  • Continuously improve and practice kaizen more effectively by learning to identify the 7 wastes of lean manufacturing. Eliminating waste is at the heart of lean manufacturing methodology and central to the practice of kaizen (continuous improvement).
"Waste" is anything that does not create value in the eyes of the customer. Traditionally, there are seven identified wastes:
    1. Transportation
    2. Inventory
    3. Motion
    4. Waiting
    5. Over Processing
    6. Over Production
    7. Defects
Lean accomplishes massive process improvement NOT by working people harder but by eliminating wasteful activities from the work (and thereby making the work EASIER). When the waste is eliminated, the value can FLOW.
We teach KAIZEN as a practice of three skills that we call the "kaizen trinity." These three skills include:
    1. Waste Elimination
    2. 5S Methodology / Housekeeping (watch preview: • The 7 Wastes of Lean f... )
    3. Standardization (watch preview: • How Standardization Ma... )

I’m sorry, but using Tim Wood to explain the 7 wastes is little more than memorization. You should explain the wastes in the proper order with the reasons they are in that order. When people *get it*, there won’t be any need for memorization. They will see waste everywhere they look.

That sounds fascinating, Jerry! Where can I find teaching on the proper order you mention? Or can you share it here for everyone’s benefit? Thanks!

@@LeanSmarts Certainly! The mother of all waste is Overproduction... making more than the next station can manage. As soon as someone overproduces, they have Inventory. Inventory has to be moved around, that's Transportation. Most likely Transportation also involves a person, which is waste of Motion. Inventory also hides Defects (not to mention - Transportation can cause Defects too). Defects cause unnecessary work, otherwise known as Overprocessing. All of this extra Motion and Overprocessing results in the customer Waiting, and your employees being busy chasing problems all day is the waste of human potential, or the 8th deadly waste.
