Excellent video, thank you for posting it. Here's the issue I am having: 2016 Ram 2500, 6.4 liter and it has the 66rfe transmission. I keep getting this same code, the P0871. The solenoid pack was replaced under warranty last July and from what I am being told, it's the 4th time it's been replaced. Yesterday I installed a Sonnax reman valve body and I transferred the solenoid pack from the old one. When I dropped the pan, the fluid looked perfect and no metal on the magnet or anywhere in the pan. So a friend of mine uses his scan tool and does the quick learn and I go for my test drive and it shoots the same code. I have never had any other codes show up for the clutch packs or anything else, it's always the same code. I tried a test drive this morning and the same scenario. I plug in my hand held scanner and clear the code. I turn the truck off and turn the key to the power position and plug the scanner in and that code immediately shows up as a permanent code without even driving the truck. I'm thinking a wiring issue but I'm stumped at this point.
@@GaryFerraro Good morning and thank you for your response. I ended up installing a Sonnax solenoid pack and it solved all the issues and it drives like a new truck

I am not a mechanic, and my 2018 Ram 2500 6.4 is in the shop right now because of this code. I was pulling a heavy load up and down some mountains on the highway, and it was definitely a hard pull for the truck. The truck has 60,000 miles and I purchased it at 56,000 and I know the previous owner towed with it, but I don't know how much. The first issue was it being stuck in 4th gear. It would only downshift to 1st, then go back to 4th, skipping 2nd and 3rd. The trans was running about 184° so I pulled over to let it cool off. After a few minutes (it didn't really cool much) I restarted and everything normal for a while. I dropped off my machine and returned back to the highway with an empty trailer. When going up hill the truck wanted to downshift to 3rd but the once it did, it seemed to slip, then went right back to 4th. This is when the check engine light came on (code P0871). At the top of the hill, I pulled over, trans temp was about 200°, and turned off the truck for a few. Started it again, and all was fine, and I took the rest of the drive very carefully. For another 60+ miles, and all was fine. Right now, the mechanic says there could be 25 things that could throw this code. I had the fluid and filter changed at 56,000. They will drop the pan to see if they see anything, but he is already suggesting that it could be the valve body. But that may not be it and could be a waste of money and suggest then that it gets a new transmission. Do you have any advice?
I know you changed the fluid but what is the condition of the fluid? smell burnt?. Anytime i had this code it always needed a valvebody. Any other codes or just that one?
@GaryFerraro I didn't do it myself and they didn't tell me about its condition. When I checked the levels before the change it did not seem overly dark or burnt, but that's only on the tip of the dipstick
So I have a 2017 . Pop this code when passing someone without a trailer and wouldn’t go into overdrive . Pulled over checked the code Turned off the truck and restarted it and everything was fine after that . But I have noticed downshifting very hard when towing and gets kinda jumpy .

Hello Gary, so I’m having this code come up on my 2020 Ram 3500. I had my driver running a load it was a lot of up and down hill the code popped up and put the truck in limp mode he pulled over let everything cool down and he cleared the code for whatever reason. He also said when he pulled over again he saw fluid underneath the truck (not sure what it was) took the truck to the dealer they didn’t really say much but they smelled burnt fluid and would recommend getting a new transmission. What would you suggest in this case ? It’s only throwing the code for the solenoid.
