (cheers to Jason!)
#2 Sunny Afternoon
#3 Celluloid Heroes
#4 Waterloo Sunset
#5 Picture Book
#6 Big Sky
#7 You Really Got Me
#8 Autumn Almanac
#9 Lola
#10 This Time Tomorrow
Art Lover is not one of my top favourite Kinks' songs, but I really like it. Ray Davies has said that it's about a divorced father who misses his children, but I don't buy that for a second. Of course it has paedophilia all over it, which makes it cringey as hell, but it's a really interesting portrait. Like Joe said, it's not like he is advocating it.
Exactly! I should have put Art Lover on my list just to piss people off. 😂
Nice to see some Animal Farm love. Good stuff all around.
10. Supersonic rocketship
9. Nothing in this world stop me worrying about that girl
8. Better days
7. 20th century man
6. Victoria
5. Here comes yet another day
4. Death of a clown
3. Dead end street
2. big black smoke
1. Fancy
First band I ever saw live was The Kinks with Tommy Shaw at the Philadelphia Spectrum (RIP) in 1984 when I was 14. I love them so much 💓
Home of The Philadelphia Flyers 🏒
@David Ellis yep. Unfortunately, I'm old enough to remember when they won the Cup in 1975. I was 5 at the time, but I remember. Many guys 'streaking' in Philly that night with nothing on but just high-top Chuck Taylor's lol. Crazy times then & now when it comes to Philly & sports🙂
My favorite is Father Christmas. Great lyrics. I also like A Well Respected Man.
TOP TEN In alphabetical order:
Animal Farm
Better Things
Celluloid Heroes
Mindless Child of Motherhood
Misfits
Polly
Phenomenal Cat
Starstruck
Strangers
Sweet Lady Genevieve
Surprised none of the guys had Misfits in their Top Ten, probably my favorite song by them, Sweet Lady Genevieve a close second.
My number one will always be my fave Kinks song, the other 9 are interchangable depending on what mood I'm in 😉
1) Waterloo Sunset
2) Lola
3) Days
4)Till the End of the Day
5) Stop Your Sobbing
6) You Really Got Me

Fab! Love this time tomorrow and sunny afternoon
They have so many great songs from their different eras. I could never put together a list like this.
6. Sunny Afternoon
5. Dedicated Follower of Fashion - As a fashion hater, the song amuses me.
4. Do you remember Walter? - For me easily the stand out track from Village Green. Lovingly nostalgic reminds me a lot of "In my Life"
I'd choose Strangers as my #1 choice but Village Green as my # 1 album.
I really loved The Kinks. I think their 60s sound was my favorite of the Brit Invasion bands. Ultimately, I am a Stones fan, but The Kinks run a close second. I feel like my list is a bit 60s oriented and maybe too many singles, but these are my favorite tracks (10 to 1):
Dedicated Follower Of Fashion
Sunny Afternoon
Celluloid Heroes
Lola
You Really Got Me
Well Respected Man
All Day And All Of The Night
I'm Not Like Everybody Else
Victoria
Till The End of the Day
I really tried to fit Not Like Everyone Else into my top 10 but couldn't quite do it.
@@179rich It's definitely near the top for me, but their catalog is soooo large that it's probably not in the majority of top 10s.

He heard them all apparently, but none of them made his list.

Good to hear the love for Big Sky and Destroyer. I’m not up to the challenge of listing my top 10 but Victoria and Days are usually always on it.
Great Lost Kinks Album has some great non-album cuts, though most of them appeared in the later deluxe editions of their nearest albums.
There's this really good and underrated movie called Juliet, Naked from a few years back. It stars Ethan Hawke and he does a great cover of "Waterloo Sunset" in it.
No More Looking Back is my favorite deep cut from them!

The recently unearthed Time Song is one of their best.

Sounds like a great idea to me, but I doubt they will deviate from their rules.
@@179rich The Grateful Dead are such a special case that I'm going to make 3 different ranking lists- one for studio albums, one for live albums, and one for the whole "Dead family," which includes the solo albums.
@@AbbeyRoadkill1 Wow, sounds like quite an undertaking. You must be a fan.
