For a time, the Kinks topped out the Beatles for me. That's saying something. Was always a fan. And just when I thought they were fading, they gave us "Come Dancing", a wonderful upbeat nostalgic hymn to good times. And... I think their best three songs, in order, still remain as "Village Green Preservation Society"; "Waterloo Sunset", and "Deadend Street"; so indicative of everything Davies wrote about.
I love that Lola was at the top of the list! Even if it's not my favorite now, I loved it when it was new. Besides sounding so good, it was just amazing that they were able to make a song that sounded so great that people adored it and accepted what it was about, and the world needed that. I consider it a great achievement for The Kinks--I was there, just old enough to "get it" and admire the humor, and Ray's clever lyrics, the voices and the music. I was a kid in the "Bible Belt" in a southern state of America. This song actually accomplished something in the world, made life a little easier somewhere, for somebody.
This list was put together by an obvious 70s/80s fan. No harm. It touches on the hits of the 60s but it mainly ignores the buried classics of the 60s like Shangri La, David Watts, VGPS, Waterloo Sunset etc. The Kinks had a great arena run after Lola came out (no pun) into the 80s and this list reflects that.
